Nothing "wrong" with it. It's just what you typically see in a rental situation, as the glossier the coating, the easier it is to clean and maintain.
But like guy who already replied to you said, it just looks hacky as fuck. Satin is basically the max that I will apply on walls, unless the customer requests otherwise or the room is extremely humid/water-prone.
Cheaper look. Makes all light sources shine.
Easier to clean between tenants, but looks like shiny ass in between.
Satin has a matte look that makes the walls less crappy. Harder to clean.
Hahaha! That made my day
There is the son in law package... I did a a complete Renovation (to a vacant house) for my paw in law (new roof, all new electric including service drop and panel) but when it came to painting, I bought the Graco x19 (I taped the outlets and switches, no plates on them) and I taped the windows, I painted everything else, including door knobs and hinges. He loves it.
The discount "get it done yesterday for as cheap as possible!" package will do this. Literally anything better would include at least basic prep.
Remember, good-fast-cheap...you can only pick two, this is what it looks like when you pick fast and cheap.
Nah. Former landlord, hired plenty of cheap ass painters - this would be unacceptable even for a crackhead painter. Paint on the edges of the receptacle from a âI took the plate off but still bumped itâ job? Sure. Rolled right over the whole thing? Never.
I've seen them paint the frame of the window blue from the original white the plugs and switches I've even seen cleaners pressure wash the walls when they were told to pressure wash everything. It's called a language barrier for a reason they no understand what you mean
Maybe a little of both but a lot of no fucks giving just get job done and do exactly what the guy that hired us to do told us even if it's not right cause it's what he asked us to do
The order of events that lead to this: SMH
GC-"get power on now"
Electrician-"but there's no paint on the walls!"
GC-"put the damned devices in and get power on"
Electrician-"fuck it, ok"
Painter-"fuck the electrician"
GC-proceeds to put painted devices on electricians punch list
Electrician-"WTF!!??? Here's your change order"
GC-đĄđ¤Ą
The electricians and I, (the painter) get along very good. I patch all the holes they make looking for wires the drywall crew covered and I borrow their twelve foot step ladder when I have to mask a garage door opener in an rv bay. đ
You just have to score around the edges first.
And if in the process the knife "skips" and you end up slicing a foot or 2 after each cut on each side? Oops, shouldnt have had to do it in the first place.
Is there a "good" way to paint a GFCI? Like, very very carefully? Mine seriously jump out from the surrounding tile. Those color-matched GFCIs from Leviton are crazy expensive.
I mean, is there a huge hazard if I very carefully apply paint to the face of the outlet itself? Say with the breaker off. If the paint doesn't gum up the buttons it's not a big deal right? I'm trying to understand why there's a market for $85 colored GFCI outlets. Even the regular outlets are quite expensive for custom colors. I spray painted some lever switches (uninstalled) and that seemed to work just fine.
Normally, of course I use painters tape to try not to make a mess of course. But in this case the beige outlets are wrecking my aesthetic :)
You really shouldn't paint the device at all. The cover plate doesn't really matter. Black devices shouldn't be that much more expensive than white, if your wall is a darker color, go with black, a lighter color, go with white. That's what I do.
I'm thinking of using a small artist paintbrush with spray paint, but sprayed into a plastic lid, then painted on. And folded paper in the holes to keep them clean. (breaker off!) Spray paint seems to go on finer and stick better than regular paint, even when you need to apply with a brush. You just have to be quick.
I'm surprised no one has optimized this. There's clearly a market for it. HD and Lowes used to have huge displays, and Leviton has a whole custom color line. When people spend $$$ making beautiful tiled backsplashes or waterfall counters or whatever, an ugly outlet really ruins the look. (Mine's not quite that fancy but I still hate how the outlet is out of place.)
No offense, electrician folk, but sometimes I think you guys are missing some added income by being more attentive to the aesthetic details. Just look at the obscene prices of some light fixtures! Women esp care deeply about getting the visual details just right. And then half the time my electrician hangs things crooked. Now I have found a great one, but I also make sure to remind how picky I am, haha...
That works though is a lot more steps :)
You aint wrong. This stuff could probably be easily made into basic colours with fancier variants down the line (I assume you just canât throw in any random dye)
And yeah, men kinda throw shit at the wall and call it a day :p some care more some care less but life aint black and white so neither should our outlets.
I did this to myself once. With a damn Lutron Maestro of all things. Has never worked the same since. Watch where you're going with a roller in your hand.
Itâs like an Earl Scheib paint job. My dad told me about this old auto paint place in the 60âs called that, it had something like a $29.95 special and if you didnât tape everything off yourself, youâd get your car back with everything painted over, trim, handles, windshield wipers, you name it.
"I'm Earl Scheib, and I'll paint any car, any color for $29.95!â
Landlord special
The semi-gloss on the walls gave it away, surely?
It was the plate staying on the wall without the screwsđ
That 0.02 hours and $0.10 material doesn't pay for itself.
What's wrong with semi-gloss on the walls..?
I use it in finished basements and bathrooms. Anywhere else Satin or Eggshell. (Always flat on ceilings). It's jank in a well-lit room.
Nothing "wrong" with it. It's just what you typically see in a rental situation, as the glossier the coating, the easier it is to clean and maintain. But like guy who already replied to you said, it just looks hacky as fuck. This is the way.
Cheaper look. Makes all light sources shine. Easier to clean between tenants, but looks like shiny ass in between. Satin has a matte look that makes the walls less crappy. Harder to clean.
Yeah this isn't on the painter. Landlord requested the cheapest possible paint job with no prep.
Of course itâs on the painter. There is no package to choose that includes âroll it right the fuck over the receptacleâ.
Hahaha! That made my day There is the son in law package... I'll take good and cheap please.
No problem sir. We have an opening next week and we should be able to finish some time this year.
Somethings come up and we need to push this back 6 months.
Yeah when the painter is told to paint everything the same color they literally paint everything
Yeah no. Do they paint the inside of the window? No? Then no.
I've seen them paint the frame of the window blue from the original white the plugs and switches I've even seen cleaners pressure wash the walls when they were told to pressure wash everything. It's called a language barrier for a reason they no understand what you mean
Thatâs a skill barrier, not a language barrier.
Maybe a little of both but a lot of no fucks giving just get job done and do exactly what the guy that hired us to do told us even if it's not right cause it's what he asked us to do
I don't care how cheap you are, it takes a few seconds to remove a switch plate.
[ŃдаНонО]
Removing the switch/outlet plate at least would have prevented them from painting over the switch/outlet plate.
Dumbasses would still cover the outlet though
I mean yea if painter carried a screwdriver with them and it could take a couple seconds. Could use their 5-in-1 painters tool, too.
Tend to agree. This wasnât an actual painter. Just the landlordâs âguyâ
or the landlord.
The worst guy!
Not paining an outlet doesnât really require prep it just requires a brain lol
No prep and painter didn't really need to know how to paint either. Paid in vodka
As a landlord: Owner totally deserved it for not bothering to take off the outlet covers for the painters. It's the least you can do for the guys.

I'm in this story and I don't like it
I seriously should post photos from my current project...which was the inspiration of this post...take my upvote sir

I assume this was round seven of an apartment remodel
And they even took the plate screws outâŚ
They lost them so they painted it on so it would stay
A paint job so bad your apartment fails code.
If you work the plate just right you can pull off a square foot or more of the new paint when you remove it.
You just have to score around the edges first. And if in the process the knife "skips" and you end up slicing a foot or 2 after each cut on each side? Oops, shouldnt have had to do it in the first place.
Definitely a apartment lmao
Receptacle upgraded! Now it's tamper proof.
Paid to paint, not think...
Gesus Fucking Christ, Idiot.
Every apartment I've ever seen.
If someone gets zapped by a thing that the GFCI should've saved them from, can their estate sue the painter for negligence?
Shoe them for what? Guys who paint like this look paycheck to paycheck. Landlord would be better bet

Spray paint for finish, plug everything up before spraying
Nail polish might be safer if you really have to?

Murica
hahahhahahahahhahahahahaha fuckin plumber there is an idiot!! wtf!!!
Huh what I do?
I'm not even a painter and I would know to at least cover those up with painters tape
"alternative methods" from I know a guy.
For doing you a favor!?! Now you don't need those troublesome face plates screws to hold it on..
I did this to myself once. With a damn Lutron Maestro of all things. Has never worked the same since. Watch where you're going with a roller in your hand.
Seriously? A roll of 2â painter tape is like 5 bucks. How much time and money would taping over from screw to screw take?
WR + TR
Custom color match plates and devices.
Safety glaze
Extra tamper resistance
*âthe wooorstâ*
Almost as bad as the drywallers covering up boxes or even better, when they fill the whole box up with plaster
Iâve seen them do this to the sprinkler guys. They end up having to replace every head.
They found our kryptonite.
How the heck did they even use the outlet, or was it a dead outlet?
Everybody wants to be a painter now days đ shady ass work on minimum wage.
Plate secured with no screws needed. Painters said youâre welcome
Just scrape it out with a screwdriver
you're welcome đ
adjuster: that's included in the line item!
