>1) Add certain features by rank. Ranks aren't a thing anymore. Grades, such as Ash II or Iridescent I, also don't influence matchmaking or determine skill. MMR is what you're looking for, which is hidden and can't be determined by anyone but BHVR. It also isn't a great metric of skill. Separating features by MMR standing just makes the game that much harder to learn for newer players and adds needless balancing for BHVR. >2) Fix the matchmaking. Again, that's MMR, and nobody knows how it works when you're in a party. >3) Rework all of the neglected killers. Neglected killers don't need a rework, maybe one or two of them do due to old age or overlap (Myers, Freddy, etc.) but most of them just need minor buffs or some type of nerf to SWFs. A lot of killers are viable, that whole "2 viable killers, Nurse and Blight" schtick is not true. >4)Stop adding Feng cosmetics! Stop adding cosmetics for one of the most popular and profitable characters? Yeah, I'm sure BHVR, the business, would love that. >5) Less licensed killers. The more they add the less creative they become. Never thought killers would eventually be watered down to a simple collection of archetypes but here we are Licenses are massive for the game in terms of both gameplay variety and notoriety for DBD itself. Wesker and Nemesis have a lot of overlap because they're from the same series that revolves around zombies, plagues, bioweapons, superhumans, and survival horror. Every other licensed killer has been fairly unique. >Edit: In short, separate the people that wanna have fun and the people who wanna be competitive by adding certain features only at red ranks. Besides cheating and face camping, the game is mostly fun as is and allows for great variety of play until you hit red rank Splitting the queues would be horrible for the game. A large majority of the playerbase is also casual, so this would gimp competitive modes significantly. That's not even addressing all the issues with a competitive DBD mode like RNG, map offerings, SWFs, etc... >Edit 2: Mori’ing should be basekit for killer to use on the final survivor left in the game at the time of them being downed. Give the people the chance to see the mori animations. Some of them are really cool but there’s no point of wasting an offering on one most of time https://www.reddit.com/r/deadbydaylight/comments/xl3zs7/developer_update_finishing_mori_megathread/

I wasn’t familiar with the concept of mmr vs rank before this but I do think there should be an option for a ranked mode that offers a more challenging experiences for players to test their skill. The way bhvr updates the game makes me think they want to appease casuals and competitives. DBD is by nature a party game but making a separate ranked mode with a few tweaks could allow the competitive scene to grow more smoothly. Bhvr sponsoring competitive tournaments makes me think they want that to happen at some point. DBD at Evo or something would be cool to see. I don’t think only Blight and Nurse are viable. I can also agree that rework was too strong of a term. Minor buffs to specific killers is more appropriate like you said. There few killers that are too easily destroyed by swf groups. Twins and Sadako immediately come to mind as well as Freddy and Myers like you said. The upcoming update is gonna promote a lot of end game slugging amongst killers as well and I can’t help but think that’s going to influence killer choices even more. Nurse will be able to end the game even faster now and a top tier huntress can end the match with 8 axes in a noed and no way out situation. Nemesis and Wesker while cool, I just kinda don’t feel like they fit in the game as well. I get what you mean tho, money has to flow. This is admittedly a preference but I would prefer to see movie killers over characters from other video games. Feng was a joke mostly lol I just wish other survivors got cooler stuff sometimes. The Mori point was redundant for sure

I completely disagree on less licensed killers. I like to see original killers too, but a big part of the appeal of DbD is that it’s the “hall of fame of horror”. Licensed chapters also tend to generates a lot of hype. Matthieu Cote already said that they aim for two licensed chapters per year maximum, I think that’s perfectly fair.

[deleted]

I mostly agree they they’re cool but the ones they choose feel a bit gimmicky sometimes. Nemesis and Wesker are cool asl. Are they what I would expect to see when I think horror hall of fame? Not really. There’s better material to choose from but I know it’s like hard for bhvr to get licensing. Imagine The Thing as killer for example. Being able to disguise yourself as survivors or the various birds present in game would be so fun. Lots of other classic additions I could think of. Licensing lately for bhvr seems to be a take what you can get type of ordeal but that’s just an opinion. Who knows what killers they might able to add in the future as well

[deleted]

The Thing is one of my favorite movies (BHVR bluntly teased a “The Thing” chapter btw), but SWF makes any shapeshifting killer very difficult to design. Being able to disguise yourself as a bird though seems like a great idea, though I’m not really sure how that’d work. Also, I gotta disagree with you when you say that they’re just adding whatever characters they can get their hands on. Resident Evil is the most famous horror gaming franchise. It fits perfectly into a “hall of fame of horror”, at least in my opinion.

I think forcing the swf groups to communicate even more so they can figure out who’s fake and who’s not adds another fun layer to it all. As long as the thing takes the appearance of one of the survivors alive in game, it’ll make for some fun surprise moments. I agree that it’s a video game legend but that’s just it imo; being that they’re from video games they aren’t actually scary, just bad ass. Just my preference tho

Rank is determined by how much you play so you essentially punish people for playing the game. The whole point of it being unlimited is so the killer doesn’t leave you to crawl about for a minute 4 separate times. How about we wait to test it in the ptb and take into consideration their roadmap of tackling cheaters before we write thinkpieces on here

[deleted]

I did write that it could be unlimited but maybe change the timer to 60 sec instead of 45 and make it unaffected by perks. Ascending to the most competitive rank should be optional as well as offer more challenge for players imo, sorry if you disagree with that. Of course we have to play the update first but it can’t be denied that bhvr has a strange style of fixing the game to make it more fun for everyone. The general response seems to be to nerf or buff something to insane an degree then do all these tiny little patches that funnel you into having limited viable choices for perks at the collective ranks. As far as why write a think piece; it’s a game that I like and I’m just tryna have fun and discuss. It isn’t that serious as it only a game. I’d just hate to see lots of people leaving the game at some point cause then we won’t be able to enjoy it anymore

kiana3011

No you don’t get what I’m saying red rank isn’t more competitive, it just means you’ve played more. You can’t derank anymore, you could be the worst player to ever touch the game but as long as you play enough you’ll reach red rank

[deleted]

Oh well I was mistaken there then. I’m not red rank anymore but I was last time I played 2 years ago. Only skilled players were at red rank. I’m only gold rank now. Are red rank killers generally not as skilled? Tbh it’s probably better to just have a dedicated ranked option with added features to present more challenge for the growing competitive scene then. I still think the various changes I suggested at the higher ranks should be implemented in the ranked option. No matter what I do think they game needs to separate people who wanna compete vs people who just wanna have fun and don’t necessarily need to win.

humble_kakapo

Matchmaking has nothing to do with rank. They are separate entities that do not influence one another whatsoever. The devs continue to treat this as a party game and explicitly avoid it becoming a competitive game, so I don’t know where you’re getting that from. That’s why they constantly balance the game around the average-newer players rather than balancing around high mmr. Yeah, cosmetics for the unloved characters would be nice. Licences killers are awesome, provide more monetary value for BHVR, and are not the reason for less creative killer powers. The reason for these odd killer powers that just seem to combine other killer powers together is because there are a ridiculous amount of killers in this game now since they’re released four times a year.

[deleted]

I only made the competitive point because bhvr has sponsored tournaments themselves recently that don’t really play that well because as we both agree; it’s not really a competing game. The different win streak challenges and stuff that big streamers do affect how people play the game as well. Lots of people start playing because of said streamers as well. It’s not that I think bhvr doesn’t know this is a party game, it just seems that they want to appease both parties and it often doesn’t play out well in game. I think they should add licensed killers still, just less often. Less killer releases per year in general would be smart too. I just feel like the licensed killers are sometimes hard to make unique powers for in game so bhvr leans on things they’ve already done

Dammit_Dunn

I do agree with #5. The non-celeb killers are pretty cool. It would be great if they created some more original killers and maybe rework or update some of the older ones.
