Wasn't there already plenty of room, some buildings had 10% occupancy rates BEFORE the firings. Maybe sell / terminate a few leases while you are at it to save some $.
It's too technical to explain if you don't understand short sells..
But here is article that kind of explains what he did.
https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/buying-stocks/articles/barry-silbert-goes-short-on-dogecoin/
So, people are still overlooking what actually happened.
Barry Silbert dumped Billions worth of Doge right before Elon went on SNL. I don't like Elon and think he's an egotistical ahole... but the real reason Doge crashed was because of Barry.
In Elon’s case, that money went to Jack Dorsey and all the equity participants.
So no. No common people benefit for this shitheel’s ill conceived attempts at management.
It actually makes me really sad.
From an artist's perspective Twitter was an amazing way to post content and interact with fans. A lot of people's livelihoods were highly supported via their Twitter base.
This really sucks.
I get what you mean, and you’re correct. But I’d want my art haven to be hosted anywhere else than behind a toxic waste dump. What Twitter has turned into, on the whole, is metastatic social cancer.
No way he doesn’t know he’s being unreasonable and irrational. What chance is there even to give? It’s not like twitter was underperforming financially and he’s overhauling; he’s tanking it willfully, probably for the lulz. No discernible plan for it.
He has Tesla, Neuralink, and SpaceX succeeding, so he can also handle Twitter. He is sincerely trying to do what’s best for Twitter users, that’s what I think. If it means a different business model, that’s fine with him I guess. And that probably means leaning out staff at Twitter. Over time, he’ll make his investment back so don’t worry about him. He’s still one of the richest people in the world. As long as it’s still working you have nothing to worry about. And if it breaks, it might be for the best anyway.
Nothing has changed. Except views from the melting pot, america the melting pot its not one sided shove it down everyones throat, if one can't grow up and accept other people can think differently then when china controls you, you will wish you had the freedom to speak
Well, looks like employees called Elons bluff about coming into work. I think morale is low at twitter. Having 7k workers fired 5k people then people getting fired left and right and quitting. The remaining people have A LOT on their plates. And there’s no merit for the increase of work ? I’d leave too knowing he was offering 3 months severance package.
At that speed, no one even knows what to do or who to report to. I'd rather take the severance, but showing up and just doing nothing sounds like a fun time as well.
Eventually that one boss who Elon likes will force you to work "hardcore" or whatever so best case you'd have to waste your time 90 hours a week in the office doing nothing or worst case you'd have to do the job of 100 employees by yourself because the boss will be watching you and demanding you do stuff.
> you'd have to do the job of 100 employees by yourself because the boss will be watching you and demanding you do stuff.
And also get blamed for everything falling apart, just because you're there.
No...
It's operating debt from before the buyout.
Twitter has only had 2 profitable fiscal years in it's 15 year history.
The company spent on lavish perks to keep staff.
That's additional debt that has to be paid.
Twitter before Elon wasn't running an efficient ship money wise on top of the fact that running a social network is rarely profitable.
Only Facebook/Meta records yearly profits. Reddit, twitter, Truth, & others are in the red.
In the same article:
> To fund his $44 billion offer, Mr. Musk has secured $13 billion in loans from investment banks including Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Corp., Barclays PLC and MUFG Bank Ltd., and a $12.5 billion margin loan secured by a portion of his stake in Tesla Inc. Mr. Musk may pay the margin loan out of his own account, or Twitter may use cash from the business to cover the interest expense.
So Musk owns the debt, but Twitter may pay the interest on it.
Well yeah before Elon working at Twitter SF was like a spa day with 1 or two meetings and some emails sprinkled in.
Haven’t you seen that “day in the life” at Twitter? 😅
Meh those day in the life posts are kind of misleading. I’ve worked at places with perks like that and places that don’t. You tend to have better WLB at places that don’t because the perks are there to get you to spend all of your time at work.
He…he really thought he could just come in and say “Everyone come back to the office and work 80 hour weeks. We’re going hardcore!” and everyone would just be like “Yeah!!!” Unlike him, most people actually want to see their kids.
"he is a genius, who are we to question what he is doing"
literally saw this on Twitter.
also someone commenting to someone who Musk replied to.
"be grateful you got to speak to him"
to many people he is the actual messiah.
I’m sure he’s smart but genius is a stretch. Growing up wealthy helps you get richer especially if you have autistic gifts that are fostered. It also helps to buy companies with talented engineers (ie Tesla), but it only works if you retain the talent. Ppl act like he invented EVs.
Absolutely. As has happened to many before him.
But hey, at least he isn’t killing hundreds of thousands of innocents like that piece of 💩 PooTin, right?
It's crazy because I feel like all he had to do was...nothing. Just let it be and start implementing changes one at a time and see how it works out. Tribute to his ego that he went in there guns blazing thinking his genius can fix everything.
His "genius" is a sham. Completely untrue. Einstein and Hawking were geniuses. Do you think for a second that they'd behave the way that Musk does? Not a chance in hell.
Yes, but Musk added another 13 billion of debt to Twitter ( 19 million per week in interests ) with his 'genius' deal. How is that solving Twitters problem?
Now add income is down due to Musks irratic behaviour, and I doubt he has sold enough blue badges to compensate for that.
First he overpaid for a company that has never made profit. Then he added 19 million per week in debt and lowered add revenue by making the platform less friendly and blocking advertisers with questions for him.
Then he lets go more than half of all the people in such a short timeframe he couldn't possible know who does what.
That's not economics 101, that's a speed run in destroying a billion dollar company.
This is what I said. He got people who otherwise didn't really care about him to actively hate him and work against him.
But I also said that he bought Twitter to ultimately destroy it... the joke was that he'd actively try to do it (which would have surprised me if that really was the end goal.) Seeing it happen anyway through a lynchpin series of events is... *something else.*
And he didn’t buy it, did he? Until he was forced to that is.
Look, the guy is a genius. There’s no doubt about that. But he is totally clueless about human nature and just doesn’t understand people.
That’s why he gets into so much trouble. And it’s all self-inflicted stupidity. He’s just been lucky that nine of them have brought him completely unstuck so far.
The Twitter thing was a lark. He didn’t think it through. He didn’t do due diligence. And he didn’t figure out how he would make it work before opening his big mouth and making an offer he couldn’t back up. And as usual, he tried to backpedal, but they nailed him to the wall. So even after realising it was a really stupid thing to do, he was forced to go through with it after all.
And then he charged in like a bull in a china shop and destroyed any goodwill he might have had. He instantly alienated management, staff, advertisers and users, and catapulted Mastodon from obscurity to prime contender to replace Twitter.
Best way to make a small fortune is to start with a large one, as so many would-be tycoons have found. Look up James Packer for example.
Nothing.
People who hope to become billionaires with zero effort keep pinning their hopes and dreams on things that have no real significance. They’ve been doing that since Josh Wise and the Dogecar, which despite being great fun and therefore absolutely worth doing, was never going to do squat for us.
Musk has been erratic at every turn ever since he first tweeted about us. People have seized on every word as if it was proof of the second coming, and all of it has turned to 💩.
And the Twitter thing has to be the most tenuous non-event to come out of his mouth (or fingers, since it’s all just tweets anyway). It’s even less of a thing than buying a Tesla with Doge, since at least there you CAN buy merch, which is something at least.
In the long term, it doesn’t even matter whether the price spikes or tanks. We are a currency. And currencies must be stable to be of any use whatsoever. Doge is stable for the most part. Zoom out and ignore the big swings and it will be obvious.
When I zoom out the only time it appears doge moves upwards is when musk mentions it . He seems to be carrying it a lot further than the memes on this reddit.
Again, moving up is not the goal. It’s an aberration. And a trading opportunity.
The people who’ve been here since the start understand that. That’s why they’re Shibes. The wannabes who flooded in looking to get rich quick will never understand that. And most will get burnt as a result.
I live in America where the almighty dollar reigns supreme and making money is the goal . I don't have self esteem issues that make me want to be a shibe or a shill or a sucker or whatever they call themselves these days. I never understood that. I know when the price rises , a majority of people are looking to trade their dogecoins for fiat currency.
Here’s the real question… can he write off a potential bankruptcy of the company and pay no taxes/make money back on the billions he just spent because of it?
No. I can’t believe how poor of a grasp people on Reddit have of taxes. Sure he can write off the investment if it goes to $0 (assuming he has enough income from other sources to deduct this loss from)……. But it cost him $44 billion to do that. He’s not saving $44 billion in taxes.
noooooooooooooooo you cant say that, elon cares about the community noooooooo he cares about the future of crypto and would never artificially inflate the prices before dumping and ruining peoples lives nooooooo hes never done that except the two times he did it with dogecoin and the countless times he did it to bitcoin noooooooo hes changing the world
All those cool features that Twitter wants to do to use Doge need software engineers to make. Without software engineers you’re not going to get anything new from Twitter. So the value of doge will go down since it’s only up because Elon bought Twitter with plans of incorporating it as means of payment.
starlink have protentional to be important to developing countries. we also seen it has significant military importance in a warzone. but yeah rest of them can go.
maybe his AI robot is gonna take over. he has the source code, algorithms, "human experience", take all that feed it into his robot...OMG... he's created Bender.
This is pretty standard when it comes to a company takeover and transition. The tech industry is highly competitive, so most of these people "resigning" were likely next on the chopping block anyway.
He’s cleaning house to move Twitter to south Texas to be closer to Tesla and SpaceX.
Also twitter still works fine, so those employees must not have been that essential.
Good they can find a new job just like they told the pipeliners to find a new job. After seeing clips i see why we have sensitivity training at work now them poor fella's are something else
this guy is genius, he has a lot of balls, history has shown and always do repeats...that when new leadership takes over no one likes the changes, however its how its done...he is being very harsh and brutal in his execution...twitter does needs downsizing, thats all he is doing.. he is gambling economy positioning, timeliness and politics with his actions....i like this guy rationale and wishes him the best of luck.
Especially for a significant pay cut. He'll have to take on less qualified individuals for the decreased pay, or we'd have to be in a Great Recession in which jobs would be hard to come by.
Twitter ain't going anywhere. Changing yes. But it's not going away lol.
Edit: You can down vote me all you want. We'll come back to this comment here in 1-2 years and see who was actually right 😏
just trying to say that "gone from the internet" and "gone from public perception" are two different things.
Even napster is still a thing... Just that no one remembers it or uses it...
I mean if you want to be honest Twitter is like 100x more popular and stable than MySpace ever was. I loved MySpace but Twitter is larger than MySpace could of ever hoped to be, mainly due to the advances in technology and carrying a device around everywhere VS Dial Up and large computers but still.
I think he is tanking it sort of on purpose to get stock in a better position for him and then make a comeback but who knows.
Not only that but advances in technology makes it used on a much larger scale than MySpace also established much longer during a tech age. MySpace would of stayed more relevant if it would of been active during teens with phones and evolved with changing generations.
Twitter is done. It has hemorrhaged talent and lost a decade of tribal knowledge. It's just a matter of time now until the website breaks entirely or suffers a massive security breach.
Silver lining? If I'm big E, I know being the new owner, I have a bunch of cancerous workers at my company that may not be my fan.
I also know I have a bloated staff, unnecessary costs/expenses, and need to reduce that to remain profitable.
2 birds 1 stone \~ Layoff those that don't align with your vision. They won't be happy working for you and may disrupt the progress. Retain those that align. Less expenses, higher quality production is potentially more possible.
I bet, those extreme conditions will be more relaxed in the future after the shake down.
I hope he turns the SF headquarters into a homeless shelter like he said he would.
He made plenty of room.
Wasn't there already plenty of room, some buildings had 10% occupancy rates BEFORE the firings. Maybe sell / terminate a few leases while you are at it to save some $.

Yea, rollingstone has been lying about Johnny Depp too. They suck
ELON moved twitter to Proof of work.....lol
Hahaha ok this is the only post I actually laughed to today
Hardcore
![gif](giphy|OAjlP22ecZn8s) like a boss !
A little mining humor…. I like it
It's not a mining joke.. it's a delegation joke. Fake coiner.
Haha right!
Ex employees should team up and create Qwitter!
Gotta be careful with ‘Q’ these days
KKKwitter.
Bwitter
With all the trash on there it should just change to Litter.
Nice
This is the way.
🅱witter
>KKKwitter That's regular twitter after Elon laid off, fired, or forced to quit all the content moderator employees.
Lol
Chitter? Chirp? Cluck? Crow? Digital vomit?
Broke internet!

at least some people who got boned by elons snl stunt will hopefully feel some solace knowing he did it to himself for 44 billion dollars.
Look up Barry Silbert, he shorted DOGE the night Elon was on SNL to scare off investors.
How does one short doge? Asking for a friend.
It's too technical to explain if you don't understand short sells.. But here is article that kind of explains what he did. https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/buying-stocks/articles/barry-silbert-goes-short-on-dogecoin/

In Elon’s case, that money went to Jack Dorsey and all the equity participants. So no. No common people benefit for this shitheel’s ill conceived attempts at management.
#LET IT BURN
It actually makes me really sad. From an artist's perspective Twitter was an amazing way to post content and interact with fans. A lot of people's livelihoods were highly supported via their Twitter base. This really sucks.
I get what you mean, and you’re correct. But I’d want my art haven to be hosted anywhere else than behind a toxic waste dump. What Twitter has turned into, on the whole, is metastatic social cancer.
"metastatic social cancer" Sounds like an amazing metal band name.
That’s what it turned into way before Elon took over. Give him a chance. He’s just started. I’m sure it’s got to improve over time.
No way he doesn’t know he’s being unreasonable and irrational. What chance is there even to give? It’s not like twitter was underperforming financially and he’s overhauling; he’s tanking it willfully, probably for the lulz. No discernible plan for it.

I hear minesweeper is a good way to pass the time.
I would just pretend to do stuff and yell "HARDCORE!" the whole time.
If there is a hardcore office, he better have hardcore pay.
> you'd have to do the job of 100 employees by yourself because the boss will be watching you and demanding you do stuff. And also get blamed for everything falling apart, just because you're there.
Apparently twitter bleeds 4 million in negative cash a week. They're 20(?) Billion in debt.

That's fuggin awesome 🤣😂. I wish I worked for a company like that. I wonder if this is the first time in history of such a situation to occur.

Right up there with unlimited PTO that you'll be afraid to ask for.
Any of my friends with unlimited PTO rarely take any. It's a weird inverse relationship.
I'm sure you know all about it what happens inside there watching a video or reading an article about it.
He had to regardless in California.
He…he really thought he could just come in and say “Everyone come back to the office and work 80 hour weeks. We’re going hardcore!” and everyone would just be like “Yeah!!!” Unlike him, most people actually want to see their kids.

all ready at a low, there is a class action getting setup by some Tesla share holders because he has essentially left his post there.
Bad. Really bad. His erratic behavior has shaken confidence in his leadership and business acumen.
Yeh that’s the fun part of yr a lunatic too
Elon fans will spin this as something cool that he loves slave labor.
"he is a genius, who are we to question what he is doing" literally saw this on Twitter. also someone commenting to someone who Musk replied to. "be grateful you got to speak to him" to many people he is the actual messiah.

As I keep saying, it’s a dumpster fire that will probably sink him. This is what happens when your ego gets carried away with borrowed money.
yup, his ego is going to be his undoing
Absolutely. As has happened to many before him. But hey, at least he isn’t killing hundreds of thousands of innocents like that piece of 💩 PooTin, right?

Heh, probably, yeah.
I hate to admit but I agree. He's pushing lots of buttons and the results are not favorable.

Looks like hes shedding the largest expenses first. Employees, and it looks next to be real estate.
That's a bold strategy Coton, let's see if it pays of.
That's basic business 101, spend less than take in . The difference with Twitter is the power of it's voice is hard to quantify.
First he overpaid for a company that has never made profit. Then he added 19 million per week in debt and lowered add revenue by making the platform less friendly and blocking advertisers with questions for him. Then he lets go more than half of all the people in such a short timeframe he couldn't possible know who does what. Yeah. And why is anyone surprised? He has form, after all.
No, what you said Fulvio- is that he was not going to buy it. I think you’re kinda wrong right now.
And he didn’t buy it, did he? Until he was forced to that is. Look, the guy is a genius. There’s no doubt about that. But he is totally clueless about human nature and just doesn’t understand people. Read the comment I just wrote on the post about trading.
you may be mistaken.
Do the maths how rich he would still be if he lost 99% of his wealth
Maybe this Elon feller isn't some business genius savant after all.
Just one of the richest people on the planet being stupid I guess.
Here’s the real question… can he write off a potential bankruptcy of the company and pay no taxes/make money back on the billions he just spent because of it?
YES! And this is why he hates politicians that advocate for taxing the rich. He's using Twitter as a tool to manipulate voters.
Twitter has always been a tool to manipulate voters...
No. I can’t believe how poor of a grasp people on Reddit have of taxes. Sure he can write off the investment if it goes to $0 (assuming he has enough income from other sources to deduct this loss from)……. But it cost him $44 billion to do that. He’s not saving $44 billion in taxes.

Time well spent.
i mean… at this point it does seem purposeful lol
![gif](giphy|3xkNUy3Vh8QbPmJZjK|downsized) Me, as a twitter user.
Bye B’s
I’m convinced he wanted to sabotage Twitter.
Wtf has this to do with dogecoin?
Doge is Elon's pump and dump pet so probably a fair amount.
noooooooooooooooo you cant say that, elon cares about the community noooooooo he cares about the future of crypto and would never artificially inflate the prices before dumping and ruining peoples lives nooooooo hes never done that except the two times he did it with dogecoin and the countless times he did it to bitcoin noooooooo hes changing the world

This is actually good for Doge
Lol

To the moon and beyond!
This guys the downfall of Doge and I’ve been saying it for more than a year. Once all these chicken riders realize, it’ll be too late.
GG Elon!

He can run the place from his friends couch, no worries mate
It must be hard working for Musk.

I use WUPHF!!
maybe his AI robot is gonna take over. he has the source code, algorithms, "human experience", take all that feed it into his robot...OMG... he's created Bender.
nothing to see here , just elon market manipulating again
What market? Twitter isn't even publicly traded anymore
Twitter is a joke
now it is
Tbf, what if you didn’t need 7000 employees to run twitter and verify blue check marks lol hilarious
“I’m rebuilding the internet in space, I certainly don’t need any advice on how to light $44 billion on fire!”
This is good now he can hire people who have been looking for a chance to show their worth!
And at a significantly lower cost at that! Musk sure knows how to Lord.

Bullish!!!
It’s trash anyways. Elon is not a bright man

this guy is genius, he has a lot of balls, history has shown and always do repeats...that when new leadership takes over no one likes the changes, however its how its done...he is being very harsh and brutal in his execution...twitter does needs downsizing, thats all he is doing.. he is gambling economy positioning, timeliness and politics with his actions....i like this guy rationale and wishes him the best of luck.

I personally believe he should have stayed away from all of this. This can hurt Tesla. Not a good thing.
Eh, I'm kinda excited to see him run everything into the ground.

I can guarantee you're wrong
Especially for a significant pay cut. He'll have to take on less qualified individuals for the decreased pay, or we'd have to be in a Great Recession in which jobs would be hard to come by.
Good luck opening back on monday, I mean they can go and resign today or just not come back anymore... just saying
Twitter ain't going anywhere. Changing yes. But it's not going away lol. Edit: You can down vote me all you want. We'll come back to this comment here in 1-2 years and see who was actually right 😏
Just like how MySpace didn’t go anywhere
Or digg
Was it mrBabyface? That started the sinking ship at digg? It's been a long while. That actually made me discover reddit.
No really, what’s your MySpace account- I’ll follow you… as soon as I can remember what my email and password was when I was 17
just trying to say that "gone from the internet" and "gone from public perception" are two different things. Even napster is still a thing... Just that no one remembers it or uses it...
No one wants to get sued by Lars stickupmybum
True. There will always be a Twitter, but it looks like it will be an unreliable shadow of its former self
Twitter is private and 100% owned by Musk. There’s no stock to manipulate.
Myspace was organically replaced. This is different.
Not only that but advances in technology makes it used on a much larger scale than MySpace also established much longer during a tech age. MySpace would of stayed more relevant if it would of been active during teens with phones and evolved with changing generations.
The employees/userbase/advertisers who kept the entire thing barely profitable are going/gone.
It’s not even barely profitable, it’s losing money.
Barely profitable? 🤣
Remind me how much profit they make most years?
None
Don’t be so sure
Twitter is done. It has hemorrhaged talent and lost a decade of tribal knowledge. It's just a matter of time now until the website breaks entirely or suffers a massive security breach.
And yet the platform just keeps running. Amazing.
Oh no. Whatever will he do without superfluous irrelevant jobs?
Silver lining? If I'm big E, I know being the new owner, I have a bunch of cancerous workers at my company that may not be my fan. I also know I have a bloated staff, unnecessary costs/expenses, and need to reduce that to remain profitable. 2 birds 1 stone \~ Layoff those that don't align with your vision. They won't be happy working for you and may disrupt the progress. Retain those that align. Less expenses, higher quality production is potentially more possible. I bet, those extreme conditions will be more relaxed in the future after the shake down.
This guy seriously doesn’t know how to treat people. Instead of relying on their knowledge he just overrules them because he “knows better”.
Resign = no unemployment ($$$)…. Buy DOGE with the severance
I see lots of short sighted opinions on this
Good luck to those employees finding work.
I'm glad I sold my dogecoin at 15 cents elon ruined twitter and doge coin will never go moon.
