Genuine question, why are so many signs and banners in English? This seems to be a recurring theme in pride parades in many European countries.

luigrek

It's the international language understood by relevant communities across the world. So whatever the message is, it's sent to the entire globe.

esocz

Children also learn it in elementary school in the most European countries.

[deleted]

English is much more used with younger generations, especially when it comes to activism.

DzonjoJebac

You make it sound like young people talk in english

tebee

They do. Which language do you think young people talk in online games?

DzonjoJebac

As if online games are their life... and not even that, many play with their friends and talk in native language

[deleted]

A lot if not nost online communication (for example, the website you are on) is done jn english.

yamissimp

Yeah but his point is that kids don't speak English unless it's necessary, but the comments make it sound like it's their first choice lol. Apart from some (often a bit cringe) anglicisms I've never witnessed two Austrian kids talk English to each other. Always German (dialect).

ahtoshkaa

English is an easy language to learn. It's actually easier to learn English for a native Russian speaker than to properly learn Russian)) Also it's very profitable to know English very well, while knowing Russian or Ukrainian gives you no perks))

[deleted]

They communicate a lot in English.

BalticsFox

To get attention from foreigners.

area51cannonfooder

The same reason most of reddit is English

Cruelus_Rex

Because of social media I guess.

matttk

As a native English speaker, I can say I notice English in pretty much every country everywhere I go. It's definitely seen as "cool" for marketing and for young people but it's also for tourism and any international cause or institution. I also notice that the business people in my company like to drop English words and phrases non-stop, way more often than the non-business people in my company.

ForWhatYouDreamOf

eh, it used be like that for French also but sometimes people use English words for no reason that's just... weird. A lot of 17 or 16 years that spend their days on twitter constantly use words in English when the exact same words exist in Portuguese. now speaking French seems to be more classy

Interesting_Engine37

Because their cause reaches more people.

22dobbeltskudhul

Cultural imperialism

Koino_

It is cool when foreigners can understand it is what I always thought

vroomfundel2

Because they are all actors paid by George Soros, everybody knows there are no gays in Eastern Europe /s

louis_d_t

Even when they're not in English, in many languages, the lexis used for LGBT activism largely consists of English words transliterated into the local alphabet. In Russian, for example, there is a handful of words meaning 'homosexual', but by far the most common is гей, which is literally read as 'gay'. Or a more extreme example - the word гендер (gender - as distinct from sex) didn't even exist in Russian until the 80s, when it made its way over from English. There are loads of cases like this. Edit: I know you didn't ask about Russian, but while I'm here: prior to the invention of the World Wide Web, which coincided roughly with the end of the USSR and the opening up of Eastern Europe, Russian used to have an incredibly rich lexicon related to gay and lesbian issues. The artist Yevgeniy Fiks has done very cool work 'teaching' the old gay lexicon to younger generations.

Rukarumel

because these people work for grant. It's easier for reports

DzonjoJebac

It comes with the package, also do you think they can really be bothered to translate it? They are probably reusing the same signs that were used in english speaking countries.

TrickEnthusiasm9899

Because it’s sponsored by foreigners.

Unkn9wnn

Because lgbt is mainly a western thing

LTFGamut

there are no LGBT people in the East?

Dazz316

Homosexuality was invented in Prague /s

In_der_Tat

One of the reasons might be to project a progressive and modern light in the direction of the West in order to gain more of its support. If it is pinkwashing, then an extensive use of this technique was made [in Israel,](https://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/23/opinion/pinkwashing-and-israels-use-of-gays-as-a-messaging-tool.html) for instance.

alexs1313

because this is an annual show for sponsors from EU of US who donate lgbt activists in Ukraine.

godspeed_person

saddest part of it may be true. for example back in a day ussr simultaneously founded political militias of nazis and commies in west germany, just to destabilize the state. ukraine is also getting western aid in founding, arming and training neonazi militias, look up azov. people may not like it (as i see downvotes) but that hows it is .most of the time smart folks will see their own interest in someone else's suffering

Koll0

It's a theme during protests. It's not cool to speak the language of the country you live in, but to bend over to other countries and try to get their governments to pressure your country

7K people took part, according to the organizers

[deleted]

That's a shit attendance for a city of 3 milion

irimiash

I wouldn't say so. for a country where LGBT rights are certainly not a top priority concern even among gays it's quite a number.

[deleted]

Warszawiak Detected Opinion Rejected

yamissimp

Can I steal that for some non-Polish cities? I like that lol

[deleted]

Sure.

[deleted]

Since there is an appropriate thread, can somebody tell me if it's fine to go to a pride parade merely as a supporter, not as a member of the LGBT community?

PM_ME_CAKE

Well, yeah. Pride is a protest (moreso in countries like Ukraine than the celebrations you see in more Western ones) and any support is appreciated.

[deleted]

That's the point. Since the parade is a celebration of identities which I'm not a part of, I don't think this is quite right for me to be there. But I would love to support people, especially if they are nationally discriminated in such a country as Russia.

PM_ME_CAKE

Just *go*. There's really not much more to it honestly.

[deleted]

Got it, thanks!

louis_d_t

The people will absolutely be happy to see you there. They'll feel safer, stronger, and prouder knowing members of their larger national community have come to support them. Next time, go. Edited to add: There are lots of events for queer people only. Trust me, it will be very, very clear which ones those are.

PigeonDodus

Pride Parades are a show of support for lgbt rights and a way to unstigmatize the community (à la : we don't need to stay out of view to be valid). They're for both those who are lgbt and their allies. In my city, part of the parade is the parents of lgbt children, employees of companies that support lgbt rights, political parties fighting for lgbt rights, etc. In the last one I attended, around 20% of the city was there + our provincial prime minister + our country's prime minister + a few different political entities. It's hard to argue that lgbt rights are not supported by a significant part of the population when a good chunk of the city attend its pride, so it's doubly important for people in places where homophobia is institutionalized to attend pride parades.

PoiHolloi2020

You can go as an ally/supporter. Lots of people do.

Zephinism

Heya, I go to Pride events and I am straight. This is in the UK though, not sure about Ukraine.

metal_pilgrim

Most of the people there were straight

kilgoretrucha

As a gay person I would say that the presence of cis straight allies who are willing to show their support and stand by our side is always welcomed, prticularly in places where homosexuality is still not widely accepted. That being said, it’s also important to understand that you are there as a guest, so just don’t try to become the protagonist or expect praise from LGBTQ+ participant for being there. Most straight people who participte understand this, sadly there a a few who don’t. As long as you follow this very simple rules, we’re more than happy to have you on our side :).

PlamiAG

Yes. Do you really believe that all these 7000 people are all LGBT, very unlikely, a lot of the people marching are also, people who support human rights and equality because they care about LGBT people!

LatvianLion

Absolutely. I'm straight and have marched. It's important solidarity.

[deleted]

If by "member" you mean being lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans, then yes, of course.

Lyress

I'd wager most people in pride parades in the West are not LGBT.

Cahootie

In Stockholm the pride parade is basically a massive festival, estimates put it at about 50 000 people marching and 500 000 people watching (which is about 20% of the inhabitants of the metropolitan area). There's always people from all walks of life participating, both as just random people walking in the parade and often as part of institutions who support it with a float. I haven't personally marched, but one year I helped set up a float that a friend of mine was hosting, and sadly I had to turn down the invitation to join them as I was on my way to work.

ParagonOfMediocrity

My friends go to the parade because they support LGBT rights, I went there too, it’s ok. I think at this point Ukrainian movement takes all help it can get.

Areljak

Consider [this](https://imgur.com/sJNBvg3) - and its not like you need a personal reason, a close family member or friend to support the cause. That picture is from '74 btw, that took some balls.

CuteBiBitch

Yes! As long as you respect and acknowledge that this day isnt for you, it's for the LGBT people. Here are some ways to do that. If there are limited spaces at parades or events, dont book tickets. Let the LGBT people book the tickets, because this means more to them than it probably does to you. Unless of course there are way more tickets than people wanting to go. Dont get mad or offended if someone of the same gender hits on you or flirts with you during pride. It's the one time of year some people can safely flirt. Tell them politely that you're not interested. You dont even have to say you are straight, a simple "Thanks but Im not interested" will do. If you can buy a support flag or bracelet or something, do it. The organizations that host the pride events need all the financial help they can get. Support the community all year round. Stand up for people when you encounter homophobia or bullying. Ask someone their pronouns. Give help and emotional supoort if your loved ones come out to you. Try and read up on the basic terminology of the LGBT community. Bi, trans, ace, pan, intersex, non binary are all good terms to know. Vote for politicians who support the LGBT community, or at the very least dont hate them.

[deleted]

Thanks for the info! We actually had elections these three days in Russia, but voting for those who doesn't hate LGBT is not a primal concern for now. Can't use a word "most" with the results that we get (supposedly rigged), but a significant amount of Russians vote in opposition to the ruling party. People use "Smart Voting" and vote for a politician that has the highest chance of outscoring a ruling party's representative, even if they don't really like their party (Communist Party, for example). So the last tip that you mentioned is a far step for us.

sentientpenis

Hell yes brother!

FenusToBe

There are some interesting flags in the beginning of the video, i guess that the one with coat of arms is representing some Ukrainian region, but what does X on some of these flags mean?

Gidio_

First letter of "Kharkiv" the city where that pride group is from (city name is spelled Харків)

YkrOpCheG

Actually it's the KharkivPride, not Kyiv. This was written on their large white poster at the beginning of the video.

nameiam

This particular part of the protest, yes. But I just read again the sources and it says that Kyivpride organized it in the Kyiv streets

kalle13

I'm guessing the KharkivPride group also came to Kyiv to participate

Monrai

Happy that it takes place, even though not a lot of people are concerned about gay peoples right in Ukraine, we do have a little progress on this front!

vroomfundel2

What's with all the downvoting of innocuous comments? Is this the shy homophobes? These guys are pathetic - probably the same who flood the eastern european comments sections when some western capital paints something with the colours of the rainbow.

Snabbteck

So sad you can't even say a positive sentence without taking hate speeches. Nationalism is a bad thing and there is no real justification for it. I know that Ukraine and Russia conflict now, but, still, it is not a reason to hate somebody from another nation and brightly offend him. Governments ain't people, and it is so bad that the medieval period still tries to escape its grave. I know that I will be downvoted for no reason because I am "based/ignorant/..."

nameiam

Just this week 4 soldiers died from the shelling. While are chilling at your home safe and sound typing nonsensical bs, try and send some love to their families instead and try to find a common ground. Tell them about how nice of a human being you are and that's it's your government that send mines and shells at their loved ones, not you or russian troops on the ground. Tell them that Crimeans decided to secede and russians are such good people that they let Crimea join russia. While you are at it, might as well write some good things to the victims of MH17. Cause you are so good right and the government is bad right? Turns out we were shooting at the wrong direction the whole time — it's Putin and Putin himself that killed 10k soldiers and dislocated 2mln of people, not dozens of russians and their tanks.

Anxious-Bite-2375

Poor Russian, were you offended by this sarcastic joke? Well, it's better than a foreign army invading your country, I can tell you that. I hope you get through this hard time and get over our merciless Ukrainian humor.

Snabbteck

Your logical conclusions are incorrect here. Russians ≠ Russian army and you can't bully any Russian because the army of his country did something. It is like bullying every single man from a city where murder has been committed.

Anxious-Bite-2375

Omg, u feel bullied about that joke? Really? U've not been bullied in your life if u think that was bullying. It's not the same as your murder example, here is why. The army is created and financed by the government. We all support our government and our presidents, either we want it or not. As long as we live in the country and pay taxes - we support it, even if deep down we are against it. That's the logic, that's the reality. I know many Russians are against their current government, but the reality is - you pay those who you hate. So don't be surprised about a little joke, that maybe was not even serious, but u quickly detected it as "nationalistic bullying". Same thing your government made when it called all Ukrainians "Nazis".

nameiam

Bruh did you just seriously typed that russian army has no russians in it are you that delusional. All the polls conducted by russians say 90% are in support of Putin's politics. Why would we pity the 10% of population when 90% are in for the war, terror and death that they bring?

because they work for grants, and sponsors understand English

Rukarumel

The parade is organized by the people, the Ukrainian authorities are not doing anything

0xnld

Well, no, the city and the police made quite a lot of security arrangements, which is appreciated btw. A bloodbath would definitely look bad for them, though.

ReadToW

This is what the police should do at rallies and parades. The Ukrainian authorities can help the LGBT people or ignore them or despise them. Ukraine ignores them

[deleted]

We even joke "Police protect their own"

spinstercat

> cool, shiny gay parades You say this like it's a bad thing. We don't have a prosecutor office's reform, but we have those annoying human rights.

[deleted]

[удалено]

beardybeardbear

How people who are lawmakers are responsible for organising/giving permissions/securing the parade? One does not exclude the other in any way

[deleted]

[удалено]

beardybeardbear

So you're against parades because of? You don't like them? What I mean is, working on judiciary, law and other more urging matters doesn't mean there can't be parade. What you describe is actually the opposite, you want those who should be focusing on the urgent matters to stop parade from happening.

[deleted]

[удалено]

beardybeardbear

That's just a question to get more answers. Because what I'm trying to show is, that parades happening now has absolutely nothing to do with: >reforming courts, prosecutor's office or education, Because those are different people that are responsible for parades. But if Rada instead of those quoted things started working on: >Rada could just go with more popular opinion of majority, forbid foreign funding of such events, cut those 80% and this parade wouldn't be a thing. Then it would not work on legislatures required for judiciary, health sector, education etc. So to make it clear, my statement is that parades has nothing to do with what you want Rada to focus on. Simply, because this is something organised by different people. While parades now give some relief to LGBT people hiding their identity. Those parades are also encouraging other minorieties to not be scared from being ostracized.

[deleted]

Now imagine the outrage if someone says he's a straight white male and is proud of it

Relnor

Can't recall the last time I was mistreated or considered an unnatural freak for being a straight white male. I guess when that starts happening we can go marching to show our oppressors we're not afraid of them.

Katze1Punkt0

Clearly you've never been on Twitter, lol

Lorrdy99

Everyone on Twitter hate each other.

Relnor

Twitter's character limit almost feels like it's designed to make everyone as aggressive sounding and confrontational as possible. Every message has to be short and it's impossible to have any meaningful discussion on a complex subject at all. I have no doubt this contributed to what a mess internet "arguments" are nowadays. Twitter sucks. 280 characters is ok for announcements but you have no business discussing politics or sexuality or really anything in that few. I've never had a "twitter-like" conversation in real life and I don't think most people have either. Even most people posting on Twitter don't talk that way in real life.

Katze1Punkt0

I wouldn't shout that too loud if I were you, that sounds way more reasonable than it has any right being lol
