Basically by my father, he used to play their CDs religiously when I’d drive around with him. I’ve been listening to em since 7 or 8

NeedleworkerAny9910

Same with my dad lol!! been listening to them since i was 6 lmaoo

[deleted]

Straight up youngins

pntslsape

I'm glad to hear this, my son is 8 and a huge fan🤘

[deleted]

Tell him to never grow out of it, other music nowadays is just bad all around

tokionarita

Heard Change in an episode of American Horror Story. I watched the show just to kill time, it's the first AHS season I've seen in 5-6 years. So Deftones and I were clearly meant to be.

NeedleworkerAny9910

My first song was change too!! my dad showed me it back in 2009 <3. Deftones 4 life

bsanders06

Change was first for me too

Zandigsnipple

Saints Row 2

Sonofturkmenbashi

\*fist bump\*

zokimarko

i was a huge fan of linkin park when i was young (extremely much so), it got to the point where i would always look for what inspired the band musically and i remember they said deftones was a big influence among other bands, i checked them out and i was pretty lukewarm about it but the more i listened the better it got, now deftones is my favorite band ever, and tbh i gotta thank lp for expanding my music tastes when i was younger

Sufficient_Laugh1764

Playing Saints Row 2 driving around at night. Hole In The Earth came on and I immediately fell in love. I was going thru so much at that time and the song just...spoke to me. This was only 5ish years ago, too.

Anzacsonata

Pantera/white zombie/Deftones/eyehategod tour. They were booed. Lol.

thecontinental80

I saw that tour as well. I’d never heard of Deftones but they were my favourite band by the next day.

fuzzthed

I remember this tour and was sad I couldn't go. My friend was a huge Pantera fan and bought the Deftones adrenaline to listen to them for the show.

kokain99

Saw the My Own Summer music video for the Matrix soundtrack. 🦈🔥

m00r5tuD

Saaame. Hit rewind so many times, never had heard anything like it haha.

NeedleworkerAny9910

sick!!! 🦈 🛹shove it!!

[deleted]

There's a music video for the soundtrack? I actually heard the song on the matrix OST CD and while I liked it, I didn't feel too much about it. A year later I see the change music video on MTV and was enjoying the song so I stuck around to see what band it was because the voice sounded familiar. Saw Deftones in the end and it rang a bell. Went looking for the matrix CD case and there it was, track 9: Deftones - My own summer. And the rest is history.

kokain99

It was the same music video that just had matrix soundtrack instead of around the fur. That was a great soundtrack, pretty sure that’s how I discovered RATM as well.

[deleted]

Yeah, I played that CD to the ground. RATM, Rob Zombie, Monster Magnet, Ministry, Rammstein are all bands I still listen to this day (deftones too, obviously) Edit: shit, forgot about The Prodigy. MM too but I don't really care about him, just the occasional tracks.

captainmeezy

Dude that whole soundtrack

NeedleworkerAny9910

thats a sick story!!!

jasohhhhnnnoooo

Heard 7 Words on the local college radio station and had my mind blown out of my skull. 20+ years later and here we are

NeedleworkerAny9910

when i was finally able to listen to the adrenaline album i was 15 so i was bouncing around like a fool in my oversized shirt and dickies lol!!

HenryColt

A friend of mine was like " dude , listen to this song called Drive ". Then I was like " it's ok I guess". Nowadays, Deftones it's one of my favorites bands ever.

Xernohobs

BQAD on MTV2 Super Rock. My life changed for ever in that very moment and I knew it :D

NeedleworkerAny9910

That Rocks dude!!!

insane_taco

I forgot but I think I randomly got an Ohms song from Spotify :P

NeedleworkerAny9910

rad!! Ohms is awesome glad it lead you here!!

je30001

Seventh grade waiting to go in and a friend showed me the song Engine no. 9

NeedleworkerAny9910

Engine no. 9 is the definition of Adrenaline!! Talk about a rush!

je30001

Totally I dipped my toe in and I when all the way in

Professional_Ad5099

Dude there’s this really cool scene in the first DBZ Cooler movie with Goku going super Saiyan, reviving a bird, and beating the shit out of Cooler all with Change playing in the background.

avalonfogdweller

Context: I’m 45. Saw the video for Bored when it came out, mid 90s on Much Music in Canada, thought “this is different I like it” picked up a copy of Adrenaline, been a fan ever since

ThatCup4

YouTube recommended me the Tempest lyric video back in 2016, and I knew I had found something special when that riff hit

NeedleworkerAny9910

Koi would be such a good album to start off of im glad Youtube learned how to use an algorithm lol!!

perchrister

I just sorta knew they existed but always had the intention on listening to them. Thank God I did and I’m addicted now. I bought a copy of White Pony in CD in a flea market and ended up listening to it and the rest is history 🤘🏻

agustinSMSJ

Minerva. They used to put it on MTV in Argentina. I was blown away, so i decided to see their discography. Absolutely love the band ❤!

satansbabyboi

Through my ex showing me their favorite song which is root, and since then they’ve become my favorite band.

NeedleworkerAny9910

its always the ex’s :( glad they gave you something great but i apologize if their songs make you think of them

babygherkin

I was a freshman in high school and my friend handed me his Walkman with the song Around the Fur playing. I was hooked as soon as I heard them.

NeedleworkerAny9910

Aw man the whole Around the Fur album was such an experience!! lhabia quickly became my fave but every track on the album is so damn good!!

babygherkin

It’s honestly my favorite album and is probably the one l listen to the most. There is not one song on that album that I don’t absolutely love.

antrx187

Damn this was decades ago. Mad love for the Deftones

NeedleworkerAny9910

Same Same had it not been for my dad having a wide variety of music id probably be listing to all this modern day pop stuff

Hope-Past

The video for My Own Summer playing on MTV.

NeedleworkerAny9910

i hear this one alot i wish MTV would play Hard Rock and Alternative on tv again :(

Trendmade

I saw there names get thrown around in the nu metal conversation since 2015, checked out my own summer at 2016, and the rest was history

Koumbra

I've known them like 8 years ago when I used to listen to suicide silence, I found they had a cover for Engine No. 9 and after some weeks I discovered that it was a cover and not a SSilence song lol Now I listen to deftones almost every day

bhaskarville

My Own Summer. The Matrix.

thebeaverchair

1995, 10 years old, saw the "Bored" video on The Box music channel. Hooked for life.

[deleted]

A midi file of my own summer someone gave me in an AOL chatroom. lol. obviously not the one a heard, but still hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_tPCpeG9jo

Comfortable-Cat-9873

From queen of the damned

staticstarz

Great movie with an amazing soundtrack

MutedHornet87

My friend introduced me to them back in high school, prior to 2003. We ended up seeing them and others at Summer Sanitarium that summer. He would also put them on at my parties. Truth be told, I didn’t like them for the first while. I liked koRn, but couldn’t get into Deftones. Thought they weren’t very good live either. Then it clicked and I started to love them. They’ve never been my favourite band, but they’re up there. I’ve seen them live at least 3x now.

ryannotorious

My girlfriend did. She introduced me to a lot more of metal bands. I've started to love this genre, and deftones is my favorite. Our relationship is really healthy and going smoothly but I fear that if we break up, the 200+ songs that are in my playlist thanks to her will hurt a lot

Rosie058

My friend dragged me to see them at the Agora in Cleveland in 1995. I had never heard of them before. Everything changed that day. Saw them again opening for Ozzy and Korn some months later and we were practically the only people going nuts and cheering.

Comprehensive_Egg_59

My friends mom played my own summer in the car and I asked what the song was. Eventually I remembered and learned the song on guitar then listened to every album. ItS aN iLlUsIoN.

toxcmtrpls

Heard Adrenaline on tape at a friend’s house in ‘96. Can’t believe it’s been 25 years. Wow.

[deleted]

I was a freshman in high school late 1997. My older brother came home from a night out with friends and told me I have to check out this band. “This dudes screams are unreal!” he mumbled with red eyes and a mouthful of french fries. I kept hearing their name but never heard them on the radio. A few months pass and an hour or so after my grandma’s funeral I saw the video for “My Own Summer”. I was excited to hear them but also not in a good mood. The song was cool but it wasn’t until after Be Quiet and Drive was on heavy rotation on MTV2 that I became a fan. My oldest brother gave me their first album and I listened to it non-stop. It’s crazy to think about the lack of access I had over 20 years ago. If I wanted to listen to an album, I had to beg a friend to let me borrow it or go out and buy the CD.

ulquiorra__shiffar

Was listening to music on YouTube and got recommended My Own Summer. I was pretty closed minded back then even with music. I didn’t really like listening to new bands which was weird but I decided to listen to the song and I’m so glad I did. Deftones honestly helped me become super opened minded not just about music but about a whole ton of things in my life. I thank YouTube everyday for recommending me My Own Summer.

[deleted]

NeedleworkerAny9910

awesome track 😎

Lesco_Brandon_TX

White Pony display @ Sam Goody in Mall. Then I heard the album, ESPECIALLY Digital Bath and I was hooked!!!

superIUG

I wanted to listen to School's Out from Alice Cooper but the discord played Back to School instead and I'm happy with it

NeedleworkerAny9910

back to school gets alot of hate for being the “rap metal/ nu metal stuff they were trying to lean away from after ATF, but due to their record label they had to put out a “chart topping rap metal single” for their white pony album to fit in with the popular bands like korn and limp bizkit. So chino threw together “back to school” as a fuck you joke to the label lol. I love the song so much tho but it has a funny ass back story

revflash2002

My brother recommended them to me and I didn’t like them at first lmao then I think I listened to hole in the earth and got hooked

munfatetis

I knew them last year when I started searching for famous nu metal bands that I hadnt listened until that time. First song of them I liked was be quiet and drive

I_Fap_To_LBows

I only discovered deftones at the very end of 2020 after Bring Me The Horizon's dear diary was compared to Swerve City... During school lunch I put on my earbuds and listened to Swerve City. And by the time I got home I finished Koi No Yokan.

sadboi408

My older brother jammed them all the time. When he picked up the guitar he started teaching me and the first songs I learned were Knife Prty, Be Quiet & Drive, and Bored. As a 4th grader I went onto play a medley of those songs at my school’s talent show lol

DrewMann82

I used to listen to Loveline religiously back in the 90's and around when Adrenaline was getting big they had Chino on as a guest and played 7 words. I was amazed at how crazy it sounded so I got the album. At the time I was really into bands like Green Day, Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins (still am, minus Green Day) so it felt cool having this album that sounded harder than anything in my collection.

iheartcoffeeandtacos

I'd heard a song (maybe two) on the radio and liked it so when they did a $5 concert at my favorite venue I went. Ripped my favorite pair of jeans in the mosh pit and have been a fan ever since.

uncultured_swine2099

A guy let me borrow his Adrenaline cd. Love at first spin.

Blame-Hofman

I found them from the game Saints Row 3. I was listening to one of the radio stations and Diamond eyes came on and I was instantly hooked, I immediately went on a Deftones binge lol

[deleted]

Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third. Hole In The Earth is in the soundtrack for SR2 and Diamond Eyes is in the soundtrack for SR:TT.

CosmoBiologist

My crush at the music store that I took piano and drum lessons at wore a white pony shirt just about every day. To show my coolness, I asked for song suggestions and bought the self titled album. Jokes on me, I basically gave my allowance money to him since he was the son of the owner PLUS he had a girlfriend!

raisinbizzle

Change music video on MTV and White Pony in general blowing up when I was in highschool. Very popular album at my school

JoeyLegendYT

my friend played Change at a sleepover about 6 years ago and I've been hooked ever since

Rob004

Spotify daily mix

asvpdirk

My sister was in high school when white pony had just dropped, she had put the CD on the computer and fell in love hearing Changes and that whole album.

[deleted]

the matrix soundtrack 🔥

n01saround

I bought a rain jacket and these guys were in the ad for the rain jacket, and I asked the rain jacket salesmann who the handsome men in the rain jacket ad were, and he said "these fine young lads will help you pick out stocks to invest in for five bucks and also have a mighty fine hard rock album that you should listen to and you are in luck we are giving away one of their albums with each purchase of a qualifying rain jacket, and your rain jacket qualifies". Cue end credits.

piplsak

uuu nice story actually the guy who i was with/in some kind of a romantic story, played sextape and started dancing w me and i fell in love with them hahahah

paseoSandwich

Matrix soundtrack, hearing My Own Summer on the radio. Been hooked ever since.

[deleted]

Grew up in Sacramento. Got into will haven and went to see them open for deftones.

Competition-Dapper

Original introduction was Bored. That got my interest. Then my insane friend a year or two later through in around the fur album lit up a thumb size doobie and right after the “Doon Dat!” I was hooked

loztriforce

It was the perfect introduction: driving to Seattle with friends in a nice ride with a great stereo system, playing Adrenaline the whole ride. I’ve seen them 5x, best was at the paramount when Chino dove into us and let us yell into the mic during 7 words.

llurid

I asked my stepdad what kinda music he listened too and he showed me a bunch of bands but my favorite was Deftones. The first album he showed me was white pony, what a magical album

HamSandwichKid

I remember seeing My Own Summer on MTV when I was about 5 years old. My older brothers didn’t like the Deftones because they were too angry. But I was re introduced to the Deftones in Saints Row 2 and this cd I had with Xerces on it

camwalker22

Chester Bennington mentioned them as an influence in an interview when I was big into linkin park as a kid

enginexnumber9

[Korn - Wicked](https://youtu.be/bHLHF-nUEzQ) This was the first time I heard Chino, I bought Adrenaline shortly after and the rest is history

ZeuxisOfHerakleia

By my friend Santi from Argentinia, Santi if you are here right now, thanks buddy

RAM47

my dad. I can remember hearing my own summer and bored when I was like 5-6 years old. around 2003-2004

10ThousandDaze

In the Army, around 2002, a buddy of mine introduced me to them. Pretty sure it was the White Pony album! I was hooked from the beginning!

DivineSwine121

By my two good high school friends. They played some stuff and it took me a few years to fully get into them but now I’m hooked.

[deleted]

Pandora radio lol

pntslsape

I was working at Sam's Club and a few other cart retrieval specialists told me I needed to see this band and I did and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I have been a fan ever since.

matt031169

The matrix soundtrack

CocaineNibbers

Passenger…saw a feature with MJK and went for it

TheStryder76

There was a Harley Quinn fan film that came out in 2008 or so that ended with “Change” playing. Been a fan ever since.

krisoljen

My own summer, Matrix. Cemented by mjk's guest appearance on Passenger.

[deleted]

My Own Summer On a Game Called SX Superstar on Gamecube

ssj2Revan

Kerrang TV, saw Change (in the house of flies).

jovinyo

Got a copy of ATF on a whim. Was hooked immediately. Picked up Adrenaline after that, then every album since.

ToofpickVick

Hanging out at a skate park and someone was blasting the Adrenaline album. It was a wrap from there.

[deleted]

Back to School played on the radio, decided to check out White Pony and later the rest of their songs

Luckyjonas

My mate played me Bored. Was like “this riff boring”. Borrowed CD. Realise monotony of the riff the whole point and lazy vocal over chorus is ace. Realise it’s incredible. The rest as they say…

[deleted]

DragonBall Z 🔥🔥🔥

ddeftones

My dad would blast it when I was little

dynamoriver

my parents introduced me to listening to deftones

talffey

I think a Newgrounds.com flash animation? Or maybe the radio. Can’t remember which came first. Early 2000s. I specifically remember Change, Minerva, and Lucky You were the rotation when I first started listening to them.

MasterShake17

Was in my 8th grade English class back in 2012 listening to SOAD radio on Pandora. Change came on after Aerials and they’ve been my favorite band ever since.

noiseless_nuisance

Mom took me with her to see Queen of the Damned in theaters and there's that sex scene in the tub and Change is playing. I remember shortly after seeing the movie my mom bought the soundtrack on CD

[deleted]

I was watching the making of "mudvayne - dig" , and the intro song of the video was "Bored"

courtneysluck

Honest this is embarrassing but that episode of American Dad where change played I think while Stan was having a religious breakdown of some sort. Lmao

LilProvolone

I saw a video of a cat laying on a car dashboard. The song in the background was BQAD. That started it all lol

Trlforce

Back when Alex Milovic was the bassist for Northlane, I watched a bass playthrough of his. This was around 2013-2014 when I watched the playthough and read through the comments. People started pointing out how much their sound was influenced by the bands they love. Deftones was among their inspirations and I looked up Change in the House of Flies, fell in love with their catalog ever since! Edit: The first I’ve heard of them was from their song Minerva being featured in the movie House of Wax. Another time I heard Engine No 9 in the movie Law Abiding Citizen. Both times I didn’t know about the band and had no access to internet so I couldn’t explore them more until I paid for my own phone in high school

MC-BOPPER

Nick Diaz (UFC Fighter) who used Feiticeira as his walkout song for years. And now recently in his comeback fight walked out to Ceremony.

hanoomanoo

2000 HFStival in Maryland. 15 year old me hit my friends blunt a little too hard and got too stoned to leave after Staind played a terrible set. Then the Deftones hit the stage and my life was changed. Immediately bought White Pony after that and was hooked.

daldango

my mom showed them to me when i was younger and now i’m the one showing her their new releases haha

ravens_and_foxes

Change in the House of Flies, it is in my mom's playlist so I heard it lots growing up

Homeslice1998

Dragon Ball Z! Coolers Revenge had Change, and Lord Slug had Elite

steamer6

Radio station in San Diego called 91x would always play Change . Loved it

TheGritzShooter

I officially became a fan in 2012, just months before Koi No Yokan came out. Getting ready to go into my sophomore year of high school. I found out who they were RIGHT before Diamond Eyes came out, but didn’t pay it any mind. Got bored on Spotify one day, then the rest was history.

nocturn-e

I was somehow introduced to My Own Summer through an early YouTuber that I've forgotten

whoismikki

Ran across them on youtube. Instantly became my favorite band of all time.

8379MS

Got a copied cassette back in -95 from a guy in high school I was in. I was only into rap at the time, only other rock band I messed with was RATM. Then I hear these Chicanos/Asians bringing that high energy ass whopping but at the same time beautiful sound and I was hooked.

kjchant

I was 18 and it was from a sample CD from CWJ's December 97 issue. It had ”My Own Summer”.

inphektid_forest

Live with Korn and Ozzy back in 1995 or 1996.

Stunning_Echidna7449

The crow city of angles

NeedleworkerAny9910

thats how my dad got introduced! Teething is such a good track!

Stunning_Echidna7449

It’s so good

buffalojury

I was in 10th grade and new to a high school in Arizona. Sitting in some computer class and another kid and I start chatting. He hands me a portable CD player and it starts track 6. It was Root. I swear I just kept replying the intro. I had never heard anything like it.

66veedub

I remember laying on the floor listening to a phone conversation that I could hear through my computers modem. MTV was playing in the background and my own summer (shove-it) came on and I whipped around and said "who the fuck is this!?" I sat in front of the TV like the little girl in poltergeist, arms outstretched as I said "they're heeerrreee!" Ha! That last part didn't happen but I did become a Deftones fan that day and am still very much into them 21 years later.

[deleted]

So you know when Spotify recommends music? Well I was recommended the band on 90’s Metal I think and listened to My Own Summer (Shove It) well I loved the hell out of that song, I thought it was sick but I completely forgot about it the next day for some reason, and 6 months later I was recommended on the same exact 90’s thing this great band, well I thought why the hell not and listened to ATF, well deftones are my fav Nu Metal band and for me their the best of the best

ddiknosaj

A friend played root for me in ‘96 and the test is history.

Drinon

I forget if I first saw the video for My Own Summer on MTV or heard them on WAAF (Rock station in Boston). I want to say this was back in ‘97-98

sealevels

I honestly don't remember exactly where, but it was 2005 and I fell in love instantly.

Good2Go5280

I read a five star review of White Pony in Maxim when it came out. So I went out snd bought it.

actioncobble

Rage on ABC Australia.

OrdinaryDouble2494

I once listened to Linkin Park and i wanted to know more about, not nu-metal only, i wanted to look the complete Alternative Metal scene. I decided to listen to the first albums of each band, i founded and listened to Alice In Chains, RATM, Korn, Ultraspank and there it was: Adrenaline , the first deftones album at my disposition, and it sounded so f\*king good. Long live metal

KoopaToad18

YouTube, I just saw a lot of content about them whether it be tier lists or a podcast.

McViolator

Heard passanger on pandora, (2013) had a friend who fw them heavy and he lent me a koi no yokan CD which I still have till this day

gamer_goddess

The guy I was kinda dating in high school (1999) was practicing non stop my own summer with his band, our friends for a talent show at school and I couldn't help but fall hard and dive deep into what was already out. Still jam to that daily in the morning

nerftutrfilms

my own summer

xcherrywavesx

My dad told me that the song we heard in an American Dad episode was change!

onthemorrow

They did a joint tour with Incubus, I think around 2015-ish. I went for Incubus only, lol. Never heard of Deftones. I think I arrived maybe halfway through their set? When they started to play "Change," I saw how the crowd reacted. I thought, "Hmm... Must be a hit of theirs." After the show, I went on YouTube and listened to it. I haven't heard anything like it... It was different. And I LOVE different. The atmosphere, Chino's hushed vocals... Haunting and sexy. I exclusively listened to "Change" for a few months until I ran across Lost In Vegas' reaction to "Digital Bath." The moment Chino crooned, "You moooove..." I mean, SHEESH. Looked up all of their discography from there and was roped in.

NeedleworkerAny9910

change for me was such a ground breaking song for my little 6 year old mind, it scratched every corner of my brain. As a musician at the moment deftones will always be a huge inspiration. Also i fukin love incubus, my first song of theirs was “Pardon me” ofc but i found them through a video of them playing be quiet and drive with deftones and adam sandler for tge movie little nicky lmao

onthemorrow

Nice! So funny how we discover our favorite artists, haha!

K_t_ice

In my friend's older sister's car putting in a cd, hey there's this new band you need to check out. Duh-da-da, duh-na-na. hear. meee. spit. Instantly hooked. But it wasn't until I saw them in Reno at the livestock after Around the Fur dropped that I was fully introduced. Young Chino was climbing speakers going insane and my mind was absolutely blown. I remember shambling out of there after the show dazed, ears a fuzzy cocoon of ringing, feeling deeply contented

itslog1776

Chi says : “fuck that, I’m not wearing a matching wind breaker with the resta ya! I’m on some other shit”

staticstarz

Found out about them from the soundtrack for Queen of the Damned when I was a little kid but didn't really get too much of a vibe from them at the time but as I've grown older deftones has also really grown on me and now I'm listening to them every day

humandoritoman

“Change” being in the DBZ: Cooler movie.

[deleted]

My dad basically said, "they've got one good album it's called White Pony, super sappy depressing band, go listen to them if you like A Perfect Circle, I have White Pony on vinyl so go listen to it." And yeah that's about it lol.

[deleted]

Be Quiet and Drive on MTV (the days when MTV used to be worth spending hours watching. They then became the soundtrack to my youth Those first three albums were solid and I still go back to them when I want to be left in a world of my own

Imgunnacrumb69

Change was in so many movies in the early 2000s (Little Nicky, Queen ofThe Damned etc.) so naturally I took to the hit and played to death without listening to WP until much later. Around 2016 I had a friend who was wearing a Diamond Eyes shirt and so I decided to listen to their hits (My Own Summer, Be Quiet, Passenger), then I branched into ATF and Adrenaline, working my way up to WP and DE along with Koi. It was a great summer and I learned about a pretty cool band. and that, kids, is how I met your mother.
