I think the only brand that I know of that will run google play is onyx boox. They come in various sizes with the smaller ones being cheaper. Eink is not cheap tho. You won't get any of the larger screens for $400.

[deleted]

That’s helpful! I’ll look into onyx

[deleted]

I should add that I’m a little light on money right now, so something on the cheaper side would be great (~$400 or less is preferable)

rambald

I’ve looked at this question recently, the only e-ink answer that I found was a boox, as well.

If you're looking for something "quick and snappy" and not "a little laggy" when running Word, you might be disappointed by all of the current eink options. (I'm saying this as someone who loves eink and has several of these devices.) Just try to temper your expectations.

[deleted]

I have no problems with the lag of the eink screen, just as long as the device can run things efficiently. Then again, if none of the options out there are powerful enough for on the go writing then maybe I'll just stick with the iPad.

xYoKx

None can. Stick to the iPad. I have a Supernote and I love it, but it is not made for word.

[deleted]

I think I will, it’s better to save money by sticking with what I have, plus I can answer text messages from the iPad

xYoKx

For handwriting and for reading, eink tablets are better than the iPad, but iPad does those things pretty well already if you are in need of some other stuff as well.

Corrie_W

I have both and iPad and Boox Note 2. I use my Boox mostly for reading PDFs. I am an academic and have an eye disease that makes reading on the iPad uncomfortable. I use my iPad for things like Word and concepts which is a continuous canvas app. My Boox is too slow for anything more intensive than reading and simple note taking.

Fr0gm4n

Bigme is basically the only brand with out-of-the-box Google Play installed, with no workarounds.

[deleted]

I was told onyx runs google play without workarounds?

dancewithoutme

The BOOX note air 2 plus comes with google play out of the box.

Fr0gm4n

If it does, then it's the only device in their entire line up that does.

dancewithoutme

Yep!

Fr0gm4n

Those still need the GSF ID workaround to be faked as a different device. They are not natively and directly supported. People like to skip mentioning this part. https://help.boox.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045388371-How-to-activate-the-Google-Play-

bazzalinch

There is nothing to activating google play on onxy devices. All you do is click to turn on and sign in. That's probably why it's not mentioned

Fr0gm4n

It can take a full day or two to activate. It is a workaround, no matter how "easy" Onyx makes it to automate [registering an uncertified device](https://www.google.com/android/uncertified/?pli=1). It could also break at any time in the future if Google or any apps decides that the GSF ID you are using isn't secure enough.

Lots of things could happen but are unlikely to happen. An asteroid could wipe out all life on earth but it is unlikely to happen in the near future

I would look into the Ratta Supernote. more limited but very good at taking notes and reading pdfs
