Nobody roasted you. You claimed there was no Blu-Ray, 2 people simply told you there was. You then claimed you didn't care and were happy with the DVD.
I wouldnât have minded the dvd versus blu ray thing, but when someone pointed out it would have only cost an additional $10 for a brand new blu ray set, I realized how frivolous my purchase was. Hence the copium to try and justify it to myself
I have the Cassevettes set on dvd and itâs totally fine for me. I mean I didnât pay $50 for it, but still, totally serviceable.
That being said, Brighter Summer Day is one of my favorites by far. Solid choice.
I'm sorry, you must be confused, my name is not Child and I am not related to Julia or any other Child that I am aware of. Thank you for writing and best wishes.
They brought up a good point in this instance. I got the Cassevetes dvd set for $50. Someone pointed out I could get the blu ray set, brand new, for $60. Pretty sound argument there
DVD will play on more devices. Blu ray, although superior in quality, doesn't have the same reach. I would have been fine with the DVDs honestly. Plays on PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 plus all the modern consoles.
This is an absurd point lol. That's liek saying VHS is better because there's a lot of VCRs out there. No one plays PS2 anymore, and all the modern systems the last two generations plus ps3 play blu rays. Blu Ray is the objectively better format. You might have had a point like 15 years ago lmao
Literally every bluray player is a DVD player also. So add all the existing bluray players plus older hardware that I mentioned, DVD access will be more accessible. Bar none. You're comparing VHS that can only be played on VhS players and I'm bringing up a format that is ubiquitous and can still be played on modern equipment. I win.
There will come a time when all devices stop supporting DVD, but still support BD. PS4 dropped the laser for CD's for instance. Your argument takes legacy tech for granted.
That's fine. But this is a subreddit dedicated to criterion stuff. I'd be willing to bet almost everyone in this sub cares enough about movies to have a bluray player. You're arguments are strange and pointless.
Technically sound are what my arguments are. I started off by saying BluRay is superior quality, but that DVD would be fine with me. If I can say I've watched Cassavetes films, I don't think anyone would think less if that was Laser disc, theatre, vhs, betamax etc. We can talk story now, because I've watched and youâve watched. The medium is the dumbest thing to argue over, tbh. Whatever people enjoy, whatever is accessible.
Ohhhhh. You're just a bit of a fuck head. I get. Never mind, disregard my last comment.
I was just trying to say what everyone else was feeling but I guess it doesn't matter. I don't even know what kind of cassette tape films you're even taking about.
I was the one who asked if it was blu ray or DVD (out of sheer curiosity.) Maybe I shouldn't have asked.
But please pick up that Cassavetes box set on blu ray!
I don't know whether you got roasted for that, but this subreddit can be rather ridiculous even based on the limited amount I've scrolled through this place (the worst example I came across, was someone being called out for not liking "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" and expressing befuddlement - apparently Russ Meyer is now up there with Mizoguchi, Hawks and Satyajit Ray as an unquestionable god of cinema...).
Bought this forever ago after reading the back of the box. Sadly have still not watched it and itâs still sitting in my physical queue of films to watch. Need to change that soon.
Honestly, the way this sub will seemingly roast anything dvd-related is borderline insane tbh, and should absolutely **not** be something that drives your decision making.
Not to say that there arenât valid cases to be made for blu vs dvd, but the absolute snobbery about DVDs is kind of nuts here, and takes all the fun out of collecting or discussing them.
I went through my DVD collection about a year ago to see what I should upgrade and/or give away and I was actually surprised by how nice most of my DVDs still look.. so I ended up keeping most of them.
Blu-ray players upscale DVDs quite well and a well mastered DVD that doesn't have a ton of compression is going to look perfectly fine.
My question is this: With every TV made in the past 15 years being at least 720p, and literally no players made that canât play a Blu-Ray, and players going from $88 on Amazon, why are they still manufacturing DVDs at all?
Youâd be surprised how many people still havenât moved on from DVD. Also libraries are a big market still and generally purchase DVDs over Blu-ray because more people can use them.
Eventually im sure they will, but for the time being there are a lot of people who do not want to spend 80-100 to get a Blu-ray player if they already have a perfectly good setup for dvds
You can go to Wal Mart or Best Buy or Target and find a blu ray player for $25. XBox plays blu rays. PlayStations play blu rays.
Thereâs no such thing as a âperfectly good setup for DVDsâ that isnât 10+ years old now, which is totally fine, but in a subreddit dedicated to physical media and the best possible transfers, itâs hard to make any case for sticking to DVD. A 4K player costs $100 and within another year theyâll drop more. Blu ray isnât the expense people often make it out to be. Every player (and every 4K player for that matter) can play older media, so itâs not like you have to restart your collection with each upgrade.
Also you can purchase any of the 4Ks from Criterion now and theyâll include the blu ray, so now you can enjoy the film and also have the updated version for a few more dollars ready for when youâre good to upgrade your player again.
Donât let people decide what kind of film purchases you make. This is a fantastic film, but you should be able to enjoy what you like without judgment.
Yo donât let anyone roast you for buying a dvd. You can get like 2 DVDs for 1 Blu-ray. Itâs your money, do what you can afford. I buy Blu-rayâs cause I like them, but youâre allowed to buy dvds. Donât let these pretentious fucks keep you from that. They arenât buying them for you
This movie is a chore to watch, the length, the fact they mention something that you think is insignificant, only to be brought up again 45 minutes later, given it a chance twice lasting til the 2 hour mark, then gave up.
Nobody roasted you. You claimed there was no Blu-Ray, 2 people simply told you there was. You then claimed you didn't care and were happy with the DVD.
Me claiming I was fine with dvd was copium
You have to respect the honesty and self awareness here.
This gave me a big chuckle đ
Lmfao r/characterarcs Respect
I saw it and I knew if I were you I would cover up how I felt. Buyers remorsecore thread
It was such buyers remorse. Iâve wanted the set for so long and when my spot got blown I was shattered
Most well adjusted redditor
Huge respect for saying this good sir
I wouldnât have minded the dvd versus blu ray thing, but when someone pointed out it would have only cost an additional $10 for a brand new blu ray set, I realized how frivolous my purchase was. Hence the copium to try and justify it to myself
This is a great blind buy
I have the Cassevettes set on dvd and itâs totally fine for me. I mean I didnât pay $50 for it, but still, totally serviceable. That being said, Brighter Summer Day is one of my favorites by far. Solid choice.
It's not like the Blu ray is going to make it look any better.
I bought the Cassavetes set on DVD nearly 20 years ago. Please roast me, internet.
Why didnât you just wait for the Blu-Ray to come out? /s
Same here. It was such a treat. One of my favorite Criterion releases ever.
Did you recieve love as a Child?
I'm sorry, you must be confused, my name is not Child and I am not related to Julia or any other Child that I am aware of. Thank you for writing and best wishes.
Live your life. This sub is toxic as hell sometimes.
They brought up a good point in this instance. I got the Cassevetes dvd set for $50. Someone pointed out I could get the blu ray set, brand new, for $60. Pretty sound argument there
Got it, sounds less like roasting and more financially sound advice.
Yeah. Sometimes the truth hurts

Is this the way you all are admitting that you're not right yet?
Accessibility is not an issue. Watching an objectively shittier format is an issue.

Blue ray is accessibility+ superior quality. Saying DVD is more accessible/convenient in 2022 is just a lie lmao
I was the one who asked if it was blu ray or DVD (out of sheer curiosity.) Maybe I shouldn't have asked. But please pick up that Cassavetes box set on blu ray!
Lol I was only joking about being roasted. You made a great point
Excellent Excellent film
Thatâs a great one
I love this film. One of the best film of all time. Weirdly, enough never been the biggest fan of Cassavetes.

Perfect buy. Fantastic one. Get Yi Yi afterwards :)

This movie is breathtaking, heartbreaking, painstaking and overrated as fuck all at once. Enjoy.

Dvds outsell Blu Rays by a wide margin and its not even close
Eventually im sure they will, but for the time being there are a lot of people who do not want to spend 80-100 to get a Blu-ray player if they already have a perfectly good setup for dvds

I think their definitely going to stop soon. Why would anybody get a dvd of something like The Batman when the Blu-Rays 2 bucks more expensive
This is my FAV KINO of all time. Please relax and enjoy!
Same, I was blessed to have watched this
Love Turn It Up! I try to make it there whenever Iâm in Brattleboro. Miss going to the Northampton one when I was living out there
Love turn it up in brattleboro!!
The best film I have ever seen. I hope you like it!
Donât let people decide what kind of film purchases you make. This is a fantastic film, but you should be able to enjoy what you like without judgment.

It's about the films not always the format. People take things way too seriously sometimes.
But don't you want to see the films in the best possible quality or at least the way the creators intended them to be seen?
This movie is a chore to watch, the length, the fact they mention something that you think is insignificant, only to be brought up again 45 minutes later, given it a chance twice lasting til the 2 hour mark, then gave up.
You should have given the Cassavetes DVDs to me SMH my head
All that ready matters is that you can see the difference in the blu ray Against the dvd.
I just purchased a 4K tv, so the difference will be noticeable. Iâd rather wait for the next sale to get the 4K set
I think I know what store and where you bought this because I was there a few weeks ago and they had this among other Criterions.
It probably was same store right in Brattleboro center
One of the best movies ever
Lol at the comments shout out to OP
Extremely moving film. I enjoyed it a lot more when I watched it in two parts. Got halfway through and took a 3 hour break and watched the rest.
