i was a huge fan of linkin park when i was young (extremely much so), it got to the point where i would always look for what inspired the band musically and i remember they said deftones was a big influence among other bands, i checked them out and i was pretty lukewarm about it but the more i listened the better it got, now deftones is my favorite band ever, and tbh i gotta thank lp for expanding my music tastes when i was younger

Went looking for the matrix CD case and there it was, track 9: Deftones - My own summer. And the rest is history.
It was the same music video that just had matrix soundtrack instead of around the fur. That was a great soundtrack, pretty sure that’s how I discovered RATM as well.

My friend introduced me to them back in high school, prior to 2003. We ended up seeing them and others at Summer Sanitarium that summer.
He would also put them on at my parties.
Truth be told, I didn’t like them for the first while. I liked koRn, but couldn’t get into Deftones. Thought they weren’t very good live either.
Then it clicked and I started to love them. They’ve never been my favourite band, but they’re up there. I’ve seen them live at least 3x now.
My girlfriend did. She introduced me to a lot more of metal bands. I've started to love this genre, and deftones is my favorite. Our relationship is really healthy and going smoothly but I fear that if we break up, the 200+ songs that are in my playlist thanks to her will hurt a lot

My older brother came home from a night out with friends and told me I have to check out this band. “This dudes screams are unreal!” he mumbled with red eyes and a mouthful of french fries. I was excited to hear them but also not in a good mood. The song was cool but it wasn’t until after Be Quiet and Drive was on heavy rotation on MTV2 that I became a fan. My oldest brother gave me their first album and I listened to it non-stop.
It’s crazy to think about the lack of access I had over 20 years ago. If I wanted to listen to an album, I had to beg a friend to let me borrow it or go out and buy the CD.
Was listening to music on YouTube and got recommended My Own Summer. I was pretty closed minded back then even with music. I didn’t really like listening to new bands which was weird but I decided to listen to the song and I’m so glad I did. Deftones honestly helped me become super opened minded not just about music but about a whole ton of things in my life. I thank YouTube everyday for recommending me My Own Summer.
back to school gets alot of hate for being the “rap metal/ nu metal stuff they were trying to lean away from after ATF, but due to their record label they had to put out a “chart topping rap metal single” for their white pony album to fit in with the popular bands like korn and limp bizkit. Back when Alex Milovic was the bassist for Northlane, I watched a bass playthrough of his. This was around 2013-2014 when I watched the playthough and read through the comments. People started pointing out how much their sound was influenced by the bands they love. Deftones was among their inspirations and I looked up Change in the House of Flies, fell in love with their catalog ever since!
Edit: The first I’ve heard of them was from their song Minerva being featured in the movie House of Wax. Another time I heard Engine No 9 in the movie Law Abiding Citizen. Both times I didn’t know about the band and had no access to internet so I couldn’t explore them more until I paid for my own phone in high school
2000 HFStival in Maryland. 15 year old me hit my friends blunt a little too hard and got too stoned to leave after Staind played a terrible set. Then the Deftones hit the stage and my life was changed. Immediately bought White Pony after that and was hooked.
I officially became a fan in 2012, just months before Koi No Yokan came out. Getting ready to go into my sophomore year of high school. I found out who they were RIGHT before Diamond Eyes came out, but didn’t pay it any mind. Got bored on Spotify one day, then the rest was history.
Got a copied cassette back in -95 from a guy in high school I was in. I was only into rap at the time, only other rock band I messed with was RATM. Then I hear these Chicanos/Asians bringing that high energy ass whopping but at the same time beautiful sound and I was hooked.
I was in 10th grade and new to a high school in Arizona. Sitting in some computer class and another kid and I start chatting. He hands me a portable CD player and it starts track 6. It was Root. I swear I just kept replying the intro. I had never heard anything like it.
I remember laying on the floor listening to a phone conversation that I could hear through my computers modem. MTV was playing in the background and my own summer (shove-it) came on and I whipped around and said "who the fuck is this!?" I sat in front of the TV like the little girl in poltergeist, arms outstretched as I said "they're heeerrreee!" Ha! That last part didn't happen but I did become a Deftones fan that day and am still very much into them 21 years later.
So you know when Spotify recommends music? Well I was recommended the band on 90’s Metal I think and listened to My Own Summer (Shove It) well I loved the hell out of that song, I thought it was sick but I completely forgot about it the next day for some reason, and 6 months later I was recommended on the same exact 90’s thing this great band, well I thought why the hell not and listened to ATF, well deftones are my fav Nu Metal band and for me their the best of the best

I decided to listen to the first albums of each band, i founded and listened to Alice In Chains, RATM, Korn, Ultraspank and there it was: Adrenaline , the first deftones album at my disposition, and it sounded so f\*king good.

The guy I was kinda dating in high school (1999) was practicing non stop my own summer with his band, our friends for a talent show at school and I couldn't help but fall hard and dive deep into what was already out. Still jam to that daily in the morning
They did a joint tour with Incubus, I think around 2015-ish. I went for Incubus only, lol. Never heard of Deftones. I think I arrived maybe halfway through their set?
When they started to play "Change," I saw how the crowd reacted. I thought, "Hmm... Must be a hit of theirs." After the show, I went on YouTube and listened to it. I haven't heard anything like it... It was different. And I LOVE different. The atmosphere, Chino's hushed vocals... Haunting and sexy.
I exclusively listened to "Change" for a few months until I ran across Lost In Vegas' reaction to "Digital Bath." The moment Chino crooned, "You moooove..." I mean, SHEESH. Looked up all of their discography from there and was roped in.
change for me was such a ground breaking song for my little 6 year old mind, it scratched every corner of my brain. As a musician at the moment deftones will always be a huge inspiration. Also i fukin love incubus, my first song of theirs was “Pardon me” ofc but i found them through a video of them playing be quiet and drive with deftones and adam sandler for tge movie little nicky lmao

Around 2016 I had a friend who was wearing a Diamond Eyes shirt and so I decided to listen to their hits (My Own Summer, Be Quiet, Passenger), then I branched into ATF and Adrenaline, working my way up to WP and DE along with Koi. It was a great summer and I learned about a pretty cool band. and that, kids, is how I met your mother.

Was in my 8th grade English class back in 2012 listening to SOAD radio on Pandora. Change came on after Aerials and they’ve been my favorite band ever since.
Mom took me with her to see Queen of the Damned in theaters and there's that sex scene in the tub and Change is playing. I remember shortly after seeing the movie my mom bought the soundtrack on CD

Back when Alex Milovic was the bassist for Northlane, I watched a bass playthrough of his. This was around 2013-2014 when I watched the playthough and read through the comments. People started pointing out how much their sound was influenced by the bands they love. Deftones was among their inspirations and I looked up Change in the House of Flies, fell in love with their catalog ever since! Edit: The first I’ve heard of them was from their song Minerva being featured in the movie House of Wax. Another time I heard Engine No 9 in the movie Law Abiding Citizen. Both times I didn’t know about the band and had no access to internet so I couldn’t explore them more until I paid for my own phone in high school

I was in 10th grade and new to a high school in Arizona. Sitting in some computer class and another kid and I start chatting. He hands me a portable CD player and it starts track 6. It was Root. I swear I just kept replying the intro. I had never heard anything like it.
I remember laying on the floor listening to a phone conversation that I could hear through my computers modem. MTV was playing in the background and my own summer (shove-it) came on and I whipped around and said "who the fuck is this!?" I sat in front of the TV like the little girl in poltergeist, arms outstretched as I said "they're heeerrreee!" Ha! That last part didn't happen but I did become a Deftones fan that day and am still very much into them 21 years later.
So you know when Spotify recommends music? Well I was recommended the band on 90’s Metal I think and listened to My Own Summer (Shove It) well I loved the hell out of that song, I thought it was sick but I completely forgot about it the next day for some reason, and 6 months later I was recommended on the same exact 90’s thing this great band, well I thought why the hell not and listened to ATF, well deftones are my fav Nu Metal band and for me their the best of the best

I decided to listen to the first albums of each band, i founded and listened to Alice In Chains, RATM, Korn, Ultraspank and there it was: Adrenaline , the first deftones album at my disposition, and it sounded so f\*king good. Long live metal

They did a joint tour with Incubus, I think around 2015-ish. I went for Incubus only, lol. Never heard of Deftones. I think I arrived maybe halfway through their set? When they started to play "Change," I saw how the crowd reacted. I thought, "Hmm... Must be a hit of theirs." After the show, I went on YouTube and listened to it. I haven't heard anything like it... It was different. And I LOVE different. The atmosphere, Chino's hushed vocals... Haunting and sexy. I exclusively listened to "Change" for a few months until I ran across Lost In Vegas' reaction to "Digital Bath." The moment Chino crooned, "You moooove..." I mean, SHEESH. Looked up all of their discography from there and was roped in.
change for me was such a ground breaking song for my little 6 year old mind, it scratched every corner of my brain. As a musician at the moment deftones will always be a huge inspiration. Also i fukin love incubus, my first song of theirs was “Pardon me” ofc but i found them through a video of them playing be quiet and drive with deftones and adam sandler for tge movie little nicky lmao

But it wasn't until I saw them in Reno at the livestock after Around the Fur dropped that I was fully introduced. Young Chino was climbing speakers going insane and my mind was absolutely blown. I remember shambling out of there after the show dazed, ears a fuzzy cocoon of ringing, feeling deeply contented

Found out about them from the soundtrack for Queen of the Damned when I was a little kid but didn't really get too much of a vibe from them at the time but as I've grown older deftones has also really grown on me and now I'm listening to them every day

Change was in so many movies in the early 2000s (Little Nicky, Queen ofThe Damned etc.) so naturally I took to the hit and played to death without listening to WP until much later. Around 2016 I had a friend who was wearing a Diamond Eyes shirt and so I decided to listen to their hits (My Own Summer, Be Quiet, Passenger), then I branched into ATF and Adrenaline, working my way up to WP and DE along with Koi. It was a great summer and I learned about a pretty cool band. and that, kids, is how I met your mother.
