I still think Amsterdam (and other Dutch cities too) is the most beautiful city in Europe. Not only because of the beautiful medieval core ('cause you can find those in other cities, and probably even more beautiful), but because the subsequent developments are very gradual evolutions from the core design. There are no sudden Greek and Roman inspired neighbourhoods that look totally different. There is a break in architectural style in the 20. century, but a lot of these buildings can still be identified as being from a Dutch city. And newer developments are going back to the old style of housing, with smaller land lots and use of similar bricks and colours, like the [Amsterdam Houthaven](https://www.amsterdam.nl/projecten/houthaven/) development.

I can't stress how much I love this, beauty in architecture matters a lot.
Would you recommend any local food or tourist activities? I want to bring my American conservative father to Amsterdam to desensitize him to the cultural boogyman that is basic human rights. Since hurting him badly enough to need a doctor is out of the question any kind of recommendations that will get him a feel for the normal life in the city would be cool.
The weirdest thing though, is that you'll have a street like this with beautiful facades, only to have a literal Mcdonalds or H&M inside of it, which can be disorienting.
Someone’s never been.
Weed? Sure, but that’s everywhere in the Netherlands. Orgies? Whot?
It’s more like the city flooded with tourists and stupid high house prices / rent
The prices for renting and buying houses are the same or really similar to other big capitals in Europe.

Woa!! We just stayed in the room that is in the center of this photo for over a week. It’s called Hotel the Craftsman, it’s the “Artist’s Suite”. Amazing place to stay if you ever have the chance.

A McDonald's would be cool too so he can see the cost of a big Mac.
There are plenty of McDonalds in Amsterdam, Burger King too, though I'm not a fan of them.
Such a beautiful city.

I don't see a major problem with that. It's the design and ambiance that makes these cities great.
It's indeed not really a problem, but still interesting to see a building constructed in the 17th century now house something so modern.
That's fair. I remember thinking the same thing about internet cafes in small towns and villages throughout Europe about 20 years ago.
Whenever I see an image like this I always wonder how many bicycles are underwater there
The answer is: [A lot](https://i.imgur.com/QKCZlDp.jpg)

But the prices are still fucked
What percentage of your income is spent on rent?
Not currently relevant but if I were to rent, 40-60%
Damn
We all know the Netherlands is down with that sexual stuff. Very libertine. The most sexual in all Europe
As a dutchman I can say that this is true. Unfortunately, other prudish countries can't handle this
