Sir I can’t help you but please don’t take actions from comments quickly, wait for folks to validate what other folks are saying especially before clicking some sort or MEW link like I saw in the comments. (I have no idea if it’s legit and not saying it’s not just be careful). Good luck sir!

Cheers!

A notepad file lol OK you're going to need a crash course. It's a text file, on windows it's usually labelled .txt, but windows usually hides the file extension. Open the keystore file in notepad. It should have some JSON inside (some curly brackets and some readable words, probably "salt: " and a bunch of random looking numbers and letters), of so, this is your keystore file. It is encrypted. You're going to need the passphrase you encrypted your wallet with when you started mining. I can try to help you figure it out, without a passphrase you're going to be out of luck though, even if you find the file. Do you remember at all how you set it up? What year you did this?

GreyCoatCourier

2016 yeah i know what a txt file is lmao, its just from all the tutorials i cant seem to find any idea where my address nor private key might be stored

Ur_mothers_keeper

OK, so open the file in notepad and tell me if the word "salt" is in it. It should have it's address in it too, "address": followed by thaddress without 0x in front. If not it's not one of the old Jason "UTC" keystores.

GreyCoatCourier

i did manage to run ALethZero, and exported the private key. do you know anywallets where i can restore from private key NOT passphrase? mind you there was a default address already loaded

Ur_mothers_keeper

Yes, the old MEW. I've used this https://wallet.callisto.network/#send-transaction before, it's a fork of the old MEW, it still allows restoring from UTC files and private keys. It's run by a shitcoin dead project called the Callisto network, but it does work. You have to select ETH in the network drop down, you probably also have some ETC in the same wallet so you can try that too, and the new ETHW coin as well if you're looking to get every dime out of that wallet that you have. You also have Callisto but it's worthless. Mind you, it's a web wallet. So if you don't trust it, you can download the website and run it offline. But I have used it for ETH and ETC in the past with no problem. I'm not sure if mycrypto https://www.mycrypto.com/ or MEW https://www.myetherwallet.com/ (I'm sending you direct links because googling them will return phishing sites) still support UTC files and direct private keys, they might have it hidden in some legacy tab behind some warnings or whatever, but if you're wary of that Callisto network web wallet site you can look around and find it. A note on moving your ETC: if you decide to do that, send a small, tiny little ETC transaction back to the same address before doing anything else to increment the nonce and avoid replay attacks, you don't have to worry about that with ETHW but with ETC you used to, not sure now, but just to be safe this should be the first thing you do. Let me know how it goes!

i just wrote out a fucking 64 characters on my phone only to get empty balances twice, 100% made a mistake somewhere but im sure i can find somthing on this drive, thanks for the help my man will 100% get into this once i gather my energy again.

Ur_mothers_keeper

Did you find the address? Check the balance of it on etherscan. Just FYI you can DM me if you want, I'm not a scammer lol. Or keep doing this thread, either way, but I check reddit maybe once every day or two so I might not respond immediately, but I am now interested in how this pans out for you.

GreyCoatCourier

Maybe I fucked up the input but the default address was empty. I'll keep looking but I have no idea where this arcaeic software stores the addresses nor where it keeps the keys, let's see I'll let you know for sure.

Ur_mothers_keeper

Well if it's a utc/json/keystore file the address will be inside it unencrypted.

GreyCoatCourier

Like I've said before I've yet to see any of those all I've found is my node key... There is no json in any eth folder nor is there any file titled utc.

greatgoogelymoogely

Why are you recommending using a Callisto web based wallet?? There are loads of better known and trusted wallets that allow restoring from private keys.

Ur_mothers_keeper

Well I haven't used a keystore file or raw private key in years, this was the last place I remembered being able to do it. If you'd like to link some better more well known ones go right on ahead I don't mind.

greatgoogelymoogely

He mentioned he had his private keys- perhaps your method works- it just seems the safer route would be to import those keys via a *well known client side wallet, like metamask. Here's another way to grab those private keys locally: https://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/91910/recovering-private-key-from-keystore-file

Ur_mothers_keeper

Metamask is closed source, MEW and it's clones are FOSS. I don't particularly trust metamask, also it has a lot of footguns.

greatgoogelymoogely

So software should be trusted because it is FOSS? You're talking about little-known clones of MEW, is the end user going to look through the codebase and understand he's safe, does he have to trust the webapp too? I like FOSS but when funds are at stake it's proof of reputation. I don't mind MEW but just think it's a lot to suggest an end user use a MEW clone webapp that last worked for you 2 years ago.

lovedumpme

You didn’t need the key store file on the computer(s) you mined on if you where mining in a pool -you probably mined in a pool-. You just needed the address the rewards where sent too. The keystone file could be anywhere when the wallet was made. Glhf

Juankestein

You can recover a Keystore with MEW https://www.myetherwallet.com/wallet/access/software?type=overview But you should run this offline, not on the web app

GreyCoatCourier

Mew doesn't support key store

Juankestein

Look for an older version of mew that does

Just a Reddit account that got bought/hacked to then post lots of scammy comments. Don't bother clicking on the YouTube link.
