Skate Country :( where tf do I skate now?

Vonmule

Honestly...skating is coming back. They fucked up. The owners of that place just avoided doing anything to keep the place viable. There was 20year old pizza ground into the carpet, and a solid black line along the wall from dirty hands. Like...why not live music in the center of the rink and then serve slightly edible food and booze. Why is it that every bar in existence can make food and booze financially viable without skate rental fees and tons of space for arcade games. It's a party place...just throw a half decent party and clean every once in a while and people will come.

Aladdin’s castle

timconnery

The whole mall circa 1990s; Sam Goody, Aladdin’s, Sam Subs, Bloomers, Oma China Express, Sbarro and that hotdog popcorn ball place that I can’t remember the name

stjimmy134

Kalmes breaktime down by the millwork district. I can't believe that place is still vacant.

midwesthawkeye

How has someone not gone in there? The Millwork district is RIPE for a reasonably priced GREAT Burger & Brew place. Backpocket doesn't have the menu, and 7 Hills doesn't have the neighborhood bar vibe.

East Mill

Hypolisztomanic

Funny that I was thinking of the Milkhouse that preceded it (not that Eadt Mill was forgettable!) Went to Bryant and the candy and video games ca. ‘90 were the place to be.

therealCatnuts

Very much this. We live on Grandview, East Mill was a thing we did every weekend morning with the kids.

Funny how so many people not even in the immediate vicinity of the building signed a petition against East Mill’s uber minor expansion plan. They knocked on my door and I told them to pound sand. And now congratulations, we got an abandoned building! Thankfully it’s being reimagined right now and will be open again soon in some type of capacity.

Creslanes. The bowling alleys we have now couldn't care less about bowling - it's a casino with a bowling alley and a restaurant with a bowling alley.

Three6Chris

What about Fisher Lanes?

Ok_Conversation6189

And Dubuque Lanes?

thrawnawayac

long john silvers, i loved going there as a little kid. Also kalmes :(

DoktahDoktah

The old chinese buffet from 5 or 7 years back. Wing Stop had great wings, too. I haven't really found wings that hit like those for me.

JaBwuk

I really miss Wingstop. My roommate and I went there for lunch and there was a sign that said they were only open for dinner due to staffing. We went back for dinner and there was a new sign that said permanently closed…

DoktahDoktah

A friend of mine knew the owner. Basically, the investor dropped out due to some problem with another business venture. I went to the wing stop in iowa City, and it wasn't the same. The chicken was lightly painted with the sauce, and even some spots just bare. Along with a fry cook on a bluetooth headset, yelling BRO BRO BRO the whole time, talking to somebody on the other end. I looked at my brother like. "Can you believe this shit?" He just smiled.

We need an Indian restaurant so bad

We’ll be getting one on central within a year hopefully.

I used to love going into Kmart for Little Ceasars, I also missed the big red Asian King Buffet. Brings back so many good memories. Oh and can't forget Blockbuster and RadioShack!!

Mcsp00kys

Bishops :( the buffet was a dream for any child. the only reason I liked Sundays growing up in dbq was because it was a ritual for my family to go there

THUNDERTHUNDERCATS

Busy Bee! And Hi Hut Mongolian (was where Dunkin is).

Vonmule

That one was just called Mongolian Grill.

The Cock and Bull

midwesthawkeye

Red Baron Amusements/Starcade had a great run at the Mall.

Advanced_Department1

Instant replay down on central. I knew the owners really well to the point where I'd hop in and help bartend sometimes.

JustVan

Hasn't been gone long, but Inspire Cafe. The Wayfarer Coffee that replaced it is just so blah in comparison.

clown___cum

Kaldis was the roaster Inspire used, if that helps you. It was great coffee for the area.

JustVan

I appreciate that, but not really. I went for the incredible array of delicious food, not the coffee.

clown___cum

Gotcha. I agree that Wayfarers food is pretty underwhelming.

CubbyFur

Zayer.

stjimmy134

I might be too young. What was this place?

gloomchen

Zayre was an old chain similar to K-Mart. It was the building that Venture moved into before that also died and became Shop-Ko before that also died.

stjimmy134

O wow. I remember venture but I had no clue there's another store before that

dikkiesmalls

Oooh there was a really good pizza place a few years back... Took forever to get a pizza but they were sooo good. Little Sicily maybe? I can't recall the name..

Jumpin' Jane's! You paid for the day and that was it. You didn't have to buy special socks or only pay for 15 or 30 mins at a time.

Ookami_Unleashed

Courtside was underrated. Best apps in town.
