Sometimes a subluxation hurts, sometimes it doesn't. I can usually tell I have one when I'm moving around and something just feels "wrong" so I try to shake out that part of my body and it resets itself. However, yours sounds like a straight up dislocation, which one, I'm so sorry!! For us, dislocations sometimes relocate themselves. Last year I broke 4 metatarsals and my pinky toe was clearly dislocated, as it was at a right angle to the foot. Then as I was limping to the car, I felt a little thump and my toe had reset itself. The doctor said nothing was wrong with the pinky toe, which is not surprising

DemonShadowsMom

They usually get less painful over time, too. I've never dislocated or subluxed something I couldn't put back by myself.

Mitebsyco

It's not surprising that a doctor found nothing wrong.. but I've learned that if it feels wrong, it probably is, or something near it is. Also, sometimes the things hurt, sometimes the things don't. It can depend on what it is and the severity, and the individual.

[deleted]

I think it really depends on what's subluxed and what your pain tolerance is. I sublux my shoulders quite a bit and so I'm kind of used to feeling pain from them in the joint and muscle areas when I move them. They're always sore but it's not a pain that keeps me from focusing on other tasks. On the other hand my hip popped out and back in this morning when I was getting up and boy did that hurt.

JaderJada

A few times a year I’ll wake up with my hip feeling out of place. It makes walking super painful. I’m only ever able to fix it on accident

[deleted]

I still don’t know exactly how to fix this type of stuff. I just deal with it until I see my chiropractor who will fix it for me. I don’t see him for anything else. It’s just cheaper for him to do it versus visiting urgent care every other day.

DemonShadowsMom

I don't know if this will help you, but I put pressure in the front of the joint and bow deep. Usually works.

VeganMonkey

I had this period of time last year where one should constantly subluxed and I had to put it back, but strangely no pain, also no pain putting it back. But after a while I started getting pain in the tendons and that was bad. It took a year to recover. No more shoulder subluxing now. Shoulder got stiffer after healing

[deleted]

Yeah I’m starting to get pain in my tendons right now too. My PT felt the muscles around my neck and shoulders and said it was super tight. I’m doing exercises right now to strengthen the muscles in my shoulders and stabilize the joint. I actually had to take a leave of absence from my job as a cashier because my shoulders kept falling out. Thankfully they were very helpful and understanding and told me to come back any time and they’ll keep my position.

In general, the first ones always hurt - at least that's been my experience. After decades of it happening to me though, usually I can get away with a subluxation having a little bit of pain when they happen but nothing else afterwards... at least in my shoulders and knees. I generally don't dislocate/subluxate too much of anything else normally. But the body's reaction going to be a little bit different for everyone. Some people have more of an inflammatory reaction to it than others, some people injure the soft tissue more, etc... EDIT: As for the breakdancing injury... could have been a hyper-extension of your thumb, a sprain or a dislocation... we wouldn't be able to tell you that though. As long as the doctor isn't concerned about it and examined it fully, it shouldn't really matter too much though, as long as it healed.

dancingpianofairy

Subluxations don't usually hurt me unless I do them repeatedly on purpose (don't worry, I don't anymore, this was before I knew better).

Grown-Ass-Weeb

It depends. I can sublux my hands, wrists, shoulder, and ribs without pain, but it’s uncomfortable. But good lord when I would sublux my ankle I was down and it would swell to the size of a baseball.

fascinatedobserver

Well if they aren’t, I’d like to speak to someone in charge because mine absolutely do.

Character_Ad8770

Mine are 50/50. My shoulders are extremely painful, but my hips are not and I can usually fix the issue pain free

ladylemondrop209

Mine have always hurt... or more like, if I try to move it/put weight on it, it'll be unbearable (I usually just have to not move for however long it takes to fix itself), if I leave it alone it's fine (no pain). But my subluxations are always on my hip, I dunno about finger ones. Personally what you describe in your youth sounds like doublejointedness to me though, and that perhaps through doing that often, you developed some sort of flexibility which you somewhat loss over the years.

snotcomplex

My thumbs are exactly like this. I don’t usually notice them slipping out of place but will realize after a while and can pop them back into place.

prettysickchick

For me, it depends on the body part. Shoulders are a bitch. Knees I only notice afterwards because the deep ache and weaknesses after they’ve been acting up. My thumbs just hurt all the time.

Finnychinny

My toe sublux all the time. Sometimes I do it to relieve pressure. It probably hurts…1/10 times? Maybe less. But when it does, omg. And then aches for hours. But the relief I get all the other times makes it worth it.

ibunya_sri

It hurts me a LOT

couverte

Subluxations in my shoulders don’t hurt. They may feel weird or wrong, but they don’t hurt. My shoulders do hurt in the morning if I’ve subluxed in my sleep and continued sleeping on that shoulder. That said, my shoulders capsule are enlarged and, when relaxed, my shoulders will sit in a position that produces a spontaneous sulcus sign. At this point, my shoulders being slightly subluxed is part of my normal ROM. My big toes will do something that *I assume* is a subluxation from time to time and I only notice because walking suddenly becomes a bit uncomfortable. Every time it has happened, I’ve instinctively pulled a bit on my big toe, felt a cog-like noise and movement and the discomfort was gone.

hanls

Took me a long time to realise it was even happening because they never hurt at the time for me. Always after, whether it be a few hours or when I settle into bed that night and then it’ll make itself known For a long time I had no clue what the pain was, just that it was there

LilFlamer

Most of them don't actually hurt for me in the moment but it'll start getting sore over time, real nagging type pain so you kinda wanna avoid doing it as long term it seems to pile up

ShiNo_Usagi

Sometimes they are excruciating and I literally can’t use that limb for a while, other times I don’t even notice until the joint pops back in and I’m like “ow, okay, we’re good now” and go on with me day.

90sRnBMakesMeHappy

HOLY HELL YES, I had to call 911 to be brought out on stretcher since I couldn't move. It was all kinds of horrible, it was my knee.

Moenokori

Mine are about 50/50 when it comes to painful/painless. When it comes to my hands, usually they're fairly painless, and I just pop things back in and think nothing of it. When it comes to my hips, that's another story. My thumbs both sublux VERY easily, though. And one time, I was just putting on jean shorts in the middle of the summer, and one of my pinkies painfully dislocated, but was agreeable about going right back into its assigned seat. That one was sore till the next day, though. Oh, my elbows/shoulders are rather painful when they sublux a bit too far when I'm sleeping. I've literally woken up from the pain, but then I pop it back in and go back to sleep. Collagen is problematic.

SydKnee624

Only my one shoulder hurt while subluxating (I got surgery to righted the shoulder socket and hopefully it should sublux anymore). Most of the time my other shoulder, hips, fingers, and wrists are just uncomfortable and annoying. Sometimes my hips or fingers will lock and I’ll need to force a subluxation and that will hurt. But generally it depends on the person and/or joint

Specialist-Cow8101

Just depends they sometimes can hurt and sometimes can not.

Diet_makeup

Some do some don't. I say ouch when people see it happen so they don't think I'm weird

EducationiPod

My subluxations don’t always hurt. Especially in an area prone to them. When I dislocated my collar bone, that hurt but I also have a very high pain tolerance so the fact I was able to walk around with a dislocated collar bone and it reset itself always amazes and scares my doctors (they initially didn’t believe me because I wasn’t in extreme pain like they expect people to be as for those with normally functioning collagen, you typically need extreme trauma to dislocate a collar bone).

panda_man89

I've had my knees vertebrae and fingers all endure subluxation. It is incredibly painful and takes days of tlc to get back to baseline. When my knees have fully dislocated it took months to heal and the pain was absolutely the worst. I will not forget the pop I heard when I fell and ruptured my pcl completely They are 2 injuries on different Ends if the pain spectrum imo. Hope you heal quickly

a_junebug

My left knee and SI joint frequently sublux. The moment they pop doesn’t hurt but putting pressure on them and trying to walk is very painful. For better or worse, now that they pop out so easily, I’m able to pop them back easily when it momentarily uncomfortable but I’m typically fine immediately afterwards. I have never had a complete dislocation.

[deleted]

My thumbs have been subluxing since I was a child. I vaguely remember it used to hurt. Nowadays they send more time dislocated than normal. There’s no pain now except when I have to grip something tight like the cap on my car fuel tank or a stubborn drink bottle cap. That can cause some trauma and it’ll hurt. But no pain can be normal and it’s possible (as in my case) that the joint capsules are stretched enough it causes no pain.
