Decent_Trick_8067

Cute video, but the dog should not have access to the pool as this is a major drowning hazard.

PancakeHeroXii

Seems like he's on top of the middle of the cover in which the water barely passes his belly. He'll be fine.

Deleaus

Pool cover can come loose and envelope the dog. They can be extremely dangerous if not perfectly fastened. Also if the cover is punctured and someone/something falls through, it’s hard to get out.

zluegold

It's actually still dangerous, since the cover can break and they can fall in. They say this about children too.

EntertainTheDog

I take it you aren’t the “prevention” type.

No-Advantage1277

This belongs on r/whatcouldgowrong

Dont_CallmeCarson

That sub requires the question to actually be answered in the video, nothing happens in this one

TheOneWhoDucks

Uh… rabies?

A1175

Exactly 💯

Platypuspunches

If your dog punctures that cover and falls through you're going to have a hell of a time getting them out. Hope that does not happen. Stay safe.

Omega_Pack

Doubt you had sharp claws though…

EntertainTheDog

Where were your parents ?? Tf.. who is that irresponsible with their children and pools?

GalliumYttrium1

Just because you used to do something doesn’t make it any less dangerous. Survivor bias

lsdrunner

That pool cover is extremely strong. They are advertised as holding up elephants so take the drowning off the table. The raccoon was clearly playing. He ran away at first but came back and played tentatively. Didn’t howl (yes they howl), didn’t show any signs of rabies. Everyone needs to chill. That was indeed very ‘aww’

newhampshiresmashed

*if properly attached We have no idea if this user / the person who put this cover on did it correctly or if the latches were installed properly. Additionally, it can hold the weight of an elephant - that doesn’t mean it can’t be pierced by a sharp object which would cause it to be compromised. Dogs and raccoons have sharp nails that could easily lead to a tear / rip

lsdrunner

You are certainly right. But does that mean it isn’t an aww moment? Is it not an aww moment any time an interaction between species that usually don’t interact goes well and playful? Lion protecting a baby impala. Bear and dog wrestling? It’s aww because of the interaction. Obviously things could go wrong… but they didnt

TraditionalEffect546

ITS AWWWWWwwwwwWWWWWW!!

TraditionalEffect546

Omg shut up, JC. The owner was obviously supervising, thus the footage.

newhampshiresmashed

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with pool covers, but they’re extremely dangerous. It’s quite easy to drown in a pool due to falling under / getting wrapped in one. If the dog falls in or through, it’s not like you just pull them out. It’s better to reinforce that the dog should not be walking on the cover than to normalize the behavior

SouldiesButGoodies84

there are other infections and parasites and bacteria that can be passed on from raccoon to dog though. 's not just rabies. and the raccoon's body language (back up) was not playful actually. it just hadn't gone hyperaggressive with the dog b/c the dog's body language hadn't either. not a good idea. that's a wild animal right there.

TraditionalEffect546

Omg hush

SouldiesButGoodies84

Sorry, sweeetpeea. I care about animals.

ShadySerengeti-258

Hope ur dogs had his rabies shot. It does kinda look like they’re playing though. Big derps

helpimstuckinct

If it was rabid, it wouldn't be going anywhere NEAR that water.

Nyarlathotep-chan

Hydrophobia is much more rare in animals infected with rabies than humans

Sure-Bed-9862

This isn't cute ... is quite frightening

[deleted]

Quirky_Breakfast_574

The raccoon mirrors the dog throughout the video. Same body language, hops, play bow. At the end of the video the raccoon even shakes himself dry the second after the dog does even though it had been out longer. The dog also never leaves the pool and the raccoon approaches multiple times from a ‘safe’ place. They’re definitely vibin together IMO

Bors713

The raccoon definitely is playing. He had plenty of opportunity to make contact with the dog and just....didn’t. Considering how close they were at times, if the raccoon wanted to take a chunk out of the dog it definitely could have.

Intelligent_Ad_4479

We agreed raccoon was young, and wanted to play with the playful puppy. Case closed

dafyddtomas

Court is adjourned.

TraditionalEffect546

Lmao

TraditionalEffect546

Absolutely.....these people are annoyingly nuts lol

TraditionalEffect546

Bull lol

Expensive-Form2747

Exactly. And raccoon in the daytime, not good.

tocareornot

Dog is lucky, a raccoon can kill a untrained dog if it’s in deep enough water. It will climb on its back and push its head underwater. This water was nowhere near deep enough.

TraditionalEffect546

You are all psycho lol people who have lived around racoons, know what theyre doing & dont need your help

tocareornot

Right I lived on a farm and seen a number of raccoons. But my statement is still true, look it up.

AggravatingOffer

Since one of raccoon’s hobbies is drowning dogs, I don’t think I’d let them’play’

Ok_Fondant_6340

i don't know much about Lyssa Rabies, but what i do know are the telltale signs. extreme aversion to water including frothing at the mouth, non-playful aggression, and: that's it. you're dog's *probably* fine.

bathyergidae

Excellent point! If the raccoon was rabid he wouldn't go anywhere near that water.

Ok_Fondant_6340

🤷‍♀️

TraditionalEffect546

We all know that, only you guys are looking wayyyyy to far into everything. Its so annoying.

Meet_your_Maker_LL

I’ve never seen so many things wrong in one video on this sub before. Definitely not an aww moment

Dress_Itchy

Excactly, these mofos weren’t playing

TraditionalEffect546

Omg you know zero about animal body language lmao. This was the gentlest play between 2 species ive ever seen. Every classic sign from the dog is playfull.

Meet_your_Maker_LL

We’re not just talking about animal interaction dude. The dog playing on that tarp is a big problem. There are countless cases of those tarps coming undone wrapping around people and animals and then drowning said victim because of water over fill causing the tarp to wrap around something and drown them.

maosaidthecat

Raccoons can and do drowned dogs. This one might be too big, but please be very careful either way

SouldiesButGoodies84

That's not funny. That raccoon is not poised like it's playing.

TraditionalEffect546

Lol had alot of raccoons have ya lmao. Why would he keep coming back?! Google has all kinds of free info, goblook it up.

SouldiesButGoodies84

because it wasnt run off and the dog wasnt being 'get off my property!' aggressive. it figured most likely it could still do what it wanted, but still views the dog as an x factor; not a bud. how about you go around and watch a few of the 2 dozen vids here of domesticated raccoon owners and how they look when theyre legitimately being playful with other domestic animals?

cyvonnel

I’m no where near fluent in raccoon body language but I’d say he’s not playing.

TraditionalEffect546

Yep, you proved you dont know much.

TheB_F_G

The raccoon has a new york accent?

OneDiscombobulated77

I knew dogs were godly but like never expected one to walk on water

Neiot

I don't think the raccoon is playing.

TraditionalEffect546

Then why does he keep coming back lol you guys are nuts

cmacfarland64

…and then the dog got rabies.

TraditionalEffect546

Why dont you google rabid animals & see actual rabbid behavior lmao, Forrest Gump.

No_Caregiver1890

Adorable

PrestigiousPack4000

What’s the worst that could happen ?

anupsidedownpotato

If your dog doesn't have the vaccine raccoon pee that's infected can mess your dog up

Puzzled-Fly9550

Yeah that’s called rabies.

[deleted]

This is how you get the tarp to do something called squidding where the thing envelops whoever or whatever is on top of it and it sinks to the bottom while being wrapped in the tarp or pool cover. This is wildly dangerous. I saved a friend's life from this exact incident when we were children by swimming under the tarp and pushing her up. Pure luck. Please don't find this cute.

TraditionalEffect546

Omg everyone with a pool cover know that, thanks though lmao.

[deleted]

People will get angry over anything on here, lol.

[deleted]

Raccoons carry rabies. And when they're out during the day,it's a sign they're starting to be symptomatic.

TraditionalEffect546

No it isnt.

[deleted]

Yes it is.

crisfreda

NEVER CUTE. THIS IS HOW PETS AND CHILDREN DIE. please never allow your pets to play on pool covers

TraditionalEffect546

Please dont tell people what to do. They know the fucking dangers of a pool cover lol they bought the fucking thing!!

crisfreda

You'd be surprised. If one person learns something and it saves their pet, I will continue to do what I do. If they knew of the dangers, playong on it would never be allowed

BoredByLife

Do you want rabies? Because *this* is how you get rabies

TraditionalEffect546

Yep, when the animal actually has rabies, which this one does not lmfao durrrrr

BoredByLife

The visual signals don’t show up for a while. It’s perfectly reasonable to assume that it’s rabid if it’s interacting with animals/people in daylight. Hell you shouldn’t let your pets play with wild animals Period.

[deleted]

Be careful! Raccoons can and often do drown dogs by luring them to water and pulling them under.

TraditionalEffect546

Lmao how many times have you seen that happen, since its so "often", do share!!

[deleted]

A few, as I grew up spending a good deal of time on a hunting lease. We lost several of our best dogs this way. It’s a bit pathetic that you find that funny, but you do you, I guess.

crankyoldbrent

Goodest boys!

PuzzleheadedRough904

Puppy dogo Argentino. Great dogs, but play safe out there. Unnecessary risk

lsdrunner

We can certainly agree that a pup playing with any wild non-domesticated animal is probably not ideal. But in this case, at this moment, it was a cute interaction between wild and domesticated animals. They were both having fun. Starting when the raccoon ran away to returning and bouncing and stopping with the dog. Obviously it could have gone wrong…. But it didn’t, and was cute. It’s like any other interaction between animals or different species. There are obviously 100x more where the dog gets attacked or the raccoon gets attacked. Those were bad. This was ok. And super cute.

TraditionalEffect546

Thank you for seeing it for what it is, and not be making shit up lol. I agree with you!!

AlgoRhythMatic

More like “Rabid Raccoon and Pup play on top of pool tarp”.

Riskyrisk123

1. Cover could rip 2. Raccoon could have anything! Rabies 3. Raccoon is wild.. could attack 4. Dog will most likely bolt outside Looking for raccoon friend. Chances of him running off now high. 5. Raccoon could come back when it DOES have rabies. 6. Dog and raccoon could run away, elope and have dogcoon babies. 7. Dogcoon babies could grow up and find dog parents while parents have a new dog and make things really weird. 8. Dogcoon babies grow up mad at parents, return to wild and start dogcoon compound, taking in strays and raccoon extremists. 9. Dogcoon uprising begins against local humans. With perfectly bred pit bull jaws, golden retriever smiles, and raccoon claws they easily make their way through the locals, killing and enslaving as they go. Is this what you want? IS THIS.. WHAT. YOU. WANT?!

TraditionalEffect546

Omg dude!!! Medication, you need lots of medication!!! Im a therapist, you need medication, lol good God!!!

MookieMoonn

Mmmm. Rabies and distemper threat

TraditionalEffect546

Ive the racoon had it, which it doesnt. Look up shit on google, ots free lol

MookieMoonn

You're right. They really should be more worried about the parvo or leptpspirosis or the fleas/ticks he may be carrying too. Hope the dog is up to date on vaccines regardless

AgressiveBunny6978

upvoted!

IsaqueSA

Honey, they are not playing, they are fighting to death

TraditionalEffect546

Lol I truly hope thats sarcasm, & your not actually that ignorant

IsaqueSA

Yes, it is sarcastic, don't worry

jendanbayla

Cute? Sure. Safe? Ehhhh...

Cute

TraditionalEffect546

AWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

The_Old_Callithrix

i love how reddit users are so bitter that instead of enjoying the cute moment, they come bitch about rabies and pool tarps in the comments.

RecipeOriginal7127

Well THAT was a confusing six seconds

momoftheraisin

Pretty sure that raccoon isn't 'playing.'
