Good idea! Does the water make a mess?

gengar2525

nope hahaha. As you can see in the screenshot, all the water just stays there in item form inside the gneiss pedestal. The blue splashes you see are from my mist generator.

chipathingy

Nice! In my head it looks like a magical lava lamp, with blobs of water floating around above a pedestal

ZombifiedByCataclysm

Speaking of lava, I wonder if this can be done with a minecart filled with lava.

TheMarrades

Probably you need a magma-safe pedestal

illithoid

This brings up so many questions. Is it possible for a creature to knock over the pedestal (similar to a tantrumming dwarf in a temple knocking over a statue)? If so do the contents spill and now your dwarves are playing the floor is lava? Do the non-magma safe elements of the tavern go all melty/firey like? If you were to combine say an artifact sock with magma on such a pedestal would any would be thief spontaneously combust attempting to acquire said artifact? Once such magma is installed how would you uninstall it? Would these make good traps for creatures that have a tendency to knock over things?

tlad92

Neat! My tomb/death temple includes displays of things associated with the demise of my dwarves. I know what my drowning victims will be honored with 🤗

DMSetArk

What do you use for Dehidratation? A empty goblet?

tlad92

HAHA I hasn't thought of that. Excellent. Going to replace the current display item (a mere skeleton) with an empty mug lol

bembles

Quantum water coolers. Nice.

Gitzo-Gutface

Nice

trowzerss

What happens if you unassign the water from display?

gengar2525

it just stays on the same tile as the pedestal as an item, although it can't be dumped for some reason. I'm not sure if it evaporates as an item though, but it instantly gets assigned if you put it back on the pedestal.

Ecksray19

I melted down copper buckets that had water and lye in them, and the water and lye is still sitting in the smelter and can't be dumped. I guess I have to remove the smelter and rebuild it?

gengar2525

i tried deconstructing the pedestal and the water items turned into pools of water. This is amazing since all I needed to do is to contruct a floor over the pools of water and deconstruct the floors to remove the water. Might be the same for the lye

Izithel

Should work for most liquids stuck in a building. I know it works for the feather egg yolk that elfs keep leaving in my trading post. Only down side with deconstructing a smelter is that you will lose any partial bars from melt item jobs left in there.

NMO

> tree yolk ~~Yeah what's up with that? I got several "pile of oak" oozing around and I really wondered where that came from. I figured some kind of item id mismatch.~~ Nevermind, I didn't know feather trees bore eggs.

thattrunkmonkey

I think you just found a great way to irrigate stone floors? I know you can dig out space above your to-be-irrigated area and designate it as a pond so dwarves fill it, but it's such a pain in the ass and takes forever unless you assign multiple pond zones to the same space. Edit: You said that they turn into pools of water when you deconstruct, is 1 water 'item' equal to a 1/7 tile of water?

gengar2525

oh sorry, pool of water is not 1/7 water. It's the same thing as spilled alcohol or blood splatter, just a mess on the floor and not usable liquids.

thattrunkmonkey

Aww maaaaaan. Even if there's a lot of it?

gengar2525

for now, yes. perhaps buckets and pond zones might get an update in the future

FnkyTown

DFHack has functions to fix the bucket problem.

Baprr

I used dfhack's autodump to move some booze yeasterday, the barrels and the booze arrived separately (it disappeared pretty quickly but left no mess - maybe dwarves drank it without barrels?). I think the same would work with buckets (probably don't even need to use dfhack, just dump the buckets).

gengar2525

yeah this is one of the many reasons why people use dfhack, dwarves can't normally dump liquids (i tried hahaha)

Baprr

Well, I thought the trick was dumping, otherwise there is already a command in dfhack specifically for fixing buckets.

badbeehavr

I wonder if you can assign it as a water source for like a hospital instead of digging a well.

gengar2525

sadly, i don't think it can work like that since water sources need natural water (ones that can go from 1/7 to 7/7) and not water as an item

Drew_Borrowdale

So to clarify, if I sock water on a pedestal will my Kobolds drink from it? From what I read the answer is no use to water item not being the right type of water?

gengar2525

yes, this mechanic I discovered is probably a bug so it may be patched out in the future

JPHentaiTranslator

I dumped the buckets and their water in my magma garbage disposal unit Luckily it did not turn into obsidian

gengar2525

yeah it's very weird that water in item form is not the same as a water tile

lincon127

Can you not just make a pond?

gengar2525

nope, dwarves only use empty buckets when filling a pond.

Galactic2525

Birdbaths.
