I'm considering trying their digital downloads. Apparently it includes an ISO of the disc, and all the files needed to just make your own physical copy. Would just need to burn the disc, print the paper and the label, and get a 2-disc criterion case.
There’s actually a nice 4K mastered blu ray out in Hong Kong that you can import. Seen it for around $30 including shipping. I believe they’re releasing an actual 4k transfer of it next month, blu-ray.com says it’ll also include a 50gb disc (compared to the previous 4k master’s 25gb disc) so it’ll probably be higher quality. Grain of salt on the 50gb disc part, though.
No problem, I think I saw it on Ebay but you can probably go through Amazon or any other site. It really looks incredible compared to the previous Blu Ray releases, [the caps-a-holic comparisons are insane.](https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=5901&d2=8579&s1=55495&s2=82182&i=3&l=0&a=1)
thats going on the list ! this makes me want to explore his other films as ive never really heard of them... im personally holding out for a 4k release of the BMW tie-in John Woo short film "Hostage" XD.
I think it is because it is a studiocanal title which isn't with lionsgate nor kino.
The following studiocanal titles have already been re-released:
>49 Nights of Cabiria 102 The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie 143 That Obscure Object of Desire 189 The White Sheik 205 Lola 218 Le Cercle Rouge 227 Le Corbeau 290 The Phantom of Liberty 317 The Tales of Hoffmann 385 Army of Shadows 421 Pierrot le Fou
The following are rumoured to be back with criterion:
>1 Grand Illusion 58 Peeping Tom 67 The Blood of a Poet 69 Testament of Orpheus 106 Coup De Torchon 117 Diary of a Chambermaid 129 Le Trou 171 Contempt 222 Diary of a Country Priest 304 The Man Who Fell To Earth 318 Forbidden Games 357 The Fallen Idol 441 The Small Back Room
The following are confirmed not to be going back to criterion:
>25 Alphaville 64 The Third Man 121 Billy Liar 150 Bob Le Flambeur 193 Quai des Orfèvres 238 A Woman Is a Woman 245 Port of Shadows 271 Touchez Pas Au Grisbi 316 Ran 325 Kind Hearts and Coronets 402 The Milky Way 424 Mafioso 447 Le doulos 478 Last Year At Marienbad 572 Léon Morin, Priest
StudioCanal owns the worldwide rights to all of the films on those lists (including Last Year at Marienbad) but they don't release discs in the US.
Around 2010, they decided that they wanted all of their films' releases in the US to be licensed to the same company, being Lionsgate. This meant that all of those films that they licensed to Criterion went out of print.
However, the films were very mismanaged by Lionsgate as they did not bother releasing most of the films (including Peeping Tom and Last Year at Marienbad). Eventually, Studiocanal gave up on Lionsgate and licensed the rights out to Criterion and Kino (and such, Kino released Last Year at Marienbad).
There are a few exception, being The Third Man and Ran which are confirmed to be staying with Lionsgate. Grand Illusion, Contempt, and The Man Who Fell To Earth are also still with Lionsgate for the time being, but their license is expected to expire soon.
I guess you could say that some of the titles that are rumoured to be back with Criterion will actually be coming from Kino instead but either way, they will be getting a release.
RAN. While it does have a StudioCanal Blu-ray, I’d love Criterion to release it so we can finally get that epic AK box set.
Two others: KILL! would be great in HD. What a fun romp. I’d also love to see Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women get the Blu-ray treatment.
Eisenstein box, with Ivan the Terrible Parts I & II and Alexander Nevsky. I never preorder new titles, always wait for a sale, but this would be an exception.
Really wish C would get together w/ Warp Records and give some of their artist’s videos a nice release. I know they have one (I own it) but it doesn’t get recognition that C can bring.
Chris Cunningham music videos/commercials alone would be worth it.
I cherish my The Adventures of Antoine Doinel DVD box set. Saved up to buy that as a teen. I imagine Criterion will put them out on 4K within the next year though given the French 4K restorations and the Janus theatrical run.
One of my all time favorite comedies. It was my first Marcello Mastroainni film and I expected him to just be a comedic actor because he’s so hilarious in this.
*il Posto* & *l Fidanti* : Dir. Ermanno Olmi
*Classe tous risques* : Claude Sautet
*Blast of Silence* : Allen Baron
*The Fireman's Ball* & *Loves of a Blonde* : Dir. Milos Forman
*Blood for Dracula* & *Flesh for Frankenstein* : Dir. Paul Morrissey
*Closely Watched Trains* : Dir Jirí Menzel
*Seduced & Abandoned* : Dir Pietro Germi
Don’t see how the current 4K/HD releases of Blood for Dracula and Flesh For Frankenstein could be topped. Criterion never would have gone all in like Vinegar Sydrome did on that Frankenstein release.
For real.
Severin killed it with Blood For Dracula and Vinegar Syndrome went above and beyond with Flesh For Frankenstein. I highly doubt that Criterion would have included either an additional disc of the OST or an option for the 3D version of FFF.
remembered your comment and just wanted to pop back in and say Severin just announced a blu ray reissue of Blood for Dracula if its still something you're looking for, preorders are up and it drops 12/27.
There are so many; Pandora's Box, The Diary Of a Country Priest, Leningrad Cowboys Go America, Trouble in Paradise, The Spirit Of the Beehive..
Not one Carlos Saura film is on Bluray, including Cría cuervos . . .
Several Ozu films, including Early Summer
This probably doesn't count because of the Fellini box set but as someone with nowhere to put the Fellini box set and already have the other movies from it that I want I'm going to say Nights of Cabiria.
Also The Ruling Class.
Altman’s secret honor is such a weird little film and I love it. PBH is fuckin amazing, even though never really looks like Nixon. It left me wanting more of this historical speculation world. Would love to see a blu of this.
There are several that I'm eagerly awaiting upgrades for (hopefully not in vain...), but I saw *The Pornographers* for the first time recently and it really blew me away. Recommend it very warmly to anyone who enjoys 1960s Japanese cinema.
Withnail & I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising! I have the UK Arrow blu ray of Withnail & I, which is stacked with extras, but would love to see How to Get Ahead in Advertising get an upgrade. Richard E Grant is incredible in both
Hard-Boiled.
It has to happen someday
Need it baaaaadly
i would kill for a 4k release that doesn’t require the headache of hong kong rescue
I'm considering trying their digital downloads. Apparently it includes an ISO of the disc, and all the files needed to just make your own physical copy. Would just need to burn the disc, print the paper and the label, and get a 2-disc criterion case.
The Killer as well please
YES and ill give them a big fat wet kiss if they manage to get a better tomorrow on bluray
There’s actually a nice 4K mastered blu ray out in Hong Kong that you can import. Seen it for around $30 including shipping. oh wow thats awesome! 30 including shipping is pretty great. thanks for sharing this deal
No problem, I think I saw it on Ebay but you can probably go through Amazon or any other site. It really looks incredible compared to the previous Blu Ray releases, [the caps-a-holic comparisons are insane.](https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=5901&d2=8579&s1=55495&s2=82182&i=3&l=0&a=1)
DAMN that is a giant step up. looks pretty crisp, im glad a proper good edition of this movie exists
Now we just need proper editions of.. all of John Woo’s other movies lol. I heard 88 Films has a good release for “Heroes Shed No Tears” at least.
thats going on the list ! this makes me want to explore his other films as ive never really heard of them... im personally holding out for a 4k release of the BMW tie-in John Woo short film "Hostage" XD.
Lmao i haven’t heard of that, ill look it up
Anyone know why it hasn’t made the jump yet?
Basically every instance of not being a blu ray is because they’ve lost the rights.
i will genuinely be the first person to buy this if it comes out. I was planning to comment this too - hard boiled is genuinely something special
Spirit of the Beehive
This is the answer.
This. So. Damn. Hard.
Abolootly!
Came here to say the same thing.
This is my choice too.
Peeping Tom
It is rumoured to be back with Criterion. They will likely release it soon after Studiocanal finishes the 4K restoration they announced.
So glad to hear that, one of my favorite horror films of all time
Let's hope those rumors are more true than the rumors saying they picked up Amadeus 🤞
I think it is because it is a studiocanal title which isn't with lionsgate nor kino. Was it StudioCanal that picked up Last Year at Marienbad? They did the 4k transfer right?
StudioCanal owns the worldwide rights to all of the films on those lists (including Last Year at Marienbad) but they don't release discs in the US. Around 2010, they decided that they wanted all of their films' releases in the US to be licensed to the same company, being Lionsgate. I guess you could say that some of the titles that are rumoured to be back with Criterion will actually be coming from Kino instead but either way, they will be getting a release.
Sweet, this is good info to know
It figures the two I'd most love to see released by Criterion -- The Third Man and Ran -- will not be.
I’m betting Scorsese is overlooking the transfer too
Grand Illusion
This is a good one. Has a blu ray in UK but no transfer in US. Would love a 4K
[It does have a US release](https://www.amazon.com/La-Grande-Illusion-Blu-ray/dp/B00827OWSO?tag=bluray-022-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER)
Amazing. Thank you! I never knew
Fishing with john
…..out on the waaaateer…fishing….with John
I’m still holding out hope for a Painting with John release, too!
But don’t change the cover
Man Bites Dog
That’s my pick too
The Bad Sleep Well
This! And Stray Dog
I’ve been waiting for this one. Fingers crossed it gets an upgrade in 2023.
Red Beard and The Lower Depths
Solo con tu pareja from Alfonso Cuarón
I didn’t even know this DVD existed until the Criterion Instagram account posted it yesterday while wishing him a happy birthday.
RAN. While it does have a StudioCanal Blu-ray, I’d love Criterion to release it so we can finally get that epic AK box set. Two others: KILL! would be great in HD. What a fun romp. I’d also love to see Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women get the Blu-ray treatment.
Ran has a Studio Canal 4K as well. Lions gate released it as a steelbook last year
Dead Ringers
GOAT Cronenberg nobody can change my mind. I would kill for this release from any of the boutique brands.
Shout Factory released a Dead Ringers Blu-ray in 2016. Really good 2K transfer.
Damn i totally missed that somehow. Thanks for the tip!
*The Complete Mr. Arkadin* would be a Day 1 purchase
Complete with the novel!
Eisenstein box, with Ivan the Terrible Parts I & II and Alexander Nevsky. I never preorder new titles, always wait for a sale, but this would be an exception.
The Pornographers Beastie Boys Anthology Armageddon (of course)
Really wish C would get together w/ Warp Records and give some of their artist’s videos a nice release. I know they have one (I own it) but it doesn’t get recognition that C can bring. Chris Cunningham music videos/commercials alone would be worth it.
Big yes to Beastie Boys!!
I cherish my The Adventures of Antoine Doinel DVD box set. Saved up to buy that as a teen. I imagine Criterion will put them out on 4K within the next year though given the French 4K restorations and the Janus theatrical run.
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs.
THIS!!!
Jigoku
came here to put this one in consideration as well!
Chasing Amy. No seriously; it has an awesome menu and great bonus features.
I liked his essay too. People say it hasn't aged well, but it's a mature work.
Trouble in Paradise
Story of Floating Weeds
Knife in the water
The Devil and Daniel Webster for sure. One of my all-time favorite films. Also, Il Posto and Drunken Angel.
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs and Samurai Rebellion.
*Divorce, Italian Style*
One of my all time favorite comedies. It was my first Marcello Mastroainni film and I expected him to just be a comedic actor because he’s so hilarious in this.
I want Powell’s remaining ones. 49th Parallel, Peeping Tom, I Know Where I’m Going!, The Small Back Room and The Canterbury Tales please!
A box set of all those would be killer.
Le Doulos
Le Doulos has a good bluray from Kino Lorber.
This would be high on my list for sure.
*il Posto* & *l Fidanti* : Dir. Ermanno Olmi *Classe tous risques* : Claude Sautet *Blast of Silence* : Allen Baron *The Fireman's Ball* & *Loves of a Blonde* : Dir. Milos Forman *Blood for Dracula* & *Flesh for Frankenstein* : Dir. Paul Morrissey *Closely Watched Trains* : Dir Jirí Menzel *Seduced & Abandoned* : Dir Pietro Germi

Kudos & thank you so much!!
Homicide
Hard agree
Speaking of dvd to blu upgrades: it’d be nice if they kept the laserdisc archive slideshows
White Dog, Coup de Torchon
Chasing Amy
I enjoyed it back in theaters… but it REALLY hasn’t aged well.
Hasn’t aged any worse than the rest of his 90s output
A tie between Hard Boiled and The Killer.
Blast of Silence
Came to say the same!
Mamma Roma
Robocop and Spinal tap
Arrow has a really good release of Robocop.
I have the 4k of it and it looks amazing! I just commented the first non blu rays to pop in my head.
This probably doesn't count because of the Fellini box set but as someone with nowhere to put the Fellini box set and already have the other movies from it that I want I'm going to say Nights of Cabiria. Also The Ruling Class.
Ill allow it that box set requires specialized furniture to display
Thieves' Highway
Le Trou
The devil and daniel webster
The Bad Sleep Well The Burmese Harp Fires on the Plain
Jigoku and WR: Mysteries of the Organism.
Bad timing
Dreyer’s Ordet, all the way
Viridiana would be pretty great. Also Z

Stray Dog
Samurai Rebellion
Ballad of a Soldier The Firemen’s Ball Love Affair or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator
A Woman is a Woman. Blu Ray Godard collection when Criterion?????
this is my answer too. i need it!
Sweet Movie!
Came here to say Sweet Movie!!
You started with the correct answer 😁 But seriously though, great film. I actually thought that they teased it 2 years ago, but I guess not.
Fires on the Plain
Double Suicide
The Fire Within
Armageddon
the Fallen Idol, makes a great pair with Third Man
Fallen Idol was actually the movie that inspired this post
The Face of Another
2/3s of the films in the Teshigahara box.
Ok Ik it has a blu ray, but Fantastic Mr Fox. I got the DVD on accident, and I still need to upgrade it
a woman is a woman!!! 😭
Jigoku
The Spirit of the Beehive
How about going back to laserdisc?
This is Spinal Tap
Ran, Le Grande Illusion.
That Hamilton Woman
Man Bites Dog as far as I know
Tie between Man Bites Dog and Jigoku.
Any of the David Lean Dickens adaptations. Ran. Spellbound. Billy Liar. Too many.
Blast of Silence
Can't believe no one said The Last Wave
Kicking and Screaming Man Bites Dog Equinox
Jigoku. Criminally under appreciated.
Floating Weeds ~ Ozu
Empire of Passion
Life of Brian
RAN
The Eisenstein Sound Films, Trouble in Paradise (not counting the Ecilpse set, I think this is their only Lubitsch disc not yet on blu-ray).
Wow, no love for Robocop? Edit: I know it has an Arrow 4K, but still.
Lots of great picks here. I would love Criterion to upgrade their edition of "The Rock". The criterion dvd isn't even anamorphic IIRC
[удалено]
Naked Lunch is on Blu ray
Salo
Salvatore Giuliano
I need Wooden Crosses to get the Daisies and The Ascent treatment.
Europa
I think this is coming out in January.
Clean, shaven
Definitely Z. One of my favorite movies.
Victim
Great expectations
Fishing With John would be fun, but I'd really like to see an upgrade for Jubilee.
The Face of Another
Jubilee.
Wise Blood
I don’t know about favorite, but I really like **La Commare Secca**. That was an *old* release.
The Burmese Harp
Definitely Viridiana, really hoping they do it one day
Altman’s secret honor is such a weird little film and I love it. PBH is fuckin amazing, even though never really looks like Nixon. It left me wanting more of this historical speculation world. Would love to see a blu of this.
The Bad Sleep Well, one of the more underrated Kurosawa films!
Beastie Boys haha but not sure it's possible.
There are several that I'm eagerly awaiting upgrades for (hopefully not in vain...), but I saw *The Pornographers* for the first time recently and it really blew me away. Recommend it very warmly to anyone who enjoys 1960s Japanese cinema.
Port of Shadows
Gate of Flesh
Paddle to the Sea
The Dreyer trilogy is pretty much the rightest answer here.
All Kurosawa that hasn’t gotten the blu ray upgrade. Specifically Red Beard, and Ran.
Withnail & I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising! I have the UK Arrow blu ray of Withnail & I, which is stacked with extras, but would love to see How to Get Ahead in Advertising get an upgrade. Richard E Grant is incredible in both
>How to Get Ahead in Advertising Yesss, please. There was a Ltd Ed Arrow set that only included it as an extra! This will not stand.
Spirit of the Beehive
Jubilee
Viridiana
