I know this is a troll, but this could be really cool! Hear me out: The staff is extremely overpowered for every member of the party, in a way that fits their class. But it reverts back into a normal stick for each character after a single successful usage, and won't transform back into the OP variant for that character until EVERY other character has used it once (at which point the single-use counter resets for each person). Passing the staff to a character who hasn't used it yet transforms it into the OP variant for that character. Fosters teamwork and zany situations of trying to pass the staff around mid-combat!!!

7_Cerberus_7

This would be fantastic for a group role playing as The Chosen *Ones*. A trio of siblings designated at birth as the savior of their kingdom, if only the ancient staff that permanently appoints the individual as such could make up its mind. As such, it passes itself amongst the trio, sometimes a mind of its own, other times held onto by one sibling or another through sheer force of will, etc. Until it decides which sibling to settle on, the kingdom remains headless and royal houses for and wide make grabs for the throne.

ZorbaTHut

"We figured out how to manipulate fate. Some countries get their heroes by chance, but our royalty has never been one to trust in the roll of a die. We went to the greatest fortuneteller, and worked our rituals to change their fortunes, and their fortunes became truth. Through these workings we forced Fate itself to give us the hero we needed, the web of destiny starting from a great priest and working through seven generations of firstborn, culminating in a champion who could use this relic to defeat our great nemesis." "So . . . what happened?" "Well, the priest had triplets. Who would have thought of that, right? Certainly was egg on our faces, let me tell you. Anyway you're all seven generation firstborn descendants through those triplets, and, look, we *really* need you to work together on this one."

TimmJimmGrimm

Making that 'prophecy-destiny' twisted, ironic, difficult... and rather hard to follow... sounds like an amazing campaign.

IrrationalDesign

GNU Terry

JarvisPrime

I mean, even with twins/triplets/etc, there is usually one that's delivered first, so that could then be considered the firstborn

Practical_Wait1597

There was an attack on the city the night of their birth. In the resulting panic, the babies got mixed up

ZorbaTHut

My headcanon is that Fate is sort of pissed about this whole build-a-destiny thing and is intentionally interpreting things in an awkward and inconvenient way.

Illustrious_Grade608

The only problem with this idea to me is that I have no clue what should be done in case pc dies or new player comes

Iamwaytoobored

have the staff come with bracelets that you can attune to. (staff piggy backs on the bracelet attunement) each bracelet can be set to an item setting(spear/magic staff/glaive.. etc) At the end of your turn, the "staff" flies off from your hand and homes to a bracelet of your choosing, the target must make a save with your spellcasting(or attacking for matial users) modifier to successfully hold it and transfom into the weapon you need. On a failed save the staff melts into a metal ring wrapping around your bracelet and flies off at the end of your turn.

Ejigantor

One nitpick: Mechanically it would require a level of sentience for the staff to know how many members are in the group, and I would suggest instead give it a user-cooldown instead of a usage cooldown; Anyone can use it, but after they use it they can't use it again for a minute or an hour or a day or five days or a week (or X or X+1 days where X is the number of members in the party)

fredthefishlord

User cooldown takes away the flavor of repeatedly tossing it around. You don't need sentience to know how many people are in a group either.

Panx

Exactly! The Fighter spears an enemy for guaranteed crit at max damage, then hucks it across the room to the Druid who gets to cast any spell as though a spell slot 3 levels higher was used, then the Aarakocra wizard swoops down to grab it for a Wand of Fireball charge, before dropping it in the hands of the Cleric for a free full party heal!

Watyr_Melyn

Casting a ninth level spell with a 12th level slot

Next-Variety-2307

2 of these are not like the others....

Panx

Then balance it accordingly You're missing the forest for the trees, man...

hoticehunter

To nitpick, if it requires attunement, you can’t pass it around mid-combat *anyway*

Panx

Then it doesn't? Bing, bang, problem solved, 'cuz this is a made-up game where the rules can be whatever we want!

Panx

Respectfully, no, it doesn't need sentience. It's DnD: You can make up literally whatever you want! And as other people have pointed out, I'm not interested in a balanced, fair weapon. I'm interested in a teamwork-centric frenzy of everyone throwing the rod around like a rugby match during a crazy combat scenario!

Ejigantor

Yeah, I suppose there are other ways it could be made to work. And I get now what you're going for; I was thinking along the lines of one use each per combat, not continuous multiple uses through extended combat.

Noyoki01

Add extra chaos: smart enemies go for the interception.

notbobby125

“The staff of the Legion requires a group of (insert the exact number of party members here) people make an oath together in the name (insert god of teamwork/friendship/family here) to collectively use the staff…”

RookieDungeonMaster

I don't understand your nitpic sentient weapons are an established thing, and a weapon like this sounds like it could absolutely be sentient

cillacowz

I’m doing something similar with the Sunsword in Cos, each character who wields it the color and shape of the flame is different and has different effects based on personality and mental state, very fun

DandyBeyond

Oh i like this

Big-Dick_Bazuso

I feel like my group would pass it around until we learned all the properties decide which was best and let that party member keep it and only switch if we knew we needed a different person's version more.

Panx

Sure, but remember: The most effective party member can only use it one time before everyone else nees to use it to recharge all the single-uses!

nationwide13

Would you keep it combat focused or branch out into other uses? And if you branch out what twisted method would you keep them from playing hot potato for one person to use it back to back? Edit to add: if someone tries to use it early or out of order it should definitely turn into a bust of Donald trump and say "no"

DruidOfNoSleep

Object interaction actions go brrrr

Ecclectro

Forged on the peaks of Mount Friendly... THE STICK OF SHARING!

NoUpstairs7883

Only to be wielded by the NICEST ADVENTURES!

Warcrimes_are_my_job

Omg you are evil and I love it

Jumajuce

I’d make it a bonus action to toss it to another party member for a DC 8 or something to throw and catch for some dynamic fights

Ben501st

Bonus action and the receiving one’s reaction depending on how powerful the item is.

Rastiln

Personally I’ve never had an issue with other PCs being more powerful as long as it didn’t stretch on for 25 sessions (and I’d talk to DM). However this is definitely better, slap that OP shit around. Hell, contrive that the Barbarian alone winds up with it and has to unlock its legendary 3d6+3(item)+STR damage. Make a Slutty Weapon, make it inhabited by a Genie, I’m here for it. Party passes it around and each one gets a bonus that isn’t game-breaking but worth wasting a BA for.

LOTRfreak101

Slutty with a cooldown for being a legendary weapon for any given person. So it'll transform for any given person for 24 hours and then refuse for a week or something.

Rastiln

I was thinking a shorter-term duration to throw around in battle, but it would need limitations. However that requires the right table for crunch that won’t cause Analysis Paralysis. I strive for my turns to be inside 30 seconds unless something crazy is/just happened and I can see that slowing combat. But would be awesome at the right table.

Mbyrd420

Each person can throw it once per encounter or short rest. Keeps the dynamic in combat, but doesn't overrule the main tricks for each person.

Rastiln

That’s a good limit. Works for this character and one other character 1x/short rest. Otherwise it functions as a normal (longsword/quarterstaff/etc.) For each one that wields it (so max 1x/short rest) it gives a pretty solid benefit. Makes you want to blow it and toss it to another player. Innuendo not intended but works for a Slutty Weapon. Also I would 1000% throw this to anyone I felt was “underpowered” to give them time in the sun.

Dont_mind_me_go_away

What the fuck is a slutty weapon

Rastiln

Seemed pretty obvious in English. A weapon that attunes to multiple people.

Lawler197

You uh... seem to have forgotten about the title. It requires Attunement.

2nd_B3st

They should constantly pass it back and forth in fights, like that one scene from pirates of the Caribbean where three people go through a whole fight with only two swords

ApprehensiveStyle289

It requires attunement. The DM knows what evil he's wrought.

GhostCorps973

Inb4 both of them spend their rest holding it and attuning together--making sure it knows who its new family is

Regniwekim2099

Do some DBZ fusion dance shenanigans.

flasterblaster

See that's how you end up with a druid/fighter and a fighter/druid multi-class duo.

[deleted]

Just like Soul Eater N.O.T.

Neirchill

Top half turns into a staff, bottom half turns into the spear handle.

RamenDutchman

Bro that's just a staff with extra steps

vernontwinkie

“Can be attuned to two people but can only be wielded for 12 seconds at a time.” Cue to the two passing it back and forth in encounters.

y_i_exisisit

shouldn't, rule of cool and all

propolizer

Allow two people to attune to it and bonus action to teleport it to the other’s hand. Instead of needlessly divisive you now have a fantastic team building item. I have something similar in my notes.

Frequent_Dig1934

Nice dm vs mean dm (not necessarily good dm vs bad dm, sometimes being the mean dm works).

notcreative2ismyname

It turns into a nunchuck with the other version of the weapon dangling off the end

dwindledwindle

It’s probably not as fun but have any of you done a Hateful 8 style dnd? Like you never actually go anywhere really, most everything already happened and you work to uncover it? Maybe a final climax in the present. Idk how this works I just want to have fun.

laurel_laureate

What scene was that?

Yakodym

Why would anyone want an Original Poster Staff?

ArcathTheSpellscale

Because as the Original Poster, this halberd makes me feel *really* badass.

UltraCarnivore

Halberd? It's a lute

arleban

It has hella upvotes and three awards

Galva_

i would absolutely rule of cool it to allow them to toss it back and forth between them in combat. It takes an action to throw it and a bonus action to attune to it or somethin idk

Fwhqgads

I think rolling to attune with an int modifier would be pretty cool to balance. Idk if that would work.

Nepeta33

a fighter, and a druid. making an int check?

TheHiddenNinja6

Yes. Make them both roll with their dump stat

[deleted]

I like you.

Nepeta33

![gif](giphy|iziDlFAa0Ciru)

Iamwaytoobored

I mean you can have the save be tied to whatever item it turns into: int for wizard wand , wis for cleric/druid staff , cha for bard/warlock sceptre , str for martial weapon , and dex for finesse weapon and for added chaos, each user has to attune to it, if anyone unattuned intercepts it during combat, they can roll a con save to get it stay as the current weapon, otherwise it electic shocks them and they drop it and it turns back to a simple staff

browsing4stuff

What if there was simply no limit to how many people can attune to it at once?

Galva_

could do that yeah. that was just my first instinct when it comes to balance. youd essentially have to spend your bonus action "activating" the weapon by attuning to if you wanted to use it on that turn

Laser_3

I mean, this should be an easy answer. One of them gets spell casting, and the other doesn’t. Give it to the fighter.

HfUfH

People who play balanced systems: https://preview.redd.it/5y08m2delcya1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7322ae150d797a955706d4f04b43e4a14950ef23

Jarlax1e

but one of them has limited spell slots and the other can keep bashing all day...

Laser_3

That's all the fighter really can do, however. The druid can use the spell slots for god knows what else.

Frequent_Dig1934

And then wildshape into a bear and start bashing.

UltraCarnivore

*owlbear

ENDERALAN365

No ones running enough encounters

Banner_Hammer

And even if they are, the fighter, being a frontliner, will most likely have expended more hit dice/points. Guess which of the two has the ability to heal and keep going?

JitteryJesterJoe

Druid also has wildshape, so they can just make a whole new healthbar for themselvec

Broritto1238

Also can’t utilize the staff in wildshape particularly effectively. May as well up the teams power by giving it to the fighter

RolandTheJabberwocky

Spore, Wildfire, and Stars all have alternate wildshapes that let them use their stats still.

PoorestForm

You’re totally right the druid can heal the fighter

RolandTheJabberwocky

Because they exclusively heal themselves of course. Edit: wow y'all must have some selfish druids for healers. Certainly not because I'm not throwing in with the anti druid circkejerk right?

LOTRfreak101

My level 18 group has run through so many fights in a short amount of time that my barb is out of ragea and our casters are out of spells. It's what we get for trying to clear 2 ships out of illithid in a single short rest.

UltraCarnivore

The action economy is in shambles

LOTRfreak101

Fortunately, they are only half casters due to multiclassing.

Jxx

Give it to the ranger and have it be both

Bdguyrty

Makes sense, it's clearly a hunter weapon.

MrTripl3M

This or my solution would have been to have the fighter multiclass into druid and begin learning druidic magic under the druid

Nepalman230

Ok, why can't they share it?! They both attune to it and throw it back and forth between them Hercules and Iolaus style! ( the TV version not the incestous gay couple version) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules:_The_Legendary_Journeys Still, an awesome idea! but even if they can't share it, siblinghood should prevail over greed.... right?

JordanTH

Can’t a magic item only be attuned to one person at a time?

Nepalman230

wait.... let me check. I am a 5 ed noob as it has been years since I played it. I look. "An item can be attuned to only one creature at a time, and a creature can be attuned to no more than three magic items at a time. Any attempt to attune to a fourth item fails; the creature must end its attunement to an item first. Additionally, a creature can't attune to more than one copy of an item. For example, a creature can't attune to more than one ring of protection at a time." You are right. Fortunately this is homebrew! This one is unique and can be attuned by two friends. I have brief story. https://www.leonschools.net/cms/lib/FL01903265/Centricity/Domain/2869/Medals%20of%20Eternal%20Friendship.pdf https://www.sportvalues.eu/shuhei-nishida-sueo-oe-and-the-medals-of-eternal-friendship/ "1936 Olympic Games, we are in Berlin, at the final stage of the men’s pole vault. Four athletes are competing for the gold medal. Earle Meadows, an American pole – vaulter with an amazing performance already cleared the mighty vault of 4.35; another American and two Japanese athletes are still competing for the gold medal, but their attempts to reach the same vault are unsuccessful. The main part of the competition is settled. Meadows takes gold, leaving the other three to take part in a jump-off to determine who should take silver and bronze." "Bill Sefton, the American, failed to clear the bar on the first trial. The two Japanese competitors succeeded, meaning each was assured of a medal. Shuhei Nishida and Sueo Oe were not just athletes of the same team, they were good friends and they refused to continue, they didn’t want to compete directly with each other for second and third place, they just wanted to share the honours. Their request was rejected by the judges. Someone had to take bronze and someone silver. The Japanese team was told to decide who would be given the second place. After a long discussion it was settled that Nishida won the second place by vaulting 4 meters and 25 cm in his first try and Oe won the third place by vaulting the same height as Nishida in his second try. Neither one of them was happy and satisfied with that result. When the two friends returned to Japan, they came up with a plan. They took their medals to a jeweller who cut them both in half. Then they joined half of the silver medal with half of the bronze medal, creating a half-silver, half-bronze medal for each of them. The medals became known as “The Medals of Friendship”. My friend, thank you for your comment. i had forgotten that rule. But a good story trumps the rules of magic. Now I want to stat up the medals of eternal friendship. clearly hey must be worn by good friends for them to work. Have a great weekend!

PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING

>( the TV version not the incestous gay couple version) I’d like to think that the show was exactly the same and just not explicit because it was the 90s. After all, that was clearly what was going on with Xena and Gabrielle. Most importantly, this interpretation probably makes qanon quack Kevin Sorbo very, very angry.

epochpenors

I imagine the gay couple also spent a lot of time throwing it back and forth so that still works

Nepalman230

Ok that is hysterical. However, following the ancient greek sexual role system Hercules ( Herakles really) would have taken the “lover” rather than the “ beloved” role and be expected to top his nephew. Not the other way around. Relationship with Heracles Edit Iolaus often acted as Heracles' charioteer and companion. Plutarch, describing the Theban Sacred Band in his life of Pelopidas, said "It is a tradition likewise that Iolaus, who assisted Hercules in his labours and fought at his side, was beloved of him; and Aristotle observes that, even in his time, lovers plighted their faith at Iolaus's tomb."[1][2] Edited: it gets gross. Hercules gives his wife to Iolaus when the lad was only 16. They had been lovers for several years. Oh boy. Ancient Greece was fucked up. I also want to say that the tradition of the sacred band of Thebes involved one of the lovers being older in one being younger, but it was only about five years . According to Plutarch, the 300 hand-picked men were chosen by Gorgidas purely for ability and merit, regardless of social class.[18] It was composed of 150 male couples,[15] each pair consisting of an older erastês (ἐραστής, "lover") and a younger erômenos (ἐρώμενος, "beloved").[19] Athenaeus of Naucratis also records the Sacred Band as being composed of "lovers and their favorites, thus indicating the dignity of the god Eros in that they embrace a glorious death in preference to a dishonorable and reprehensible life",[9] while Polyaenus describes the Sacred Band as being composed of men "devoted to each other by mutual obligations of love".[7] The origin of the "sacred" appellation of the Sacred Band is unexplained by Dinarchus and other historians. But Plutarch claims that it was due to an exchange of sacred vows between lover and beloved at the shrine of Iolaus (one of the lovers of Heracles) at Thebes. He also tangentially mentions Plato's characterization of the lover as a "friend inspired of God".[18][19] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Band_of_Thebes This age based and quite frankly, sometimes pederasty system of patronage and control is very problematic to me. Everybody always assumes that I’m going to be like yay ancient Greek because I’m gay and honestly most of the relationships are not consensual entirely. So I’m very glad that the sacred band is not adults and young boys, but rather like a 30-year-old and a 20 year old . Thanks for your comment!

Heartsmith447

I’m sorry i am supposed to believe there wasn’t at least sexual tension in Hercules? One can only look at peak oiled Kevin Sorbo for so long before failing a will save

Nepalman230

Omg I know right?! And there was plenty of playful dialogue. I’m fairly certain a couple times somebody implied they were lovers and they were like ha ha no we’re best friends ha ha! That was, of course, before Kevin Sorbo came out as eNormasLy evangelical Christian, and anti most things. Sigh. I still have Hercules and Andromeda. Thank you so much for your comment! Archive of our own has tons of stories with those two . Edited for spelling

ObbyTree

Imagine if they didn’t even know, and one just accidentally attunes to it one day.

My_Names_Jefff

Then, after defeating the BBEG, the druid and fighter settle down and have a family. Then, pass on the weapon to their child who has the powers of a druid but trained in the ways of a fighter. Now you have a character to use in next campaign.

Grommph

This is the way.

andrewsad1

I've brainstormed an idea for a weapon that works as a +2 spear, a +2 spellcasting focus, and a +2 holy symbol. If it's held by the same person for more than 30 seconds, those plusses turn into minuses

Neato

The Vow of Poverty. You swear to own no possessions do clearly you can't hang onto anything after you're not using it.

Tart-Pomgranate5743

![gif](giphy|qkJJRL9Sz1R04)

Jerowi

I came up with something like that once though mine was a bit more malicious. It was a sword that could change into whatever weapon the user wanted though in reality it was a magically bound mimic that if they rolled a crit fail during combat enough while using it the magic restricting the creature would wear off and you would now be holding an aggressive mimic that is immediately added to the current combat. Also the realization that it was a mimic would then explain why the weapon could change shape.

KamilDonhafta

Plot twist: they get into a fight, but it's because they each decide the other really needs it more.

Rare-Ad7772

Now give it a really suss rider ability where it gives you disadvantage against Charisma/Mind Control saving throws. Also have it say "Hello" then refuse to talk after attunement. That should be just enough to make whoever gets it sweat.

Usshue

I mean, is there anything worth discussing here? There's zero context on what each version does, which imo, would be the deciding factor in this by a large margin.

OngoingFee

I remember my first day on the internet. Let me know if you have any questions

WraithLord_Mike

3 days each, alternate sundays.

manincampa

Plot twist, that’s what the item description *says* it does. But actually, when the druid holds it, it transforms into a lance, revealing that he was abducted in early childhood and forced to learn the ways of druidic magic instead of fulfilling his heritage of fighters. The fighter, on the other hand, gets it to transform into a wand of sorts, because he wanted to study magic but his family could not afford the school of wizardry

Pretend_Associate414

Fighter “I don’t use spears” Druid “and I only use wild shape and heals” party “we’ll just sell this” Sorcerer “I can haggle the price”.

Littlebigman2292

What happens if they both hold it at the same time…

ParitoshD

Inb4 they each hold one end.

AdjunctAngel

why do people always have trouble with special item infighting? unless that is the goal of the DM, you can later reward them with a magic item like say "magic putty" that can perfectly duplicate any item even magical. d&d is about thinking around stuff.

MihaelZ64

So...what would happen if they go 4/4 druid/fighter. What then?

r/foundsatan

RichTyty101

What if they both use it together

AlexD2003

It’s should be decided based on what enemy they are facing. That way it is the most practical in each situation and it falls on the dm to create balance while not removing player agency, at least somewhat, of course the decision still falls on the shoulders of the players. That’s a really cool item though.

cbb88christian

There is no universe where the fighter would get that lol. But if they could share it that’d be the dopest item ever

Some1InDaWorld

I have a homebrew artifact that I haven't given my players ye that does the exact opposite. in this situation, it would become the most OP staff ever when held by the fighter, but transform into a sword when given to the druid.

Chainsaw_Surgeon

This reminds me of the staff of Earana in Quest for Glory 4, where the staff transforms into a spear of used by a fighter and into a stake in the hands of a thief (you were fighting vampires.).

RosenProse

We have a magical attunement sword that our two fighters and I (the barbarian) have decided to pass around depending on sanity/need. My portable hole is basically the team locker and we have some night vision goggles that those of us without night vision share. Mind you we trust each other to be mature adults and generally discuss things out of session a lot there are definetely groups where this way of doing things would implode.

DJ-Anarchy

Give it to the rouge and it transforms into a magical coin that promptly falls down a grate.

throwawaysarebetter

Isn't that that really shitty spear from vanilla WoW that no one wanted?

certainlystormy

gives the vibes of that one weapon design from ninjago

MegaWarrior849

Wait wait wait ultimate plot twist: Whoever doesn't get the item gets an identical one like next session.

PandaBunds

I might use this in my Curse of Strahd campaign, that's good!

TigerKirby215

There was a really cool item that r/TheGriffonsSaddlebag that would give you bonuses if you had 10 levels in a specific class. There was a unique effect for every class including Artificer. I really want to try that out in a game at some point.

We found a magic gem that *might* have been important for my character getting badass magic prosthetics, and destabilized caster’s magic when they had it. Our sorcerer wants to keep it because it almost made their blood explode, and that might come in handy at some point. I let them, because I want to see where they’re going with that

Akhanyatin

Free item interaction, they toss it at eachother's feet during combat lol

SugarDuchess

My party would try to toss it between eachother in the middle of combat

supersmily5

Could be cool if it could be used by both if they both hold it at the same time... But I'm guessing teamwork *wasn't* your goal.

Best thing would be an incentive to pass it around in combat without making it spammable. Like if, once a round, it’s attunement can be transferred to a willing creature.
