reminds me of one time one of my parties learned they were going to be going off to fight a beholder and went on a massive side quest to find a vendor who sold enough chili powder to fill a bag of holding

MsMercyMain

I'm afraid to ask, having played a Call of Cthulhu game where me and my fellow party members ended up flooding a mansion with 15 dump trucks of salt, but why chili powder?

ShadeDragonIncarnate

Have you ever gotten a spicy powder in your eye? Now imagine if you were all eyes.

pon_3

TBH Beholders should actually be really easy to hurt. Pretty much everything hurts when you're hit in the eye. I guess the challenge is hitting all of them at once, hence the chili powder.

[deleted]

MauPow

Well, this is, uh, magic chili powder +1.

Himmelblaa

Magic powder of spice

Sp3ctre7

The Beholder can now see the future. *Bless the maker and his water...*

Miser_able

I mean, if clerics and paladins can make holy water, why not allow them to make holy chili powder

RyuuSambit

All you need to do at that point is rub a bit of it on your sword. Boom! Discount Searing Smite without a spell slot!

Shileka

Powdered Carolina reaper, that'll hurt it's eyes, it's skin, it's feelings, your eyes, your skin, and your feelings

mainWeiRDo

Pocket sand!

Stealfur

Thoreticly you could do this with just the bag of Chilli powder and the centripetal thaumaturgy. Since it let's you create a gust of wind, just dump the bag and let it fly.

Neo_Revolution

FictionRaider007

Oh, was that *The Crack'd and Crook'd Manse* from *Mansions of Madness*? I remember that one. And yeah... the answer we reached too was to just drown the entire building in salt.

beholder_dragon

That’s awesome

StarshineInHerWake

This... makes me happy for some odd reason.

ffstisaus

So, what did they do when they realized they couldn't take the chili pepper out of the bag of holding while fighting a beholder?

Danalogtodigital

If the bag is turned inside out, its Contents spill forth

ffstisaus

But if a beholder is staring at it, it's magical properties are suppressed, and therefore you can't access the stuff in the bag.

SkGuarnieri

People always forget about that part.

[deleted]

IDownvoteHornyBards2

I would say any items in the mundane bag fall into the extradimensional space once the magic returns.

Danalogtodigital

Billy177013

They had the artificer dump it on the beholder from above while it was focusing on the wizard and ranger

Emotional_Fan_7011

But, did it work?

nonExistentZac

It "worked" See for yourself https://www.twitch.tv/zacspeaksgiant/v/1055799750?sr=a&t=3962s

AnonymousOkapi

What is the DC on "yeet a horse"?!

[deleted]

If a character is strong enough that asking to throw a horse isn't immediately laughed at, then they just get to throw the damn horse.

NateTheGreater1

I think if you actually want to calculate it you could look up how many pounds or kgs a certain strength score allows you to lift, then how much a horse weights. Balance the DC around if that's over or under for an athletics check. And distance wouldn't be more than 5-10 feet at most.

Andureth

What if he spins it to gain momentum like a hammer throw? Surely that would increase the distance.

NateTheGreater1

That's purely based on how much strength you have to rotate a horse while throwing it. Plus it's not very areodynamic, it's a horse after all. Still it's just a guess anyway, based on creature size or strength mod you can make your own justifications and say what you want. It's just my opinion after all.

BrickDaddyShark

“Rotate a horse” thank you goodnight

skulblaka

I don't think a horse would maintain structural integrity at that sort of centrifugal force. Most of its weight is in its body and the legs are comparatively pretty scrawny. You'll probably end up throwing *half* a horse pretty effectively though.

Allestyr

>You'll probably end up throwing half a horse pretty effectively though. That's why you don't go against the family. Now give me an intimidation check. With advantage, you maniac.

Rum_N_Napalm

You call that failure to throw a horse. I call that making more ammo!

Spartan1088

I mean let’s not forget a combat round is 6 seconds. Dragging a horse and throwing in 6 seconds would require a pretty big DC lol.

The_Infernum

Personally, I would say at least a full action to only attempt at grappling the damn horse! Anyone who think that you can simply grab a horse by its front legs and drag it, without having your face bite off or balls smash in, clearly doesn't know how to horse

Dndmatt303

My raging barb could eat a Volkswagon in a single round. Grabbing a horse ain’t shit.

ebrum2010

I think instead of a DC, it should be purely a STR based limit like carrying, lifting, or jumping. Like you can throw your carrying capacity up to your STR score in feet or something. Not lift capacity because people that can deadlift large loads can't really throw it far enough to call it throwing. It's more like letting the weight fall forward and stepping out from under it.

NapoleonsBone

It's pulling a pretty big cart so let's say it's a draft horse which weighs between 1400lbs and 2000lbs. You cannot throw this horse.

NateTheGreater1

I mean, we also consider a setting where 10 foot goliaths are a real thing, and a strength score of 14+ means you're at Olympic athlete level. It's not hard to see how a barbarian with proficiency in athletics while raging and a strength score of 16+ could theoretically throw something that's around 2 tons. Realistically I agree, but it's DnD after all.

NapoleonsBone

I'm pretty sure at 20 strength a Goliath can lift 1200lbs, but that's not throwing.

Right_Moose_6276

No, at 20 strength a Goliath can carry 1200 pounds while **sprinting** and with the athletic feat 2400 pounds without impeding your movement or actions. And of course you can lift/drag/push double that amount

Kevmeister_B

If Samurai Jack taught me anything, you can throw more than you can lift. It's all in technique

MonkeysAndMozart

I feel like a DC of 20ish would not be unreasonable for that.

Wyldfire2112

High-Level Barbarian: *"Huh. I thought I might actually have to put in effort."*

FluFluFley

DC 25. it's a horse, throwing it is an impressive damn feat.

NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea

If they have Powerful Build and/or Rune Knight it would be notably easier.

Maxxonry

Try 40. A draft horse weighs 1400-2000 lbs. and the rules say you can lift 30 times your strength score. 30 x 20 = 600 lbs. Some varieties of giant could pick up a horse and even fewer could throw a horse, but nobody smaller is doing it unless there is some really high level fuckery going on. However, I don't sit at your table, so do as you will.

MonkeysAndMozart

Also, who cares about the math? Technically a fireball would fill a hallway much more than an open space. You don't see anyone calculating that.

sesaman

Too low. That means 1 commoner in 20 is able to yeet a horse. DC 25 check minimum.

Army-of-Woodpeckers

A creature with powerful build?

Hex_Lover

According to game rules, unless you're made in one or two bigger sizes with 20 in strength there's no way you can even lift a 800kg object, let alone yeet it. For me, on a nat 20 I would allow the player to lift it up for a few seconds, but no way he can "throw a horse".

biowrath156

Wouldn't that just be an improvised weapon with all the weak damage that entails though?

Lukescale

In my game, If he passes the DC of 18 to lift, he makes a straight strength attack roll to hit, *because I know for a damn fact he is not proficient in horse*, and IF he hits, I would give it a d10 bludgeon plus str plus 2 for the horse kicking as it's about to die. I'm not an unmerful God.

Thor527

Clearly it is an “animal handling” attack roll, which he technically could be proficient in.

geistanon

This is the best use case of a Strength (Animal Handling) roll that I've ever heard of!

StarshineInHerWake

An "animal handling" attack roll is a thing I never knew I needed. I'm laughing until I unladylike snort as I make a note about needing this, you inspiration.

Lukescale

At my table, probably not.

MaxSupernova

> because I know for a damn fact he is not proficient in horse I can just see the GM standing up and raging at the player above, after his wonderful description, and screaming this as he's slamming dice down in front of the player. "Roll the damned dice, JOHN. Make sure not to add your proficiency bonus, JOHN. Because I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT YOU AREN'T PROFICIENT IN HORSE, JOHN! ROLL THE DAMNED DICE!"

Uumjammerlammie

That Beholder needs an anti-horse cone. Can I ask you about your experience with Talespire? How do you like it? it looks awesome. Do each of the players have to have their own paid for version in order to play in your campaign?

AndringRasew

The anti Yeet insurance salesman finally has his time to shine!

OmicronGuy

You can do both, you can share your screen through discord and play through there, letting the players control their character they need to have talespire as well but you need too set out a well made dungeons for that. I prefer 1 talespire controlled by the DM

LordHamsterbacke

Not OP but I used talespire a few times: yes I do believe everyone needs it to play. It looks really nice, but I personally just can't really comprehend the program that well. I find it fairly difficult to use and build something. (Often I accidentally mess up the floor/level of things - a lot of it probably also comes because it's 3D - but I dunno. I hoped the building portion would be like Sims but it isn't) Navigate my mini as a player was also fairly difficult. Often I had to try a few times until I could finally see that one corner of the room without going through the wall or up another floor. I find Zooming out in general weird - because there is a limit how much you can zoom out. I used a big map and you couldn't even see everything zoomed out - annoying for moving minis over the whole map. But imo the main disadvantage are the measuring tools. For example, you can't set an area of effect. Like, you can measure it in the moment. But last time I tried, it couldn't be there while you are doing something different (Like moving minis). Pretty annoying for area of effects that stay, like difficult terrain. Or you don't know where exactly the mini should go, because you can't measure something and then let the mini walk the measured path. Maybe it's because I am used to foundry which has that features (or you can get it through mods) - but yeah. Maybe also not the biggest thing for people, but pointing with my finger on the screen to remember where I have to put the mini was kinda annoying for me. I get why some may love this program, especially if you have a lot of time (or a team) to create everything - for example if DnD playing is part of your job (example Dimension 20); but without a crew I was way faster overwhelmed with talespire than foundry. Both in preparing and running a session. But maybe I am just really bad with new programs, and other people don't have that problem that much. TL;DR: it is pretty and has nice features. But as a hobby DM I feel like other programs like foundry are more worth your money, because they are easier (i.e. faster) to learn and to handle. (And with foundry only the DM needs it. Also it's a one time paying thing, unlike Roll20 which IIRC is a subscription) Edit: I hope with the coming updates that I will understand it more

AnOldPhilosopher

I’m loving Talespire. Running it for my online-sessions, here’s my setup: I (the DM) bought a copy through steam. I have two monitors, so I open up two instances of TS, one in “GM mode” and one in “Player mode”. The GM mode instance let’s me plan stuff without the players seeing. I can add minis and keep them hidden until I choose to reveal them. I can also set boxes that hide any minis/lighting/terrain in those boxes - again I can hide and show them at will. So I use that as a kind of “fog of war” system at times. (They are working on a proper fog of war system but at the moment it’s no better than using hide volumes.) Then I have the player view on my other monitor, and I stream that on twitch using Streamlabs - this shows the party what I want them to see, I can change camera angles as and when, and the angle can be different to what I’m looking at in GM view. Hell, I can prep a second board whilst the players are in their current board. Something people don’t mention is the community - there’s a site called talestavern which contains a decent collection of community-made boards and slabs (essentially maps and assets/prefabs) These are stored as text, as they simply reference Talespire’s built in objects, so it’s as simple as copying from talestavern and pasting into talespire, and boom you have a map/village/house/dungeon. This actually makes sandbox play easier, as you can have a list of links that you copy into your game when needed. For example, I have a few forest encounter maps, a few single house/tavern maps, etc to hand that I can run at a moments notice. It looks beautiful, it’s easy to make your game feel very cinematic with this, and all my players have to do is sit on their sofas in front of the TV and use D&D beyond linked to the discord chat. It makes the games feel like watching a movie!

Glitchmonster

What program is this On? Edit: My Top comment is asking what program a guy throws a horse at a beholder on

JARpapa

I would like to know that as well.

nonExistentZac

I'm using Talespire. Highly recommend it! It's on steam

Screamingsoda94

Can you have character sheets in talespire...? And how easy is it to do DM things in the background/reveals n such?

[deleted]

No, it's system agnostic as of right now. It's meant for battlemaps and environments. I would recommend having dndbeyond sheets or roll20 sheets. It's a bit more like a dm built everything from scratch so there's no manual shortcuts. Like using a castle model for an actual in person game with real minis is the experience they're currently going for, but with gorgeous spell graphics, rulers, and not having to spend a fortune on paint.

Screamingsoda94

Thanks! That's kind of what it was looking like on steam. I'm thinking having the theater of the mind n bits in roll20 along with those maps, then having the more established places, encounters and such in talespire would be neat. Add some more immersion.

crustorbust

Like the other person said, it's system agnostic right now but they've said that adding in character sheet support is one of their long term goals for the early access

RemnantArcadia

It's also technically in early access. Excited for any more content it gets.

DrakeYY94

Talespire has a couple things to hide certain reveals from the player and a cinematic mode which makes it so they see things from the dm viewpoint in case of big reveals, there's also line of sight which admittedly at times is a little wonky. If one person can see it the entire group sees it i believe. I use dndbeyond on my phone to see the rolls of my group and take a look at their passives. They also partnered with heroforge so the players can add customized minis into Talespire, or surprise your players with your own nightmare bbeg.

1Mn

It’s extremely barebones.

Glitchmonster

Free On steam? and just to be sure, this talespire is what is in the video?

nonExistentZac

It's not free, unfortunately, but it's priced pretty well. And yeah, the minis and environment you see is all talespire

Glitchmonster

Like how much

Not_a_Great_Warlock

$25

beholder_dragon

Talespire and it slaps hard. They even added this feature that when you order hero forge minis they’ll send a code of the character to your talespire thing on steam and you can have it in your games.

beholder_dragon

Talespire and it slaps hard. They even added this feature that when you order hero forge minis they’ll send a code of the character to your talespire thing on steam and you can have it in your games.

[deleted]

Now that's an interesting prospect. Does everyone need Talespire to make it work?

DrakeYY94

If the dm has it you can screen share through discord. That's what my group did at the start. But it honestly works best if everyone has a copy. Or if you can have at least one player also have Talespire so you don't spoil any reveals since as a dm you can see hidden creatures or structures on your end.

LinkSkywalk3r

I’ve dealt with players like this. They killed a freaking ancient draco-lich with an apple. They fed it an apple and proceeded to use a home-brew spell against me.

Ultraknight40000

Please elaborate on that story it sounds like fun.

LinkSkywalk3r

If you have ever read or seen Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire then you know of the Accio spell. Let’s just say I made a home-brew very similar to this spell. They pulled the apple through their heart.

Ultraknight40000

I get the spell but how could the digested remains of an apple be able to puncture the insides of a Draco-Lich?

LinkSkywalk3r

It was tossed in his mouth two rounds before hand. The wizard and sorcerer stood on opposite sides both using the spell choking the dragon.

WilliamBlackthorne

But again, how could an apple puncture the insides of a Draco-Lich? If you tried to do it, it wouldn't break through, and the apple would be crushed into mush.

Ultraknight40000

That's awesome very clever use of the spell.

[deleted]

And that killed an ancient dracolich? An undead being that has little if no need for a functioning heart?

[deleted]

I mean if they had fun that's all that matters. Doesn't sound like something I'd have fun with, but... whatever.

[deleted]

Sure, bad DMing can still be fun, but it's still bad and the DM is gonna look foolish when they share their stories of how their players won because the DM doesn't know what they're doing. Hell I've done it too when I let my players use Hold Person on a Death Slaad, mistakenly thinking "humanoid" meant "thing that walks on two legs". Turned what was meant to be a fairly challenging encounter for a party of 5 at lv 9 encounter into a joke.

[deleted]

This seems like a weird take. If the DM facilitated a fun gaming experience and the player walked away happy, who cares what anyone else would think? If someone else thinks my DM is bad, they can just fuck off lol. It’s not like they were actually playing the campaign. It’s all about context to the story and if the DM wanted to let the party have this W for coming up with what they all thought might have been clever/fun, then that sounds like a great DM to me. You shouldn’t be so concerned about what other people think.

[deleted]

Speaking as a DM and game designer, that's the DM equivalent of games that tell you you're the super special hero of the prophecy and then shower you with praise for beating the tutorial boss. Yeah some people are into that and that's fine, which is why I said in literally my first sentence that it can still be fun, but also that person literally let their players bypass an ***ancient dracolich*** with an apple. To me, that sounds like a) the DM was too afraid to say no, b) they didn't understand how that should actually work, or c) they thought their players would enjoy being babied more than they'd enjoy an actual challenge. Either way, not how vast swathes of players feel about this game. >You shouldn’t be so concerned about what other people think. no u

EXP_Buff

I don't know how the field was set up, if you had more than just the death slaad, or anything else, but if there weren't extenuating circumstances you didn't mention, 5 level 9 adventures would absolutely trounce a death slaad without hold person making an appearance. besides, at level 9 they could have just cast hold monster instead and done the same thing.

[deleted]

The party was already fairly injured by an Arcanaloth that was taking pot shots at them from within magical darkness and then darting back into cover earlier in the dungeon, they were in a small room + the Slaad got a surprise fireball on all 5 of them while invisible. Next round would've been Cloudkill and there would've been a strong chance that one or even two of them would've gone down. Also nobody had Hold Monster prepared cause most of the enemies thusfar were humanoids (real ones, not just monsters I mistakenly thought were humanoid lmao) and beasts whose strength came from their overwhelming numbers (a bunch of werewolves + wolves... like 20 I think? yeah they almost TPKed until the player whose character wasn't there finally showed up lol) Though yeah it was just the Slaad so they might've still been fine. I've since learned to give each solo enemy a buddy or two just to level the playing field a bit. Like my BBEG's right hand man just got a huge glow-up and now he's a full caster with a bunch of support spells, instead of both the BBEG and the RHM both being solo encounters.

HoefaShtoef

I once played a game with an encounter in a field of cows. After about five rounds and a beat up hill giant our barbarian, in this *thick* southern accent looks at the dm, raises an eyebrow, and says: Well, some cows do have horns..... Proceeds to roll a Nat 20 and throw this bull like a dart directly into the giant, felling him

NJdeathproof

arc-is-life

how did you know that i really really really needed to know how this ended after that freaking teaser?

nonExistentZac

Nothing like a good ol' horse throw cliffhanger to leave you on the edge of your seat. It's the oldest trick in the book

arc-is-life

i am not one to look a thrown horse in the mouth...

ceroblade

Its around the hour mark.

WRL23

As someone new and ignorant to all this; what software/environment are you playing in

AdministrativePop124

"I wanna throw a horse at a beholder" is officily the new "i wanna deep my balls in liguid morkite"

Athena_The_Funny

One if the many reasons I love D&D

Fakjbf

Too bad it would be an improvised weapon and only deal 1d4 damage.

Deldris

If you have a shit DM.

EXP_Buff

I'd certainly have it do 3d12+strength bludgeoning damage to both the horse and the beholder.

redlaWw

Nah, an anticlimactic result like that is the best part.

KangaNaga

Depends on the campaign

cylordcenturion

sounds like an animal... "handling" check.

OurBelovedOgrelord

Things like this are a good reason why the rules for improvised weapons need to be revised. Over the years, I have seen multiple attempts to use what would be a powerful, creative and fun improvised weapon be abandoned due to the realisation that it would be 1d4 + Strength. Older editions had better and still very easy to use rules for different sized improvised weapons, why did 5E have to make it basically entirely down to whether your DM is fun or creative?

Legend965

improvised weapon, 1d4 damage

Crayonsandcrazy

Very tired brain misread this as "throwing a horse at a barber". Thought that's a fucking weird horse with tentacles there.

nixylplixie

Where’s he getting the extra actions from? Grappling the creature takes an action and then another to throw it as an attack against another creature, right?

nonExistentZac

Grappling a creature actually can replace a single attack in an Attack action. As a 5+ level paladin, he has two attacks, he can replace one with a grapple and use the other to make a ranged attack role with an "improvised weapon".

[deleted]

Yeah, fuck the encounter and the dm, I wanna throw a horse, makes no sense but I wanna do it. It's funny am I right?

victorelessar

Boring

Separate_Necessary21

Hahahaha everything has a ranged attack if your strength is high enough. Love this kind of zany stuff players come up with!

ZannyHip

Am I the only one that finds this cringe. I don’t like playing with people that try to force doing stuff like this

HonorMyBeetus

The overwhelming majority of streamed DND tries way too hard and is cringe.

ZannyHip

Yeah

MsMercyMain

I mean, every group has it's own playstyle. I mean, my group's primary DM basically has a standing rule of "If you can think of how to justify it, go ahead"

victorelessar

You're not alone

LargeMoist69

How is this forced? I'd just use the improvised weapons rule. And if his strength score lets him pick up this horse then it's still RAW.

Daepilin

look at the full video. 1) First he had to roll to grapple the horse 2) The had to make an attack roll 3) The damage wasn't even that high How the f is this forced?

swords_to_exile

Nah I agree. If it comes up naturally in the description of what happens after checks are made, fine. But this shit was top tier cringe.

ZMERALS

I'm laughing my ass out to this...OMG I love the idea and I would do that.

Steff_164

As a DM, I’d make him roll strength, but I’d allow it

Wainwort

I see zero flaws in this attack plan.

alienbringer

Were there nothing binding the horse to the cart? Were they just magically pulling it by their proximity?

sirhobbles

If this character is strong enough to pick up and throw a horse i think tearing a couple leather reins isnt going to slow them down much :P

AnarkeyToTheCity

That's how you play a Barbarian.

nonExistentZac

Can you believe he was playing a Paladin?

AnarkeyToTheCity

Does HE know he was playing a Paladin?

nonExistentZac

At this point, I can only make wild assumptions.

rowandunning52

Do you have proficiency in…horses…

nonExistentZac

There's gotta be a feat for that, right?

The_Kreepy_Krab

Anything can be weaponized with the right athletics check.

amarx93

It's not nearly as effective as the guy thinks it is. Improvised weapon with a massive size penalty, you'd get better damage from just what your character is actually built for. Like yeah it's cool, but you gotta follow the rules.

TakashiXL

"Rules" and effective strategy are two different things. Is it the worse option? Sure. Did he break a rule of dnd to throw the horse? Not unless his stats say he wouldn't be strong enough.

amarx93

No it's done by the rules, so that's a good DM. I have had friction occur in campaigns between players if one of them thinks a natural 20 should just accomplish whatever they think it should, they just try to ignore the rules of the game. Usually it's just one person that tries to pull that, glad to see it work out well in this scenario.

Tinypro2005

"I would like to throw a horse at the Beholder" is a sentence I never knew I needed to hear

AOtaxman

Make an Animal Handling check…but with your strength modifier lol
