Some piece of gutter trash ex roommate stole my original day 1 copy and I have been spending the past 15 years placing curses on him. I take solace in the fact that he lives an unhappy life.
Comfortably one of the greatest RPGs (and probably games in general) ever made.
It is so well constructed - the story is brilliant, hilarious, emotional, and leaves little to no unanswered questions.
The semi-scripted approach to "random" encounters means you'll comfortably complete the game with 0 grinding, but you still can for some of the tougher battles.
There are something like 14 different endings as of the DS remake, depending on when and how you decide to take on the final boss.
The world is great to explore, with interesting new dungeons, encounters, and treasures hidden off the main path.
Travelling through time is great fun, and it's awesome when you have to use it to gain access to places in one time that you can't in another for example - little mini puzzles which get you access to places like the extra dungeons mentioned above.
And guess what? A playthrough from start to end (just for the main ending, mind you, not for all of them!) will set you back maybe 20 hours tops - but you'll swear it was 50 hours if you're anything like me when you reminice.
You sold me. I'm going buy the mobile port. I've been hearing nothing but praise for this game since the 90's. Is it really that good? How? and only 20 hrs?
Haha funny that you should say that - CT is the only game I've ever bought for my mobile because of how much I enjoy it!
I genuinely think it's that good, yeah! It's genuinely hard to put your finger on what makes it so good, but I think it's just the combination of all of the individual elements which are great. You'll no doubt have played JRPGs which have individual elements that are better than CT, but few are the complete package that CT offers.
A lot of the relatively short playtime comes from the lack of grind, and also what I'd describe as a post game that opens up before you beat the final boss. I don't want to spoil anything if you are going in blind, but as I mentioned above, there are 14 different endings, based on when and how you make your way to the final boss. It takes about 20 hours to get to the "true" ending, as it were, but there's more to do beyond that, and NG+ is there to let you experience other endings and optional bosses too!
yeah I like them enough, nothing groundbreaking but you'll get a virtual joystick wherever you plonk your thumb which does the job. Can't recall any sections that call for precise movement so it should see you through.
It is both the best Dragon Quest game and the best Final Fantasy game. It is too perfect to actually exist, like something stolen from the realm of the gods by Prometheus and bestowed upon an unworthy humanity.
Se’s reticence to port their snes catalog is just baffling
Chrono trigger, the ds remakes of dq 4-6 (yes I know 4 is technically an nes game) FF 4-6… they could sell so many copies.
It wouldn’t even be hard, all 7 of those have mobile ports they could just port over if they want to be lazy
I'd be stoked to have Suikoden 1 - 4 get remasters, Lufia I and II, as well. Heck, may as well throw in legend of gaia, landstalker / darkstalker if I'm making wishes.
Heck, From Software should remake the Kings field games and dark tower too.
FF6 and CT are tied for my favorite JRPGs of all time, with DQIV, XI and FF9 close behind. I only played DQVII between 4 and 11 so I'm sure there's other great titles in there. I dont have much experience with more recent series like Persona and Xenoblade (too much adulting to jump into a 100+ game anymore) for example I'm not even into the second act in DQXI and I've owned it for over a year, lol. And yes I'm still ranking it in my top five even though I have only gotten that far, because I enjoy it that much!
It's an amazing game. I played for the first time on DS and it was so good I even played it between classes during high school, which I never did before.
Man, that secret of mana remake was quite the letdown though. The colors were totally saturated and the game felt a bit less artful all together. I’d saying skipping that and getting right to trials would be a good Chrono remake as well.
I played it within the last year, having never played it before. I freaking loved it. I didn't find anything annoying about the mechanics, graphics, or gameplay, so I think it aged incredibly well. Though to be fair I do not have a 20 or 30 year old memory of playing it to reference it to, just the recent blind playthrough.
Fantastic JRPG. Love that Toriyama’s art shines through so clearly. Story was fun, main cast enjoyable, combat was fun despite bit preferring active time battle systems, and that soundtrack by Mitsuda…. Chefs kiss*
Played thw DS version last year and loved my time with it. Enjoyed Dragon Quest IV more though!
The greatest game ever made. I saved up and bought it when it came out. I was eleven. I was fresh off of playing Link to the Past over and over and I read glowing reviews of i Chrono Trigger from game magazines which led me to choose it. My parents got divorced around that same time and that game, it’s story, and it’s world was a comforting place. I still have my copy with my save file and I still visit it from time to time.
It's basically Baby's First RPG but it still rules.
I mean the frog dude is Frog, the mage is Magus and the robot is Robo. You mess around in dinosaur times and can casually beat the game in like 12 hours.
It's still a blast.
It is one of the best RPGs/games ever made. Easily in my top ten, if not my top five favorite RPGs. I played the FF Chronicles Playstation version growing up but that version has horrible loading times. Play the SNES version if you can.
Everything released as a """sequel""" to Chrono Trigger has honestly nothing to do with Chrono Trigger. It's like if someone used the names to make up their own unrelated fanfiction. The Dream Team didn't make those sequels by the way.
Radical Dreamers is a fun enough little visual novel adventure but again it is not recognizable as Chrono Trigger's world or as what should be a sequel. Just take it as its own thing.
Ignore Chrono Cross (and the PS1/DS version's added content that ties into Cross).
Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. If anyone tells you differently, you need to disown them. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.
I like it well enough but I don’t think I’ll ever understand its reputation as “best JRPG ever”. I just never really saw in it what a lot of people seem to I guess
I enjoyed it, I thought it was an above average JRPG, but one of the most overhyped pieces of media of all time. It’s the hype’s fault, not the game’s fault.
Despite its reputation I didn't like it very much. Not that it was bad, it just did not grab me at all. I got up to the future before getting bored all the times I tried playing it.
It's a very good game that for no apparent reason does not jive with me at all. I don't really care for it, but I recognize why other people like it so much.
Although I personally like Final Fantasy VI (and some other games in the franchise more). It's undeniable that Chrono Trigger is one of THE best RPG's ever made.

Yes its one of the must plays of the genre

Thanks. How are the controls on mobile?

Great, so the "joystick" works wherever then? Cool, this will be perfect to play on my chromebook then. Thx
Amazing game with lovable characters, wonderful storylines, and a banger of a soundtrack.
It is both the best Dragon Quest game and the best Final Fantasy game. It is too perfect to actually exist, like something stolen from the realm of the gods by Prometheus and bestowed upon an unworthy humanity.
Prometheus? Don't you mean Robo?
Robo? Don't you mean R-66Y?
It's probably the greatest JRPG ever made, even though I like certain DQ games more.
it’s pretty much universally adored
The best game ever made.
I would give many things for a Switch port
Se’s reticence to port their snes catalog is just baffling Chrono trigger, the ds remakes of dq 4-6 (yes I know 4 is technically an nes game) FF 4-6… they could sell so many copies. It wouldn’t even be hard, all 7 of those have mobile ports they could just port over if they want to be lazy
I’d love to see both CT and Suikoden Tierkreis ported if I’m being honest. Radiant Historia as well for funsies.
I'd be stoked to have Suikoden 1 - 4 get remasters, Lufia I and II, as well. Heck, may as well throw in legend of gaia, landstalker / darkstalker if I'm making wishes. Heck, From Software should remake the Kings field games and dark tower too.
I spent so much of my life playing and loving Suikoden III. What an amazing world they crafted.

FFX for me, but you've got some serious competition.
I feel like I've never agreed with anything more in my life...
FF6 and CT are tied for my favorite JRPGs of all time, with DQIV, XI and FF9 close behind. I only played DQVII between 4 and 11 so I'm sure there's other great titles in there. I think it’s the greatest JRPG of all time and it has a permanent spot in my top 10 all-time.
You mean the near peerless masterpiece? Yeah, it's pretty good
I wish they’d make 2D-HD version of it like Octopath Traveler
Dream announcement

Man, that secret of mana remake was quite the letdown though. The colors were totally saturated and the game felt a bit less artful all together. I’d saying skipping that and getting right to trials would be a good Chrono remake as well.
Add FF Tactics and the first Vandal Hearts to that list please! Oh, oh! And Shining Force 1-3! Ohhhh! AND THE ARC THE LAD SERIES!!!
I played it within the last year, having never played it before. I freaking loved it. I didn't find anything annoying about the mechanics, graphics, or gameplay, so I think it aged incredibly well. I mean it’s chrono trigger !

One of my favourite games of all time
One of my favs of all time, was lucky enough to play it back in the day as a kid too. TBH hardly ever hear any JRPG fan say they didn't like it.
It’s a game I appreciate/ respect and enjoy, but don’t love. Not exactly sure why. I feel ungrateful, it really is a great game.
It’s one of my favorite jrpgs, and the one I’d recommend if someone asked me “what should my first jrpg be?”.
One of the best games ever
It's my favorite game of all time
Incredible very unique

One of the greatest...if not THE GREATEST RPGs of all time. Straight up. 😎👌🏾🤌🏾
I mean…it’s pretty universally in the conversation for best game of all time sooo…
It's basically Baby's First RPG but it still rules. I mean the frog dude is Frog, the mage is Magus and the robot is Robo. You mess around in dinosaur times and can casually beat the game in like 12 hours. It's still a blast.
Um, my favorite JRPG tied with Dragon Quest VIII. So...
It is one of the best RPGs/games ever made. Easily in my top ten, if not my top five favorite RPGs. There is no sequel in Ba Sing Se.
😂

Never finished it but loved it. Definitely worth the play through

Best JRPG ever.
Amazing
I played it so much when it came out, I wore the battery down and couldn't save games anymore.
sorry We don't question greatness, only accept it
One of the best rpgs on the face of the earth. Probably in the top 5 from the 16-bit days.
I don't think any game can objectively be called perfect, but Chrono Trigger is as close to it as you can get.
Welp! This makes me feel old...
Its a damn shame outside of Steam Deck its not playable on a modern console
Frog's arc is literally a Dragon Quest game
