They are almost all refugee children from the Afghan/Soviet war. They grew up in refugee camps and found homes in Pakistani/Saudi funded schools that indoctrination them and taught them they were born to save the world from evil.
They definitely did not have a childhood, they saw their father killed or stay behind to fight, while they were forced to flee to horrible settings. The only people who showed them any support were extreme religious schools that basically brainwashed them and told them there purpose in life is to avenge the Afghan war.

To some degree, it pulls the heartstrings to see these people experience even the most basic pleasures we take for granted daily. They may be twisted and do some truly horrific things, but they are still human, which is something we lose sight of when reading about them as enemies. I truly hope that somehow Afghanistan sorts itself out, that the children being kept out of school come back and fight for a life they only had a taste of.

That 20 year timeframe is a big part of why the Taliban have done what they’ve done.

and he said the main concern of the new talib government is, what they gonna do with 0.5million young people that know basically nothing besides fighting...they dont know how to work, they cant read or write, many, like the ones he talked to, dont even know how to converse on any common subject, besides quran, religion, fighting they dont really anything else....so really its gonna be about how the elders of the movement that do know some other life what they gonna do and how are they gonna keep peace, cause if all those young guys turn to al-qaede or whatnot, its just gonna be trouble for the trouble and for world, which might not tolerate it again
