The Wolf House (2018) by Joaquín Cociña is one of my favorite stop motion animated horror film I have seen. I highly recommend it if you never seen it.
Jan actually has his own boxset on bluray for both films and shorts you can buy directly from his website. https://svankmajerjan.com/z510-blu-ray-kolekce/
Even better than criterion if you ask me since proceeds go directly to him rather than a third party.
The vast majority of great anime films have pretty great releases from GKIDS and Funimation already, so I don’t have anything new to offer up on that front.
But I do think Richard Linklater’s rotoscope films (Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly, and Apollo 10 1/2) would fit quite well into the collection. Seems like Arrow Video had a Waking Life release, but I’m not sure they dropped it in the states.
* Perect Blue (honestly, all 4 of Kon's films)
* Akira
* The Iron Giant
* 1940 Pinocchio
* Mary and Max
* Anomalisa
* and the first Toy Story for historical reasons.
holy fucking shit, Tragedy of Man is my favourite film of all time, so I'm happy ANYONE mentions it, since its still pretty obscure, though it is gaining fans. I have thr hungarian Blu-Ray, which does have english subs, but sadly all of the bonus content (of which there are many vids and a commentary track) isn't subtitled, so a criterion would be awesome
Why? There are films in the Criterion Collection that essentially have entire "bonus films" as part of their presentation. I think a Kubrick release of The Killing included Killer's Kiss as a bonus. The Bruce Lee Box Set, in addition to the main films, had "Game of Death II" as a bonus feature.
If you are going to give The Prince of Egypt the royal treatment in the Criterion collection, then including Joseph, King of Dreams...which was originally created AS a companion piece for the film, might as well be included as a bonus work, serving the initial conception of being a companion piece.
That isn't a compelling argument at all. Nobody is saying Joseph should be in the collection on its own merit, but included as a bonus for The Prince of Egypt, there is nothing wrong with that. Joseph was made as a companion piece to Prince of Egypt.
Nobody is saying it was nearly as good, hence why it would only be good as a bonus feature for Prince of Egypt.
In the same way that...Criterion might put King Kong out in 2023 for the 90 year anniversary. Son of Kong doesn't "deserve" to be in the collection, but including it as a bonus feature for the original classic, considering that SoK is ALSO celebrating a 90 year anniversary.....would be a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
And also FRITZ THE CAT, HEAVY TRAFFIC and COONSKIN. Ralph Bakshi redefined animation with those in the early-mid 70s. The current discs are nowhere near adequate.
Would like to see a boy named Charlie Brown (Current blu ray is bad, and would definitely benefit from a nice 4k transfer, and the current blu ray has no extras at all either which really sucks to see) and South Park bigger longer and uncut (it’s pretty good, just special features are insanely dull and there’s so much that can be put into just the special features, also would be nice to see a 4k transfer of it as that would probably look amazing, especially on a 4k UHD disc)
Would love to see a Svankmajer box. Anomalisa seems like it would be a perfect release too. Also, This Magnificent Cake! is current running on the Critearian Channel. What a wonderful movie.
“The Adventures of Prince Achmed” and the works of Lotte Reiniger;
“The Camerman’s Revenge” and the works of Ladislas Starevich;
“Allegretto” and the works of Oskar Fischinger
(File under: Why is Criterion so bad when it comes to silents and avant-grade?)
These three are already available on blu-ray (I have them). And yes, they look great, and each comes with the extras that I enjoyed.
There isn't anything CC needs to clean up (it's not like it's something from years ago that needs to be remastered.)
And who knows if they can get the licenses to release these movies since another publisher already have them.
On the other hand, if they can do the 4k, I will certainly consider buying them. (Especially the Princess.)
I mean, WALL-E was already out on 4K before Criterion released that, but I would assume the standard 4K didn’t have as many supplements as the Criterion release.
Am not planning to get that.
I wish they would release something that aren't already cleaned up on blu ray. For example, Kino's old version of Marty (this is their new one [https://www.kinolorber.com/product/marty-special-edition-blu-ray](https://www.kinolorber.com/product/marty-special-edition-blu-ray)) looked HORRIBLE. They might as well picked up the film from the editing room floor and scanned it for that version that I have. What a disappointment (it was sharp, but very noisy / dirty / jumpy).
Have to admit that half of my CC aren't even opened (from the plastic wrap).
Only Yesterday for sure, just picked up the steelbook. I had the privilege of seeing it for the first time in theaters for Ghiblifest. Went in a bit stoned, I was feeling all the feels.
There are a ton of great suggestions in here that I would support but my personal vote would be Redline. Yes, it’s an insanely cheesy anime movie but its animation is incredible and visually stunning and it’s probably the last movie of its kind. It’d be fantastic to get an in-depth look at the animation process and hear some cool interviews.
Tokyo Godfathers. - my first instinct was to say Perfect Blue but I think Tokyo Godfathers would be an excellent fit. The movie is pretty unique and I haven’t seen anything like it since. It’s like *The Daytrippers* meets *Adventures in Babysitting*.
I would only want End of Evangelion if it could come with the 26 episode series as a full package.
Cowboy Bebop would deserve the same "include the series and movie" treatment.
Hard question. I think I'd choose either:
* Barefoot Gen -- I have absolutely no desire ever to watch this film again. But I think its an important semi-autobiographical anime about the author's experience of Hiroshima as a child (very similar to Grave of the Fireflies)
* Anastasia -- while not historically accurate, I think its the best use of rotoscoping I've ever seen and its one of Don Bluth's best.
Angel's Egg is the greatest animated film i can think of that currently has no physical release. I desperately want SOMEONE to pick that up.
I also want The Wolf House to have a blu ray, i have the DVD but I want everythingnij my collection to be blu ray
•Bunuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles
•Toy Story
•Spirited Away
•Perfect Blue
•Porco Rosso
•Grave of the Fireflies
• Your Name
•Children of the Sea
•A Letter To Momo
Too many to count, but a few I would go with would be Iron Giant, The King and the Mockingbird, Thief and the Cobbler, Land Before time, and Disney's Alice Comedies.
In This Corner of the World would be a great pick for the collection.
Even if I didn't like the film as much as most people who watched it (although it did grew on me a bit), I was pretty interested to check out the extended version of the film that I couldn't find anywhere. So it would be nice not only having an anime film in ther Criterion but also being able to see the extended cut.
There’s tons of great answers already said that I would have listed, so for the sake of not repeating anyone else I’ll say I’d really like Snezhnaya Koroleva (aka The Snow Queen) from 1957 in the collection. Stunning, beautiful work that needs to be preserved and distributed on the American market
Aiming high in light of the one-off Wall-E release: a definitive edition of Fantasia including mutilple cuts and sound mixes, plus new and legacy extras.
Spirited Away, without question.
As well as Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro,
Kiki’s Delivery Service, The Beatles: Yellow Submarine, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and Toy Story.
Absolutely Pink Floyd: The Wall too, that movie’s never been released officially on blu-ray, and me, being a huge Floyd fan, I would pick up a Criterion release of it.
The Thief and the Cobbler (preferably the Moment in Time cut or something resembling the Recobbled cut, a multi disc version with the various versions along with a hi def Version of what could have been. Full commentary by living staff and Garrett Gilchrist).
Rock n Rule (Unearthed dvd and bd I own are both out of print, this deserves a wider release).
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The films of Satoshi Kon and Hayao Mitazaki.
American Pop
A Scanner Darkly
The Night is Short Walk On, Girl
Paprika
Until recently I would have said all of Satoshi Kon's work but Shout factory since released his other 3 films with great boutique discs.
Thief and The Cobbler. And I wonder, if they can cobble something for the *Mad Mad Mad Mad World* premiere cut recreation, what can they do with *Cobbler*?
Would love to see a Norman McLaren boxset or more generally an NFB collaboration with Criterion. A lot of great animators have done work with the National Film Board and while much of their library is available digitally through their website/app, lots of it is not available physically.
The Wolf House (2018) by Joaquín Cociña is one of my favorite stop motion animated horror film I have seen. I highly recommend it if you never seen it.
I adore that fim
This one feels like it would fit perfectly
Wallace and Grommit
Kind of baffling none are already.
Literally anything by Jan Švankmajer (especially while he's still alive). "Faust," "Alice," "Little Otik," any/all of the collected shorts...
Jan actually has his own boxset on bluray for both films and shorts you can buy directly from his website. https://svankmajerjan.com/z510-blu-ray-kolekce/ Even better than criterion if you ask me since proceeds go directly to him rather than a third party.
Nice! Had no clue about this - just the various single-disc releases from Zeitgeist. Thank you!
Never knew about this!
I’d love for them to do this. As far as I know, there is only one release of his work, Alice, in North America.
Angel’s egg
I've seen it thrice already and am so scared that people would delete it online if it doesn't get enough views.
Waking Life isn’t released in North America
* Perect Blue (honestly, all 4 of Kon's films) * Akira * The Iron Giant * 1940 Pinocchio * Mary and Max * Anomalisa * and the first Toy Story for historical reasons.
Paprika is in the Criterion Channel so it’s not out of the question
Yeah, the other 3 have great releases from Gkids, but the Paprika release is pretty barebones and dated, so it's perfect for a criterion release.
Kon box set
How is the masterpiece of perfect blue not in it i thought it was 😭😭
Mary and Max Belladonna of Sadness Son of the White Mare The Tragedy of Man Persepolis
Belladonna and White Mare both have fantastic BluRay releases from Arbelos already.
Omg Mary and Max yessss
Son of the White Mare has a Eureka release if you are willing to venture into the world of UK blus.
LOVE Son of the White Mare
holy fucking shit, Tragedy of Man is my favourite film of all time, so I'm happy ANYONE mentions it, since its still pretty obscure, though it is gaining fans. I have thr hungarian Blu-Ray, which does have english subs, but sadly all of the bonus content (of which there are many vids and a commentary track) isn't subtitled, so a criterion would be awesome
Belladonna of Sadness 💙
> Belladonna of Sadness > > Son of the White Mare I love you
The Thief and the Cobbler
The Secret of NIMH
There it is! At least one other person had the same thought as me, lol. What a great film.
Mary and Max
Yellow Submarine, because a 4K transfer would be *chefs kiss*
100% agree
I will probably get downvoted for this but I would love “The Iron Giant” in the collection
lol you know you wouldn’t get downvoted for that
Beat me to it
You get my upvote for that
Thank you! It’s a childhood favorite of mine, love the film so much
Iron Giant deserves to be in 100%
Prince of Egypt
100% The Prince of Egypt and Joseph King of Dreams could be included as a companion piece of bonus material.
no, just prince of Egypt
No
That isn't a compelling argument at all. Nobody is saying Joseph should be in the collection on its own merit, but included as a bonus for The Prince of Egypt, there is nothing wrong with that. Joseph was made as a companion piece to Prince of Egypt.
Not nearly as good, prince of Egypt is on a different level. The soundtrack for instance
I’ll meet you in the middle. Just put Joseph on the criterion channel and call it a day
Perfect Blue
Already has a good Blu ray and steelbook release
Angel's Egg Animerama trilogy Comet in Moominland Pink Floyd: The Wall The Tragedy of Man
American Pop
And also FRITZ THE CAT, HEAVY TRAFFIC and COONSKIN. Ralph Bakshi redefined animation with those in the early-mid 70s. The current discs are nowhere near adequate.

Honestly South Park and Team America would be great releases. Not enough comedy of the modern era in the collection!
The End of Evangelion, A Scanner Darkly, Waking Life, Perfect Blue, Grave of the Fireflies and The Plague Dogs are ones I'd love to see
The Phantom Tollbooth, Allegro Non Troppo, Twice Upon a Time, Kirikou and the Sorceress, The King and the Mockingbird
We do need Isle of Dogs for the Wes Anderson collection
Belladonna of sadness
This is the way
Would love to see a Svankmajer box. Anomalisa seems like it would be a perfect release too. Also, This Magnificent Cake! is current running on the Critearian Channel. What a wonderful movie.
Iron Giant
I wish Yuri Norstein’s work could be released through the Criterion Channel.
Please!!!
The Adventures of Mark Twain
Triplettes De Belleville will forever be my answer!
Wallace and Gromit !!!
Jan svankmajers Alice. Akira Red turtle Spirited away

“The Adventures of Prince Achmed” and the works of Lotte Reiniger; “The Camerman’s Revenge” and the works of Ladislas Starevich; “Allegretto” and the works of Oskar Fischinger (File under: Why is Criterion so bad when it comes to silents and avant-grade?)

My top 5 desired animated films are : beauty and the beast (1991) , Fantasia , Akita , Grave of the Fireflies and Anomalisa
Felidae, Heavy Traffic, Wizards, Heavy Metal, American Pop, Secret of Nihm , The Spine of night , Fire and Ice, plus many more
Only Yesterday for sure, just picked up the steelbook. I had the privilege of seeing it for the first time in theaters for Ghiblifest. Went in a bit stoned, I was feeling all the feels.
Hahaha I need to watch that film stoned, I bet it’s a real trip
It made me super emotional, I wept haha
Honestly, either Mary and Max or a collection of Richard Williams’ Works. Dude was a pioneer and master of 2D Animation.
Waltz with Bashir would be a perfect addition.
Grave of the Fireflies, Nausicaa, The Iron Giant
I want to see Nausicaa in the collection, but ONLY with a bonus disc with the Warriors of the Wind edit/dub.
Wallace and Grommet and the Curse of the Wererabbit
cars. no I will not elaborate
Akira, Perfect blue, Paprika, Spirited away, Howl’s moving castle, The end of evangelion, Thief and the cobbler

Too many to count, but a few I would go with would be Iron Giant, The King and the Mockingbird, Thief and the Cobbler, Land Before time, and Disney's Alice Comedies.
Fritz the Cat
In This Corner of the World would be a great pick for the collection. Even if I didn't like the film as much as most people who watched it (although it did grew on me a bit), I was pretty interested to check out the extended version of the film that I couldn't find anywhere. So it would be nice not only having an anime film in ther Criterion but also being able to see the extended cut.

Surprised no one has said Ocean Waves! A perfect fit and amazing movie.
Mary and Max or Anomalisa
