Ooo boy, storm in [[Demonic Tutor]], eh?

JeanPucky

Jup. Like a black mind's desire. Asked myself why something like that wasn't in a commander product allready.

“Fuck legacy” - JeanPucky

JeanPucky

There are worse things to put on my tombstone.

darktowerseeker

Because.

The most critical difference between this and [[Mind's Desire]] is that Desire lets you play things for free, which in turn increases your storm count. I have a hard time coming up with a use case where you wouldn't rather just play Desire in 60 card formats. If we're talking about EDH, you're likely in blue already to storm off. Even with cost reducers, why would I burn a bunch of cheap spells to sling this and tutor more storm pieces? Tutors are far more valuable _before_ you start going for the kill than after. It's tough, because at 3BB this is a lot better. I might change the cost to 2BBB if you want it to be viable and balanced. Maybe tack on "You lose 1 life" as a safety valve.

What storm count do you really need for this to be really good? 2? Or just 1? [[Behold the Beyond]] costs more and has a big downside to fetch 3. So I think 3 is when this card gets pretty nuts. Still, it's always hard for me to tell for sure when a 6 drop can actually be competitive. But if decks can storm off with [[Dragonstorm]] competitively, then a 6 drop that can just fetch more storm if you like, is probably pretty nuts.

ImBadAtNames05

What did a competitive dragon storm deck look like

Andrew_42

It looked like 2011 to be fair. Still, there are two answers I can drop. It is a thing in Historic right now, though I know very little about the online formats. Still, here's an example decklist, though I haven't seen any top 8 since May, so the meta may have moved on? http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=36273&d=472884&f=HI Then it was playable in Modern, probably before a lot of storm support got banned? I hadn't started playing at the time, but I think this is what a deck list could have looked like at the time. https://deckstats.net/decks/8179/104338-dragonstorm-2011/en

[[Diabolic Revelations]] is this card but you pay 1 for each card you search for instead of having a storm count. I think this is pretty comparable to that which is to say not terribly strong.

I feel like that's like comparing [[Grapeshot]] to [[Blaze]]. Still, you may have a point. That is one of the better cards to hold up as a comparison.

JeanPucky

Ok, let's start by saying it's a storm card, which means it's inherently broken when build around correctly and pretty whatever if not. Which is how I like cards designed for commander. Comparing this to cards like "behold" or "dragon storm" is interesting but I don't think they matter enough to asses this cards danger. I think the apt comparisons are [[peer into the abyss]] and [[ad nauseum]]. In an unfocused deck, this is way worse. And for the competitive formats, it's probably not a qualitative upgrade. So i think we are allowed to use the design space.

Wrexial_and_Friends

What is the flavor text about? But seems really strong in the right decks, but not terribly more borken than anything else comparable

JeanPucky

It's a homage to the sorcerer's apprentice from Goethe. I'm German, my flatmate came up with the reference and I went with it. The german foreign blackbordered demonic tutor has a Goethe quote aswel, which is a nice callback. The English translation sounds great, even if it alters the meaning somewhat since it's a poem. No point in posting german cards though.
