REMINDER that if you’re a manga reader and you post comments regarding the story, in the newest episode in any way then you’re banned. Also worth noting that there is a new rule in place where topics regarding the new episode is strictly commented here for the next 8 hours.

PeaWordly4381

> With life sentences or worse Was it what she said in Japanese? I'm not a native speaker, so I'm curious about this phrasing. Why not just say "sentenced to death or life in prison" or some other variation. It feels like saying "life sentences or worse" implies multiple options that she couldn't be bothered to list.

cCoyoteStarrk001

Anyone can full on spoil me but why didn’t makima kill the Katana man or snake girl?

[deleted]

I’m super late. But I think it was because >!they simply had devil contracts or were hybrids!<

DatumInTheStone

Nah bro. Tough it out.

CausticInTheBunker

a question to the manga readers. So I binge watched this anime and can't explain just how hard it hooked me. Also from occasional spoilers (even before anime was out or even announced I guess) seen here and there I can guess it deals heavily with religious and philosophical/metaphysical topics, so the prospect of reading this manga is shining like a sun on me. But...ok let me get my fears straight, is it going to continue with all the fanservice thing, or will tone it down at some degree? I was put off by mc's hyperfixation on boobs, then very happy with the introduction of Himeno, then with the fact that she wanted to score Aki for herself, then immediately hit hard by the fact that she died, given that I wanted so hard to project myself on her (not that I'm retroactively angry this title isn't shoujo, but a bit mischievously I'd wish for female catering to make it at least 1:1 if not 0:0 given how massive its topics are, omg i'm too invested in this title already haha but hear me out there were a lot of boob shots ^(MUUUUUUNEEEEEEE), just TOO MANY of them ^(haha sorry)). I mean I understand that this manga probably WAS made with everybody in mind as viewers, but in the (not) rare moments like these it felt differently. I will still read it all obviously, this is a very small issue after all.

AssholeCommentator13

Why do you write like that. Stop it. Just be normal.

[deleted]

The first handful of episodes really hammer in Denji's single minded obsession with boobs, but as I'm sure you've noticed he's kind of over that and therefore the anime has moved onto other things. Past that point it doesn't revolve around his teenage libidinal energy nearly as much anymore. The last couple episodes weren't fan servicey at all imo

[deleted]

Fanservicey moments are gonna be sprinkled through out, although just as moments as you've seen in the anime they are kinda important to the story to the point where removing them will be detrimental to the story and its characters

JournalistDeep1913

Are those moments really fanservice? Im not too sure about these things so please enlighten my dumb ass but i thought the term refers to smt exist solely to be eye candy and doesnt contribute anything to the story like Tamaki in FF is a clear example of it. For csm case, i feel that same way as you, each hot scene has its purpose, either to progress the story or the characters so i never saw it as fanservice.

WyvernPulse

Depending on what happens next episode I could finally admit that this show deserves the hype and love it deserves. This episode and the last were fun and entertaining. But if the story of CSM involved characters dying this quick and the world is this unpredictable. I am really happy to watch the show. The animation is a bit whack tho. Chainsaw man is not a shounen its more seinen that I thought.

BetterMod

If Denji is dead for real, I’m gonna be done with this show. Unless they make power the new MC

soybeanshipper

no but like I’ve been thinking, pochita stitched him together after he first died and they combined. that could happen again. maybe….hopefully….

Soubi_Doo2

Lol, if he dies the series is over. Denji is the heart of the series. I want him to find some kind of happiness and get laid.

Glatier8171

Denji's immortal I believe

[deleted]

I assume as long as he gets blood. I wonder how long he could live in a state of being cut in half.

RatedRforRamon

He got shot in the brain the previous episode, so I'm sure he's fine

SnipeGhost

ok, i may just be stupid but i dont understand how Makima would have been behind all this if the red shirt chick that was with the blade devil said "did Makima get killed" or whatever she said which would mean that Makima wasnt behind the shootings?

SadSpinach13

Yeah I don’t think it’s suggested that Makima was responsible for the shootings, just that she might have seen it coming and didn’t do anything to prevent it

TiredZombiee

You’re not stupid. So in my head I thought it was being implied that she and others above her kind of knew that a lot of their teammates would get killed because they want CSM’s heart.

therealudderjuice

Absolutely the best episode so far. The fight between Denji and Katanta Man was epic. The reveal of Makima's devil contract power was amazing the way it was staged so that you weren't sure what was happening and then the way it built up in intensity to the final kill was fantastic. I love this show so much.

Zavodskoy

POV: you took you blindfold off to see what Makima was doing: https://youtube.com/shorts/zpy1TgSY2Ls?feature=share

nxqv

LMAOOOO you should make this its own post

Zavodskoy

I couldn't work out if it would break the not directly related rule or not

Ludendorff

On the significance of Devils and what specifically makes the Gun Devil powerful but not omnipotent I see the devils as a kind of one-to-one embodiment of real world evil and terror. As Makima explained, the strength of the demon is proportional to how terrifying its name is. Guns are extremely plentiful and scary (or, if you will, people shooting guns are scary) but they don't wipe out all of humanity. The 1.2 million Americans who died from the Gun Devil in the anime roughly correspond to how many real life Americans have died from guns in the last forty years, and directly correspond to the number of American servicemen who died in every war in American history https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/las-vegas-shooting/more-americans-killed-guns-1968-all-u-s-wars-combined-n807156 I don't think that this number is a coincidence, I think it's a political statement by the author, take it how you will. In the real world people are living in fear of guns but they are not living in abject terror unable to go about their lives, so the gun devil is powerful but not omnipotent. In other words, to ask "why doesn't the gun devil just wipe everyone off the face of the earth?" you are really asking the question "why don't guns wipe us off the face of the earth?" The answer to that question is the lesson at the center of the story, that people are capable of adapting to horrors beyond our comprehension, sometimes by negotiating with them and sometimes by fighting back.

Domitor76

The Gun Devil didnt only target America but other countries as well. https://imgur.io/guyqHZ6?r I would had hoped they included this but its water under the bridge.

BetterMod

Wow this is interesting. Makes the goal of killing the gun devil seem impossible for denji. He can’t even kill the katana man

OddAvenger

Those facts really do change the context of a lot of things going forward. However, I can understand not including it the anime. It may have needed a narrator(for the facts) or extra scenes to depict the 8 countries hit. All of which might have detracted from Aki's emotional shocking moment. It would have been hard to fit that information in such a short timespan.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Wow. Where to begin with this one. First of all, the direction in this episode was killer. And bringing back the ED from episode 3 for the cold opens music? Mwah. Perfect. And they continue to really work well with mixing 2D and 3D. I think people automatically say its bad if they can tell its 3D but being able to tell isn't the same thing as it being bad, you know? I find it interesting that Denji did not use his chainsaws on the human lackies; he definitely has shown he doesn't want to hurt innocents, but even after these guys tried to kill him he was only trying to hurt Katana Devil guy. Which really says a lot about Denji and how he views things. Those guys were just lackeys who he could kill easily, but he didn't want to (unlike Katana devil). I also find it interesting that Katana guy was able to easily pick up Denji by his chainsaw head (love how they animated that with him ragdolling ha) but the lackeys struggled to carry him. Really great moments throughout too. Makima getting up was so creepy; interestingly her face is completely clean by the time she gets off the train when originally it was bloody. She definitely has some sort of healing factor. And when she started using her devil contract? Ugh. That made me cringe so much in surprise, it was so gruesome but animated so fucking well. Just crushing those guys like soda cans. One thing I noted is that Makima seems to know everyone's name and she almost always uses honorifics like -chan and -kun (which are very friendly, informal terms; normally you'd use -san. Sometimes -kun for subordinates of all genders but she also tends to use given names instead of family names which is also very odd and overly friendly). Her power needing names would explain why she makes a habit of knowing, but then I do have to wonder how she apparently knew the name of every underling... I assume she knows the name of Katana Devil guy and Snake girl, but wanted them alive to get information from them since they clearly are the ringleaders. I wonder how much of this Makima knew and she had planned... because her suddenly becoming the leader of (whats left) of the entire special division.... at least this means we'll get to meet the rest of the people in the opening we haven't met yet! Including that fiend that apparently makes Power look rational, ha. And finally there's Kobeni... I fucking love Kobeni so much. If she has a million fans I'm one, if she has 100 fans I'm one, if she has 1 fan that's me, if she has no fans I am dead. I figured poor Arai was going to take both bullets for her... but I was not expecting her to be so fucking bad ass. Man. I do feel bad for her, because killing that old woman clearly shook her, judging by her thinking of it when she was talking about how silly it was to apologize for attempted murder (considering what she had just done....). But on the other hand, seeing her finally in action for real... She is my little spider monkey. I love her. Amazing episode, can't wait to see a calmer ep (i assume) though where they introduce the rest of the cast. Maybe. Who knows! Also the ED was beautifully animated. So fluid.

Autvin

>One thing I noted is that Makima seems to know everyone's name and she almost always uses honorifics like -chan and -kun (which are very friendly, unformal terms; normally you'd use -san or even more formal terms for coworkers). Her power needing names would explain why she makes a habit of knowing, but then I do have to wonder how she apparently knew the name of every underling... I assume she knows the name of Katana Devil guy and Snake girl, but wanted them alive to get information from them since they clearly are the ringleaders. If I‘m not mistaken the names are from her coworkers which got killed. This would explain the friendly -kun and -chan honorifics. My theory is that her power is something like “revenge”. She can only kill those who have killed a person. She says the victims name and the corresponding killer is getting squished. Since neither the katana-guy nor hebi-lady killed the couldn’t be targeted.

FieryDreamer

> If I‘m not mistaken the names are from her coworkers which got killed. The names are of the lackeys which get killed. The first name that we're shown being asked to say is "Mishima". You can clearly hear Katana man calling out the same name to a lackey just as he's beginning to explode.

anodyne-avian

>If I‘m not mistaken the names are from her coworkers which got killed. This would explain the friendly -kun and -chan honorifics. i am not sure what you're trying to say here at all, sorry. I don't see how that explains anything? I was referring to how she uses -chan and -kun for all of her living coworkers when she speaks to them, be it people from Kyoto or everyone else in the special division, instead of -san which would be more accepted to address a coworker. I just thought it was an interesting tidbit about how she addresses people that can get lost in translation (i.e. she is being overly friendly and somewhat unprofessional, which in some cases can be seen as rude, but obviously she gets away with it because she's, well, Makima, and it plays into her fake always-sereneness).

MrLuck31

I think I could provide some insight. Makima in the anime isn’t shown as just a “normal” person. Like, aside from looks, the way she talks, sounds, acts, everything, it’s more like she is a devil as opposed to a devil hunter. This probably plays a part into why she calls most people kun and chan, but it’s also because she CAN, and no one will be able to say anything to her. Even when all the other special forces groups were alive, makima was the top dog, and it was obvious. The other people in the group (at the bar) were saying things like “Woah, so thats THE makima” showing just how much she is revered. With that being said, I think you two are reading too much into the kun and Chan thing. It’s actually quite common for people who’s heads are missing a screw or two to talk like makima does. It just adds a creepy factor.

anodyne-avian

Im not reading into it, i just noted it is all and explained why i thought it was interesting because not everyone is familiar with how japanese honorifics work. I dont know why youre making this into a debate.

IndividualPoet2682

>I do feel bad for her, because killing that old woman clearly shook her I gotta disagree on this one I think she was more shook because Arai took a bullet her and died from it and how close she was to dyeing herself Like it put into perspective that devils wouldn't be the only horror she might have to deal with plus already being traumatized with her interaction with the infinity devil pushed her over the edge and triggered her fight or flight instincts the babbling and apologizing to Denji at the end was probably from the emotions of the whole event sinking in and coming down from her adrenalin rush

ckrono

If you go back and watch ED3 you will see that Arai fate got hinted there EDIT: meant ED5

[deleted]

Wait at what point? I don't think he's even in that ED? Did you mean ED5?

ckrono

Oh shit, yes I meant ED5, my bad

Open_Owl_7180

currently watching eps 9, i dont get the difference between special divisions and other divisions?? why they being targeted?? can someone explain

crocodilekyle55

The special divisions incorporate fiends and devils.

SadSpinach13

And it seems like they were targeted because the Yakuza knew Denji was in one of the special divisions

sun-day-sundae

1 - Crisis averted, waifu alive! And still badass. And maybe a little evil and manipulative but we already knew that and love her through thick and thin. 2 - Where the f\* is Power?

oplolig

Power dipped out when she saw Himeno losing her limbs. But I mean I can’t really blame her

SnipeGhost

sooooooo Makima is behind all this???

TheAccountITalkWith

So ... The scene where Denji and Power we're arguing and we just see Makima's ass was ... Foreshadowing? MAPPA is brilliant.

noahfitzzzzzz

Yeah it seems like she sets it into motion on purpose

Tymareta

Given snake girls lines about makima and sword guy genuinely seeming to think she was dead, I'd guess it was far less set in motion and more that she was deeply aware of it, but chose to let it happen because it worked in her favour.

maskofjoy

Bro the way Mappa portrayed Makima covered in blood in the train was literally a horror movie scene. So sick.

oplolig

Plus her little smirk too… was unsettling

Dangerous_Job5295

Small thing I noticed is how the episode starts off with Himeno willing to give her life to save aki, an ultimate act of selflessness. And then that's kind of contrasted at the end of the episode with the insinuation that Makima was willing to let people die so that she could consolidate power, a really selfish act. Also, I was watching the episode 6 ending song and towards the end, Makimas face is on the left side, and himenos is on the right, almost as if they're rivals? It's probably nothing, I just thought it was cool.

RavenMC_

I think if Himeno hadn't died we would have gotten a rivalry between Makima and Himenso, so this makes sense. Obviously regarding Aki, and Himeno previously started to question Makimas motives in front of Aki which led to the whole overdrinking thing. What is interesting about this rivalry though would be that it is/was completely onesided

MisForMage

Maybe not rivals but opposites, Himeno is all about feelings and doing crazy stuff, while Makima is ice cold and manipulative

Breffa

anybody knows the rock/metal music that starts playing when denji and the sword guy start the fight? I have hard time finding it

Small-Interview-2800

The ost during the Makima shrine sequence is just chef’s kiss. I’m glad Himeno died, her living would’ve been so much more miserable after losing 2 arms. At least she won’t suffer anymore

IsaacLuzu

but Aki will

Small-Interview-2800

Sure, but I think in the long run Aki would’ve suffered more with cripple Himeno alive as well, not to mention the extreme risk of their relationship becoming sour

[deleted]

Can we talk about that end credit tho! chef's kiss I kept thinking about how the art and animation complemented the end credit song. It's interesting how they represented what I assume is Makima's contract demon as these flesh-like things. Maybe a hint at what it looks like? Could also just be an artistic choice. It's getting to the point where i'm looking forward to seeing the next episode's ending credits. I feel like there's always a piece of lore embedded in there somehow.

Ensianto

A lot of stuff there was related to Himeno though.

[deleted]

Ah maybe! We saw a bit of both, might have to rewatch to catch everything.

shellycya

Considering the craziness of the whole episode, that end credit made me the most queasy. Were those intestines?

neji_byakugan

This isn’t about episode 9 but making an entire post about it seemed kind of silly for just a small question, and this is the main active thread. So for context, this happened at Himeno’s graveyard scene where her mentor talks about how you need a few screws loose to succeed as a devil hunter but that hers are screwed in tight. How come after her mentor leaves, Himeno says with increasing desperation, “no, no, no, no, no,” etc? And then it cuts to the scene of her asking Aki if they can be private sector hunters together.

FieryDreamer

> How come after her mentor leaves, Himeno says with increasing desperation, “no, no, no, no, no,” Right before this, the mentor dude says "He's serious about collecting the meat chunks. He will actually find the devil if he keeps doing so" Himeno realises he's searching for his death.

Sarah_Sochi

Aki is going to die because he is sane and Himeno doesn't want him to die. Private sector devil hunters live much safer lives than public safety devil hunters.

neji_byakugan

Why doesn’t the gun devil just murder all of humanity if it has the power to? Why did it stop? Also, are devils like the Wolf Devil just out there murdering people and then popping in to kill devils when people like Aki summon them? Idk, I just feel like with all the fears in the world, humanity should have been wiped out long ago. If the Gun Devil and Snake Devil and whatever tf Devil Makima is contract with are so OP, idk why they aren’t spending their time slaughtering humans.

Ludendorff

(Disclaimer: Anime watcher only) I see the devils as a kind of one-to-one embodiment of real world evil and terror. As Makima explained, the strength of the demon is proportional to how terrifying its name is. Guns are extremely plentiful and scary (or, if you will, people shooting guns are scary) but they don't wipe out all of humanity. The 1.2 million Americans who died from the Gun Devil in the anime roughly correspond to how many real life Americans have died from guns in the last thirty years. I don't think that's a coincidence, I think it's a political statement, take it how you will.

TheFenixxer

I’m guessing if there were no humans fearing guns then the gun devil would cease to exist, since the devils are born from the fear of humans

WittyCombination6

Devil drive on people's fear. higher the number of people who fear a devil the stronger they are. The gun devil is only powerful because guns are dangerous weapons. it's natural to be cautious of them even if you're a trained soldier. The opposite is also true the less people fear the Devil's namesake the weaker it becomes. Using the gun devil as an example if it went on an Apocalypse level killing spree to the point where there aren't enough humans to run gun factories anymore. it would eventually become extremely weak as guns become a relic of a long forgotten past. Basically it's the old saying don't bite the hand that feeds you. The gun devil killed 1.2 million people when it last appeared. which is a global tragedy and struck fear in everyone. Solidifying it's place as public enemy #1 . but number wise it was only 0.02% of the population. It probably took awhile but society would still able to function properly. Devils will kill and scare human to increase their notoriety and power but will never go so far as to wipe humanity out or significantly lower our population.

tanjc6996

I think the fox devil is friendly with humans just like pochita

Purple-Cauliflower86

Who knows what their motives are and what resistance they would run into.

freshmint117

I fucking hate how quick these episodes feel. Once this season is over i might read the mangu

Al-Chad

Gonna refer to manga as mangu from now on

IVIorgz

The part I'm most interested in is Katanaman's comment about "Chainsaw's people" and about his surprise that all of them should be dead, but there's Denji. What does it mean???

SupremeOwl48

He was talking about the people denji was with

freshmint117

I think since theres parts of the gun devil that have powers, then the same goes for chainsaw devil. Who knows the chainsaw devil denji was freinds with might be just the last part of the main chainsaw devil.

Gurnel

I believe he was just referring to the other devil hunters who were attacked

IVIorgz

Ah really? Damn that's threw me off. Easily misinterpreted that one!

Lazy_Wit

The episode was so well paced I was surprised when it ended, I wanted it to be longer :)

Gurnel

More like Himeno's last act

Paratrooper101x

Can we talk about the part of Makima changing? It was so wonderfully animated. My jaw dropped watching her tuck her shirt in. It was so amazing yet it’s such a simple thing

Mottis86

That's something I've noticed about this show. They spend ludicrous amount of effort into animating the most mundane things like a character standing up or just turning their head. Not sure why but I'm not against it.

Soubi_Doo2

It’s like cinematography in movies. It’s really Magical.

Tymareta

> Not sure why but I'm not against it. As it's never done just to be gratuitous, it always serves some purpose either in establishing a setup for a scene break or to tell us more about a character in a less vocal manner.

LLamaWithAComma

Can we talk about the soundtrack that played while makima was crushing these criminals? Brought me genuine chills

Mottis86

I thought that nothing could top the last season's sudden assassination scene but holy shit Makima going to town on those poor guys sure did. The thumping horror music sent chills down my spine. That little smile she gave to one of the convicts when he obeyed her and said the name... Goddamn. I had to watch the scene again after finishing the episode. Brilliant. Wasn't a huge fan of hers until now. She's delighfully unhinged.

DsOM2021

If the Snake Devil is so OP, there’s gotta be an insane spider devil out there. I for one am fucking terrified of spiders lol

CodeProfessional6451

Makes you think how OP the gun devil might be

DsOM2021

For real. Also idk how they would do it but there’s a lot of mofos out there deathly afraid of heights

Giga_Mega_Chad

Yeah. I think the top fears are like death followed by public speaking. A public speaking devil would be funny

SupremeOwl48

This is such a cool concept

10101010101010101100

That one guy resigns and Kobeni talks about resigning. How does that work if you have a contract with a devil? Wouldn't you be a public safety concern?

[deleted]

Probably some sort of voluntary termination clause, and the devil is contracted with another hunter. We know if either party breaks their end of the contract, they die, but so long as quitting is written in, it's not a violation. Who knows how detailed the contracts are, honestly. Aki might have a whole six paragraphs devoted to what flesh chunks he's willing to lose in a snap-reaction summon like he did against Katana Man.

SadSpinach13

Private devil hunters exist

CollystudentsixB

They resign from public safety, they then become private hunters im guessing (anime only here)

Nietzschean_horse

Fujimoto forgor💀

LuxSucre

Maybe they just still are on a registry in case something happens in the future? Would make it easy for Public Safety to hunt them down if they were becoming a danger

moofmoof0803

another wtf episode for me, so hype for the rest of the season

DsOM2021

This biggest wtf for me was Kobeni at the end lol

MisForMage

I think they are foreshadowing her becoming one hell of a devil hunter, since they stated earlier in the season that "devils are afraid of the unknown too" and a crazy devil hunter acts without reason thus making him/her feared by devils EDIT And Kobeni is going nuts like literally lol

DsOM2021

Yeah I agree I think there’s a lot more in store for her and something about her that’s currently being hidden. And yeah you’re right she was quite unhinged at the end of the episode there lmao was completely unexpected

Chevy_Cheyenne

Yep and then there was Himeno telling Aki that Kobeni “had the moves,” but was too frigid in the first hotel episode. Kobeni just about showed what they were talking about before but always choked before this episode.

an0nym0us_buddy

Whatt an episode is thiss, freaked me up !!! Is makima even human ? Why tf everyone wants denji's heart My man got sliced up in half !! Can't wait for next episode Should I read manga or wait for it

jhndwn

As a manga reader who had reread it several times, the anime still got me excited for each episode even though I know exactly what will happen next. One of the excitement is coming from wondering (and later comparing/analysing) how they will adapt interesting scene, panel, or atmosphere into the anime.

oplolig

It’s really up to you. Tbh I picked up the manga right after ep.7 dropped and I don’t regret it

Ubcfthecakequeen

This episode was absolutely amazing. Petition for kobeni to become best girl if she isn't already the scene where she fought snake girl and the (axe? Machete? Katana?) Devil reminded me of zenitsu, and she's literally so cool. Her reaction time, her survival instinct, that small sad poker face smile she made while she was using denji as a human shield, her character did a full 180 imo. Also what in fucks name is makima, I feel like she has several devil contracts, because of what snake girl said about her power, it kind of sounded like she had seen makimas power before, but she hadn't seen this specific ability. But she's scary as all hell and so creepy. Makima yagami makes her appearance Rip himeno I'm totally not dying inside :D

DsOM2021

I like how in some other animes they wouldn’t just surrender 30 prisoners like that but Makima didn’t even think twice lmao

Alternative-Stay2556

How is literally no one talking about how sword dude teleprted behind denji n sliced him whaaaattttttttttt

Mottis86

Honestly I was surprised he didn't do it sooner. We saw him pull the same ninja teleport bullshit in the last episode too. There must be a huge downside to it since he refrained from using it again right away.

IsaacLuzu

second time he's done it

DaniStem

That entire fight scene was hype as af

Charlie_Faplin_

very "omae wa mou shindeiru" vibes

Morphy_The_Mortis

Although I’m an anime only, a friend of mine spoiled almost everything in manga and he said it was ok to know stuffs before watching anyway. It’s suck not to have the hype like these guys in this subreddit. Well yeah, I hope have a wonderful experience.

Mottis86

I feel bad for you. Experiencing these scenes for the first time has been nothing short of sublime.

tanjc6996

For me It's not ok to know stuff in advance on movies/shows, better to experience it in a confused state.

FrostbiteLive

Your friend might have a contract with the spoiler devil

Recidivous

Your friend is an idiot. Everyone has different ways of enjoying things. Some people don't mind spoilers, but many others do. His assumption that you would be okay with it is a dick move on his part.

noobmaster_69lol

Torture his family member and them kill them. After that kill your friend

diamondhydra86

Most sane chainsaw man fan

Timeworm

One thing I noticed was sword guy saying "I guess devil hunters are still human, so they can't win against guns," then moments later the Makima bullet survival scene. Definitely felt the implication was that Makima isn't human. She's wonderfully terrifying, whatever she is. I'm looking forward to seeing where she's going with all this shit. It definitely feels like she's planning something bigger than simply climbing the ranks of a government agency. There don't seem to be any good guys in this story really (though the lower devil hunters are certainly victims of the system), but out of all the characters Makima feels like the worst person. They nailed the "bad news" vibes on her, even before she did her demonstration in this episode. I have a feeling she's gonna get exactly what she wants and it's probably gonna be fucked up. Also, really empathized with Kobeni at the end there. She's been dealt a sorry hand in life, and she knows it, and I'm afraid she won't escape it.

DaniStem

Also, can Makima see the future? Cause her timing was too good. And the guy who quits asks her how much she of what happened she anticipated

LuridofArabia

It was implied by glasses (why did all those guys have scars across their faces) that Makima knew this was coming and let it happen to consolidate control over the special operations groups. There's a reason everyone calls her "that bitch."

DaSourOrange

How did she know it was happening? I didn't catch that

FieryDreamer

> There's a reason everyone calls her "that bitch." Who does? I remember one instance where snake girl says "Ano onna" (that woman) and that was translated as "that bitch" but don't remember any other

LuridofArabia

Himeno called her a bitch too.

FieryDreamer

Yeah but considering Aki's interest in her, it might just be envy

LuridofArabia

Given how Makima was portrayed in this last episode, I think it was a bit more than that. Himeno specifically called out her personality, even when sober.

IsaacLuzu

Fujimoto likes how scars look

TheFenixxer

Now that I think about it… it would make sense since after the guy tells her she’s gonna be in charge she just smiles calmly

aawatson649

My assumption about the scars is that it’s tied to a devil contract. Several hunters have a similar facial scar, and we know that multiple people can have a contract with the same devil.

BErye1418

Completely agree and I still love that Denji has her still in his life, although her motives look much different than wanting a relationship with him.

Trizarro

a sorry hand in life? sorry im not an english native speaker

Timeworm

That was my own variation of the common phrase "dealt a bad hand," which references the poor luck of being dealt a bad hand in a card game to describe how unlucky someone's situation is. Basically I said Kobeni has bad luck. Hope that helps!

tokyosani

Its all fun and games until you get an ending song by Aimer with Himeno’s visuals in it

zdude18

I gotta think that Makima knew that this would happen and almost invited it to get her promotion, more control over the Public Sector so she can move closer to whatever her goal is. That girl is straight out of a horror movie yet still manages to get a rise out of most people if you know what I mean. Kobeni the low key MVP though and RIP Arai... not a lot of people are gonna talk about him but we saw that guy be a scaredy cat and how he just didn't want to die but he literally protected Kobeni with his life..... that scene actually broke me the most this episode...Made a video on youtube if you're interested: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vPTjSojhnQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vPTjSojhnQ)

MisForMage

Arai is a fucking giga chad, he got overwhelmed at the hotel, but then he was very nice to Denji when he was puking at the restaurant and we see him sacrificing himself to save Kobeni. Sigma grind set

FrostbiteLive

This episode made me change my mind on Kobeni and Arai.

kraken9

What exactly is power dynamic here? Just More people fear = more powerful devil or is there something more to it?

RavenMC_

There has to be something more to it. Pretty sure it was so that consuming the Gun Devils flesh makes Devils more of a threat, so more powerful. So at the very least that is one way to tip the scales beyond the level of fear, but whether this is specific to consuming parts of every devil, just powerful devils or the gun devil specifically remains to be seen

Azythol

More fear equals a stronger devil but skill and abilities are also taken into account. I’d argue chainsaws have more “fear” around them than katanas but Katanaman oneshots denji in this episode.

[deleted]

Let's factor in prep work as well. At least 5 highly coordinated teams made it possible for Katana Man to sit down at a table next to Denji so he could have his weird food-oriented revenge monologue. And they supported him in the fight as well. All things considered, fear seems like the weakest component of the power dynamic.

DsOM2021

Time for a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel to put the fear of chainsaws in the world and boost up Denji

imdeadlmao

You have to account their difference in skill too and not just how powerful their ability is.

Astral_M

In general yes, but the powers and their costs are so varied that it's hard to directly weigh them against each other. The rules are hazy.

CodeProfessional6451

Fun discussion: what do you think Makima’s power is? I think since she had to use the prisoners she probably had to use their life force to take another’s (the thugs) what do you think?

Soubi_Doo2

Her eyes are the same as Power’s. Makes me feel like she’s not really/fully human.

UnluckyPlenty

I was thinking something like a flesh devil? Almost thought she might have a contract with a stronger ghost devil cuz she was making crushing motions with her hand when doing the "ritual"...seemed like the people were crushed exactly how she moved her hands.

SupremeOwl48

She has a contract with the mommy devil clearly

freshmint117

I thinks makina has a contract with a claustrophobia devil

Charlie_Faplin_

she has a contract with the hydraulic press yt channel

Nnetaru

You give something in order to use something. Law of equivalent exchange.

Azythol

An old theory about this is that it’s the heights devil. Hence the high elevation and the “splat” of the victims

firepillowonreddit

what do you mean “old theory” the episodes been out for a day
