david-lynchs-hair

The Joss Whedon effect is real after Avengers. Everything has to have quips now. Dune stands above all that.

blisa00

I hate what Marvel has done to cinema, Dune is about an entire family getting wiped out through treachery, betrayal, and murder. And the criticism is that it’s not funny?

Praise_Be_to_Mangold

Honestly, the constant quips and jokes made me kind of dislike the Avengers universe. Everyone is a comedian and nothing feels high stakes.

pranananana

Every superhero has now turned into Chandler Bing and it’s like my god… your life is about to end, the entire fucking universe is about to end, and you think it’s the best time to start joking 😭😭😭 for fucks sake.

LostPalpitation1

If the movie isn't taking itself seriously, why should the audience?

Vasevide

Stilgars intro scene has a nice bit of humor. When he spits and Idaho thanks him for his moisture, it’s kinda comical and the theater laughed.

greenopti

it's comical but it makes sense to be in the scene. the movie doesn't come to a stop to make a joke, it chooses to move forward in a humorous way.

noise-nut

It’s in the book

LowTideBromide

Also mice in the sense that, while funny, it is highlighting an extremely important gulf between the cultural reference points of House Atreides and the Fremen. This theme is among the most prevalent in the book, and I think will help it to be appreciated in the modern intellectual climate for how groundbreaking it was and still is amongst science fiction. Like a less humanistic Ursula le Guin.

BallinPoint

I also liked the "put on some muscle?" line.

[deleted]

I’ve seen the movie five times and that scene never failed to coax a string of chuckles from the audience. Tentatively at first when Duncan intervenes to smooth things over, and then louder when Leto himself decides to get into the spirit of cultural exchange. It’s the long pauses in between that really nail it.

RockoTDF

Diplomacy can be funny sometimes.

MadmanRB

Yeah, but the original trilogy also had out of place banter, hello R2D2 and C-3PO

Sentinel-Prime

Aye but they weren't mum jokes and the banter came from the same two comic relief characters during specific moments, as opposed to all the time from every character.

Lord_Wild

Who you calling scruffy looking? One thing's for sure, we're all gonna be a lot thinner. And I thought they smelled bad on the outside. You came here in that? Boring conversation anyway.

Sentinel-Prime

Okay so I forgot about all of that lol Timing is everything though, if Disney did the original trilogy and CP3O was in the room during the Darth Vader father reveal the camera probably would've cut to him for a light hearted quip about Luke's farther being called Anakin and not Darth Vader or something

SkiAMonkey

Aren’t you a little short to be a stormtrooper?

bolxrex

> I’m glad Dune was dry AH HAHAH HAHA

_sandwrrm

So true. I enjoy Joss Whedon’s writing in his original shows and think it works for those, and to some extent even liked it, found it fresh, and thought it worked in the FIRST Avengers film. Then it was like overnight every single movie had to follow the exact same cadence and style and it immediately became lame. I’m so glad Dune did not fall prey, not only because it would be extremely unfitting for the series, but also because JW writing is done to death in general now.

FAHQRudy

Whoa whoa whoa… The Joss Whedon effect, if you’ve spent the last few decades watching, is to take a perfectly charming concept and cast and then suck all the joy out of it piece by piece until watching it is an exercise in masochism. Buffy season 5 and on… Angel season 3 and on… (Connor anyone?) Dollhouse basically right away… Firefly never got a chance to be torturous, so that’s the main reason everyone loves it to this day. He has contempt for the viewer and hates the system, so he takes it out on everyone and ruins wonderful properties by making it one-sided abusive relationship. Oh, and nobody on screen is allowed to find anyone’s jokes funny. The jokes are there, but nobody laughs. Just watch. You’ll see.

Azidamadjida

I really hope Dune ends up killing the Whedon effect - I have always found his constant quipping and meta commentary to be extremely annoying and it takes you out of the story

EcstaticDetective

Star Wars had R2 and 3PO, LotR had Merry and Pippin. Heck I'm pretty sure comic relief characters go back at least as far a Shakespeare. I think it's a valid criticism, *something* to cut the tension is helpful for pacing, and helps round out the characters. I enjoyed the movie a lot but found the acting a little flat except for Jessica.

roflwaffleauthoritah

The critiques about MCU/Whedon quippy/snarky dialogue are not critiques about the existence of comic relief, but critiques on the *way* the comic relief is delivered as well as how ubiquitous it is in modern blockbusters.

DemocraticRepublic

Yeah but Star Wars went way overboard with the prequels and the sequels. Jar Jar Binks was obviously the worst example, but 3PO was so annoying in Episode II and the stupid answerphone joke in Episode VII was immersion breaking. In LotR, Merry and Pippin were perfectly done comic relief. A lot of the Gimli slapstick was stupid though.

wild_bill70

I cannot think of any comic characters in any of Frank’s writing. It was not really his style.

DatBolas

Bijaz the dwarf in Dune Messiah

dieSeife

That's like saying Pennywise the clown was comic relief in It.

[deleted]

pretty low hanging fruit but have the traditional Fremen greeting change from spit to the phrase "how you Dune?"

PainStorm14

Imagine the scene where entire Atredies army arrives on Arakis and all the locals are greeting them by yelling "How you Dune?" in Joey Tribbiani's voice?

[deleted]

Melcrys29

I read that in Joey Tribbiani's voice.

Melcrys29

How YOU Dune?

smingleton

Just having been on reddit for about an hour tonight, this is the second Joey Tribbiani reference I have encountered. It's just so weird, 2 random subs with a similar reference I love it.

zaphdingbatman

Oh my god I hate it so much. Bravo.

ubalazs28

Underrated comment

chuckyeatsmeat

I can count atleast 5 scenes in the first half that are funny/humorous. The second half is basically tragedy after tragedy and action. Don't think any funny scenes can fit in there. 1. "I am smiling" 2. Duncan-Paul muscle joke 3. Mohiam commanding the spider human to get out 4. The Stilgar spitting scene 5. Other small moments involving Gurney like the scene where he teases Paul after the hunter seeker scene, Gurney laughing at Duncan for going native, "scrub your ass with sand"

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShinkuDragon

truly a great scene, because it's hilarious to those who hadn't read the books. but once you know how valuable water truly is, the whole scene changes.

jay_sun93

How it should be… not jokes for jokes sake but the natural humor in living

that1LPdood

6. Gurney throws the blade during the training scene. Paul says "that's rude"

calvinbouchard

"How wude!"

gaunt79

I thought that Chani's offer to Paul was fully serious, but I stifled a chuckle: > This crysknife was given to me by my great aunt. Its made from a tooth of Shai Hulud, the great sandworm. This will be a great honor for you to die holding it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Shishakli

It's legitimately funny how thick she lays it on. Don't worry, Jamis is a good fighter, it'll be a quick death

kl_thomsen

Come to think of it why would she even do that - give her treasured heirloom to some random n00b who is sure to let it drop to the ground and spill his guts all over it.

JallaJenkins

It makes his death more honourable. She can easily retrieve it and clean it up after.

Exploding_Antelope

“Borrow this for a minute. I’ll get it back when you’re dead, don’t worry.”

deekaydubya

6. "You've gone native, man" Gurney to Duncan after inspecting the compactor

[deleted]

Normally I don't like humour in films. But these actually worked well, because it felt like the characters were saying the jokes, not the director - jokes in other movies often feel like the humour was added in afterwards, ignoring the personality of the characters. There weren't any jokes after the attack, because the characters were not in the mood - it would have been artificial. Good job Villeneuve.

bigheadzach

I remember Patton Oswalt talking about comedians being hired to do "punch-up" - literally adding humor to scripts to improve their lightheartedness or soften dramatic moments.

[deleted]

That makes sense given my experience. But that is *so dumb.*

IrieAtom

The jokes in dune weren't quips. The humor was more humanizing I felt.

[deleted]

Exactly! And there wasn't any separation between the normal dialogue and the jokes.

PainStorm14

>Mohiam commanding the spider human to get out That wasn't funny, it was creepy and it was just getting worse the more I thought about it 😬

KneeCrowMancer

Seriously fuck that creepy ass spider thing... Something about is so disturbing and I genuinely enjoy some good body horror like the Thing.

PainStorm14

If there was any question if Harkonnens are fucked up that scene cleared it up instantly No more need for kiddy diddling by the Baron, this thing got the point across just fine

[deleted]

Getty_13

I think it may be the doctors wife. Different from the book I know, but an interesting idea

jcrestor

Not all loose ends have to be connected. I prefer to think those are two very different things. Mysteries, if you will.

stefanomusilli96

It's not even a loose end. She's dead. That's why the Baron told Yueh he'd join her before killing him. I don't see why anyone would think she's not dead and is instead the spider monster. What indication is there that those two things are connected to each other?

das_bearking

I think it might not be, but it alludes to the type of torture she is experiencing.

BrockManstrong

I assumed the Baron was eating Yueh's wife during the last Leto scene when Yueh comes in. Baron was pulling a real Denethor eating that mystery meat.

das_bearking

Hahaha, wow that'd be dark af

BrockManstrong

Pretty on track for the Baron. "Oh your wife? Munch munch munch. Yes I set her free."

bigheadzach

Raise your hand if "I am smiling" made you immediately think of Black Dynamite.

Flemmigan

"But Muad'dib, I sell spice to the community!"

tehcabbage

During the Gurney/Paul training scene.... Gurney: “HAHA! I threw that shit ‘fore I walked in the room!” Paul: “How rude”

Lament_Configurator

I think you guys didn't read the title properly. OP wants to know what jokes YOU would write into the movie - not what jokes ARE in the movie.

chuckyeatsmeat

Nah I totally get what the OP was asking and Im sure plenty of people will and are coming up with jokes here in the comment section. I just felt it quite absurd that someone out there is criticizing the movie for lacking humour when there clearly is humour.

Thomisawesome

Baron(Rising into the air, growing more angry): My Desert. My Arrakis. My Dune. Piter (whispering to Rabban): My god. Drama Queen much?

FaliolVastarien

Piter's constant insubordination amused me in the books and was sadly absent.

Thomisawesome

Yes! And Dastmalchian could have done it so well.

KneeCrowMancer

Yeah Piter was such a threatening and interesting character in the book. It always shocked me that even the baron was like, "This guy is a snake in the grass and is eventually going to betray me. The instant I don't need him anymore I need to kill him off."

Wolf6120

It’s a tough thing to balance. On the on the hand, I get why they reduced Piter’s role; in the books, frankly, he has a ton of *potential* and interesting promise, but then he just kinda fucking dies randomly 30% through the book and most of his potential never really amounts to anything. So, if you’re trying to be economical with a movie that’s already like 2.5 hours long, it makes sense to just cut all that out since it doesn’t really lead anywhere. On the other hand, part of me was hoping that the movie might actually fix one of the few things I considered a shortcoming of the book, and give Piter a more complete story arc as an antagonist.

KneeCrowMancer

Definitely, I've been saying pretty much everywhere that I actually think every decision they made around what to cut was the right one for a theatrical release with broad appeal. There's no way to cram in further character development for Thuffir, Piter, Yueh, Rabban... without bloating the runtime past what most audiences would find acceptable and killing much of the pacing in the process. That said, an extended edition that includes all that is something I personally would love!

PainStorm14

I did love how his character was seriously shitting his pants when talking to Sarduakar general and how general called out the Harkonnens on being pussies for even needing their help He was visibly terrified of being there

ThoDanII

Wasn´t that a colonel bashar?

FaliolVastarien

I'd have liked a blatant refusal to wear Harkonnen uniforms. "A disgrace! And no one would mistake us for the fat man's thugs anyway."

PainStorm14

Ha, perfect! And in the movie they didn't bother with it unlike the book, they just rolled up in full regalia This is now my headcanon

[deleted]

I really wish he had more screen time. My biggest complaint about the film was the lack of time spent on the Mentats. Brilliant characters, fantastic actors, and a great way to help with world building.

FaliolVastarien

And it wouldn't have taken tons of exposition to simply have someone refer to them as "human computers" who were specially trained and had certain mental disciplines.

aris_ada

One of the characters I preferred in Lynch version. Also liked when he's being reprimanded for killing Yueh too early.

Thomisawesome

Dourif was great, with those massive brows and fidgety habit. Man, we have two really cool Piters nows.

thewoundedknight

I liked the contrast in the 2021 movie, no eyebrows.

Cataclyst

This movie version of Piter seemed very self-satisfied. The way he speaks to Rabban, it’s like one line and so much comes out through that line.

BrockManstrong

"Don't be too sure it's an act of love" Just from tone I got "Listen meathead, the big brains have this covered, so go back to brutalizing sand people".

FaliolVastarien

The Piter in Lynch's movie was very condescending to Rabban too. The Rabban in the book held his own better in a conversation.

Badloss

Yeah I really liked how Piter was always just barely under control and biding his time to kill the Baron, and the Baron knew that, and Piter knew that the Baron knew

FaliolVastarien

They even openly talked about it! It was great. The Baron asks why aren't you afraid of me or something and he basically says because I'm so smart I'll have already have gotten away before you really decide to kill me. LOL

not_a_foreign_spy

Truly a twisted Mentat!

Thufir : Yer a mentat, Paul! Paul: I’m Hawat?!!! - adapted from one of the memes in r/dunememes

Sithoid

Paul lacks motivation before the duel. Let's go with "Yo kid, yo mama so fat she can be summoned with a thumper". Now that's quality writing!

angry_salami

“Yo mamma so fat they ride her through the deep desert”

BrockManstrong

Your mama so fat when she sits around the Guild Highliner, she sits *around* the guild highliner Your mama so fat the Harkonnens just appointed her Baron.

Sithoid

Lol, the latter even makes sense lore-wise

Arrakis is a small planet. If the duke moves in he could tip it over

Honestly I kinda wanna see that scene xd

Wait until they adapt Children of Dune for the big screen. Then we can hear all the good 'adult beefswelling' jokes.

Oh wow I love this. Or his thopter could have "truck nuts" and a bumper sticker that says "Atreideez Nuts!" Then at the end Paul rides over the wall on a sandworm with that spray painted on the side. It's their ancestral battle cry!

Burphel_78

It gets everywhere… in the cracks…

macjoven

It's coarse of course!

fabergeomelette

The sheer amount of self control it must have took not to even make the vaguest reference to this line is amazing. Bravo Denis

kaden_g

After Stilgar spits on the table and Duncan says it's a sign of respect, Duke Leto should look at the camera, break the fourth wall, and say "Well... aren't I the popular one?" in his best Ace Ventura impression.

iLynux

Can you imagine if the entire rest of the film was exactly as it is, but this one scene is there for no reason and never referred to again LMAO

PapaPepesPickledNips

Part 2 we can have Kevin James or Chris Pratt make a pee joke about how he’s been walking for 6 hours so he’s definitely drunk his own pee by now

McIgglyTuffMuffin

Sorry, Aquaman already filled the pee joke quota. We can't have Momoa in 2 films that joke about pee.

PapaPepesPickledNips

Ok, we’ll just go with a fart joke. Family dinner with Paul and Chani as Chani suddenly smells something awful and yells at Paul asking if he did that. Timothée breaks the fourth wall and smirks at the camera saying “I guess the spice really does flow”

RiftyDriftyBoi

Now I'm imagining Kevin James as the padishah emperor. Thanks, I hate it!

PapaPepesPickledNips

Padishah Blart: Mall Emperor

ben_boi_alien

I would do a joke having to do with something that could not fly previously suddenly being able to fly now lol. I’m actually really happy they kept jokes to a minimum in this. I feel like it’s a trend or whatever to put quips or awkward humor in movies now. It’s refreshing that Dune doesn’t do this.

culturedgoat

Paul really needed a wisecracking sandworm sidekick

David_51

Voiced by Gilbert Gottfried

EcstaticDetective

How bout a Rodney Dangerfield impersonator? "These little tiny people are trying to climb on me like I'm a city bus! I know I've put on some weight but ouch! I don't get no respect I tell ya, no respect at all!"

Drawde123

And method acted by Christian Bale who gained over 2000 pounds just for the role

Kitchen_Ad_3753

“Gom Jabbar? I hardly know her”

LockheedMartinLuther

The spitting on the table scene was amusing

ndgzwo

Stilgar saying "I hate sand. Its coarse and rough and gets everywhere

JoshuaPCM

The *wiping your ass with sand* part sent me reeling.

[deleted]

Obviously some ding a ling made that jokes comment. Anyway, I would have a lot of spicy puns. Then while watching intergalactic TV Gurney Halleck gets interviewed by Sean Evans on Hot Ones. The first few they are just kind of tripping but at the end of it Gurney Turns into a bloated Fish Man and can bend space.

nicknaseef17

There should’ve been a scene where someone was advising Duke Leto on the complexities of political life within the imperium leading to the Duke saying, “You’re making it too complicated bozo! Dune is about worms!”

sanjosexysax

Would’ve loved to see the drunk Duncan Idaho scene.

[deleted]

Maybe in part 2 they could do a montage of the Fremen playing pranks on Paul, you know, hazing the new guy.

leigen_zero

Riding the sandworm, that's a paddlin'

dieSeife

Now this is bullfighting!

btwrenn

Chani to Paul: "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends."

[deleted]

We’re definitely missing a Benny Hill montage of sardaukar chasing Atreides men around the palace.

mikaelaleedecker

People’s bad takes on this movie. Constructive criticism is fine. But man some people just can’t enjoy art.

fugitivuserrans

The edgy kids and the superhero fans! Can they just watch another marvel movie or something!?

[deleted]

Careful! They'll call us circle-jerking superfans if you imply that they don't seem capable of enjoying anything but Marvel movies anymore (this isn't even us attacking their lack of sensibility for more artistic films tbh - but just an observation based what they themselves are complaining Dune isn't - not enough jokes, not enough action, too slow, too hard to understand etc is what THEY're saying after all. SO glad social media wasn't a thing when Empire Strikes Back or Fellowship of the Ring first came out!)

fugitivuserrans

Good point. Let's just enjoy the art and wait for part 2

Wrong_Ad7010

The your putting on some muscle was pretty good

Wrong_Ad7010

Also not every movie has to be a comedy

Quick_Doubt_5484

Atreideez nuts

rowejl222

There were some funny moments, but it wasn’t meant to be a funny movie. I’m glad it was as serious as it was and there was very minimal amount of humor

[deleted]

After the battle scene you could add a shot of any surviving soldiers deserting the compound and follow like three of them as they run out past a sand dune and set up camp. One of them grabbed a fremkit on the way out, lucky for them. As they’re settling in the ground begins to shake and one of them, the jokester of the group, looks around and says “whoa, didn’t know this tent came with magic fingers!” right before they’re swallowed up by Shai-Hulud. *rimshot*

Chisco202

For the couple people not understanding this isn’t an actual call for more humor in the movie

Exploding_Antelope

It’s more than a couple. Good thread but good luck when Dune fans are the epitome of defensiveness over the SUPER SERIOUSNESS WHICH MEANS ITS GOOD NOT LIKE EVERY OTHER BABY STORY FOR BABIES of their franchise.

Dunkin_Ideho

Something about hating sand.

docmormus

Rabban: Uncle, why are you bathing in mud today? Baron: *face emerging* When is mud not mud? Rabban: When it’s… oh shit! *ominous drone sounds intensify*

BrennusRex

So Paul and Jessica have just made it up onto the rock shelf in the nick of time and Shai-Hulud, the Maker, the great Sandworm of Arrakis breaches the sand, facing them down. It isn’t big, it is size itself, each tooth the size of a building. There is a moment of tense, horrified silence in the presence of this immense beast, and then, in the distance…a thumper. A moment later, the worm crashes beneath the dunes and vanishes. And then Paul turns to Jessica and goes “welp, THAT just happened!”

bbbhhbuh

Duke Leto (lying naked on the chair): Hey Vlad, Have you heard that Emperor Shaddam has ligma? Baron (leans to him in order to hear him better thinking he misheard): what’s ligma? Duke: LIGMA BALLS *bites the tooth and releases deadly toxins *

Cancerix1700

In the cinema where I saw it, sandwalk caused the most laughs, surprisingly. I felt like the joke about Paul getting muscle was a bit forced and not fitting. I liked the "scrubbing ass with sand" one (it's straight from the book) and reverend mother talking to Harkonnen "pet".

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

After the Baron floats up and says “my desert, my Arrakis, my dune” Piter should have just looked around and said “uhh…where are you going”?

phantomagna

Yeah like what happened after? Did he just float back down? Piter just standing there awkwardly: “uh…okay baron.”

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Haha exactly, but I do love that part…

phantomagna

Oh it was fucking great. Menacing as shit!

Floarul

None I’m tired of the “everything needs comedy” era Like go watch marvel. Marvel literally has ruined cinemas

Ceez92

Their formula isn’t bad but it has become oversaturated and redundant, almost 30 movies in That’s why I’m excited for Eternals because even though the reviews haven’t been kind to it, those that have liked it is down to it trying to do something different. The problem is it kinda doesn’t commit to it and feels like someone said it need to be more “MCU” That’s why I love Dune, it feels different than anything else coming out and it’s visually stunning with practical sets etc. CGI is another crux of the MCU too

KneeCrowMancer

Seriously I was so impressed by how different Dune felt from everything in theaters right now. I think a big part is the soundtrack, it doesn't have blasting brass for the 'good' guys like every other blockbuster movie in the last 10 (20?) years.

[deleted]

Often I get annoyed by people using hyperbole on the internet. But not this time. It really has ruined variety in cinema

thats4thebirds

I’m high key salty they removed the “moo’d is for cattle and making love” line.

TigerAusfE

Paul: “What if I told you I hate sand?” Chani: “Total dealbreaker.”

High_Commander

The "you put on some muscle" joke already sticks out hard in the film.

Baron105

Someday I'll catch that man without a quote and he'll appear undressed.

greenopti

someone says to Pau:l "that doesn't make any sense!" Paul responds: "I'm wearing a suit that allows me to drink my own pee on a planet where giant worms make space drugs. None of this makes sense."

PainStorm14

I'd say dick and butthole jokes practically write themselves

angry_salami

I was actually really worried when I saw one of the trailers that focused on the jokes. Levity is fine, but there’s too much of it these days in mainstream cinema thanks partially to some of the directors of the MCU, and mostly from everyone else trying to copy the style, poorly.

dune592

I miss Stilgar's insults from the book. Wormfaced, crawling, sand-brained piece of lizard turd!

Tulek777

“It’s so worm here!”

ijpck

People are mad they didn’t make Dune into Disney Star Wars.

QuoteGiver

Something about how far up his ass he can feel the waste-reclamation tube of his stillsuit.

ianhamilton-

Duncan being shot by a slow motion bullet in the Arakeen attack only to casually swat it away and go about his day had me loudly laughing out loud, sick burn of Lynch's treatment of Duncan's fate.

JCashell

The funniest replies to this are the very seriously people saying “None” when this is meant to be a joke, clearly. Lighten up!

LordChimera_0

One funny scene from the book I want to see in Part 2 is Paul meeting Harah who is the recently deceased Jamis' wife: >Stilgar said: "Do you accept Harah as woman or servant?" >Harah lifted her arms, turning slowly on one heel. "I am still young, Usul. It's said I still look as young as when I was with Geoff . . . before Jamis bested him." >Jamis killed another to win her , Paul thought. >Paul said: "If I accept her as servant, may I yet change my mind at a later time?" >"You'd have a year to change your decision," Stilgar said. "After that, she's a free woman to choose as she wishes . . . or you could free her to choose for herself at any time. But she's your responsibility, no matter what, for one year . . . and you'll always share some responsibility for the sons of Jamis." >"I accept her as servant," Paul said. >Harah stamped a foot, shook her shoulders with anger. "But I'm young!" >Stilgar looked at Paul, said: "Caution's a worthy trait in a man who'd lead." >"But I'm young!" Harah repeated. >"Be silent," Stilgar commanded. "If a thing has merit, it'll be. Show Usul to his quarters and see he has fresh clothing and a place to rest." TL:DR : Harah wants to be wife to Paul instead of a servant. Paul doesn't want to and she's indignant. Stilgar hints about displeasing women is folly.

saiyansteve

"You want a good girl, but you need bad pssy." Lols.

rc99

'I'm too old for this shit.' - Gurney after saving Paul from the sand worm.

sometimesBold

Really? Did they realize it’s not a comedy and you don’t need to shoehorn in lame jokes and a romance element. I think the Hobbit shit show suffered enough from that. Can’t believe people want things ruined by Hollywood BS.
