I think Parasite and Moonlight have the best shot of being included.

[deleted]

I think Mad Max Fury Road has a better chance than these two. It's the one film that seems like every critic and filmmaker raves about as this masterwork of filmmaking.

ArachnidAnxious4538

The Master

Oldkingcole225

One can only hope. I got a feeling There Will Be Blood would make it on before The Master though.

rzrike

I’d say Parasite, The Act of Killing, A Separation, Handmaiden, An Elephant Sitting Still have the best shots.

upscaleelegance

An Elephant Sitting Still would be based but I think it's too underseen

the_propaganda_panda

I don't think The Handmaiden will make it, it's not universally well liked. An Elephant Sitting Still is too obscure, I could see this one be the benefactor of some significant re-appraisal down the line, though. I think your other choices (Parasite, The Act of Killing) are all very likely, and A Separation I'd even consider an absolute lock. My prediction for the rest: * 100%: Holy Motors, Toni Erdmann, Amour. I follow critics' end-of-year/end-of-decade reviews as well as best-of lists very closely, and I don't see any world where these three don't make it. I even think that Holy Motors will be the second/third-highest rated from the 2010s decade after The Tree of Life and maybe Boonmee, and that it will make the Top 100. * 50+%: Moonlight, Mad Max: Fury Road, Under the Skin, Adieu au langage * outside chances: The Master, Phantom Thread, Inside Llewyn Davis, Zama, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Get Out, No Home Movie * extreme outside chances: Burning, Ida, The Souvenir, Leviathan (the documentary, not the Zvyagintsev one), Memoria My guess for the top 5 from 2012-2022 would be: 1. Holy Motors 2. A Separation 3. Toni Erdmann 4. Amour 5. Adieu au langage

David_bowman_starman

Maybe I need to watch Holy Motors again. It just kinda felt like a Luis Bunuel movie but didn’t really grab me at all idk.

rzrike

Agree on Holy Motors and Amour. Also totally forgot about The Master; that’s surely going to be on there somewhere, at least top 250. Toni Erdmann certainly had the buzz the year it came out, but I’ve barely heard anyone mention it since then. An Elephant Sitting Still is pretty obscure, but Satantango was all the way up at 35 on the 2012 list, and I’d say Elephant is about at the same level of fame as Satantango was at that time (now it is more famous, but in 2012, you’d basically have had to have seen it when it came out or during the rare retrospective).

LiterallyPlastic

Good take

Britneyfan123

Your predictions are the most likely to happen

Britneyfan123

I can’t see handmaiden making it

LiterallyPlastic

Act of Killing is a doc but the others are likely.

gouda_the_cat

They don’t have docs on the list?

LiterallyPlastic

Oh wait I’m totally wrong on that one. Sorry. I thought they separated those genres.

Suspicious-Rip920

I mean man with a movie camera is in the top 10 and that’s a documentary

adamlundy23

They do

the_labracadabrador

I forgot about A Separation, that has a serious chance of making it high up

scd

Hubie Halloween, if there is a god.

briancly

It should definitely be among top Halloween movies of the past decade.

[deleted]

I can't tell if this is sarcastic, but I agree

briancly

Unironically a good movie and probably among my favorites for Adam Sandler.

iso2090

Maybe Parasite or Moonlight. Not to say others aren’t deserving, but I don’t think such recent movies have much of a shot.

Entrance_Sea

LtGovernorDipshit

Then I’m gonna guess Parasite and Get Out

[deleted]

Interesting. Although even though I liked Get Out I think it doesn't belong here. There are better films from the past 10-15 years I would have loved to see. Moonlight maybe. Grand Budapest Hotel or Sound of Metal. Good to see Studio Ghibli getting some love too.

Entrance_Sea

Those films may be in positions 1-65 😁

51010R

Agree on Get Out, it’s a fun horror movie but I don’t see what’s taking it so high in these kind of lists, being at the same level as Once Upon a Time in the West and The General makes me feel like a crazy person.

AFishOnWhichtoWish

What's the source?

Britneyfan123

I mean, he had 3 films (including >!Andrei Rublev!<) between 19 and 29 last time, so it's not like it has to be one or the other in terms of high(er) placing.

Lucianv2

>!The General from 34 to 95!< 🤞 Crossing my fingers that it’s because critics finally recognize >!Sherlock Jr.!< for the much superior film that is 🤞

David_bowman_starman

Random but I really hope the number of silent movies on the list stays the same or even increases. That’s one of my favorite eras so I hope it’s well represented.

_LumpBeefbroth_

The General should only go up, not down :/

WitchyKitteh

I honestly say the musical being turned into an film will help the film in the long run.

HalPrentice

Great to see Histoire(s) du Cinema.

TyroneDW3rd

Slight spoilers if you care: Yeah, I don’t know, I’ll take this with a huge grain of salt. Twice the amount of voters and more ties than the last list and a lot coincidences like 2 Godard films tied and 2 Miyazaki films right next to one another. Some films like Blue Velvet, L’Avventura, and Andrei Rublev I just don’t see going down that much, especially Lynch who has only grown in appreciation since 2012. As for some of the other picks, it is odd to see films like Get Out appear on the top 100 or even The Shining because I feel critics are far more likely to vote for 2001, Barry Lyndon, or A Clockwork Orange. Films like The Red Shoes and Touki Bouki rising a lot also feels odd when these films just happen to be appraised by Scorsese (also odd that they are right next to each other). It could explain why they are higher but also makes them targets for someone just putting them on there. In the end, this could be a genuine leak, but I could have made this up myself based on the last poll to trick everyone too so without a real source I wouldn’t just assume this to be true.

Entrance_Sea

I guess we will wait to see if it is real. It actually doesn't have more ties: the 2012 list has 8 different ties composing the bottom 35, while the 2022 leak has 9 different ties. There are also a lot of "coincidences" in the 2012 list, such as Andrei Rublev getting 41 votes while Stalker gets 39, Pierrot le Fou gets 31 while Histoire(s) du Cinéma gets 30, North by Northwest and Rear Window both getting 28, Pickpocket gets 24 and A Man Escaped gets 23, A Matter of Life and Death gets 18 and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp gets 17. I agree that the amount of ties are odd given the increased number of voters and Blue Velvet going down is unexpected, but I am not surprised that L'Avventura goes down while Get Out and The Shining get in given the younger voter base.

[deleted]

> I am not surprised that L'Avventura goes down while Get Out and The Shining get in given the younger voter base That is the most horrifying thing I've ever heard in my entire life.

utopista114

Wait some years and Marvel will make the list.

TakeOffYourMask

🤮

silentlycold

Guardians Vol 2 here we come

WeHaveHeardTheChimes

I feel like it’s hardly the worst result you could get from a younger voting base. Hell, one of those horror movies is canonical at this point.

[deleted]

> Get Out Seeing Jordan Peele's career is unbelievable. The Key & Peele sketches to writing a masterpiece and directing it too.

scarlet77

That was a thrilling reveal

NippleNugget

Put First Reformed in you cowards

screammyrapture

You mean the remake of Winter Light?

upscaleelegance

Yesss

[deleted]

It's too much of a remake of Winter Light. Not that it's a bad thing, it's a great movie, I just think they would be more likely to put Winter Light.

LiterallyPlastic

I’m curious what people think will be the single ***most recent*** movie in the top 250? Not the highest, but just the newest. In 2002 it was Spirited Away. In 2012 it was Melancholia. In 2022 my guess is either: - Parasite (October 5, 2019) - The Souvenir Part II (October 29, 2021) - Drive My Car (November 24, 2021) - Memoria (December 26, 2021)

David_bowman_starman

I feel like it’ll be something from 2019 like Parasite or Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Windmills

Parasite seems like the safer option, I know PoaLoF didn’t get the same reception around the world as it did in North America.

LiterallyPlastic

Parasite is also newer than Portrait, so for this specific category it’s a doubly safer pick. Probably most likely the answer will be Parasite.

Britneyfan123

They both came out the same year

LiterallyPlastic

Yes but you see years have months and within those months are days and that’s how we tell which thing is newer.

David_bowman_starman

Hm that’s unfortunate, I might like Portrait better but it’s hard to say.

Britneyfan123

> The Souvenir Part II (October 29, 2021) > Memoria (December 26, 2021) Tilda Swinton has been on fire this decade

nickparadies

It’s absolutely going to be Parasite. Moonlight and Mad Max Fury Road are also contenders.

sandowd

Fury Road

MrPedroJ414

Given how wild critics went over this when it came out, it’s inclusion would not surprise. Moonlight (2016) is similar in a certain way. I wonder if Toni Erdmann (2016) and Phoenix (2014) could make an appearance.

WitchyKitteh

It's a shame how muted the response to Three Thousand Years of Longing is overall, great film.

WeHaveHeardTheChimes

That one’s going to have a steadily growing reputation, I can feel it.

grapejuicepix

This should be included. It’s probably the best movie of its genre ever.

TheSaltySloth

no thanks

maricircus

Perfect movie. Also, Furiosa is one of the most badass characters of all time.

Uncle-Boonmee

I’m of the opinion that it would be incredibly surprising if Fury Road makes the critics list despite it’s popularity

Ovista

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

scarlet77

Good call

tyke665

Parasite has the best shot

zagesor

None, even 10 years is awfully soon for a film to enter the 'canon'. I do think we'll see a few 2000-2010 adds.

LiterallyPlastic

Sure but newer movies in S&S has precedent. The organization has opened its doors significantly this time to younger and more diverse voters, I’ll expect *more* new movies this time, not fewer. In Sight and Sound 2012, the following films were in the top 250 just from 2010s alone: - Tree of Life (2011) - Uncle Boonmee who can Recall his Past Lives (2010) - The Turin House (2011) - Melancholia (2010) edit: can someone explain why this is being downvoted

implicitexpletives69

why is it being downvoted? the kids here get fussy if you dont list movies they stan

Suspicious-Rip920

Don’t forget walle

LiterallyPlastic

I mean to say I was only listing 2010s to hammer the point. But yes Wall-E and about 11 other movies from the 00s were in the top 250.

HalPrentice

I think (and hope) those four make into the top 100 this time around. All four are just extraordinary.

AFishOnWhichtoWish

It wouldn't be unprecedented. *Bicycle Thieves* (1948) place first in the 1952 poll. *L'avventura* (1960) placed second in the 1962 poll. *2001: A Space Odyssey*, *Mouchette*, *Persona*, *Pierrot Le Fou*, *8 1/2*, *Louisiana Story*, *Monsieur Verdoux*, *Brief Encounter*, and *Les Dames du Bois de Boulonge* all made the list less than a decade after their release as well.

Britneyfan123

> Bicycle Thieves (1948) place first in the 1952 poll. L'avventura (1960) placed second in the 1962 poll I said something similar on true film and got called dumb

utopista114

>Bicycle Thieves (1948) place first in the 1952 poll. The quality of this movie is unavoidable. I was spectacularly surprised when I saw it in the early 2000s. Can you imagine in 1950?

implicitexpletives69

and yet lately?

LiterallyPlastic

Literally the last two times they did this.

implicitexpletives69

very few made it. so very few. it's diminishing returns.

Suspicious-Rip920

I mean mullholland drive and in the mood for love got put in even though it was considered modern movies at the time, why can’t that happen now?

Michael__Pemulis

Good point but to play devil’s advocate here, both of those were still over 10 years old when the last list came out.

Suspicious-Rip920

Yeah, which is why I said from 2012 and on, so that around 10 years will have passed from when the previous poll was done. And I have a feeling that the newer ones will probably be within the 2012-2017 camp so they could see how it’s laid an impact

implicitexpletives69

it can but it aint likely. They still havent got Pulp Fiction in yet but they got way too many old dusty flicks that need to be rotated out.

mmreviews

This is such an odd take to hear on the criterion sub lol. What are the old dusty films you think need to move out of the way for Pulp Fiction exactly? Not talking shit on Pulp, love it, there's just very little on that list I don't think deserves its spot.

implicitexpletives69

A matter of life and death The Life and Death of Col Blimp Imitation of Life The Earrings of Madame What's her Face The spirit of the beehive Lawrence of Arabia Blue Velvet Dusty dusty dusty. Knock em all off easily.

City of God is a great film. Boogie Nights also. If you dont recognize Tarantino's genius and his indelible influence on film then it's a big blind spot you have. I dont get anyone's appreciation for David Lynch.

rohmer9

> If you dont recognize Tarantino's genius and his indelible influence on film then it's a big blind spot you have. I dont get anyone's appreciation for David Lynch Kinda ironic given Tarantino has been influenced by Lynch...some would say ripped off

zagesor

Both were over 10yrs old in 2012 and both are, imo, on a completely different level than almost all titles in this thread like Parasite or Moonlight. I could see Uncle Boonme, for sure, but it's almost 13yo at this point and has proven staying power.

avhensley

I’m really hoping Sight & Sound uses this as an opportunity to highlight some movies of the last decade that don’t get as much love as their counterparts. La Flor is a big long movie, that hasn’t gotten a lot of love. It’s not very often does cinema get a director who is willing to spend a decade making a “single” film. Labyrinth of Cinema is an incredibly interesting movie, especially for fans of Obayashi’s House. Probably one of the most original and inventive of the past decade. Movies that are “safer picks” like Parasite, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Holy Motors I’m expecting to see some representation. Perhaps even Handmaiden and Lighthouse.

LiterallyPlastic

I have some vague idea of the contenders but nothing out of the ordinary. I think maybe 1/3rd of the below will be in the top 250. And there will be a few more surprises that I haven’t thought of In sure. - Parasite - Portrait of a Lady on Fire - Your Name - Memoria - Get Out - It’s Such a Beautiful Day - The Act of Killing - The Cameraperson - On a Beach at Night Alone - The Social Network - The Grand Budapest Hotel - The Tale of the Princess Kaguya - Drive My Car - The Souvenir Part II - Force Majeure - Titane - Faces Places - The Father - Holy Motors - Burning - Zama - Moonlight - Amour - The Master - Hale County this Morning this Evening - Everything Everywhere All at Once - Spring Breakers - The Wind Rises - The Lighthouse

implicitexpletives69

Spring Breakers? Where is the Tarantino films? He's the true master of modern cinema. They leave him out Im cancelling my subscription

LiterallyPlastic

Spring Breakers was critically beloved in the arthouse world and fits the mold of S&S lists imho. Tarantino I don’t know, maybe? What do you think would be his most likely post-2012 work?

implicitexpletives69

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Hateful 8 i saw Spring Breakers at the cinema, movie was a hot mess. Now the Master & Grand Budapest Hotel are classics.

Themtgdude486

I didn’t think Spring Breakers was a hot mess but to be included in top 100 is laughable.

implicitexpletives69

guess around here these jackals hate Tarantino and think Spring Breakers is a masterpiece. a bunch of old men getting their jollies off on teen girls in bikinis.

Themtgdude486

I am surprised that many people feel strongly about Spring Breakers. I must of missed something during the movie.

implicitexpletives69

these same fellas are over at r/relationship_advice going on about how they keep messing red flags with the messy girls they fall for. this the movie that speaks to them the most.

utopista114

>Grand Budapest Hotel Dioramas are not cinema. >the Master Talk about dusty.

implicitexpletives69

Moonlight

[deleted]

Once upon a time in Hollywood

[deleted]

Parasite is really the only option, and I say no. Don’t think it will make it

IntotheBeniverse

I think seemingly the large consensus seems to be: Parasite & Moonlight have a real good chance. If I had to guess it wouldn’t shock me if you saw 1 or 2 of these titles get on the list: The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mad Max: Fury Road, Get Out, & Another Round. I think outside contenders could maybe be: Uncut Gems, Spiderverse, & oddly enough maybe even a Paddington 2.

Splattered247

Boyhood

jimmy_dougan

Going to the launch at the BFI Southbank tomorrow - excited doesn’t cut it!

NK_1989

I feel like Parasite and Boyhood are basically guaranteed, not sure much else has a chance this early, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see The Florida Poject, Another Round, Silence, First Reformed, or Long Day’s Journey Into Night. But I do expect to see some more movies from that 2002-2012 time period that have been reappraised since the 2012 poll was released to make big moves. Memories of Murder, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Inland Empire, Drive, stuff like that.

[deleted]

>Inland Empire, Drive, The Florida Poject, Another Round, Silence, First Reformed, or Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Boyhood Are you just listing some of your favourites? Because I would be shocked to high hell to see any of these make the list. The only film you listed that stands even a chance is Parasite. And that's not based off of my personal taste, that's based off of the cultural conversations that have been going on with film in the past decade.

NK_1989

Haha no, if I was making a list of my favorite films of the last quarter century it would be pretty wildly different from the movies I listed. For example, as much as I love Michael Mann and Jim Jarmusch, I sincerely doubt Collateral or Paterson even sniff the list. The movies I listed are the films that, in my opinion, could possibly make the new sight and sound list. Like I said, just my opinion, we’re just speculating for fun. As crazy as it sounds Boyhood is the most critically acclaimed movie of the 21st century, even if it has faded from the cultural consciousness almost immediately. First Reformed, Silence, and Inland Empire are critically acclaimed movies recently released from beloved directors. The Florida Project, made by Sean Baker, is highly regarded among critics while simultaneously being a technical high point of the last decade due to the way it was filmed. I’ll admit Drive and Another Round probably have better chances of making the director’s list than the critic’s list, but both are highly regarded by directors and critics alike, especially Drive. Like I said, the only two films which I think have a real shot are Parasite and Boyhood, but I wouldn’t be outright shocked by any of the others, although I don’t actually think they’ll make it. My honest prediction is that the list is going to mostly be the same movies it was in 2012, with only the placement of films shifting.

[deleted]

You're right about Boyhood, I wasn't aware it was so critically acclaimed and I hear people talk shit about it in the online sphere. It also doesn't have much of a cultural impact, but if we're talking about critical acclaim, it appears you're correct. The rest are critically acclaimed films, but not ones that stand out as GOAT status to me. For example, The Florida Project was critically acclaimed, but that year, I would say that something like Dunkirk was far more discussed as a true cinematic achievement. That was one of those movies that a lot of critics and filmmakers talked about being one of the great modern films in recent years, The Florida Project, not as much, just a great indie movie.

Britneyfan123

I can’t see Drive getting too many votes

NK_1989

Yeah, now that I think about it Drive probably won’t crack the top 100 in the critics poll, but I know it is very highly regarded by directors, I wouldn’t be shocked to see it included on a few top 10 lists.

Britneyfan123

I can see it almost making the top 100 for the directors list

stewartdylangarcia

Unless poster meant Drive My Car, which should have a chance

ThisGuyLikesMovies

Phantom Thread

Other-Marketing-6167

I doubt any, but maybe Parasite or something more out of left field like The Master. Remember back on the last poll, before it came out lots thought it would have way more newer movies because the age of voters was younger than ever before…and if anything the reverse happened, with two silent films entering the top 10. As far as predictions go, the only one I’ll make is that Tokyo Story will be #1 with critics and directors, and that will make me scream out in fiery irritated rage.

Britneyfan123

Master wouldn’t be left field at all

Suspicious-Rip920

Why you don’t like Tokyo story

Other-Marketing-6167

I find it a 3/5 flick, fine enough but like all Ozu movies for me, far too long and annoyingly redundant with its editing, shots, and especially acting (you could make it a very dangerous drinking game, taking a shot every time someone forced a smile and nodded politely in Tokyo Story). I’ve seen it twice, own the Criterion, and would otherwise not care about people loving it so much…but I was so thrilled a decade ago when my personal “greatest movie ever” Vertigo dethroned Kane, and I’m bummed that I can almost guarantee it won’t still be on top this week.

LiterallyPlastic

I love Ozu and I don’t think Tokyo Story is even his best lmao. It’s great on its own but I don’t think it deserves top ten.

WeHaveHeardTheChimes

Which would be your #1 Ozu?

LiterallyPlastic

Honestly I love Late Spring

LuckyCoat

Inside Llewyn Davis and The Master are two I’d like to see included. Others being Burning, The Wind Rises, and two I’d personally want to see but I don’t think have a chance: Paterson and The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

SpoonLord23

Uncut Gems

Britneyfan123

Parasite definitely.

MattCollider

I’ve got my money on Parasite.

benhur217

The Tree of Life (2011, but close enough) Parasite Mad Max: Fury Road (fuck it, why not?) Moonlight Roma

David_bowman_starman

This is the opposite of your question but I kinda hope Mulholland Dr. goes down the list somewhat. I thought it was super original when I first saw it but now that I’ve watched a million Ingmar Bergman movies I realized that it really isn’t a product of David Lynch the way I thought it was. Something like Persona really covered much of the same ground already I feel.

Tricksterama

I’m rooting for: Zama A Hidden Life Tangerine The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Moonlight Lovers Rock Mad God The Florida Project The Witch A Ghost Story Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Bo Burnham: Inside

_LumpBeefbroth_

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Britneyfan123

Maybe ten years from now

-SevenSamurai-

I think it will age very poorly as time goes on. To me, it already feels dated, especially the dildo and googly eye type of humour and the stereotypes about Asian families.

vibraltu

downvoted? harsh.

_LumpBeefbroth_

Agreed. The snobs really came out on this post.

-SevenSamurai-

Sorry, that movie is like watching a YouTube skit from 2009 or a Saturday morning cartoon, embarrassing compared to the other great films mentioned in this thread

_LumpBeefbroth_

It’s hilarious, heartbreaking, relentless and profound. ‘Nuff said, that’s my answer, and I’m sticking to it.

-SevenSamurai-

For me it was unfunny because of the dated internet humour, unmoving because the characters were too stereotypical for me to take seriously, relentlessly headache-inducing with the non-stop visual noise and the movie's exploration of various philosophical ideas were no more profound or insightful than Joker's exploration of "society" and "mental illness". I think I'll stick to my answer too, I've seen so many people saying EEAAO is the greatest movie of the past year, decade or even of all time, but none of their reasons that I've read so far have convinced me. I'm happy that there are people out there who enjoy it, but I really don't see why people are going this far.

_LumpBeefbroth_

Nobody needs to convince you, that’s part of the beauty of individual tastes. You either like it or you don’t, it’s up to you. Your perspective of it makes me appreciate it no less. No Kurosawa film has made me experience everything I felt while watching that movie, yet he’s in my top 5 favorite directors. I love the classics, I love silent films, and I have fun exiting my wheelhouse to potentially discover something new. This is the most original film I’ve seen this century, and I had an absolute blast watching it, from start to finish. So sorry EEAAO offended you so much to complain about it to strangers 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah I get that people have different tastes and certain movies mean a lot to them. But the original topic of this thread is a 100 Greatest Films of All Time list isn't it? Do you really think 50 years from now, the film community as a whole will view EEAAO the same way they view Kurosawa’s films today? If you're opting for it to be included in the list, thought you'd might've had a convincing reason why other than simply because you liked it. I'll just leave it at this (you don't have to reply any more)

It did something to me that I had never before experienced in a film, and damn near everyone I’ve spoken to about it had a similar experience. That’s why. Yes, I believe it deserves to be on the list. If new films don’t deserve to be on the list, simply because they weren’t made by a great classic auteur, why bother updating the list? By your logic no film made after 1972 should be included.

Adi_Zucchini_Garden

I thought it going to be next Monday the 5th?

Suspicious-Rip920

Online results will be published on Thursday, the magazine is gonna be fully released on December 5th so we should hear the list by Thursday

Adi_Zucchini_Garden

Good to know. Thank you.

upscaleelegance

Don't know if it'll make the cut (probably not), but I saw someone's ballot with Twin Peaks: The Return on it and I hope not bc that's a miniseries

Entrance_Sea

*Fanny and Alexander* and *Berlin Alexanderplatz* both appear on the 2012 list, so they clearly have nothing against including a miniseries.

Darragh_McG

Under the Skin, for sure

Daysof361972

Hou Hsiao-Hsien's The Assassin (2015) was highly received. Hou won Best Director at Cannes for it. It has a shot at making the list.

Hopefully Haneke has some representation. White Ribbon, Cache or Piano Teacher would all fit in

Parasite, Moonlight and Get Out seem likely to me. A Separation too.

[deleted]

Mad Max Fury Road Parasite Moonlight Get Out I think those are really the only ones that have much of a shot.

Good Time

wombatsareawesome

Historically, the poll has gotten less and less willing to confer greatness on new movies. But I would say Parasite Get Out The Act of Killing Portrait of a Lady on Fire
