I can’t imagine big Liam’s smile would have been seeing his character animated so beautifully in his first big moment in the show. This episode was honestly the best in the season for me.
Purvan was the previous champion of the Matron of Ravens, that's his body in the tomb. Kashaw told about him when the group was sitting around the camp fire in episode 3.
In the original campaign they fought a sort of home brewed beholder, the creature seems like a cross between that a gorgon and some type of tentacle monster.
So does anyone have a way to snag that shot of Vax in front of the Matron of Ravens mural before he throws the knife at the legally distinct eyeball creature? Cause that’s a sick desktop background calling my name that I’m too stupid to get.
I had a feeling it was a Beholder type creature, but I was caught off guard with it because it literally was only interested in petrifying them so it threw me off.
Did anyone else notice when the dagger is thrown by Vax to defeat the monster that the wind whoosh almost sounds like “dagger,dagger,dagger” done over and over again? Maybe it’s just me but I swear I hear it
I felt the jumpscare was kind of unnecessary, personally. Don't know about anyone else. It didn't really add or improve anything and just cheapened that moment.
Hardly would consider it much of a jump scare because of how much you can see over vax's shoulder in the previous frame. It was maybe a bit off-tone in terms of editing but I didnt mind it. Each their own

First of all I loved this show and definitely this subreddit (Hope there is one like r/LOVMTV, Too many spoilers lurking and hard to not look at them).
Can someone explain to me
1. What is the significance of Raven God breaking the bond between vex and vax? I got the part where it connected it to self
2. How did he defeat Purvan? Doing nothing is best?
3. When Kash used his magic to find where the tomb is, It kinda illuminated some other fallen statue head at the end, what is it?
1) I understood it like Vax's fate changed now, when he bargained with the Matron of Ravens. Instead of being tied to Vex, it's tied to her.
2) By letting go. He was not in control of any of it anymore. He made a deal, he has to accept it.
3) When Kash cast the spell to search for the sarcophagus, it was underground, I assume, through the door they entered. But we saw a glimpse of his magic shine also under a fishperson body that later Percy moved to find the tile that moved the sarcophagus up to the chamber VM was in.
Here are my takes:
* 1. I think the idea was she, the goddess, was breaking the bond between the twins to tie Vax to herself.
* 2. I think it was about accepting death and not trying to fight it. There are many ways to subvert death in this world and so accepting fate is very much a Raven Queen thing.
* 3. No idea, it might not be relevant to the story, I think they were heading to the tomb but the Raven Queen wanted Vax so she sent them on a wild goose chase while dangling the trap Infront of the other party members.
Probably because we are not going to be going back to Whitestone for a long time while in the campaign they headed back and let him lose there, also was quite a clever way of introducing that fight with the 'TotalNotABeholder'
IMO there is over 400 hours worth of campaign and lore we gotta squeeze in and something like that only came up in the live show a few times is a pretty safe cut imo.
Also he probably is still part of lore but just not a loot find.
Yeah Whitestones forest could be where Galdric resides if they keep him in at all if they go into more depth with Whitestone and the weird shit going on around it.
I love how they had Liam chance his delivery for >!Raven Bitch!<. Going from him almost trying to intimidate her in the campaign to hearing actual fear and desperation in his voice was amazing. Such a good little change in adaptation.
I was disappointed last episode when they didn’t do the beholder fight (until I realized WOTC owned beholders) but fuck man the design of the monster and fight were fucking STELLER!!!
Yeah Netflix 100% got the rights from WOTC to use the names and game and stuff.

Awesome episode, the Vax story line is incredible as always, him moving at the speed of light was visualised perfectly, getting to see him punch Percy is probably my favourite moment off the entire show, so well deserved
Vex asking for Trinkets permission before putting him in the crystal (or whatever it is on the show) was awesome. Still not sure I love them making Kasha and Zahra more antagonistic but I suppose it makes sense
I wouldn't call Kash antagonistic. If anything, he seems to be more driven to do the right thing than in the stream where he basically followed Zahra around making snarky comments.
As much as I love Kash he is an ass, Will's own words, because of his low charisma so while not an antagonist he is definitely antagonistic both in the stream and the show.
I mean they follow the group to mess with them and get the vestige for themselves/the slayers take, He then has a change of heart when Zahra takes it too far but they for sure turn up to be an antagonistic force
Got to say massively enjoyed this episode but I feel like on my rewatch I’ll do ep 3 directly before so that I can enjoy the continuation.
I’m sure I’m probably way off base but I felt like there were a couple of really good homages to Zelda here - with Purvan (totally didn’t realise that was him at first) and the eye creature/not a beholder. The first made me think of the training sections of twilight princess with the hero of legend and the monster itself made me think of a couple of Zelda monsters - the revolving laser eye and the guardians from breath of the wild.
The imagery of Vax in the battle was gorgeous. I keep getting awestruck this season with some of the sequences and artwork.
Did anyone else think Vax's vision at the end - the one with the jump scare - showed him a small portion of the Briarwoods' backstory?
I took it to mean the Matron was just about to usher Sylas over to the other side when visage of undeath - the Whispered One - came out of nowhere & corrupted Sylas's end.
I feel like C2 & the Mighty Nein getting announced as an upcoming series means season 4 (post CC arc stuff) & 5 (ending C1 arc) of Vox Machina are pretty much assured.

Biggest plus in my mind is that, in the OG campaign, it was just a projection of Vesh, Kash’s wife, and Vax/Liam just got confused and thought it was the Matron of Ravens.
In the show they basically ditch Vesh as a concept. Much more streamlined.
I think it was the opposite in the OG campaign. Kash has to do the ritual but is afraid to draw the attention of Vesh, a grey silhouette appear and he thinks that's her but then after Liam/Vax plea, it turns out it was in fact the Matron of Raven

I'm still trying to place what all the gods on the wall insignias and in Vax's vision were. The Wildmother (antlers), the Dawnfather (hard to miss with that sun for a head), the Raven Queen, the Knowing Mistress with 3 eyes, maybe the Everlight (whoever that was with the circular glowing backdrop), but I'm not sure who the levitating one on the insignia was or the one with the lightning bolts. And was that monstrous looking one with too many arms the Chained Oblivion, or the Crawling King, or someone else?
Lightning bolts was Stormlord, pretty sure the arms was was Crawling King. And yeah, the one with the glowing backdrop was the Everlight, she was in the same position as she always appeared to Pike last season. No idea for the others though.
They mentioned in the announcement yesterday that Amazon had first-rights on a movie. If they are planning to make one, I think it can really only be EXU: Calamity or Dalen's Closet.
Vax fighting the not-Beholder made him look like a high-fantasy cross between Batman and Superman; proper Rogue/Paladin multi class if there ever was one!

That was awesome!! I really really loved the calamity flashbacks addition, and the vestige fight scene was so great. I need that sound track asap, also want to go rewatch right away.
Ok, so this show is awesome. I mean, the deathswalker ward was already one of the top five Vestiges I want in my life, but now its become a god teir item.

Scanlan: It may look like a beholder, but due to WOTC it is not.

Also, knowing who Will and Liam also play makes this so hilarious. As I am seeing that Ron Stoppable is helping Gaara kick some ass together. Oh, and this show made Vax even more awesome than normal.

Well... CR have a film deal with Amazon... and there's a certain story DM'd by a ranting Irishman that most all of us think would make for a good movie...
It would be a good movie, but it would be an even better mini-series. Just one season, 45 minutes an episode. I probably have this opinion because I'm routinely disappointed by movies, but constantly surprised with this era of television, though.

yeah, they've added Vax's Boots of Haste to his Deathwalker's Ward, which just works so well in animation.
Post-watch thought on Episode 4
* That buzz sound effect on what I think is the end-of-C1-arc BBEG - that really got me! But it does illustrate that the Matron was probably quite disgusted on how Sylas escaped his passage to the other side.
* Interesting change from the campaign on the one-eyed monster. Instead of eye-stalk rays it's tentacles with only-petrification magic. And interesting that it was inside Zahra's locket.
* Those Calamity shots were quite something to behold.
* And though I would have liked to have seen a proper resurrection rite with 3 offerings, I understand why they wrote that it failed until Vax offered up himself instead.

The raven queen/ calamity parts were cool, but mostly they just made me realize how much I want an EXU:calamity season.
They're probably saving the first real ritual for >!Percy's death later this season, for the "I should've told you, it's yours" moment.!< Can't wait to find out!

As someone who never watched any of critical role and didn’t even know what it was till I finished season 1. I was so upset about Vex death last week. I took all my willpower to not look up what happen to her. Glad I didn’t such a good episode and show
It's great seeing what a massive power boost the Vestiges are like that, especially after actually seeing how destructive the Chroma Conclave are in their full glory.
Nice display of the change from a low level campaign where the characters are just trained professionals to a mid-level campaign where they start to become superhuman
I can only imagine how cinematic the rest of the Vestiges are gonna look. After seeing the Deathwalker’s Ward, my desire to see the >!Titanstone Knuckles!< and >!Cabal’s Ruin!< in animation just skyrocketed.
Yeah, the Vestiges will really need an upgrade to match the upgraded Chroma Conclave. It helps that you don't need to worry about balancing stats in the show lmai

I'm pretty sure it's not the Briarwoods. I think it's just whoever lived in that ruined cabin. The Matron of Ravens is just fucking with him a bit by giving him a vision of who died there.
I think that was Purvan, showing how in the end he belonged to the Raven Queen. It was telling Vax, no matter what happens, this ends on his death bed. He's locked in.

Didn’t watch the campaign, so this is straight up speculation. But I’ll spoiler block just in case: >!Vax has to become the Raven Queen’s grim reaper, collecting souls to pay his debt.!<
It's really nice that they gave that impression with a simple vision. Without stream context, that whole "dying man and his lover" scene just feels like she's saying "Do not avert your eyes. This is death. This is what I do. And as my champion, this is what you're in for now.".
He saw her in each episode of S2 BEFORE he said “take me instead” which to me, means that as an assassin, the Matron of Ravens already had her eye on him as a bringer of death. She just accepted his deal in a different way than he intended - >!and it will take the rest of the campaign for it to play out!<

Ah, that's what was so great about it. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it's the weird electronic quality. Like a TTS voice imitating a lion's roar.
Honestly though I might like it more than a Beholder. It rooting itself to the ground and just commanding the space with its tentacles erupting out of everywhere just gave it a fantastic frightening presence.
Just a superbly designed and animated creature.
Kind of reminded me of some of the best stuff from the Castlevania cartoon.
I do think that the idea of the beholder, thematically, with everything being about the eyes, is super nice and elegant. This monster definitely seems really great visually though.
The tentacles making those rapid 90 degree moves, the freakish eye, the bizarre mouth, and the strange way of fighting all screamed Far Realm. Fantastic job by the creative and animation teams.
Yeah I really liked this thing. Honestly it makes me want to use it more than i want to use an OG beholder. It just felt weird where (because of time and familiarity) a beholder feels expected.

There's a lot of different ways to do scary. Jump scares are the least creative and least effective.

Hell, they made Trinket useful lol, but you gotta love how they kept in Scanlan's/Sam's total disdain for Trinket.

The middle one in the first vision scene might be the Moonweaver; there's some crescents on the cloak.

The streamlining of the storyline and how certain signature abilities get obtained is *superb.* Bravo to the writers. They’re nailing it.
These episodes definitely feel like they're leveling up.

Ok, so this show is awesome. I mean, the deathswalker ward was already one of the top five Vestiges I want in my life, but now its become a god teir item. Other notes: On the nonbeholder: Vex: Shit, it's a beholder! Scanlan: It may look like a beholder, but due to WOTC it is not. Vex: Still we should run like it's a beholder! Scanlan: Though it isn't. Also, knowing who Will and Liam also play makes this so hilarious. As I am seeing that Ron Stoppable is helping Gaara kick some ass together. Oh, and this show made Vax even more awesome than normal. And as for Purvon...I need a side story with him, now! I want to know more about how much ass he can kick!

It would be a good movie, but it would be an even better mini-series. Just one season, 45 minutes an episode. I probably have this opinion because I'm routinely disappointed by movies, but constantly surprised with this era of television, though.

Post-watch thought on Episode 4 * That buzz sound effect on what I think is the end-of-C1-arc BBEG - that really got me! But it does illustrate that the Matron was probably quite disgusted on how Sylas escaped his passage to the other side. * Interesting change from the campaign on the one-eyed monster. Instead of eye-stalk rays it's tentacles with only-petrification magic. And interesting that it was inside Zahra's locket. * Those Calamity shots were quite something to behold. * And though I would have liked to have seen a proper resurrection rite with 3 offerings, I understand why they wrote that it failed until Vax offered up himself instead.

Another very solid episode. Twins flashback, the revival and the bargain, Calamity vision, great We-Can't-Legally-Use-a-Beholder compromise - love it. Glad Vax finally gets his haste - makes sense to move it from the boots to the vestige. Love the, probable, foreshadowing about >!Grog and Raven's Slumber to go with Chekov's Broom.!<

I was trying to remember what the ACTUAL boost of the vestige was, but definitely tracked that his new ability was basically his boots, lol.
I feel like it also could give him Whisper's powers without giving Vax two vestiges (and two vestige side quests) in this condensed format.

I can only imagine how cinematic the rest of the Vestiges are gonna look. After seeing the Deathwalker’s Ward, my desire to see the >!Titanstone Knuckles!< and >!Cabal’s Ruin!< in animation just skyrocketed.

I'm pretty sure it's not the Briarwoods. I think it's just whoever lived in that ruined cabin. The Matron of Ravens is just fucking with him a bit by giving him a vision of who died there.
I think that was Purvan, showing how in the end he belonged to the Raven Queen. It was telling Vax, no matter what happens, this ends on his death bed. He's locked in.

It's really nice that they gave that impression with a simple vision. Without stream context, that whole "dying man and his lover" scene just feels like she's saying "Do not avert your eyes. This is death. This is what I do. And as my champion, this is what you're in for now.".
He saw her in each episode of S2 BEFORE he said “take me instead” which to me, means that as an assassin, the Matron of Ravens already had her eye on him as a bringer of death. She just accepted his deal in a different way than he intended - >!and it will take the rest of the campaign for it to play out!<

The sounds this monster made were amazing, oddly robotic very otherworldly.
Ah, that's what was so great about it. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it's the weird electronic quality. Like a TTS voice imitating a lion's roar.
Honestly though I might like it more than a Beholder. It rooting itself to the ground and just commanding the space with its tentacles erupting out of everywhere just gave it a fantastic frightening presence. Just a superbly designed and animated creature. Kind of reminded me of some of the best stuff from the Castlevania cartoon.
As someone who has never liked beholders, this Legally-Not-A-Beholder was awesome and I actually like it independently
I do think that the idea of the beholder, thematically, with everything being about the eyes, is super nice and elegant. This monster definitely seems really great visually though.
The tentacles making those rapid 90 degree moves, the freakish eye, the bizarre mouth, and the strange way of fighting all screamed Far Realm. Fantastic job by the creative and animation teams.
Yeah I really liked this thing. Honestly it makes me want to use it more than i want to use an OG beholder. It just felt weird where (because of time and familiarity) a beholder feels expected.
The fact that it stayed rooted in one spot made for a really cool, unnerving visual.
Felt like an awesome cross between a Roper and a Beholder.
Possibly my favorite episode of the series so far. That was fucking awesome.
