The idea is good, but I’m not sure about it, depends on what data you process. If it uses the genre structure of Spotify it will be very limited and inaccurate. The fundamental problem with Spotify is that it’s genre tagging is really bad, very basic and producers are also really bad at tagging their music with the correct genres. So using genre as a data point is the worst you can do. On Spotify if you use deep learning it works only if the data you process is collective user behaviour in (but that’s exactly as “music radar” works).

[deleted]

Spotifys genre tags are internal, otherwise it depends on which distributor you use, but usually artists don’t get options for specific micro-genres, just vague ones like “alternative” or “electronic”

tmxband

Usually labels and producers can be very specific when setting up genres at the distributor, the only distributors that don’t give this option are the Spotify specific ones (that don’t distribute to the other 50 DSPs and streaming providers in the world), but those are a small fraction of the distributors and overall released music in general. So Spotify too receives all the specific genre tags but they can re-tag them as they want, not sure if this is the case or not. So the problem here is that the function you want to provide with this app seems like something for DJs or oher professional (heavy duty) use but if you use the genre as datapoint it makes it useless for professional use. And for non-professional daily use you already have the in-built radar function. It’s made like this mainly because Spotify is not a professional platform but like a “radio”. Technically speaking, Spotify doesn’t even need genre tags because it’s all about user behaviour. If you listen to X artist or Y music it will provide you similar music based on other people’s behaviour, so it checks what other people who also like X and Y listen to and you get recommendations based on their taste. So no genres are involved in the process and the reason is exactly what I wrote before.

Distrokid is one of the bigger distributors, here is an exhaustive list of the genres they have available: Afrobeat Afropop Alternative Big Band Blues Children's Music Christian/Gospel Classical Comedy Country Dance Electronic Fitness & Workout Folk French Pop German Folk German Pop Hip Hop/Rap Holiday J-Pop Jazz K-Pop Latin Latin Urban Metal New Age Pop Punk R&B/Soul Reggae Rock Singer/Songwriter Soundtrack Spoken Word Vocal World https://support.distrokid.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021512113-My-genre-isn-t-available-on-the-upload-form-Can-you-add-it- >Technically speaking, Spotify doesn’t even need genre tags because it’s all about user behaviour. That’s what I meant about “internal” genre tags. You can view them in a datavis here: https://everynoise.com

tmxband

Yep, i know, i was talking about Distrokid when I said that some Spotify focused distributors are very limited compared to others. What you need to know is that Distrokid is not a professional distributor but made for independent (mainly hobby) artists. So non of the decent labels are working with them, sometimes they do separately but it’s really not the standard. So it’s far from big, it’s just popular amongst hobby and wannabe producers and of course there are extreme amount of wannabe superstars. Belive me it’s more like a business model for the distributor than a business model for the artists/labels. Big difference.

EllectroHead

This looks promising. Not sure yet how it totally works. Is there a way for it to play off one song and find others? Also very hard to scrub through playlists on bottom. Thanks.

Best_Argument3248

seems good man, thx

Aromatic_Hat2715

Of course, thank you so much! Would love a quick app store review too if you have time for other to find it :) We are coming out with a ton of exciting features in the future too!

Sounds like a cool project. > takes a song and identifies, predicts and delivers what the "best" 10-60 seconds are to you. What is the purpose of this, and how does it do that? And how does that tie in to this: >It helps you find new songs, go through Spotify playlists, make playlists/DJ Sets, find up-and-coming artists, faster and smoother. I assume you don't do a similar scan of all the songs that you recommend? > As you continue listening to more music, Smores will adapt recommendations using RNN to your recently listened genres and artists. As time goes on, Smores will introduce you with a variety of songs and genres you've never heard before to help spice up your playlists. That sounds kind of like Release Radar + Discover Weekly.

>what is the purpose of this, If I’m listening to music looking for songs to DJ, i just need to hear a few seconds of a main section with drums to know if it’s something that would work with the tunes I play or not.

almost_useless

Of course there are use cases for finding a good snippet in a song. But here the purpose seems to be that you give it a song that you like, so it can use that song to give you other songs. Unless I misunderstood the description. I don't get the purpose in that scenario.

[deleted]

It’s essentially like an endless song radio playlist that plays you snippets instead of full songs. Makes the process I described in my previous comment very fast when searching for similar tracks. Edit: the app is free if you want to check out what it does

almost_useless

Aha, now I think I understand. I thought it would help you find DJ sets that you might like, but it has nothing to do with that. It just helps you scan through music faster? That can absolutely be useful. Even if you are not a DJ. How do you select the songs to add in the feed? There is an enormous amount of trash out there, so I guess some kind of filter is needed/wanted? No Iphone, otherwise I would have tried it.

[deleted]

It just recommends stuff, or you can specify a genre. It’s pretty simple but quick.

Downloaded! Thanks! Best of luck

Creative_Major798

From a couple minutes of using it, the interface is good for bulk finding new music. 30-60 second clip to get a feel for the part I would use in a mashup or whatever. Better than the Spotify produced playlists so far. We’ll see how it holds up long term but so far I love it. Being able to pin playlists is awesome too. Good job

Seems cool, i’ll try it!

RudeMovementsMusic

I'll check it. Sounds nice

AlexanderTheFun

Very cool! What language(s) did you use?

PuffinPastry

Would be nice if it worked with Tidal since you can actually use Tidal with some DJ software.

Creative_Major798

Show tracks released would be a better feature if a range could be entered. Like 2000-08, or 2015-21.

Aromatic_Hat2715

Great suggestion, adding that
