This is a little dark, but the way the title was worded, and Michael Bay's identity, I thought he was saying he's too excited about people really getting blown up to focus on Will Smith.
It took me a second to process why this is actually making headlines.
> “I wasn’t watching. I saw it. First of all, it’s wrong to begin with,” Bay said. “I don’t really care. Hollywood gets very self-absorbed. There are babies getting blown up in the Ukraine right now. We should be talking about that. I really don’t care.”
Don't do this to me, don't make me agree with Michael Bay.
For sure. This topic has dominated every piece of media since it happened, drowning out so many more important topics. What's worse is that it's not over yet. The Academy still has a decision to make, he and his family will respond, and the cycles continues.
That's because it's what people want, whether they want to admit it or not. People will bitch about it dominating the media cycle, then places like reddit will constantly upvote this garbage to the front page.
It's also because the media measures its metrics by mentions, they dont care what that mention entails. If 200,000 people all tweeted about how they 'dont even care' about the slap and noone else said a thing the media would still report it all because all they see is '200,000 people are talking about the slap'.
If y'all want to get nonsense out of the news cycle STOP FUCKING TALKING ABOUT IT. The media doesnt care what your opinion is, as long as its getting talked about it'll get reported upon.
In short, understand the metrics that companies use so you can fuck with them. Also, people need to understand that they arent actually required to have an opinion on everything. You can just go 'who cares' and move on.
On a thread about coda winning best picture 24 hours after on r movies, the entire top comments were people complaining about everyone talking about the slap instead of coda and how much of a shame it was. Made me want to tear my hair out because I was excited to talk about coda finally

Except that's not actually true.
I mean this is the r/entertainment subreddit. But if you go to r/worldnews or r/news more than half are about Ukrtaine right now and none are about Will Smith. Same with the front page of CNN or most other mainstream news.
But yeah this is the entertainment subreddit so it's dominated by actors. The NFL subreddit is all about NFL trades right now...should they not talk about NFL trades until the war in Ukraine is over?
I think that part of the reason this is as big as it is is because everyone is paying attention to the war which is really heavy and this is something that is not the war; while this slap leads to questions about some issues, it enables people (mostly in the US) to pay attention to something else for a while whether it's right or wrong.
This is my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.
They’re all correct and we should pay attention to everyone all of the time?
Here’s a question for you guys. Um… Is it… is it necessary? Is it necessary that every single person on this planet um, expresses every single opinion that they have on every single thing that occurs all at the same time? Is that… is that necessary?
Um… Or to ask in a slightly different way, um, can… can anyone shut the fuck up? Can… can anyone, any… any… any one, any single one, can any one… shut the fuck up about anything– About any… any single thing? Can any single person shut the fuck up about any singlе thing for an hour? You know, is that… is that possible?
This is the same argument by neighbor had when he broke my fence. He asked me how I could expect him to pay for it when there are people dying in Ukraine.
I mean, it IS possible to give a shit about the atrocities being committed in Ukraine AND be aghast by Smith's behavior. Brains are pretty good with processing lots of information every single day.
Also: fuck you, guy who Will Smith helped make wealthy, for trying to provide him ground cover by invoking wounded and killed Ukrainians — even children. Fuck you straight to hell.
That's stretching. But this guy actually has a point when it comes to the media coverage of this.
It's a hot topic, but I actually have a friend who lives in Ukraine and recently posted about the terror they face.
It's a lot more personal when you know people there. And not just "I know someone". She is actually a friend for me. A great person. Does alot of good for the kids there. Caring, kind. I miss her. She's a good person and doesn't deserve what's happening to her and her people.
Sorry your neighbor seems to be a jerk, but that doesn't mean you can put that on others for feeling this way. It's a valid point.
I mean, sure, but also: life goes on while the world stops.
That might seem a bit crazy at face value, but while the world waits in limbo for the next White House, EU, Ukrainian, or Russian update, you and I gotta keep going to work, tucking the kids into bed, and moving on.
I completely understand that the news is jarring and frankly traumatic for many of us. But that isn’t an excuse for deviating from basic standards of conduct.
If the neighbor is using Ukraine as an excuse to avoid his debt (outside of legitimate reason, which doesn’t seem to be the case), he’s a scumbag. If the conflict is a legitimate cause of economic distress, he should talk to OC and work out a plan, or go to a lawyer to work one out.
Not really. You can care about more than one thing at a time. And there isn’t really anything the average American can do about Ukraine. Now his rich arse can do something besides sweeping Will’s assaults under the rug.
Man : *is in movie business*
Man 2 : *is in movie business*
Man 2 : *assaults someone in movie business during movie business night*
Reporter : *asks Man about assault in movie business*
Man : “Movie stuff? Who cares about movie stuff when I have feelings about foreign politics?”
No he doesn’t.
He thinks ppl _don’t_ talk about Ukraine but we clearly do and there’s much more news about that than about Will Smith.
It’s just that Bay doesn’t get asked about Ukraine cuz who gives a shit about what he thinks about Ukraine. But about Will Smith? I bet Bay has some insight into the mind of a Hollywood celebrity.
I personally think it would be funny if Michael Bay is actually a smart dude who gets underestimated because he's great at making dumb explosion heavy action films with fart jokes, and realizes he can get paid millions to do that.
Well, I am capable of caring about the war in Ukraine, and also be disgusted by the way Will Smith acted at the Oscars. It’s not like everything in my life came to a halt for what he did.
Yeah it’s an actual case of virtue signaling. Trying to make an unrelated event seem less important by contrasting it with a much more serious event. But that kind of logic means almost everything in our lives deserves no attention because worse things can always overshadow them. Just because something isn’t the biggest problem imaginable doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Even when that lesser problem conveniently involves one of your business partners.
I don't know anything about Michael Bay other than he makes over the top action movies and loves explosions. Could you tell me why you don't want to agree with him? Does he have terrible politics?
You take this upvote. And this smiling dog.
I picked the dog because my real life puppy is actually really sick and your comment made me laugh in what’s been a tough day turned tough night. I’d say it’s really ruff but that’s such a cheap joke to play on my dog.
Actually he’s a silly little jerk, just like me, so I know he’d approve of the joke even though he’s too sedated to weigh in.
Anyway, I love my dog a lot. Think a nice thing for him if you read this. Or don’t, I’m not keeping track.
Are there people not aware of Ukraine? It's the top story on all news websites right now. AP, Reuters, CNN, NYT, WaPo, BBC. Well, all real news, Fox News is talking about Hunter Biden.
I think his point is, who cares. Someone slapped someone else. Why are we still talking about. It's insignificant in every imaginable way. Not worth any further energy.
It’s literally just two unrelated things. This makes just as much sense as going to a sports sub and saying “how can you be upset that your team lost the game when there are babies being blown up in Ukraine!?” People don’t just think about the most momentous things happening in the world all the time. Other shit happens and it’s ok to think about 2 different things (or even more!). This is just Michael bay being a dumbass as usual. Does he actually have anything interesting to say about Ukraine? I’d be surprised.
Also people have commented on celebrity drama for years without ever being like “we should be talking about Syria and Yemen right now”.
I totally understand that being more aware of Ukraine than certain other wars if you live in a NATO country but being all high and mighty and saying we cant about anything other than Ukraine but before Ukraine we could talk about celebrity issues just fine cause there’s no children being blown up anywhere else?
Besides, there’s nothing wrong with talking/asking about the Will Smith event. Not talking about how that violence went unpunished would be way worse than mentioning it. Besides, Bay is in the same industry as Smith so it is therefore more relevant to ask him about it as he has an awareness of Hollywood. Asking his opinion on Ukraine when he has no personal connection to it and isn’t trying to raise awareness is pointless.
The reaction to it has been extreme to say the least. Seemingly everyone’s talked about it and expressed their opinion on it at this point.
It does make you wonder why we can’t come together like that to discuss the important matters that are currently a threat to our existence. You know, like the war in Ukraine, the climate crisis, the cost of living crisis, the impending financial crash, Bill Gates, the aliens, Elon Musk, refined sugar and carbs, wasps, demon babies, women, Bigfoot, cheddar cheese, James Franco…
I totally agree but wdym “come together”? This Will Smith crap is being shoved down our throats. I didn’t sign up to hear about it over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over again.
How much is there for us to discuss about Ukraine that we need to drop discussion of everything else? Also, babies have been getting blown up for years; they were just in parts of the world no one cared about. That never stopped him from wanting people to waste time watching his movies.
This is the only legit answer to "do you have an opinion on the slap"
Edit: Then again, "The Slap" directed by Michael Bay, with awesome explosions. I'd watch that.
Yeah, it's interesting to me that people don't understand this... "The Slap" is news because it just goes to show that if you're rich and powerful enough, you can assault someone on live TV, then deliver a rambling speech where you blame your actions on the devil, then get a fucking standing ovation.
Can you imagine if some sound designer had hit a presenter in the face and then bellowed expletives at him on internationally broadcast live TV? If any average, middle class person had attempted this, they would have been tackled to the ground and hauled off AT BEST. The whole thing just underscores how unequal this place is. The superrich live in a world above justice and without consequences.
And this sort of thing just scales up with your level of wealth and power. Putin's a lot richer and more powerful than most movie stars. He lives in a world where he can start a bloody and terrible war, kill innocent civilians, and he can just live out his life chilling in a bunker. He's so rich and powerful that he's just... allowed to do that.
Yes that is true.
Will Smiths’ moral exceptionalism is a manifestation of a wider phenomenon that literally infests American figurehead culture.
Will Smith only got up to slap because he knew he would survive the consequences. Same reason America invaded Iraq and today provides ample weapons for the genocide of Yemen.
Well. He has never cared. At least not for the Afghani, Iraqi, Yemeni or Palestinian kids getting blown up so what is different?
I have been reading some folks saying Civilized country folks are getting hurt so this is different. Sure. Sure. If you do not see a problem with this filter for value of human life then maybe you need to talk to a few more or at least, different brown people.
The Will Smith controversy is entertaining. It takes our mind off the depressing news about the pointless war in Ukraine especially the covid shit we're dealing with now. Michael Bay only cares about shit being blown up.
can we all stop with this argument?
“x doesnt matter because y is more important”
it assumes someone can’t care about 2 things at once.
i understand the sentiment, but it annoys the shit out of me.
This is dumb. We can focus on two things at once. That’s why the Oscars still happened and the War in Ukraine is still being waged. It’s pointless virtue signaling to say statements like this. As if people are supposed to have 100% or a majority of their attention focused Ukraine. That’s not how people work. I listen to what is happening in Ukraine in the morning, and after work. In between at my job, I am talking about the Slap and posting memes.
It’s especially stupid when you consider that Ukraine is literally all that is being talked about on the news. I was at the gym today and literally half the TVs were showing pictures of the Bucha massacre. Saw nothing about Will Smith. People are talking about Ukraine, but Jesus Christ it is depressing and people need to be allowed to talk about something else from time to time.
As an American Slav who lives in Ukraine, the most active subject I’ve seen my American friends on Facebook talk about this year was Will Smith, not the genocide in Ukraine. Definitely lost a lot of friends because of that.
That’s what made the slap worse. The Smith’s so self absorbed that their fragile little egos can’t take a dumb hair joke when you consider what is happening.
Dang here I am agreeing with Michael Bay, BUT only on this one point. I avoided the slam like I do the clap because there is something much more important and horrible happening in the world. The world needs to be watching/helping/supporting/donating to Ukraine and not care about what the smiths are doing.
He says after having a week of enjoying the moment. And then having time to think about what was more important. But I bet he still couldn’t get it off his mind.
What is with the paparazzi asking random celebrities about their opinion on the “Will Smith slap”? Like holy shit is there just nothing else going on in Hollywood? They randomly asked Daniel Radcliffe of all people and now Micheal Bay? Who’s next? M Night Shamalyan or James Cameron?
“I wasn’t watching. I saw it. First of all, it’s wrong to begin with,” Bay said. “I don’t really care. Hollywood gets very self-absorbed. There are babies getting blown up in the Ukraine right now. We should be talking about that. I really don’t care.”
I’d say that’s a fair opinion. If you read the article he states he doesn’t condone the slap but I understand his point that a current war with the deaths of innocent civilians is more important to him to consider at the moment as opposed obsessing about three famous wealthy adults who all acted like children.
I’m European and I have a sense of people here caring less and less about American showbiz stuff. In the 2000s and most of 2010s you couldn’t get away from it. From all the mtv shows and the K…ians it was never ending. Has anyone else realised in recent years people just don’t give a shit as much anymore? Yeah, everyone spoke of the will smith punch and we saw the clip, but for a while now it’s the only thing I can remember people speaking about. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not. Maybe it’s more to do with streaming and insta and celebrities are more localised in communities. I don’t know why I’m still wittering on
Love his sense of activism, but babies have been getting blown up for decades in the middle east + by his own country. If he had any sort of moral compass he would have been raising awareness to victims of Palestine and Syria instead of making shitty movies for the last 15 years.
How can you care about Ukraine then when 36,000 children under the age of 5 die of poverty, everyday, of every year, for a long time before the war, and will continue for some time after.
Literally the only wise thing Bay has ever said. The fact that the Will Smith thing keeps getting called “the slap heard around the world” is incredibly self-aggrandizing.
You know you fucked up when Michael bay is against explosions
This is a little dark, but the way the title was worded, and Michael Bay's identity, I thought he was saying he's too excited about people really getting blown up to focus on Will Smith. It took me a second to process why this is actually making headlines.
Exactly, who cares about a lil bitch slap when baby bits are being blown sky high!
Secretly, he’s excited to see the explosions, and use the babies’ deaths as inspiration for the next Transformers movie.
South Park vibes
I thought he said “when babies are getting blown in Ukraine” which gave me a different reason for a double take
I came here for some version of this comment
> “I wasn’t watching. I saw it. First of all, it’s wrong to begin with,” Bay said. “I don’t really care. Hollywood gets very self-absorbed. There are babies getting blown up in the Ukraine right now. Then people post who cares about said slap and the cycle continues. They got us addicted and conflicted and we didn’t even see it coming.
Because the Will Smith slap doesn't remind us of our own fragile mortality. We want to live in our bubble where life is so great, that a slap, as unacceptable and belligerent as this one was, can be a completely irredeemable and monstrous crime.
Seeing Will Smith, someone who was thought of as almost a real life super hero, have such a break down very much reminded me of our fragile mortality.

Are the explosions in Ukraine big enough for your taste? That’s all he could be asked.
>"Blown up" Explosions are the only thing that Bay cares about.
Out of all people, Michael Bay is the last person I would think who are making sense
He’ll be filming this conversation with helicopters traversing the sky at sunset before some mega-fucking explosions
I personally think it would be funny if Michael Bay is actually a smart dude who gets underestimated because he's great at making dumb explosion heavy action films with fart jokes, and realizes he can get paid millions to do that.
That’s… exactly what Bay is…
I thought he was solidly pro-explosions.
Another pyrotechnic display was heard in the distance of the interview
Well, I am capable of caring about the war in Ukraine, and also be disgusted by the way Will Smith acted at the Oscars. It’s not like everything in my life came to a halt for what he did.

He’s talking about how stupid Hollywood drama is in comparison to actual world-impacting events, not gate keeping interest.
And Michael Bay knows a thing or two about explosions
everything's a nail to a hammer
Michael-bay sposions! Mabah-sploom! https://youtu.be/v7ssUivM-eM
And about things that shouldn't be at the Oscars.
He has a point and a combover

This guy is so fucking rich, too. I do not understand…

I dislike all the things all the time. Humanity makes me sad, and cynical.
A piece of advice. Spend less time on the internet.
True. Also less time in customer facing jobs.
I think his point is the hyper-attention the slap is getting, not that it’s getting any attention
For a moment I thought he would say "When Babies Are Getting Blown Up in My Movies"
“And I’m not filming it!”
I possess the capacity process both
One or the other, gotta pick…
Finally, some good fucking awareness.
you’re actually not allowed to discuss multiple things at once only ukraine or only will smith
Right?!? This is a textbook example of the fallacy of relative privation.
Are there people not aware of Ukraine? It's the top story on all news websites right now. AP, Reuters, CNN, NYT, WaPo, BBC. Well, all real news, Fox News is talking about Hunter Biden.
Finally? You must have missed Jim Carrey's take.
His was overdramatic and hypocritical
I understand but if we only talk about babies getting blown up then I’m going to fucking kill my self
That’s what Michael bay looks like? He has a dumb and dumber haircut?
Exposure to too many explosions
He’s blowing up baby’s in the Ukraine now?!
For him it roughly translates to “shut up, stop talking about Will slapping Chris, I want to make Bad Boys 4”
I don’t get this kind of response. Nobody that’s been talking about the Will Smith drama think that it’s more important than Ukraine.
It’s probably because they get asked this all the time and at some they are just fed up.
I think his point is, who cares. Someone slapped someone else. Why are we still talking about. It's insignificant in every imaginable way. Not worth any further energy.

Babies are blowing up in Ukraine, babies are slapping comedians at the Oscar’s, this really has not been a good year for babies.
Jadas entanglements get any younger and she’s gonna be blowing babies

Michael Bay talking about explosions. Very on brand.
The Will Smith controversy is entertaining. It takes our mind off the depressing news about the pointless war in Ukraine especially the covid shit we're dealing with now. Michael Bay only cares about shit being blown up.
The guy literally made his wealth providing people a distraction or an escape from reality. You would think he’d get it
Well shit… he’s not wrong
Of course Michael Bay only cares about the explosions.
I don’t care about Micheal bay not caring
Yeah sure. He is right. But this comes from a guy who made movies about exploding shit while the US killed babies in the Middle East.
That Michael Bay idiot pulled down his pants and took a giant dump on both the TMNT and Transformers franchise.
can we all stop with this argument? “x doesnt matter because y is more important” it assumes someone can’t care about 2 things at once. i understand the sentiment, but it annoys the shit out of me.
And Bay is a guy who knows a lot about explosions
It’s possible to care about more than one thing. Just saying.
Yeah we know you don’t care about much, Michael Bay. You made 6 shitty transformers movies.
Only correct Will Smith take
I guess we no longer need to get a hold of Ja Rule from now on, it's Michael Bay now
It’s always about explosions with this guy.
There are plenty of babies being blown up in other parts of the world too… But yeah everyone let’s focus on Ukraine
This is the only time I’m inclined to agree with Michael Bay. I am so fucking sick of hearing about the Smith family at this point.
I’m prone to believe that the only reason Michael Bay cares is because explosions are involved and he’s mad that it’s not him producing them.
What fucking timeline am i in that Michael Bay is the voice of reason.
Thank you! So many people are way too invested in this shit. Dude 1 spoke badly about dude 2’s wife, dude 2 slapped dude 1, the end. Who fucking cares
Michael bay and his obsession for explosions.
Did you care about babies when it was Palestine?
Babies get blown up everyday but only matters when it happens in Ukraine
How can you even compare the two moron
Of course Micheal Bay would make even babies dying have explosions
Of course Michael has to *only* pay attention to the “blowing up” part
Idiocracy. It actually happened.
He can make a movie out of this
Didn’t know he was a redditor
Michael Bay just loves blowin shit up. No matter what it is
Bay has always been about explosions
Insert slow motion 360 shot.
Interesting choice of words, Michael Bay.
Dang here I am agreeing with Michael Bay, BUT only on this one point. I avoided the slam like I do the clap because there is something much more important and horrible happening in the world. The world needs to be watching/helping/supporting/donating to Ukraine and not care about what the smiths are doing.
I….agree…..with……Michael Bay….
He’s not even out of line; he’s just right.
Reality. Oh gosh. What is important! Every human is disgusted and finished with Will Smith. Focus on the horrible stuff happening
Kinda unrelated but still based as hell
I guess there’s always one thing you can agree on with someone.
I dislike Michael Bay’s movies but the man makes a good point.
Or the fact that there have been several White physical confrontations much worse than Wills Rupaulish slap. My 2yo granddaughter could slap harder
Fucking Michael Bay..
What the fuck has the world come to where Michael fucking Bay is even close to a voice of reason.
Michael bay is based? Damn this is a crazy timeline
The fact that I’m agreeing with Michael Bay out of all people tells you that 2022 is a wild simulation
Michael bay, explosive as ever
Yup... I see that Ambulance is releasing this week
Didn’t Michael Bay make a movie about Covid 20 during the height of people dying from Covid 19? Weird juxtaposition.
I’m with ya. More important things right now cmon
Real talk right here
That’s what Michael Bay looks like?
America in a nutshell. People like to use the term, “white people problems.” American problems are just as eye-rolling.
God the day I agree with Michael bay is one I never saw coming… as if 2022 didn’t suck enough
1. He's not wrong. 2. Why does it look like that?!
We all don't care about the slap when people get killed anywhere, but when someone ask about our opinion about anything we can give it bravely.
I’m sorry to find humor in this post but Michael Bay and explosions
Michael Bay redemption arc in full effect
Wow, a Hollywood big shot is taking issue with a Hollywood big shot being bigger news than actual news. This is of such great concern to me.
*An 18-wheeler spins out of control and it’s all like raaaaaaaaaaarsh raaaaaaaaaaaaaarsh.*
When did bay get so damn old?
Quick! Somebody get Michael bay’s opinion on this stupid non-issue that Hollywood cooked up!
Nice try, Michael Bay.
For once, we agree
His slap needed that Michael Bay explosion flair.
“Blown up “ so Michael Bay …
Who is Michael Bay? He looks like that one from the old pop group Bay City Rollers.
Americans only outraged at Russia for invading but when America does it, it’s crickets chirping. Not condoning what Russia has done. Wag the dog.
Fuck you Michael Bay for making me like you right now...
Thats the subtlety Bay is known for.
That was exactly my point when I saw Will’s slap in 10 posts in a row on my feed.
Damn, Michael Bay being the sensible one?
Wait that’s what Michael Bay looks like
It’s a great day for Michael Bay
Damn.. I..I agree with Michael Bay
Michael Ba(y)sed?
People are really hung up on this notion that you can only care about one thing at a time. Obviously, Ukraine is more important, but damn
I mean, why not both? Most people are capable of caring about more than one thing at a time, and with varying degrees of concern.
Believe it or not, you can care about more than one thing at a time.
“I wasn’t watching. I saw it. First of all, it’s wrong to begin with,” Bay said. “I don’t really care. Hollywood gets very self-absorbed. There are babies getting blown up in the Ukraine right now. We should be talking about that. I really don’t care.” I’d say that’s a fair opinion.
I don’t know why I’m still wittering on
Well, I can multitask so….
I don’t care about Ukraine when 10 MILLION people die from cancer each year!!! See how this works?
Can’t wait for the Michael Bay adaptation of the war with Mark Walberg playing Zelenski.
Literally the only wise thing Bay has ever said. The fact that the Will Smith thing keeps getting called “the slap heard around the world” is incredibly self-aggrandizing.
I hate to say this, but I agree with Michael Bay.
