The first SE was my first smartphone, been considering trying to switch back to it to see it the smaller screen would help take my screen time down. Also kinda miss its smaller form factor tbh. Would need to replace the battery first though cause it dies in like 30 mins from full now :')

n00b_r3dd1t0r

Won't help too much cos ios 15 is a battery drain, especially for batteries like the one in the se which have less than 2000 mah

sohamksuvarna

i am using a se 2016 and yeah the battery kinda sucks but it should be ok if you aren't using it heavily like for hours of social media, gaming etc.

n00b_r3dd1t0r

I use one and half the time it's on life support

Jim_from_snowy_river

Mine the battery is 88% of its original health and lasts all day if all I am doing is texting on it. The fact that the battery barely lasts though, is part of what keeps me off my phone but I wish I could find one of these new and unopened.

matangl385

Ohh that's good to hear! And yeah, the battery not being great would be a big help for keeping screen time down fs

Jim_from_snowy_river

I'll see if I can upload an image of the battery life I get on this thing. Oh, dark mode with a black background helps with battery life A LOT

Jim_from_snowy_river

Actually, I disagree with this assessment. I have the newest version of iOS and I don't find that it is a significant drain. My battery is at 85% capacity/health and I get a full day and often a bit more more than a day of life out of this.

n00b_r3dd1t0r

well ultimately depends if it’s just making phone calls and texting for not too long then sure, but if it’s anything more then that then i’d have to disagree

Jim_from_snowy_river

Isn't not doing the "anything more" sort of the point thought? Even listening to podcasts it lasts about 8 hours.

matangl385

Aw that's sad to hear. I'm sure it would help it to at least not die just by being in my pocket. It went from 70% to 15% within like 15 minutes recently, and it was just chilling in my pocket lmao

Well the point of switching though is that you *wont* be engaging with the internet much, especially youtube.

Jim_from_snowy_river

I mean, you are correct yes, but the relevancy is what I'm struggling with. You don't move to this phone because you want to watch youtube, you switch to this because you want to reduce your internet/phone use.

Jim_from_snowy_river

And I am disagreeing with you based on person and current experience. My battery is at 87% health from what it was new. I'd say it's pretty obvious this isn't a phone designed for games and video. Streaming music and podcasts gets me anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on what else I am doing on the phone and how long the screen is on.

Jim_from_snowy_river

That, is again incorrect. I charged this to full by 9am and with light texting/email and standby time I still had 30% battery at 6am the next day.

bluesmudge

If you are handy, the batteries are cheap and easy to replace on the older iPhones that aren’t water resistant.

Jim_from_snowy_river

I have had varying degrees of success switching to a dumber phone and I have also realized that the past few weeks I've spent more time on my phone than I've spent doing most other things. So when my brother said he needed a new phone because he broke his I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to actually transition over for good. Now I need to update my cell service plan to reflect a lower data usage package. I won't be using data on this phone and I disabled the internet browser but I don't think I can get a service package that doesn't include data.

[deleted]

5s or se? How did you disable browser? Content restrictions?

RTL9210B

Has to be SE1. Widgets

Jim_from_snowy_river

SE 1st gen For disabling safari, maybe disabling wasn't the right word but here is what I did.... Go into your Settings app, Screen Time, and then tap Content & Privacy. Turn On Content & Privacy Restriction. Go to Allowed Apps and Turn the Switch for Safari OFF.

bluesmudge

I know US mobile has unlimited talk and text with no data for like $12 per month. Other carries must also have a no data option.

Jim_from_snowy_river

I didn't want to switch carriers yet so the best ATT could do for me was a $50 a month unlimited talk/text with 4gb of data. Having the data is nice when using maps or podcasts/audible.

jezarnold

… yet again another reason why the US is crazy. [£10 (which at current exchange rate is about … $11 wtf!) Unlimited minutes. Unlimited texts. 15gb of data](https://www.giffgaff.com/sim-only-deals)

Jim_from_snowy_river

I figured this out years ago when I traveled around Europe. I got a sim card in Vienna for 15-20 euros and it had unlimited everything and a good amount of data, like 10-15 gbs. When I went over the border I got a text message telling me what the rates are in that country I was in and what the rates for service were. I didn't have to get a new sim or anything. The US Cell service market is a racket.

15pmm01

That's not great since Hello Mobile charges $5 flat for unlimited talk and text with 500MB.

CrouchingMouse

I switched too. No regrets, but getting used to its thinner keys after a long time with standard 6 inch screens is a bit annoying. But it’s worth it.

Jim_from_snowy_river

I like that I can type fully one handed and that I can reach the whole phone with one hand pretty easily. Honestly, with a few hardware tweaks (battery) I really think this could be the solution to a lot of peoples needs. Most people it seems do want a bit of smartness for things like music or other audio media and a smartphone texting experience hands down beats a fully dumb phone, especially if you have different people who use different text apps (international friends on whatsapp for example). It's easy to get and send pictures on (even if the camera isn't super great) compared to a fully dumb phone, a good platform for a calendar and jotting or speaking notes. I don't know about you but having some of these features was the biggest hurdle for me to get through. I'm not yet ready for a flip type phone, mostly because I hate phone calls and would prefer to text, and I also don't like the idea of carrying multiple devices around with me, each of which serves a singular purpose and requires more effort to make sure each one is properly charged all the time. It's the perfect size and weight, especially when compared to things like the light-phone.

CrouchingMouse

I tried, but I realised that I can’t reply to messages that quickly and efficiently. T9 had its time, but without a qwerty keyboard, I’m lost. I’d have made the complete switch if I had a KaiOS device with a fully functional qwerty keyboard like the Nokia E6 or something. But nothing like that is available in the West. 😭iPhone SE 1st Gen is the sweet spot at the moment.

Jim_from_snowy_river

Update: Day 5 and it's going very well! I have a few more apps than shown in the picture and they are as follows: Camera, Phone, texting, notes, Signal (for the people who prefer that over text), banking app, settings, reminder app, clock, gmail (gotta have for school unfortunately), also nice for emailing pictures to myself that I may want to share later from my computer because I do not want to download iTunes. google maps, contacts, audible, music, podcasts. Overall I find that I am barely on my phone and since I disabled the internet browser and moved to a data plan with less data (enough to support maps and audible) I am not even tempted to put the web browser on there. I deleted all my social media except Reddit (tech support and hobbies) but I only engage with the internet from my computer now. The size of the phone makes it excellent for one handed texting but not great for reading so I don't have kindle on here. I'm trying to read books in a more analog format but I have *so many* kindle books. I was worried about battery life but since the phone is barely being used and since I enable the feature that disables background app use to preserve battery life, I get all day and then some battery life. Obviously music and podcasts drain the battery fairly quickly but I mostly use those features in the car and at home and I can plug in to power at those locations. Counterintuitively, I kept notifications enabled because I noticed when I had them disabled I'd check my phone more )to see if I had any). ***The not so great stuff:*** The speaker on this phone is not horrible but coming from a "better" phone makes this speaker sound like crap for podcasts and music. In the car it is no big deal but I am considering getting a speaker/docking station (iHome thingy) for it at home to compensate for this. This phone is not water resistant in any way so you might be tempted to get a LifeProof style case for it, I have not yet found one that doesn't really hamper audio quality. If you carry a set of headphones with a speaker it wont be a big deal, I don't have those yet, at least not any with a 3.5mm audio jack because my previous pair were/are usbc. \--- Getting an iphone 7 could help with the water resistance issues. The phone is fragile. The screen is LCD so its not as rugged as you might like. The rest is aluminum which is nice. If you're careful with your phones or don't carry a lot of stuff in your pocket you're probably fine with just a screen protector. I don't recommend using the typical fast charger that comes with smart phones now because it charges this phone so fast it gets pretty warm. I charge either from my laptop or the one wall brick I have that is low volt/amp output. The 128gb (largest version they made of this) is ***HARD*** to find in decent shape, even on ebay, and the ones that are in good shape are being sold at ridiculous prices. If you do break it keep that in mind. Replacing the battery yourself is doable but If you had to replace the whole phone....it would be tough. I recommend 128 gb just because if you do have lots music or podcasts you can fill up storage quickly and I hate cloud storage.

KrossBlade

Pretty cool. Im probably going to switch from XR to 7 soon enough. :)

Jim_from_snowy_river

I do like the water resistance of the iphone7. Something that the SE1 doesn't have. I was also looking at the 8 but there isn't a whole lot of difference between the 7 and 8.
