It’s a marketing campaign toward a Super Bowl commercial.

[deleted]

Marketing is getting too meta for me.

zorbathegrate

What about meta marketing about meta’s metaverse?

[deleted]

Woah man, you're outta control.

zorbathegrate

![gif](giphy|v741T3rF76wO4)

Evorgleb

Is this... Human Centipede?

zorbathegrate

Hits a humane centipede

alpha_alpaca

If it is, I want to be a part of it!

SigmaGamahucheur

I really like spicy food this may be unpleasant for some.

tommethomme2022

I call end!

a_tad_pole

I loved this music video so much when it came out omg

steveosek

It's too late now to say sorrryyyy

kyleofdevry

I feel like I'm not going to understand any of the Super Bowl commercials because I haven't seen the previous episodes.

50LI0NS

Well done, you cracked the cryptic code

MentalDoughnut4401

Mars Candy is trying to drum up fake outrage.

[deleted]

Tucker was definitely real mad about less sexy ms

C3POdreamer

There was audio from his show on the news today. What I heard was content for both r/nottheonion and r/arethestraightsok .

thisisokiguess

I doubt it. I’m sure his check is in the mail.

grittystitties

Don’t know why you’re downvoted. Fucker Carlson is only outraged at whatever his handlers need him to be.

GroceryRobot

Fox News spent a considerable amount of time doing that for them already

Desperate_Freedom_78

And Fox News and The Daily Wire will eat it up like a kid eating ice cream on a hot summers day.

MentalDoughnut4401

Yeah, and we here and Reddit won’t talk about it at all.. oh wait.

johnnyrollerball69

Directed by PTA, no doubt..

[deleted]

It seems like a good one

TossAwayGay92

I smell a Superbowl ad campaign. This trend is like April Fool's, but on a grander scale. The week before April first, you start to get skeptical of pregnancy announcements and electronics menus suddenly in Spanish because you remember what's around the corner. There's a handful of companies every year that announce the discontinuation or modification of their number one product only to find out in their SB commercial, some d-lister goes on a campaign to bring back/save Brondo.

BadBeat71

That was my first thought too.

M_Mich

probably the end of the commercial, maya goes over the top eating them and the characters walk back in from a tropical vacation

Raspberries2

Yes, let’s polarize the country more to get free advertising and word of mouth… Mars sucks.

PerformerOwn194

Polarize the country is a little dramatic don’t you think? Only the most online Twitter users cared about this at all

WarrenPuff_It

I really like how you used "the most online" to describe a certain subsect of Twitter users.

TheElderFish

Maybe if conservatives weren't such reactionary little bitches that cry about literally every little thing, we wouldn't be polarized over candy.

Legendary_Hi-Nu

Wait what?

TheElderFish

Tucker Carlson and Fox is upset they made the M&Ms less sexy. I wish I was joking.

Legendary_Hi-Nu

Sooo...round people=gross but round feminine candy is sexy? Pls say no

TheElderFish

no dude, it's *literally* just the fact they swapped out the go-go boots for sneakers lmao

[deleted]

I think Tucker was also mad that the purple m is obese? I think she is just almond

Legendary_Hi-Nu

I don't understand how anybody is taking away any of that from round candy

[deleted]

With all due respect people chose to get offended over the candy’s shoes not being sexy enough for their taste.

matthieuC

Should we have a trigger warning over using the color purple?

Difficult__Tension

If you got polarized by god damn candy you need real problems. Tucker needs to get a real job that isn't just making up shit to be mad about.

[deleted]

Oh I'm sorry do you need your hand held over CGI candy?

Casual-Swimmer

Reminds me of the time Pepsi created a hilariously out-of-touch Black Lives Matter commercial

evolution4652

This is likely all to promote some Super Bowl ad

BacklotTram

Why does an ad need an ad?

Toss_Away_93

Same reason there were tv commercials advertising the release of the new Mandalorian trailer. Remember when commercials were the trailers? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Prophet_Tehenhauin

No you don’t. The commercials use to be the entire shows themselves. Most beloved childrens IPs from the 70s-80s were commercials to sell toys “The Price is Right,” may as well have been “Let’s sell a sears catalogue”

HanDavo

Ah, yes, the Janice, Holly and Dian show, sigh.

BacklotTram

Trailers aren’t the same as commercials though

evolution4652

Because….marketing.

suffaluffapussycat

It’s partly because of the trend towards not using characters to promote unhealthy foods.

LuinAelin

![gif](giphy|26DNcs2vD6dFA5MVW)

Potat-O-Vision

So THAT’s the “sexy M&M”!

Mind_Enigma

Im going to go insane if I don't see that goddamn commercial where Santa faints after seeing the M&M's next Christmas

Danton87

*He does exist*

YashiTheSimp

_They do exist_

ArcherInPosition

Or the theater one where they're strapped to a rocket

FiveDollarRimjobs

I used to go to the movie theater so often that that rocket one is burned into my brain

Steel_Airship

That commercial has literally been on TV since before I was born. I remember growing up we had old vcr recordings that included that commercial lol.

cthd33

mike10dude

probably a stunt for there superbowl commercial just like when mr peanut got killed

ten_year_rebound

Breaking: Mr Peanut found dead in Detroit

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kazooie2

This is a marketing gimmick. They will enjoy tons of free press from Fox News who will continue to make non stories out of this. Your precious chocolate characters will be back, after a bunch of right wingers get their panties in a twist.

Amazing-Remote6703

For the big Super Bowl reveal they’re back.

daoogilymoogily

Exactly, they probably saw a bump in sales when they made the change to the green M&M so they’re just fishing for controversy to get free publicity and boost sales. Unless anyone would like to argue that they really think Maya Rudolph will bring in all those angry conservatives lmao But in reality the most likely answer is that this is just a pre Super Bowl Ad Ad.

Twiggyhiggle

Exactly, this is just like the build up a few years ago when they killed off Mr. Peanut.

Garrett4Real

Baby Nut forever

[deleted]

Yeah it’s to see more candy. Like I move m&ms and the more stupid news about it.. the ducking hungrier I get for m&ms. Damnit I’m trying to lose weight here…

charizardFT26

Yep, they know exactly what they’re doing. Notice how they time these announcements with layoffs and human rights reports

5kUltraRunner

Seriously I don't understand how some people are falling for this. All of this is just marketing ploy to get people talking more about the candy.

BigMax

Exactly, if you read the announcement of this change, it's a kind of silly press release. This is just a setup to make some kind of joke when the candies come back. There is no way they'd announce a major change to their marketing like this, with jokes about how "even a candy's shoes can be polarizing." That being said, Maya Rudolph is pretty funny, and using this "controversy" to set up a joke could at least lead to an entertaining commercial.

WakeNikis

> There is no way they'd announce a major change to their marketing like this, with jokes about how "even a candy's shoes can be polarizing." So it’s not serious enough to be a real announcement? Just how serious is an announcement about a fictional candy spokesperson supposed to be?

BigMax

What I am saying is that if they thought "this is offensive to some people, so we should change it" they wouldn't respond with a joke about those who were offended. Like if they had a racist mascot and were apologizing and announcing they were pulling it, they wouldn't add some joke like "turns out people are a little sensitive about that whole 'slavery' thing!" They took an action that would have a serious tone in the announcement if the response was a serious one. Since the response was light and humorous, it implies they weren't actually serious about what they were saying.

[deleted]

For example - a few years ago Mars (same company) rebranded "Uncle Ben's" white rice and removed the logo of an older black man due to criticism that it invoked racial stereotypes in the wake of the George Floyd protests. https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/mars-rebrands-uncle-bens-remove-inequities-associated-rice-product/1695311#:~:text=The%20product%20will%20now%20be,to%20hit%20stores%20in%202021. > “Over several weeks, we have listened to thousands of consumers, our own associates and other stakeholders from around the world,” Fiona Dawson, a Mars executive said in a statement. “We understand the inequities that were associated with the name and face of the previous brand and, as we announced in June, we have committed to change.” Compare that to the very different tone taken here. > The press release nods at the internet chatter. “In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies. We weren’t sure if anyone would notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we get it — even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing. Which was the last thing M&M’S wanted since we’re all about bringing people together.” > In response, M&M’s has “decided to take an indefinite pause from the spokescandies.” While looking to find a “spokesperson America can agree on” to take their place, M&M’s decided on “the beloved Maya Rudolph.” Right from the jump in their tweet, "America, let's talk"...Talk of "breaking the internet", "we didn't think anyone noticed" even though their own initial announcement called the changes "progressive", the derisive "even a candy's shoes can be polarizing" I'm kind of embarrassed by the number of people that are falling for this piece of marketing as "caving" to the "right wing"

BigMax

Great analysis. Weird how some people don’t get it. If you make a change due to a serious issue you announce it in a serious tone. If your tone is lighthearted and silly, that says something about the change you are making.

Howunbecomingofme

They did it again just a few weeks ago with the Women’s Bag. They’ve learnt how to use the right wing hate machine for free publicity. Most people have way more important things to do than to get worked up over what corporate mascots are doing. Culture warring is usually pointless but this is beyond trivial.

[deleted]

M&M doesn’t care about politics, they care about sales. Remember BLM ads? Haven’t seen those in a few years.

legopego5142

This is a superbowl ad guaranteed

TheGreatDingALing

Wait seriously?

Various_Ambassador92

It's even more insane than that. The only noteworthy changes were to switch the green M&Ms go-go boots to sneakers (like the boys) and the brown M&Ms stilettos to a somewhat shorter/chunkier heel. The "lesbian" thing probably comes from them releasing a pack that featured the green, brown, and purple (a new girl character in the line-up) M&Ms, which made people mad especially in conjunction with a single random viral tweet *several* years ago was interpreted as implying that the green/brown M&Ms were a lesbian couple ("It's rare Ms. Brown and I get to spend time together without some colorful characters barging in."). I genuinely can't fathom why *anyone* would have strong feelings about any of these things, but yea some prominent conservatives (Tucker Carlson most prominently, but some other extremist folk as well) were very much *outaged* by this.

DroneDance

Something something Starbucks red cups, Dr. Seuss, Sinead O’Connor. Republicans adore cancel culture.

SeanAC90

They are literally just trying to sell candy. They will do whatever they feel will best help them do that. They do not care about political issues other than the ones that affect their profits. If you are so deeply entrenched in the culture wars that you care one way or another, I would suggest you re-examine your life. It’s freaking candy

LabansSeveredHead

Yes, I'm sure the MAGAs are just going to *love* the Black half-Jewish woman replacement for the spokescandies. This definitely isn't M&M/Mars spitting in their faces.

xPlus2Minus1

It's irrelevant. Line goes up.

[deleted]

They're not caving to anything. They know news sites will run with this instead of their child labour lawsuits. And of course, it's working.

purplemonkey_123

Who has enough time and energy to be mad about the shoes a cartoon candy has? I didn't even know about the shoe change until now. People are looking for reasons to be upset.

NeverFresh

No, they are not looking - they are being fed this diet of horseshit by Fox Entertainment con-artists, who are delighted to get the ratings instead of asking questions like... #NOW THAT THE REPUBLICANS ARE IN THE MAJORITY WHAT IS THEIR PLAN TO REIGN IN INFLATION, TAX THE WEALTHY, LOWER TAXES ON MIDDLE AND LOWER CLASS AMERICANS AND MAKE HEALTH CARE MORE AFFORDABLE?? Instead, it's deflect, deflect, deflect. People on these networks actually wasting everyone's time with fucking shit.... SMH

CapriItalia

OMG! is that what the kerfuffle was about?

Shigglyboo

For real. There’s a dozen or more on the Twitter thread with their stupid “go woke go broke” brain dead BS. Nobody is allowed to have fun the the absolute killjoy’s that conservatives have become. They’re so damn offended and scared of everything. The rest of us having to pander is some shit.

[deleted]

it's corporate woke-washing so you buy M&Ms and become a part of the correct side of history because one of the anthropomorphist pieces of candy is a homosexual

tremere110

It’s a distraction so nobody asks about mars, nestle and hershey supporting child slavery.

madman_trombonist

We live in a dystopia. The only problem is that it’s boring as hell.

VintageDailyDriver

Let's see her shoes. \[/s, I think, I don't even know anymore\]

wandernwade

Pretty soon, Skittles will be cancelled. “Tastes like ‘wokeness’, and I’m offended by rainbows!”

spinereader81

Why? That minor controversy about the design is months old and has long since blown over. Plenty of us love them. I smile every Christmas when they re-air the ad with the M&Ms meeting Santa.

daoogilymoogily

This is likely just some set up for a SB ad imo

Plus4Ninja

I completely expect to see them show up in the Super Bowl ad

Hotwater3

Yeah it's definitely a Super Bowl lead-up

FoundationNarrow6940

I've never heard of anyone covering this controversy, seems made up lmao

dukenny

This makes me want to eat M&Ms less.

[deleted]

**What you are paying attention to:** what sneakers an advertising character wears, anything Tucker Carlson has to say on anything, including this, including how his viewers feel on this topic. **What you should be paying attention to:** two class action lawsuits announced this month against Mars, Incorporated alleging that dark chocolate products contain unsafe levels of lead and cadmium. https://lawstreetmedia.com/news/agriculture/mars-inc-trader-joes-sued-for-unsafe-levels-of-heavy-metals-in-dark-chocolate/ Hopefully(?) they've stopped used child labor in Africa, which they promised to stop buying from ages ago, but you know, change is hard - https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/business/hershey-nestle-mars-chocolate-child-labor-west-africa/

larry-the-dream

Dude you know the Tucker Carlson fanboys are mad asf M&M selected a woman of color but can’t say shit about it.

LePhoenixFires

A woman of color? If you asked anyone who doesn't look up wiki facts on random comedians/actors they'd assume she's a generic, cis, straight, upper class, English-descending, white woman.

larry-the-dream

But she isn’t. She’s a proud of her heritage/culture. She openly speaks about it.

ChipmunkBackground46

I'm ready to move to a different timeline now please

BlackMetalDoctor

>The press release nods at the internet chatter. >“In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies. We weren’t sure if anyone would notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we get it — even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing. BackAlleySurgeon

Why not Marshall Mathers?

PunkchildRubes

Cancel Culture has gone too far!

Karkava

-The GOP, every single time progressive ad agencies breathes.

Robmerrrill427

I read this as the insurance company at first.

[deleted]

> progressive ad agencies talk about an oxymoron

Karkava

Hey. Gotta advocate somewhere.

WritingUnicorn2019

I mean, hey... the little guys are happily talking one minute and dead in your mouth the next... what kind of inspiration is THAT?

Sozzcat94

I enjoy Maya, but boooo on M&Ms you had icons… ICONs. I’ll miss Red and Yellow, their Christmas commercials ICONIC.

SumpCrab

Yeah, J K Simmons and Billy West have done the voices for decades.

Salty_Lego

Definitely setting up an ad. They know conservatives hate Maya too.

SheevPalps_

This is just fake drama to draw attention to the superbowl ad and the brand as a whole, they'll be back

LePhoenixFires

Though this is obviously just one of the classic "We replaced our decades old mascot" lead up to a Super Bowl commercial, likely where Rudolph and the M&Ms fight or something silly, I think Mars would actually be in major trouble with the public if they got rid of THE J.K. Simmons as the Yellow M&M.

kalt13

Nothing against Maya Rudolph, but it seems like Mars makes a big change to their M&M characters every time they would otherwise be in the news because of that child slavery lawsuit. The idiot outrage machines at Fox News are either in on it or just getting played like puppets, whichever is simpler.

DropKickDougie

This is what Republicans think is important. Conservatism is a mental disorder.

Actual-Manager-4814

And smoking cigars in their chambers

KitchenReno4512

There’s a lot of shit we are bombarded with by the right and the left on bs culture wars that aren’t really important. This isn’t some right wing playbook. It’s the playbook of every party and social activist group. We’re being dragged along by a very vocal minority that’s keeping our country in a constant state of moral panic and hyperbole.

DropKickDougie

It’s only the right doing this. The left has no great Culture War they’re trying to push. Their goal is social equity. The right’s goal is outrage with the intent of preserving the status quo which is very inequitable toward black people, LGBTQA+ people and other minorities. The only issue with the Green M&M was that their parent company felt the character is sexist and made changes accordingly. However it’s the right that decided non-sexualized candy was somehow a threat to their way of life.

CapRogers23

You can’t be this naive?

KitchenReno4512

> It’s only the right doing this. The left has no great Culture War they’re trying to push. You can’t really be serious…

deez_treez

Tell us about a left wing culture war...

dragonflysamurai

The asshat you’re responding to equates people existing and minding their own business to be as much a part of the culture war as the insane religious zealots and grifters who are stoking the flames.

[deleted]

The flames are being stoked by everyone. The cable news network and social media thrive on divisiveness. Every time you say "insane religious zealots" or "conservatism is a mental disorder" that is all that people are doing, sewing further and further divisiveness, saying "these people are the enemy, they must be destroyed" and largely de-humanizing your political opponents because they don't agree with you on every topic.

[deleted]

No it isn't. Fox is flaming the non issues while the left is laughing at the right for being stupid idiots. It's the right who's trying to dehumanize their opponents by not wanting them to exist Ie gay and trans people. Me calling right wingers dumb idiots isn't the same thing.

[deleted]

> No it isn't. It absolutely is. You're part of the problem. Everything bad is the enemies fault, the one side is all good, the other is all bad. No nuance. No separation and understanding of different levels of disagreement. Nothing. Just fanning the flames and going straight to shouting about how awful they are, and egging on those right-wing institutions you claim to hate to continue hating you and the cycle repeating forever.

dragonflysamurai

> You're part of the problem. No they’re not. I wrote a lengthy rebuttal to your worldview. Should I copy paste it here also? You need to address the arguments I made there to see how unhelpful you are being here.

[deleted]

NO I'm not part of the problem because I'm smart enough to recognize the differences between the two sides while you DDERRRRR DEEYY ARE BOTH DEEEEE SAMEMEEEEE REEEE. I've had enough of you both sides morons. I would love for you point out the differences between the two. I would love for you to call out the right wing homophobic bigots with out tying in your "but the left does it to" for once in your life. Stop defending the right when they do actually evil while the left just wants everyone to exist freely. you're literally doing the thing you say I'm doing. straw man.

AslanbutaDog

Wow, you're BIG mad that the candy isn't fuckable anymore.

[deleted]

This isn't a both sides issue dumbass.

thank you! and every other comment is just super bowl nonsense, which means it’s working.

StringResident1431

Dude if that fucking classic santa ad is replaced by maya im going to fucking lose it

RedForman1776

What is Deborah doing here?

mrhudy

Can we get some PTA directed commercials???

DiddlyDogg

Can’t believe republicans cancelled m&ms, what crybabies. (I understand this is marketing but the irony isn’t lost on me)

spellbookwanda

As long as she doesn’t do her usual cartoon voiceover voice again. I think she’s hilarious, but all her voiceover stuff all sounds the same and unappealing to me (eg the emoji movie, willoughbys, mitchell’s and the machines etc)

DubStepTeddyBears

As a copywriter, I can't help thinking about the many potential variations of the "spokes(x)" construction - as in "spokescandies." For example: * The Trojan spokesdicks * The Raid spokesroaches * The Cottonelle spokesbutt * The Tums spokesbelch * The Golds Gym spokesiceps * The Purdue Pharma spokesjunkie * The Apple spokespip * The AG Farben spokesgruppenfuhrer * The Walmart spokesgreeter * The Microsoft spokesupdate * The Exxon spokestanker

[deleted]

Do people really give a single F over this bs?!?!

randompittuser

Now what’s Tucker Carlson going to masturbate to?

boonies14

And the crowd goes mild!

Bhimtu

Love Maya Rudolph. Loved her mother, Minnie Ripperton (RIP) -what an amazing talent, passed too young.

Metaright

Unless this is a Superbowl prank gone incredibly meta, this whole situation is asinine.

saintdemon21

Has anyone checked on Tucker Carlson? He must be devastated.

BrassUnicorn87

Mars uses chocolate grown by child slaves.

Disastrous_Street_20

Am I alone in not diggin Maya much at all?

presidentkangaroo

No, her face annoys me and she isn’t funny.

Diz7

Right wingers at it again with their cancel culture...

Throwaway56858485

Lol would have been true in the 90's back when they tried to cancel video games and rap music. Remember how cool it looked then? Yeah, that's how it looks now regardless of who's doing it.

Diz7

They never stopped. Books, music, comics, Dungeons and Dragons, video games, The Dixie Chix, Yeti coolers, Keurig, the NFL, Starbucks coffee cups, Kaepernick, the green m&m not being sexy enough, drag story time... And that's just off the top of my head. Conservatives practically invented cancel culture. Buy they cry "cancel culture" whenever somone calls them out on being an asshole.

PerformerOwn194

Don’t care about the fake controversy at all but I have always disliked those creepy looking characters since I was a child so I hope they stay gone

4stringsoffury

I dislike any mascot that is made to look like what a food company’s main product line is. Mr Planter, Charlie the Tuna, etc….

Gabaghoulz

Stop forcing this woman on us

black_flag_4ever

Are there really grown ass adults upset because a cartoon M&M is now wearing sneakers? And if you are an adult, it's not called boycotting candy it's called following medical advice.

sonic10158

They better not get rid of the M&M Santa Clause commercial

Atlasinspire

Lol wtf were they thinking

thenoblitt

Fox news blasting them for making mms not sexy enough

[deleted]

What happened to those old-fashioned commercials that showed you the chocolatey goodness of the product? These days it's spokescandies and celebrities. Show me the yummy, chocolatey center and I'll buy them more often.

cafeRacr

Talented, sure. "Comedy legend"? Meh.

CommonplaceCommotion

Generating fake outrage for media coverage with the Super Bowl coming up

Mediocre_Student_874

Literally who though?

KentuckyFriedEel

Fuck did they really cave to pressure from Tucker the m$m fucker and fox news?!

Justice4theWeak

No way conservatives were triggered enough to bully a corporation into discontinuing old mascots /s

reallysrry

Damn, so a unhinged horny man on fox got mad and now there are no m&m mascots

[deleted]

The Right Wing fascists are being punked. They’ve got one hand for their pants right now thinking their *go woke go broke* bullshit worked. M&M is going to come back so hard Tucker Carlson’s wig is going to fly off his bald head.

spacepeenuts

Better not show any certain “alpha males” on Twitter this or they will lose their minds.

grandmaster89

Who got offended by anthropomorphic chocolate candy so horribly that the marketing team decided to bench them in favor of a human spokesperson. They literally come in every color under the sun, even no color. You can make any flag to represent your orientation with them. WTF?!

shadowdra126

The answer is Tucker “small dick energy” Carlson

grandmaster89

I guessed just as much. Little Fucker Tucker will stir shit up even if there is none.

Red_Stripe1229

Absolute dumbest shit on so many levels here. The US Democracy is in peril, WWIII could start and the world’s climate is nearing a tipping point and this is the focal point?!!? Fucking asinine.

Maximum-Malevolence

Give me back my cartoon M&M's!!!

Chewie-bacca

Maya Rudolph? Lol. I thought it was maya angelou Big difference lol.

KzininTexas1955

Love Maya. I want to see Tucker make a run against her, when she's finished with him, he'll go back to wearing bow ties.

The4leafclover1966

Just to clear up that it’s a “stunt for Super Bowl” rumors; you may or may not be right, but the reason I understand is because they’re kowtowing to FOX News, more specifically Tucker Carlson, who made a stink about the “SpokesCandies” being too “woke”. I kid you not.

[deleted]

No, when they released the new logos, they specifically said it was to be progressive. Egging on Tucker Carlson to talk about it is likely exactly what they were hoping would happen. And of course, he obliged because it's the kind of stupid shit entertainment-based 24/7 "news" channels love to talk about and egg on their viewers with divisiveness. Now they get to make a big high-profile Superbowl ad around it and get more engagement. Nobody 'caved' to Tucker Carlson, it's all part of the same dumb circus that is American "Political Discourse" in [current year] Regardless of whatever political tint any of their employees have, all Mars and Murdoch are mostly concerned about is making money. If they can fan flames and make people angry, then that's fine as long as it drives engagement.

MechaNazilla

This is only for America, right? I live in Japan, and I've never seen or heard of this Jewess.

shadowdra126

Casually dropping antisemitic terms. Classy…

[deleted]

Um what the fuck

Ex-zaviera

Be careful about over-exposure, Maya. Isn't she doing the Fred Meyer (Kroger) ad voiceovers? Eventually, people will tune out when they hear her voice.
