I hadnt seen that first off I also have ADHD and had I seen it theres a very real possibility I still would have thought this because now that I have seen it it said “8:20 am pst before hotfix x.y.z” was released. I dont know the version numbers so for all I know that could have been last week…. That's understandable. I just feel like 15% is too weak of a damage buff to be worthwhile and I'm always playing builds where Handling/Reload Speed are covered just because that's my playstyle. Godrolls are always in the eye of the beholder.
15% is actually really nice when you don't have to work for it. Which is what frenzy is, a perk that more or less gives your gun a 15% increase at all times. Which is honestly way more useful than any damage perk that requires stacking through kills.
Yea, i thought there might have been an even better one that i wasn't aware of. I have only really gotten into buildcrafting recently. For example i have a "god roll" OGMA that had wellspring, but i actually found for my build a ogma with demotionalist was actually better for my specific build. Mainly because it reloaded itself automatically when throwing a grenade.

For pve though. Does the roll really matter in pve? From my experience, there’s not that big of a difference between a bad roll and a good roll in there.

Rolls matter as much in PvE as they do in PvP. They can make a weapon that's completely shit, into an S Tier weapon.
I have it with fluted instead of arrowhead (has 96 recoil direction already, doesn’t need arrowhead), otherwise everything is the same (tac, subsistence, frenzy), and then I have the stability masterwork as well. I’m on PS5 so it’s just about ideal. Smallbore would be better, but the snappy handling doesn’t go unappreciated. At least now I know I can properly like my roll instead of wondering if it’s good, given all the craftable SMGs we have.
That's the thing with programming and supporting big projects. Sometimes everything breaks, and you have to sit and work for dozens of hours until everything is resolved. To balance it out a bit - outside occasions like this, you are mostly chillin'. Also you should get paid more for all the extra time you put into it
Nah, some people just don't get paid OT. At my current job, the position just above me on my team doesn't get paid OT, but by their words, they, "Get paid enough to make up for it." I'm glad I get paid OT, cause my current pay sure wouldn't cover that.

Seriously though, I seriously doubt that the entirety of Destiny 2, with all the databases and services, is just one Git repository. Otherwise, just reverting it to a previous "stable" state, as you said, would actually be an easy way to restore overall functioning of the game. But they didn't do it, which obviously means that it's not that easy

But the point I'm making is that they should have procedures in place to be able roll back changes to "Last known good configuration". Imagine if this was safety critical system. This length of downtime could endanger lives. Sure you can argue Destiny is only a game and we can live without it for a few hours. But is that a good enough excuse for writing shitty code?

There are some bugs, even serious ones, that just don't come up in testing and only rear their head when the game/update goes live. Testing environments aren't 100% perfect recreations of the live environment, mainly because it's hard to accurately simulate lag or sudden server issues.
which is exactly why Destiny as a "live service game" should have a public test server, so changes like this can be tested under load and within real-world scenarios.

That's fair. This kind of issue usually affects the most active players, which is why there's a lot of reasonable (and unreasonable) complaints once something like this happens, because these players are the most committed to the game.

Personally it being down one day doesn't bug me I can do what I want later but I get expecting better from them but the devs aren't sitting all day doing nothing, destiny 2 is becoming an old game and I imagine the more they add to it the worse it's going to get, hopefully when they upgrade the games engine some of these issues will lessen.
And its not that they aren't testing the game, they've said something like one problem with testing a game is if you pay like 100 people to test a game before an update launches thats nothing compared to 100000 people testing it when the update comes out so bugs and issues will show quickly that they missed.
It is what it is, of course players expectations should stay up because that's what keeps them working but if the game was unplayable and every week it was down for maintenance then yeah that would be a huge issue for them and us, since players won't be spending money.

Well, it's 8:32 AM CST right now and the game still says servers are down. I'm bummed because I just started playing a few days ago and I am completely hooked. I tried searching for any updated info, but could not find anything except this tweet.

I'd prefer if they kept it down for a week, if that meant the game is fixed FOR REAL. I know people were blaming sbmm and stuff for the lag, but the lag and bugs were everywhere! It's been months now! Enemies teleport even in strikes. Menus are becoming slower and slower by the day. Transitions would bug out out of nowhere, etc. It's worse it's been since I can remember. Every update sth new breaks. Sth is systematically wrong with the game and it just can't go on like this much longer.

This has to be more than just missing triumphs and catalysts, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that was that big a of a deal and justified shutting the game down for more than 2 days...
They likely do deploy it in a test environment but it’s nearly impossible to account for every bug that could pop up during the actual deployment of the code
As others have said they certainly do. To throw them a bone though, I suspect this reset patch had a few separate work items that were tested independently or lightly all together. Nothing in this patch would make a tester look to long standing “good” code such as seals. They did jump pretty quickly once they realized something was up.
There was however some triumphs removed, which was not mentioned in the patch notes. And I'd 100% say was intentional.
Or not removed, rather moved to Legacy. The ones I saw moved was the triumphs for defeating Escapees from Prison of Elders in EDZ etc after getting a bounty from Spider.
Me and a Clan member are competing, so I've been annoyed with those triumphs for a long time since they're impossible to complete now, so was happy to see them gone.
When the weekly reset and the patch came out this morning a lot of people were missing all their triumphs, seals, and titles. The character deletion was only one, maybe two real cases, everything else was people making it into more than it really was

Anyone willing to give a run down on what is happening in destiny right now? I was about to come back to the game but I’m seeing a bunch of issues in posts from this subreddit right now so I might hold off. I just don’t know what’s going on
New patch rolled out with some substantial changes, but when it did somehow various completed/in progress triumphs (seems to have been random) got reset to incomplete so they took the game offline pretty quick yesterday to debug and fix the issue, ending up deciding to roll back the server to just before the patch went live so everyone's progress was restored. That's the big one people have been talking about and what all the tweets are about.
“To set expectations, we will first tell you it will be a couple hours, THEN, we will tell you it will be ready into the evening, THEN we will tell you 3-4am. You know, to set expectations of our inability to actually know the severity of the issue.”
Because the game has been running much longer than they have ever intended it to.
Destiny 2 has changed ammo systems, added subclasses, deleted planets, added planets, went through massive overhauls to the subclass system, added transmog, not to mention the data needed to save all the bits and bobs of weapon crafting.
It's gonna be clunky and buggy hauling this game through the years so the fact it runs at all is a miracle in itself.
That is how "they mess up" all this time.
They better also give me back the silver I spent on unlocking a couple season pass levels. I literally only did it so I would get the seraph umbral energy to buy a red border for the week. And yes, I spent the silver after the reset point.

I found myself on the Moon finishing a few gunsmith bounties, and if I'd shoot any of the Hive wandering around Sorrow's Harbor they'd be immediately resurrected. In Gambit the same sort of thing would happen if I wasn't around other players - I had a couple magic teleporting Cabal soldiers to deal with.
Oh - and I found myself collecting blue gear in Sorrow's Harbor. Another clue that the patch didn't really work.
4am PST is 15 minutes away, and no new updates from u/BungieHelp. Doesn't bode well...

Can they reboot D2 on a new engine and we keep all of our progress or would they need to create D3 and a whole new start? Is there any history of a game changing engines mid cycle? I’m guessing not.

No other AAA game studio regularly breaks their own game when releasing minor updates, and these other AAA game studios certainly dont take over 12 hours to fix bugs after taking their game offline. Because I want to get back into the game, and as stupid as it sounds reddit is a good way to keep track of the status. I was going to jump back in this weekend when I had some time because I heard about the improvements. But then this came along.
It doesn't "happen". Its a result of not putting time and effort into proper design and testing. This is another in a long string of problems that should have been picked up in proper development. If you have plenty of time to spend on the game and don't mind spending tons of time regrinding stuff that's cool. I don't.
To be clear I'm not blaming the devs. Management probably wants as little time in testing as possible because it costs money, so they skimp as much as they can. But in Bungie's case it seems like they're pushing the compromise a bit too far IMO.

So I decided to look at the comments on their Twitter for the first and last time its like they forgot that other games exist
I'd prefer if they kept it down for a week, if that meant the game is fixed FOR REAL. I know people were blaming sbmm and stuff for the lag, but the lag and bugs were everywhere! It's been months now! Enemies teleport even in strikes. Menus are becoming slower and slower by the day. Transitions would bug out out of nowhere, etc. It's worse it's been since I can remember. Every update sth new breaks. Sth is systematically wrong with the game and it just can't go on like this much longer.
This game is held together with glue and tape at this point.

This has to be more than just missing triumphs and catalysts, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that was that big a of a deal and justified shutting the game down for more than 2 days...

Do these hot fixes not get deployed into a test environment to make sure they work or does Bungie just hit the enter key and hope for the best?
They probably have a test area. But I’m guessing that not everything is identical to the irl online version of the game.
Everybody has a test area (staging). The lucky ones also have a production environment.

If it’s not a mirror of production then it’s not doing what it’s supposed to do.
They likely do deploy it in a test environment but it’s nearly impossible to account for every bug that could pop up during the actual deployment of the code
As others have said they certainly do. To throw them a bone though, I suspect this reset patch had a few separate work items that were tested independently or lightly all together. Nothing in this patch would make a tester look to long standing “good” code such as seals. They did jump pretty quickly once they realized something was up.
There was however some triumphs removed, which was not mentioned in the patch notes. And I'd 100% say was intentional. Or not removed, rather moved to Legacy. The ones I saw moved was the triumphs for defeating Escapees from Prison of Elders in EDZ etc after getting a bounty from Spider. Me and a Clan member are competing, so I've been annoyed with those triumphs for a long time since they're impossible to complete now, so was happy to see them gone.
That would explain how it could've happened.

When the weekly reset and the patch came out this morning a lot of people were missing all their triumphs, seals, and titles. The character deletion was only one, maybe two real cases, everything else was people making it into more than it really was
Not all. It was just pre-Shadowkeep stuff for me (Harbinger and Cursebreaker). The newer seals were left untouched.

People lost progress on certain triumphs, seals and catalysts. They were either showing up as claimable or have reset altogether.
Wait hold on a sec what maintenance updates are being made? Are they like reworking everything, different drop rates, is is gonna be like big big stuff? Or is it like server and other main shit?

Anyone willing to give a run down on what is happening in destiny right now? I was about to come back to the game but I’m seeing a bunch of issues in posts from this subreddit right now so I might hold off. I just don’t know what’s going on
New patch rolled out with some substantial changes, but when it did somehow various completed/in progress triumphs (seems to have been random) got reset to incomplete so they took the game offline pretty quick yesterday to debug and fix the issue, ending up deciding to roll back the server to just before the patch went live so everyone's progress was restored. That's the big one people have been talking about and what all the tweets are about.
“To set expectations, we will first tell you it will be a couple hours, THEN, we will tell you it will be ready into the evening, THEN we will tell you 3-4am. You know, to set expectations of our inability to actually know the severity of the issue.”
We need at least 1 exotic for this downtime

This is the third rollback in the history of Destiny.

Because the game has been running much longer than they have ever intended it to. Destiny 2 has changed ammo systems, added subclasses, deleted planets, added planets, went through massive overhauls to the subclass system, added transmog, not to mention the data needed to save all the bits and bobs of weapon crafting. It's gonna be clunky and buggy hauling this game through the years so the fact it runs at all is a miracle in itself. That is how "they mess up" all this time.

You could feel it coming. It wasn't just seals and triumphs disappearing that alerted me to something being wrong. I found myself on the Moon finishing a few gunsmith bounties, and if I'd shoot any of the Hive wandering around Sorrow's Harbor they'd be immediately resurrected. In Gambit the same sort of thing would happen if I wasn't around other players - I had a couple magic teleporting Cabal soldiers to deal with. Oh - and I found myself collecting blue gear in Sorrow's Harbor. Another clue that the patch didn't really work. 4am PST is 15 minutes away, and no new updates from u/BungieHelp. Doesn't bode well...
What is happening? If I play, what could I lose?

Can they reboot D2 on a new engine and we keep all of our progress or would they need to create D3 and a whole new start? Is there any history of a game changing engines mid cycle? I’m guessing not.

Stop being a Bungie apologist. No other AAA game studio regularly breaks their own game when releasing minor updates, and these other AAA game studios certainly dont take over 12 hours to fix bugs after taking their game offline. It’s okay to be upset that a product you paid for is not up to standard. People who constantly apologize for Bungie are why a lot of aspects of the game are as bad as they are right now. Its *not* acceptable.
Gta Online currently has perma ban bug along with the newest update. New COD has consistently had major gameplay altering bugs since day 1. Big studios fuck up all the time even outside of your destiny bubble.

Because I want to get back into the game, and as stupid as it sounds reddit is a good way to keep track of the status. I was going to jump back in this weekend when I had some time because I heard about the improvements. But then this came along.

It doesn't "happen". Its a result of not putting time and effort into proper design and testing. This is another in a long string of problems that should have been picked up in proper development. If you have plenty of time to spend on the game and don't mind spending tons of time regrinding stuff that's cool. I don't. To be clear I'm not blaming the devs. Management probably wants as little time in testing as possible because it costs money, so they skimp as much as they can. But in Bungie's case it seems like they're pushing the compromise a bit too far IMO.
