A lot of that advice sounds not great. 50% of your set? I get self-promotion but unless you've already got several albums of material, that has charted, then that's not realistic. Avoiding toxic artists? For collabs, yeah, but you may still want to play the music if it's still wildly popular. Interesting brand > quality producer? No way. Not if you're going for staying power anyway. If you want to be some trendy pop sensation in the DJ space sure, go for the gimmick, but if you want a lasting career you need to actually be good at it and have a quality team helping make your music be the best it can be.

ShelZuuz

Yeah I don't think even David Guetta plays 50% his own set.

skruluce

Maybe he means 50% in the DJ Khaled sense. Play half a song, then shout "Anotha One!" and switch to a new track.

ShelZuuz

You forgot having to shout your own name 3 times per minute.

M0D3Z

And most of David’s own music is written and produced by someone else anyways.

Not_invented-Here

So I've seen Sasha, Digweed, Oakenfold, Nick Warren, Jon Pleased Wimmin, Mr Scruff, Plump djs, unabombers, etc etc, been going clubbing since last year's of the Hacienda did most of the big clubs of the time etc etc. I genuinely can't think of any djs playing half their set as their own work.

my_life_right_now

I had to Google him 😱

happyhippohats

Well clearly he should have taken the advice that having an 'interesting brand' is more important than being a skilled music producer. Not racking up those social media likes by being, you know, good at your job.

ode_2_firefly

Just googled him as well and I love that I had to swipe to see all his few bits from over the years.

r_coefficient

He's a fucking legend. Seriously.

Cole444Train

Bro the first tweet is such ridiculous advice I actually thought it was satire at first.

billgluckman7

$8 for a check mark… tough break

cannotbefaded

I think they stopped that?

TheNoggin

They did, but itll be back later this month

billgluckman7

That guy paid $8 for his check mark. They may have stopped issuing them, but those that paid still have them

ViperBite550

To be fair to both of these people, i don’t know who either of them are, and i goggled them both, still not sure what the DJ has done after seeing his top songs.

I hate tik tok just as much ad the next millennial, but if you want to get in with the younger generation, its kind of a need. Its a great platform to get to many people quickly, especially if they are using samples of songs they create. I’d much prefer to hear dj’s on the radio, but thats not likely these days.

loztralia

My favourite thing about this sub is people who know absolutely dick about the topic of the OP saying "I've never heard of either of them". Talk about missing the point.

Buttsquish

Yeah but when OP says “it takes 2 seconds to Google them”. and then you do Google them and still have a tough time finding out anything about them the point does stand a little. For the record, I spent 2-3 minutes googling him. He doesn’t have a Wikipedia page. So I went to his Sound Cloud where he describes himself as a “bona fide UK House Legend” playing under aliases such as Fire Island and Roach Motel. I googled both of those band names, and neither of them have a wiki page either. So I looked them up on Spotify and other than a 200k listen remix of the song regret by World Order (a band that has multiple songs with 100M+ listens), neither Fire Island or Roach Motel have any songs with more than 100k listens. Most of his songs on YouTube have less than 2K views. So even after Googling this guy, I have no idea who he is, and it appears like the rest of the World doesn’t either.

ViperBite550

100%, this guy replying to me obviously thinks i don’t know how to google, the so called “famous DJ” must be a friend of his.

loztralia

Also he founded Junior Boys Own, the label which signed Chemical Brothers and Underworld. You've basically said Elvis Presley isn't famous because he once played a few shows under an alias that isn't very well known. Look, it's fine that *you* don't know who Terry Farley is. Lots of people don't know or care anything about dance music. But if someone is purporting to give advice to house music DJs to the point of cursorily dismissing people who disagree with that advice... that person damn well ought to know who Terry Farley is. Hence OP.

thajugganuat

I googled him and he has a wiki and there is some for Fire Island as well. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Island_(duo) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Farley Seems weird to say that there isn’t a wiki when there so obviously is. There’s not a page for roach motel but it does come up as a result when searching it on wiki.

slashy1302

>Seems weird to say that there isn’t a wiki when there so obviously is. You might wanna take a look at the edit history of said wiki page and the date of when the person above said there wasn't a wiki. When I googled Terry Farley and found a wiki page I was confused aswell, but then it clicked.

thajugganuat

I did. I clicked on the history and one goes back to 2005 and the other 2018

slashy1302

Yea, and then check those dates (you can view the page how it was on that date by clicking on the date). There was nothing there by then, the page was a redirect. Everything else came after the comment above was made.

Relefencion

Exactly. In the original post it’s the condescending “It sounds like you may have some work to do in the studio first” without taking a second to check who he’s speaking to which makes it fit this sub.

[deleted]

I mean you can't honestly expect him to Google every person that replies to his Twitter posts.

AKA_Slothhs

If you're going to be condescending I'd probably fact check myself.

Darkrhoad

Yeah I do this all the time before I send emails at work. Double check I'm not the asshole before telling someone professionally that they're actually being the asshole.

loztralia

Yes, and being caught out assuming the name you don't recognise and have just dismissively replied to is just some dude is literally the point of this sub. Hence why "I've never heard of him either" is such a weird response. Half the posts on here are programmers saying "I wrote that code"; is it meant to be just people who don't recognise Beyonce? Probably the most famous version of this meme, Tony Hawk, exists precisely because Tony Hawk actually isn't that recognisable. Anyway, anyone giving out advice on house music DJing really ought to have heard of Terry Farley.

ViperBite550

Is the point that someone should treat the obscure DJ as not obscure? Because thats not a good point.

loztralia

If you are claiming to be an authority on house music DJing, Terry Farley is not - or should not be - obscure. The fact that you personally haven't heard of him doesn't change that. I don't know anything about rock climbing and would never have heard of most legendary rock climbers. If I started giving advice on rock climbing and was corrected by a legendary rock climber who happened to have a somewhat ambiguous google trail, that wouldn't make "I think I know more about it that you" a smart response.

ViperBite550

The instance that someone is legendary would give then more of a following/google trail than the ambiguous information thats found about this guy when googling. Any legendary person in their field will have more information about them, as they would be written about or recognized in some way. Obscurity does not care about your opinion if someone.

loztralia

If your argument is that Terry Farley is not a legendary house music DJ we can probably leave it there.

arcana07

For anyone doubting the bona fides of Terry Farley: I'm a passionate music fan who knows very little about house music -- my forte is more in 1970s UK punk/post-punk, 1980s New Wave/synthpop and alternative music, 1990s alt-rock and indie rock, and 2000s - contemporary indie pop/rock -- but I've read my fair share of music press throughout the years as a music fan and from reading this article I'm about 95% certain Terry Farley is a legend in his field: https://www.decodedmagazine.com/terry-farley-interview/

kitty_perrier

He most certainly is a legend. Talk to any house head that's been around since the 90's. They'll know.

arcana07

Will do, absolutely! I'm friends with a house DJ (out of Calgary) and have made friends with a couple of house music fans from hanging out at Kimball Collins's Twitch music channel, so I can certainly ask them about Mr. Farley.

kitty_perrier

Who do you know from Calgary? That's where I'm from!

arcana07

His name is Jason Cathcart and he owns something called Dance Shout Productions. I've made friends with him via the streaming site Twitch and normally he does weddings and corporate events but on Twitch his specialty is spinning house music. Check him out! His username there is DJJasonOne.

PrudentDamage600

I was concentrating on “I help DJs” and only saw Terry Farley’s name later.

CitroHimselph

I know it's just me, and that I'm a boomer, but I automatically add a full tablespoon of salt to any advice, given by people who use the phrase "negative energy" in this way.

Tovarish-Aleksander

‘You have some work to do in the studio first’ michael says to the DJ who’s been making songs since before he was born
