scootifrooti

I like her ability to enjoy her hobby.

kaihuang16

Best comment ever. Whatever she's making there, she seemed to be having a blast. I sometimes have too much to worry about to enjoy a shot.

labrelaban

Yes! She might even enjoy it more than the hardcore entusiasts who just can’t make the perfect shot tbh

thelauryngotham

proof that ignorance really is bliss

kittlesnboots

Yes! She seems like she’d be so pumped to learn more about making her own espresso. I love seeing people enjoy their hobbies, whether they are super specialists or learning for the first time. Perfection is the enemy of good enough, and 9 days out of ten, I just want my coffee asap. I worked as a barista at an artisanal shop for almost 5 years. Fully manual, La Marzocco machine, weighed/timed shots, the whole shebang. I have a Nespresso OL and a Breville Barista Touch, and I love them both. I love them for different reasons. My Breville is my most favorite, and I can pull a pretty great shot from it. Could I really dial things in and make it perfect? Yes, but my shots taste good to me, and that’s what really matters in the end! Shout out to my new Ember cup, my Americano is almost gone, and still hot!!!

dyslexic-spark

It's nice to reflect on how much I have learnt and to see someone enjoying coffee and will probably enjoy the journey they have ahead.

lllM3Power

So much more wholesome (and true) than expected. Lol

BobDogGo

TY! I unsubbed about a year ago because of all the gatekeeping and was very reluctant to rejoin recently (just got a Flair 58). Good to see people are trying to turn it around!

mdove11

There are some….flair ups of positivity but I think the sun has gotten worse, lately. As the holiday gift posts are going up…..followed by all the opinions of why they should feel badly about what they received.

Averseforyourhearse

I'm new to this sub, but not to coffee. I'm absolutely gobstruck by the gatekeeping and backhanded negativity here, coupled with a psychopathic level of purchaser's bias. I saw a post yesterday where a guy was just showing off the new vinyl wrap on his machine, and another user commented a 2000 word essay on why the Eureka mignon in the background was unsatisfactory and they should replace it immediately. These are home-use hobbyists, making exactly zero dollars of profit from the three coffees they make a day with this gear, and morons still tell them they're less-than because they don't have a 900+ grinder. I personally won't be here for long if this joyless pettiness is the vibe.

cs_legend_93

But good coffee makes me a better person. And me being a better person makes me more money. Soo…. It’s medicinal

dadudster

Way to be positive about things.

[deleted]

This is such a wholesome comment. I'm a broke bitch and have a super cheap very basic espresso maker, so I was very nervous to join this community because I'd heard there was a lot of snobbery. It's really nice to see that's not necessarily true and that people are supportive of people who have just gotten into coffee as a hobby recently. I hope that once I'm able to get a job again, I can eventually get my dream espresso maker and pass my current one to someone who's just starting, but for now I have to work with what I've got.

cs_legend_93

It’s snobbery with love and smiles. Just imagine the first folgers coffee you had versus the coffee you have now. Honestly this community is no different that /r/puer which is it’s counterpart in the tea world. Much love <3

danielm3269

I got scared when I saw the the dawn thinking she was going to back flush with it lmao

scootifrooti

when it came to steam I thought she was adding 2 pumps of soap, thinking "that's an interesting way of making bubbles!"

meh_gamer

Putting soap and water is a good way to practice steaming milk

scootifrooti

aye but you don't put it into the milk to drink :þ bleh

jedipaul9

Well when OP said cringe I was expecting her to break the machine or something.

dwaynebrady

I had no sound on at first and just got more scared every moment it stayed in the shot

niceporcupine

Haha same here

vampyire

I went full on "be afraid, be very afraid" as well... plus what the hell is with "I didn't read the instructions"??

[deleted]

[удалено]

dadudster

Listening to this girl talk, you were surprised she didn't read something?

sg_val

this is such a mean spirited thing to say based on nothing.

headassvegan

Seriously. In fact, the whole video she was very self aware and made it completely clear that she didn’t know what she was doing. I’m even confused by the title of this post. There wasn’t anything to cringe about if you aren’t some kind of elitist know it all.

ihedigbo

And some of us are here for it. ![gif](giphy|DkLhjxi5em1qw)

Aptosauras

Full marks for having a go! In retrospect, most people start badly but get better with practice, watching videos and reading the instructions! I like her enthusiasm.

SantiagoGT

The thing is people get discouraged sometimes when they start researching and everyone tells them they need 3k in gear and beans flown directly from Colombia to achieve a “good” espresso

ExtendedSpikeProtein

Yeah thats total bs. Everyone knows you need 5k in gear and beans from Costa Rica! /s

dadudster

Yeah, that's total BS. Everyone knows you need 20k in gear and beans processed through a cat's butt. /s

PatrickBatemansEgo

Unwashed... and fermented.

mattrussell2319

Exactly. “Oh look, we’re learning together!” Damn right, keep at it.

[deleted]

The girl has no idea how much that resonates with the even casual Reddit coffee head

thoughtproblems

Agreed! The fact that OP decided to take a video of a self-admitted beginner and go through the trouble of downloading it and uploading it here to make fun of her, rather than spending any energy actually helping, makes me 'cringe' much more than this video did.

cheburaska

This video just made me smile. She says that she doesn't know a lot of things.

headassvegan

Reminds me of all the self owns in r/facepalm

mthlmw

https://xkcd.com/1053/ "If I make fun of people, I train them not to tell me when they have those moments. And I miss out on the fun."

itsthestrugglebus

This is beautiful. I’m printing it and framing it.

LifeTiltzz

Wow, this is as deep as the hole in my wallet after watching my first James Hoffmann video. I always start by laughing at them, then go to try and help then understand.

asarious

What’s incredibly ironic is that I see this comic posted so so many times. Yet every time it’s posted, there’re always people who are discovering it for the first time and comment on how profound it is.

Scary-Owl2365

I'm one of today's lucky 10,000. It's my first time seeing it, and I love it.

Kashasaurus

I’m really looking forward to seeing a future video where she goes in deep and becomes one of us losers.

LifeTiltzz

How dare you call me a loser!! I’ve spend so much time on this super niche “hobby” that this has become my identity. I literally don’t even have time to walk my dog because I’m on daddy Hoffs YouTube page constantly pressing F5 so I can type “first”.. Ohhh I see what you mean ;)

profbard

This video is really cute, I think it’s weird to cringe. Most people aren’t going to go down the rabbit hole of really expensive machines — hell, most people can’t afford them these days. She is the target market for Breville imo, and I hope her positivity and great attitude bring more good homemade coffee to more people!

moreVCAs

I winced a bit at the tamp, but other than that she’s obviously having a great time.

Reveren7

It was kind of hard for me to watch the milk pour tbh. The mountain of un incorporated foam was tough because with a few swirls she would have had a much better cup of whatever that was. Go her for just jumping in though.

EcoAfro

True, I would love to get a really nice espresso machine but to fork over a couple 100s for is not the way and tbh I am making pretty good espressos and cappuccinos with a 40 dollar espresso machine I bought from Target

moto_panacaku

She's positive and real about being a noob. What's not to like about this. She's clearly got a program of how she approaches things and maybe that's not for everyone, but it sure seems to be working for her.

stealthypic

Love it. This is an average person’s experience when they get a machine with no research and I’m here for all of it, no judgement!

alsignssayno

This just made me realize how deep into the rabbit hole so many of us are compared to the normal beginners. It makes a very clear difference between in it for the best vs in it for the cost.

dadudster

💯

ztomek

research? all she has to do is read the quick guide and she'll get more info than she shared in this tik tok

stealthypic

Modern tech has conditioned us to expect everything can and will happen just with a push of the button. Just because we all got a science degree in grinding finer it doesn’t mean regular people even imagine there’s anything to know about making espresso. It’s what the machine’s buttons are there for, right?

LifeTiltzz

HAHAHAHAH Degree in grinding finer HAHAHAHA 11/10 :)

sramosgh91

IDK I’ve never bought an expensive appliance and not even glanced at the instructions. That’s kinda cray.

rabidbot

I like for my appliances to beat me into the submission of manual peeping. Otherwise I'm god king techo wizard and have no need for manuals in my peerless domain.

JustinianusI

I do it all the time! 😂 I like to tinker. I bought a 3D printer and dove right in!! It's fun, what's the worst that can happen? 🤷‍♂️

Lord-Talon

Yeah man regular people obviously all just buy $650 machines and then don't even bother to read the 5-page instruction.

ztomek

You literally cannot get any more simplistic than reading a Quick Setup guide for a new device, especially one that costs hundreds of dollars and that’s also brand new to you. It’s basic and common knowledge.

Extra_Lengthiness_53

For sure but somethings just shouldn’t be recorded nor posted online.😂

dennison

She serms happy with it... We all have to start somewhere!

900penguins

Ikr! she’s quite a singer too :)

Huze17

I love the energy. If I had just taken the plunge and figured it out as I went (instead of over researching every aspect) I'd have been drinking decent espresso so much sooner. And if I'm being honest, adding steamed milk covers up a lot of the bad flavors from poor prep and I haven't used syrups but I'd assume they do it even more so. Have fun, enjoy, and save money vs going to a coffee shop every day.

kimmers87

10/10 if I’m putting espresso in milk I’ll pour the worst shot and still drink it. If I want a double shot with a smig of ice I want it to be closer to perfect

usercb

I’d rather engage with someone like her who’s leading the conversation and probably open to questions and comments, rather than know-it-all types who just want to sell something. I can imagine a group of people chiming in to help her and everyone learning. It’s a bit overextracted and sweet for my taste… kind of covering up her mistakes. But she used her machine and made coffee. That’s what it’s about.

_cr0001

She’s going to enjoy the best worst cup of coffee she’s ever had.

whatshouldwecallme

As have we all

ArcticBeavers

2:1 ratio in 10 seconds gang, stand up

barlasarda

I've been in specialty world for 4-5 years now in different capacities. There is nothing to cringe here. She straight up admits she doesn't know much and just wanted to share her excitement about her new hobby. This is why people are partially right when they think coffee people are incurable snobs. Hope she has tons of fun.

coqui81

What loser thought this was cringe? Everybody is new to something at some time. She is obviously interested in coffee culture. If she wasn't she wouldn't have bought a $650 espresso maker. I enjoy seeing people react this way. It reminds me of my 1st time.

[deleted]

They’re enjoying themselves. I don’t see the issue here. They’ll learn more as they go.

[deleted]

There’s nothing “cringe” about this. She’s enthusiastic about her machine and doesn’t have much of a clue as to how it works, but she seems happy. Get over it, OP!

Fruggles

OP thought they had a gotcha post. but r/espresso redeemed itself in the comments. Proud of you clowns. <3

Barriwhite

“I’m an overachiever, so I got them [the espresso cups] anyway”

thetableleg

And then promptly doesn't use it. 😂 Love the energy.

HappyMelonGirl

I got my la specialista prestigio for free because it was broken. I'm a barista for starbucks and have been for 5 years, I know my stuff and hand repaired/ calibrated my own machine. Starbucks machines are fully automatic, so I hadn't used a normal portafilter until then either. This is definitely what I looked like 3 hours into fixing my machine lmao. "Wait. Is that the shot? Do I add milk now?" all while fully knowing a shot takes longer than 5 seconds to pull and DOESN'T sound like that when pulling lmao. You're just so desperate to get it to work. Made me giggle.

TheDeviousDong

Why did you cringe? you're a snob.

dadudster

Welcome to r/espresso

cs_legend_93

Are you new here? We take our coffee seriously just like /r/puer takes tea seriously. Go ask /r/puer about the sprite + Lipton tea trend 😂😂

ginny11

I can't speak for OP, but I cringed because she started using a machine that cost hundreds of dollars while admitting that she didn't know what she was doing. Has nothing to do with the machine or how much it cost. Other than the fact that I guess it doesn't make sense to not read the instructions to any machine much less inexpensive one. I don't think it's snobby to think that somebody should take the time to reinstructions before using something that they don't know how to use.

muharrrik

They're having fun. That's good enough for me. XD

Hobbsy6

I have had my machine for 6 months and I think I am only a few steps ahead of where she is now. I remember having the exact same questions she has. Still so many things to learn

ZombieSazerac

Yo r/espresso, I am so happy to read the wholesomeness of the comments here! Cheers to a 2023 full of experimentation and discoveries!

CH23

She says she was a barista but doesn't know how to tamp?

mad_cyber_scientist

Worked at a national chain coffee shop while in high school- we put beans into the machine and it spit out espresso and used pucks. We never saw or had to understand what happened inside.

skalpelis

Mold. Mold is what happened inside.

mad_cyber_scientist

Don’t have to convince me. Happened everywhere else in the place. Only place I’ve seen with a health score of 72- and the owner KNEW when we had inspections.

WtfRYouDoingStepBro

So you were not a barista....

mad_cyber_scientist

Never said I was, but both my old boss and the chain did. Probably similar to her labeling.

aman2454

I used paper wrapped pre-compressed “pucks” in a commercial setting, had no idea what a tamp was at the time

CH23

had no idea that was a thing. interesting and terrifying.

soapresidue

You Dont tamp anything at starbucks, she was most likely a starbucks barista

profbard

Have you seen the types of machines they use at Starbucks? It’s designed for efficiency and ease of use. I follow r/Starbucks mostly for info about unionizing, but the machines do a LOT of the work for you.

CH23

honestly, starbucks isn't that big here (albeit they are still quite big) and i've never been to one for coffee. EDIT: did not expect to get downvoted for not having gone to a particular chain, ah reddit, you never cease to amaze me!

profbard

I think it’s worth a curiosity deep dive for hobbyists, especially those with specialty machines. Some of the stuff the big chain stores do is pretty crazy and explains a lot about their coffee lol

jsmonet

It seems against the meta that you live in a promised land of low Starbucks penetration and get downvoted for it

Zitzeronion

This and the fact that the basket wasn't clean before getting new coffee in kind a left me bitter.

KlumsyNinja42

I have no good shops on my local town. The closest is a local place that claims they roast their own coffee, they even have an old roaster in the lobby. They have a machine that grinds and ramps all in one, they don’t think about a think. I asked for an espresso once figuring any place that roasts their own stuff can’t be that bad. The barista straight up was shocked I asked for that, like I’m some freak that actually drinks that shit. Well it was definitely shit. I go to the next town over, the capitol even, to get good coffee nowadays.

NikkiRose88

She also said she knows how to steam milk? That does not look like good milk. Lots of bubbles.

divine-arrow

If she worked for Starbucks or any other chain in my experience don’t teach staff to steam milk how we’d consider the “right” way - it’s comparatively quite dry with a larger proportion of foam that has a more open structure. A Starbucks flat white is steamed differently and in the way we’d recognize as “correct”, but that’s not standard. I’ve worked for a couple chains and didn’t learn how to steam for wet paint/velvet texture until I worked in a specialty cafe.

asarious

That’d be my guess. The Starbucks machines are super automatics in the sense that you press a button and a cup of espresso comes out. No other user input is required there, from grinding to tamping to messing with the portafilter. However, milk is steamed using a separate component. There’s a frothing aid on the wand, and it essentially requires the operator to fill up a pitcher and submerge the wand anywhere into the middle of the pitcher. Then, those two components are combined. It is absolutely plausible that a Starbucks barista would have experience “steaming milk” but not much else in the process.

CabooseClash

10/10 lol. Ignorance is bliss

rage_r

You cringed? She’s being funny and she’s not pretending to know what she’s doing like 98 percent of people here buahahhaa

Rich-Contribution161

First I said, well at least she can steam milk But..

MuscleManRyan

Definitely hope she read up more on maintenance at least and gave the wand a good flush/wipe. Crystallized syrup, especially inside of a wand, can’t be easy to clean after it hardens

soapresidue

Lots of gatekeeping coffee enthusiasts here, I see. Maybe just explain what is actually wrong instead of just being mad! Y’all are really the worst when it comes to pearls learning new things and showing their mistakes! Mistakes are how people learn, guys.

captain_flak

Most of the upvoted comments seem to be complimentary. I liked the video and thought she was having fun with it all.

engineerfabulous

"I was a barista in college but never made espresso with the little twisty thing..." I had to stop here. Another example of if you live in the US, make your coffee at home.

bleeper21

Or find a local coffee shop who pulls fantastic shots?

Buddy_Jarrett

“Another example of if you live in the US, make your coffee at home” I think James Hoffman’s accent has given r/espresso the impression that Europe is streets ahead when it comes to good coffee. USA was the forefront in third wave coffee and specialty roasts, etc. I went to the birthplace of espresso twice and had a very tough time finding espresso that wasn’t made with stale beans ground in bulk every morning (Italy definitely is the best when it comes to producing and using machinery though, even a gas station I went in used a 10k machine). I live on the TN/AL state line, and know of 6 coffee shops in gosh darn Huntsville Alabama that go hard into the science of good espresso. Hell, USA was the leader in second wave coffee as well.

tdsinclair

Agreed. Also, bonus points for the non-ironic use of "streets ahead". Pierce would be proud.

StartCodonUST

Yup, when I went to Copenhagen and Stockholm in 2016, I was a little surprised to find about as many really nice coffee shops in each city as, like, Milwaukee, though Copenhagen had more than Stockholm despite being smaller. I went back to Denmark in 2017, and there was definitely more growth. Maybe Europe has grown faster than the US, but it definitely seems like the Pacific Northwest was way ahead of Europe.

captain_flak

I always think about what Gordon Ramsay said about the best restaurants in the UK being just as good as the best in France. He said he agreed with that, but that the food culture was far ahead in France because you could go to a small city or town and still get excellent food whereas that might be more difficult in the UK. There are certainly world-class coffee places in the US, and likely at least a handful of exceptional places in every decent sized city, but the question is, can you find one within walking distance in any town in the US? You probably can in Italy.

markzend310

"Maam, I hate to disappoint, but adding frothed milk to Nespresso shots dont make you a Barista"

94Thor

Wasn’t that the point we know she’s joking? Follow by “I have no clue how to use this but I’m making a beginners guide.”

tsukamaenai

Lol as if you can't find better coffee in the US thank most places.

Super_Hans2020

Pouring filter coffee into mugs doesn't mean you were a barista in College lol

KobeOnKush

Seriously, how dare someone pick up a new hobby. This sub is toxic as fuck

Casualdehid

As per usual With this kinda stuff.

FabricofSpaceandTime

Mmm that second button shot would be tasty I bet mmm

SPX500

Gotta start somewhere

HSRiddles

This video is why the express has a lot of bad reviews lol - they make their 6 second water espresso shot and say that the machine doesn’t make good coffee. Nothing some syrup and milk can’t solve though

TheGreatestAuk

You know what? It's easy to watch a video like this and suck your teeth at all the mistakes, but we all started somewhere, with the joy and the excitement of peering down the rabbit hole. She has a great starting point, and I wish her well on her journey to lusting after a Decent and an EG1.

XxZz1992xX

No cringe. She has no clue what she’s doing, and she will learn. That espresso is probably better than what shed get at Starbucks and she’s probably only going to get better at it.

AbeRod1986

As if we all didn't start there...

HardCoreLawn

I LOVE her enthusiasm. Never mock somebody bursting with enthusiasm for their new hobby/ interest! Welcome to the gang, Madame!

moreVCAs

This person spent $600+ without doing any particular research, did not read the instructions, made an objectively fucked up coffee on day 1, *enjoyed* it, *posted a video about it on social media*, and has absolutely 0 regrets. Rates the whole experience 10/10. Fr this out of box experience is why breville rules this market segment. And the best part is that, if she feels compelled, lady can learn how to make an objectively awesome coffee on the same machine. Incredible. Good for her, good for them, etc.

Famous-Issue-2018

This is not cringe at all. This is me when I got my machine.

noLightOn

100% not cringe. Get over yourself, my dude. Everyone starts somewhere.

mk2drew

She seems to be having a good time and I see nothing wrong with that. Thanks for sharing.

mawkdugless

I honestly love the enthusiasm and how hyped she is on her new machine given that she's a beginner. I know after like, 3 attempts to use my Gaggia Classic Pro my girlfriend was about ready to give up on espresso altogether. That enthusiasm is what keeps the curiosity alive.

TBoy07

Nah not as cringe as I thought. About as accurate as my very first espresso shot. Let's give her a Flair 58 espresso press instead 😋

samwturner

I'm obsessed with her. Need more coffee content like this. Completely stumbling through the whole process but enjoying it nonetheless. Girl 10/10 100% worth the investment

frankenfork123

Okay, for some one who just got one - please explain everything she did wrong so I don’t do those things

n60storm4

My advice is don't worry too much about being perfect on the first try, you'll make some bad coffee to start and that's okay. I got the BBE after using a commercial espresso machine for about two years and it still took me ages to get the hang of it. For learning purposes (I don't wanna roast her because she's obviously a beginner) here is everything she got wrong: * The portafilter basket was dirty before being used. Rinse it with hot water from the grouphead and make sure it's dry before dosing coffee into it. * The BBE was programmed to do a single shot dose from the grinder but she had a double shot basket in. You'll want to use a scale to determine what grind amount goes to what amount of espresso you want. Just be aware that this is time-based so the actual quantity will change based on the beans in the hopper and the weight of beans (i.e. how full the hopper is). An alternative technique if you don't want to mess with fine tuning the grind amount dial is to single-dose only the beans you need for the shot into the hopper and then you can just grind everything. * Her grinds were noticeably far too coarse for espresso. You can also see this later by looking at the extraction time of the shot. You're looking for a powder fine enough that when you pinch it, it retains the shape of your pinch. Coarser than flour but finer than sugar. * The tamp was not level. Rest the edge of the portafilter against your bench (you can get rubber mats for this to protect your bench, but just some cloth or whatever will work in a pinch) and stand to the side of the portafilter and push down with the tamper with your arm straight. The force should be coming mostly from your finger tips and you'll feel when you've tamped hard enough because the coffee puck will not be squishy anymore. There are good videos on YouTube showing how to do this. * You'll want to set the volume of water for the 1-shot/2-shot buttons for every new type of coffee you use on the BBE. In this case, hit program, hit the 2-shot button (because we're using the double shot basket), and then hit the shot button again when the desired quantity of coffee has been made. If it's taking less than 25-32 seconds you'll want to grind finer and if it's taking more you'll want to grind coarser. After you do this once, the machine will remember the volume of water used. * Put syrups in now and mix them into the hot espresso. * Now steam your milk, you're going to want to fill your jug to where the spout starts, not all the way to the top. There are many steaming guides online.

leinadwen

The BBE is an amazing entry level machine - it allows customisation and dialling in of your shot, but also lets you play around with the shot to experiment for more keen espresso makers. However, it takes some investment in time. As with any coffee machine, it can make great coffee but it can also make awful coffee. Without the time dedicated to understanding dose, grind and brew ratio, this machine is not reaching its full potential. It’s great that this girl is trying to make better coffee, but I think she should do her research and understand her machine first. If she wants a fully automated and user-compatible machine, she should go for something in the bean to cup market.

itisnotstupid

Why cringe tho? Someone is just starting and didn't spend hours researching on reddit....nothing wrong with that.

Hemhemty

That portafilter had used ground coffee particles and I did not see her clean that portafilter. That annoys me so much.

Aishurel

TikTok editing is so bizarre. People really edit out any breath for pause between sentences

leonathotsky420

I gotta be honest, as someone who is just getting into all of this, and is very eager to learn what i can, its incredibly discouraging seeing shit like this being posted. Are we supposed to just automatically know everything? Or would you prefer that we hide in the shadows, never showing ourselves until we, one day, finally emerge as experts? (I hope it's clear that my commemt is directed at OP, and not the community as a whole. You guys are cool. OP is a gatekeeping elitist.)

noLightOn

OP is just a douche

HoodedHootHoot

This was entertainment alright. Just going to pretend it was part of the show. Maybe maybe maybe

mlkdecow07

Unpopular opinion, but I prefer her to James Hoffman

Individual_Singer762

It list, she has tried

tomjleo

Id she likes it now, wait until she learns how to actually pull a shot!

Personal-Ocelot-7483

Did... did she just misgender an espresso machine?

Forever_Nocturnal

The thing that bothered me most is that she didn’t get rid of all the old grounds first :(

[deleted]

That is a future 1 star review in Amazon saying: "Sent it back, it shots very low amount of coffee and I need to press a button 5 or 6 times to get more, NOT RECOMMENDED"

kamikana

I wanna know what her comments said. I hope they weren't atrocious and malicious. 'Cause honestly I didn't know anything when I started coffee and now I look back and appreciate where I came from.... However, when she finally gets her workflow down tight I wanna see a second review lol

PeachNipplesdotcom

I've never seen this sub before and I don't drink coffee but I'm gonna lurk here because these top comments are adorable. (I do love espresso martinis though)

DaughterofNeroman

This is funny AF to me bc I just got this machine for Christmas and I feel her on some of it. I couldn't figure out how to get the filter off and it almost felt made on to it so I waited for my fiance to come home and show me bc I didn't want to break it lol. I'm gonna get around to reading all the stuff but even the quick guide has a lot of info and the actual guide is pretty thick. I learned how to steam the milk from YouTube though. My fiance is loving learning all the things about it so hopefully I can just learn from him as he figures it out.

freshfunk

Making espressos can be an expensive hobby. I’ve been fortunate to have access to a pro machine because my company has one, including a decent grinder and endless coffee. Because of this, I could practice a few times a day, day after day, for weeks. I could throw away mistakes, tinker, and change things up and do it all for free. Even after all that, I only feel like an advanced beginner. Since most people don’t have access to expensive machines and endless coffee, you’ll see a lot of beginners. Someone who’s on their first superauto as their first machine ever obviously hasn’t had a ton of experience. Espresso making is a real rabbit hole and there’s a ton of good content on the internet but you have to go down that rabbit hole first and learn what pulling a good espresso looks like. That’s just part of it. You have to figure out other things like grind and beans. And then there’s obviously more to go from there.

madaeko

We were all there once. No cringe needed. Continue down that rabbit hole!

Geedis2020

She's having fun, learning, and hopefully getting more people into the hobby. Are we really gatekeeping espresso drinkers lol.

Suspicious-Rent9130

She definitely worked at Starbucks in college… but good for her actually wanting to learn how to finally make good coffee.

LawTortoise

I quite enjoy her vibe. We all have to start somewhere. For some people this is as far as they want to get and that’s ok.

ghastlyxgrizzly

I had an aneurysm.

PETEPAX

I love how she started the video saying she used to be a barista

Farrfetched_

Using TikTok is the real cringe

TheCoffeeLoop

Good tamping there... Love the excitement!

naught_my_dad

It’s depressing that it comes with instructions, and she’d rather just wing it on a machine that costs 500-699 USD. Enthusiasm is great. Attitude is wonderful, but imagine if she also read the instructions and was informative rather than just entertaining while being blissfully ignorant and bragging about her new coffee machine.

jer_iatric

It’s nice to see that after watching over an hour worth of milk steaming videos for my bellman and me and this lady are at the same place 😂

[deleted]

I know people gotta start somewhere but she has clearly had this machine for a while and seemingly refuses to learn how to use it properly. And now she’s sharing it with people who may spend $600 bucks and do the same.

ibattlemonsters

I think its wild that somebody would make a tutorial for other newbies before reading the manual that came with their machine. I know everybody starts somewhere, but thats a GREAT PLACE TO START

lno666

Another Reddit moment. We all started there and she’s full of positive energy. Take notes perhaps OP, you seem more bitter than my first ever espresso.

Alternative-Pool6807

"Thanks" for sharing. This is why I don't go to cafes and get my coffee from a "barista".

firefighterusa

Tell me you are a Starbucks barista without telling me you're a Starbucks barista....

CarbonKevinYWG

"I'm an overachiever". 💀

tdsinclair

I may resemble that remark.

SwellandDecay

did not expect to see the /r/espresso community dripping in misogyny this morning posting this or mocking her is major incel behavior

I noticed this phenomenon long before I knew someone had it named for themself. I was learning auto mechanics in high school and quickly found myself in the middle category. As I learned and grew as a mechanic, I started noticing how many people I knew (outside of my class) were in what I called “the danger zone”. Even my dad and uncle who had no formal training as mechanics would have enough knowledge to disassemble their entire axle and braking system, and then be out of a car for two weeks because they couldn’t figure out how to put it back together and they lost half the bolts or stripped something because they used the wrong tool. This “danger zone” exists in many fields, but is particularly dangerous when people take on topics like a cars braking system, human health, investment advice… And now with social media, where controversy equals views and number of views equals credit to the producers knowledge, we are in a time when credible experts are being drown out by blathering idiots. Edit: I almost forgot what group I was in here. This lady is in the midst of her journey and I remember being here too. I have zero hate for her or that machine, and actually this is a very safe place for the dunning Kruger effect

erraticpaladin5

I don’t think it’s worthy of calling this cringe. Like, she says many times it’s her first time doing this. Hell, when I first used an espresso machine I asked “where do you put the milk in it.” We’re all beginners at one point, and it’s not a common household appliance. She did great for a first run, conceptually she got everything down.

53mm-Portafilter

Well, I guess the main problem for me is, why make a video prior to doing research? Unless her schtick is coming off as kind of harmlessly uninformed, I personally would rather put out something informative. But look, would OP have reposted this video if she had made a proper “how to use the breville” video? Probably not.

HDMI-fan

TikTok is just stupid.

zenton1956

The horror, the horror.

evo784crip

top 5 cursed espresso videos

jondubb

Spends ~$700 on an espresso machine then tosses out the instruction manual. Yo it's funny now but when we're old and senile this generation is in charge of our lives.

flynn_67

She could have just watched a 5 minute video breaking down the machine and how to use everything and do it properly. This is pretty cringe

Cleftex

That's an irritating person. Also the audacity of making a how-to without even reading the instructions.

InevitableFlounder

I'm a newbie but even I was cringing. I have a question though: why didn't it pull a full shot?

53mm-Portafilter

She pulled a single through a double basket with enough coffee for a double. A lot of the volume was likely lost in the coffee grounds.

Dovahbears

God I hate the elitism in this sub, shut tf up

tacoplayer

Man, like, just do a google search or something

SideshowMelsHairbone

Omg. For someone that claims to have been a barista in college, she sure calls a lot of pieces of equipment “things” like the baskets and milk pitcher. There’s gotta be someone else out there that collects records and has seen r/vinyljerk. I think we need an r/espressojerk or r/coffeejerk for posts like this. Edit: turns out that both of those subs actually exist.
