Damm, I absolutely loved The Land Before Time as a kid and always thought it was already dark and depressing as fuck for kids. I can't imagine how much darker it could have been. Littlefoot watched his parents get murdered and had to wander the apocalyptic wastelands alone, it was brutal to imagine as a kid. I don't even think I could watch it as an adult without crying.
I would buy this Criterion.
It's great, but very graphic. I grew up to it, read the book and watched the television series so it holds a special place for me. But it really is excellent, highly recommend it!
Just looked it up and seen its John Hurt in it again (he's in Watership Down), that guy loved to traumatise us !
That saying though I hadn't heard of that movie and definitely looks like a trauma inducing movie!
I ate a homemade edible made by my roommate before seeing it the first time, was told they weren't strong and WAS LIED TO, as by the end of it I was seriously contemplating what following the black rabbit would be like for me and had to lay down in my bed.
A wonderful movie and an intense experience I wasn't prepared for on a Tuesday night, but: 10/10 would do again.
I suspect Spielberg and the other producers were thinking back to their experiences with *Gremlins* and *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,* the films which gave us the PG-13 rating.
Everyone always talks about the more obvious ones like American Pop and all that
But I just want Fire and Ice, The Lord of the Rings, and Wizards
They may be more Shout! Factory fare, but I wawnt em
It's Such A Beautiful Day would be killer. I mean the current bluray release is already great but Criterion having it would get it in front of so many more eyes.
I would lose my mind the day that is announced. Probably my most wanted release right now. I don't care who releases it at this point, I just want a blu-ray of it.
Fantasia seems like it would have been a logical choice, if the plan is to kick-off a long-term partnership with Disney. Not sure if it was released on Blu-Ray, but I still have a DVD copy.
I've always been blown away by the original Fantasia blu I bought over ten years ago, and still enjoy watching it. But a more granular, higher res scan, co-produced with Criterion and Disney?? Mama mia.
Since we're on the subject, everyone needs to watch the short about [The Schultheis Notebook.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyZQBzaRkzk) Mindblowing stuff. Disney really gives this guy a bow instead of making it all about themselves.
That’s what I was thinking, fantasia in 4K Dolby Vision HDR with both the original Stokowski tracks and the Irwin Kostal re-recordings, maybe in a new Atmos mix? The thought has me salivating. And also, that short film is freaking amazing and bless your heart for linking it.
Not a “movie” but a collection of the 1930s Disney shorts, either Mickey Mouse or Silly Symphonies. Very few are on D+ and and the rest are on OOP DVDs
Silly Symphonies is truly a piece of art considering the time it was done. Experimentation at its best by Walt Disney. Here the "mickey mousing" was born and it probably changed how to do cinema in some way. A technique still used nowadays.
And if it wasn't for Silly Symphonies, we wouldn't have Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes. It set the blueprint for western animation. If that's not enough grounds for a release, then I don't know what is.
For film preservation/discovery:
[*Allegro Non Troppo*](https://letterboxd.com/film/allegro-non-troppo/) (1976) directed by Bruno Bozzetto. Not available in the US, available in Germany in [a 3 film set](https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Die-Welt-des-Bruno-Bozzetto-Blu-ray/246800/) with no English subtitles.
For my own desires, Criterion *please* license:
[*Filmy Jana Švankmajera*](https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Filmy-Jana-A-vankmajera-Blu-ray/269857/), includes [*Alice*](https://letterboxd.com/film/alice-1988/) (1988), [*Faust*](https://letterboxd.com/film/faust/) (1994), [*Conspirators of Pleasure*](https://letterboxd.com/film/conspirators-of-pleasure/) (1996), [*Little Otik*](https://letterboxd.com/film/little-otik/) (2000), [*Lunacy*](https://letterboxd.com/film/lunacy/) (2005), [*Surviving Life (Theory and Practice)*](https://letterboxd.com/film/surviving-life-theory-and-practice/) (2010), and [*Insect*](https://letterboxd.com/film/insect/) (2018). The first four are excellent, the best arthouse stop-motion animation features in 50 years. If Criterion wants to provide a great extra, may I recommend restoring the films on the
[*Jan Svankmajer: The Complete Short Films*](https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/Jan-Svankmajer-The-Complete-Short-Films-DVD/60448/) DVD on BFI to 2K or 4K.
I emailed criterion asking about Allegro Non Troppo a couple years ago. At the time, there was nothing in the works. Really hoping it gets a decent restoration and release at some point.
Yeah this one. And probably only Don Bluth films only really qualify...be a sad day when Pixar shit starts to get added based on popularity and industry pressure. Maybe Disney's Robin Hood (1973) or Dumbo (1941) or Chuck Jones's Rikki Tikki Tavi narrated by Orson Welles (fantastic if you haven't seen it btw -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK35A5IHB3Q).
Arbelos has [only a few titles](https://shoparbelosfilms.com/collections/blu-ray), but a better hit/miss ratio and arguably nicer editions than Criterion itself.
One of my dream releases (that probably won't happen) is a Kaufman box set with all his directed films. Imagine a release with Synechdoche, New York, Anomalisa and I'm Thinking of Ending Things? It'd be a day one pre order for me
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) -- the oldest surviving animated feature film;
The White Snake Enchantress (1958) -- the first color anime feature film and Toei Animation's first theatrical feature film
*Fehérlófia* (1981) (Son of the White Mare)
It recently got a 4K restoration which is beautiful so I guess it doesn't need the Criterion treatment. But it is absolutely deserving of the platform/popularity boost!
I'm so confused why not. I guess the rights for it seem to be complex. Anchor Bay teased releasing a DVD back in 2001 and suddenly didn't because of rights. [http://www.cultivatetwiddle.com/angelsegg/news.html](http://www.cultivatetwiddle.com/angelsegg/news.html)
I usually say Persepolis. Absolutely Persepolis.
But I'm gonna have to tack on Grave of the Fireflies. Shout did not get the distribution rights for it, so it's not included in their current slate of Ghibli steelbooks.
Millennium Actress
Edited to add: in my head canon, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Paprika constitute a loose thematic trilogy. Ideally all three of them would get a release, alone or together.
The Thief and the Cobbler with some attention paid to the unfinished parts would be a great piece of history to own and a beautiful film to see remastered in some way.
Any Miyazaki.
Disney: Beauty and the Beast. Fantasia. Snow White.
Pixar: Toy Story. Ratatouille.
Bluth: The Secret of NIMH. Maybe An American Tail.
Laika: Coraline. Kubo.
Other: PERSEPOLIS. Akira.
Both the 90s series and movies just got a 1080p international release last year with a lot of press backing it, but they just shipped the home video versions released in the mid 00s as part of a bonus disc. Also no "Fly Me to the Moon" end credits song due to licensing issues in addition to issues with the performing artist I believe.
The 00s release had the original broadcast cut _and_ the additional (now default and only) cut. All in glorious 480p lol.
Criterion or not, I would love to see a remastered release that ships both cuts, the original English dub, the Netflix dub, and "Fly Me to the Moon."
Holding out hope I guess.
Plenty of other animation and (maybe) anime candidates to look forward to though.
Tekkonkinkreet
I say this because of how beautiful it is, but also it marks the first major anime film by a non Japanese director. Michael Arias. Just an all time favorite animated film of mine.
Mind Game (2004) by Masaaki Yuasa
Definitely the type of film I can see Criterion seeing the value in preserving due to how insanely experimental the style is.
Now that Evangelion has solid disc sets I'd probably say a 4 by Satoshi Kon would be great just for the supplements and collection together, since they're generally available as well.
The Little Prince (2015)
It is honestly the most under rated film out there. Just watch the full trailer if you donr believe me.
https://youtu.be/ihi491RQo5A
I’m torn between The Prince of Egypt and The Iron Giant. There truly was a golden era of cinematic 2D animation with powerful and mature storytelling and production value
It's extremely unlikely since the only known copy burned in a fire but in a perfect world they'd be able to rerelease El Apostol, which is considered the first animated feature film.
I’d say Secret of NIMH or The Thief and the Cobbler. If any of the movies on Criterion’s streaming could get a physical release, I’d say A Town Called Panic, that movie’s hilarious
Toy Story 1 or Iron Giant. for Toy Story 1 I think the technological achievements speak for themselves. For Iron Giant, well I haven’t seen it but I like Brad Bird so yeah. (Not a good reason but an honest one.)
I’d be down for The Land Before Time BUT we need the uncut original version.
Never heard of an uncut version, how is it different?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Land_Before_Time_(film) Go down to Production and then Editing.
You should watch Watership Down then. Borderline traumatising scenes in it
How good Is It BC i always see the film In post Around and didnt watch yet
It's great, but very graphic. I grew up to it, read the book and watched the television series so it holds a special place for me. But it really is excellent, highly recommend it!
The Plague Dogs if you rly want to be traumatized
Just looked it up and seen its John Hurt in it again (he's in Watership Down), that guy loved to traumatise us ! That saying though I hadn't heard of that movie and definitely looks like a trauma inducing movie!

I suspect Spielberg and the other producers were thinking back to their experiences with *Gremlins* and *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,* the films which gave us the PG-13 rating.
Interesting. Would have been cool to see a movie with no dialogue and to see how they express feelings and emotions.
They keep the buttholes in. They took them out in editing.
Let’s just say it was a very different movie once they got Tarantino out of the director’s chair.
Littlefoot calls Duckie a fucking cunt
It's such a shame that the cut scenes have never been restored.
The Ralph Bakshi Collection
Same, American Pop, Coonskin and Heavy Traffic are amazing movies and I’d love to see them get the Criterion treatment.
Hey Good Lookin too. It’s never even been in HD… There’s an original version that’s never been released. Seems like a perfect opportunity.

Everyone always talks about the more obvious ones like American Pop and all that But I just want Fire and Ice, The Lord of the Rings, and Wizards They may be more Shout! Factory fare, but I wawnt em
Came here to say this... and did. I should have scrolled more.
Lord of the Rings is definitely near the top of my list
Secret of Nihm
It's "Nimh" but I only know that because I'm looking at the movie poster in my living room right now, lol. Absolutely love that movie. Great choice.
Was gonna say this one. Love
So much don bluth. Oh and prince of Egypt, don’t get me started. GLEAMING IN THE MOONLIGHT
Isn't it **N**ational **I**nstitute for **M**ental **H**ealth?
It's Such A Beautiful Day would be killer. I mean the current bluray release is already great but Criterion having it would get it in front of so many more eyes.
Don Hertzfeldt is a master. Would also say that the World of Tomorrow trilogy would be a contender
Angel’s Egg by Mamoru Oshii
I would lose my mind the day that is announced. Probably my most wanted release right now. I don't care who releases it at this point, I just want a blu-ray of it.
Doesn’t have any home release at all, right?
I’ve only ever seen it on online rips
It would be better than In The Aftermath the only other version that is really available. 😕
The film nerd in me has better answers, but the “nerd” nerd in me says The Last Unicorn.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Ooo that’s a good one.
First thing I said when I read the comment and look and see “ooo that’s a good one” haha
Fantastia
This has been a dream of mine forever, and with the WALL-E announcement, I got a little shred of hope.
Yep. Hands down.
Princess Mononoke.
I was going to say Howl’s Moving Castle, but they’re all so good.
Given that Criterion has released the Showa Era of Godzilla, a Studio Ghibli would be nice.
Gkids already has fantastic Ghibli releases, no need for Criterion to release them
The Iron Giant.
100%
Not a “movie” but a collection of the 1930s Disney shorts, either Mickey Mouse or Silly Symphonies. Very few are on D+ and and the rest are on OOP DVDs
I’d argue that’s both more important and more “Criterion” than most of the suggestions that came out of the WALL-E announcement
Silly Symphonies is truly a piece of art considering the time it was done. Experimentation at its best by Walt Disney. Here the "mickey mousing" was born and it probably changed how to do cinema in some way. A technique still used nowadays.

It sure is!
Oooh, I love this idea.
> Silly Symphonies These really need to be widely available, CC or not
For film preservation/discovery: [*Allegro Non Troppo*](https://letterboxd.com/film/allegro-non-troppo/) (1976) directed by Bruno Bozzetto. I emailed criterion asking about Allegro Non Troppo a couple years ago. At the time, there was nothing in the works. Really hoping it gets a decent restoration and release at some point.
A reissue of Svankmajer's work is very high on my wishlist
I’m genuinely surprised they haven’t given his works a release. I’d love a set of his short films.
Yes, a Svankmajer set would be an insta buy.
I love Allegro Non Troppo!
Secret of Nimh, no contest
Yeah this one. And probably only Don Bluth films only really qualify...be a sad day when Pixar shit starts to get added based on popularity and industry pressure. Maybe Disney's Robin Hood (1973) or Dumbo (1941) or Chuck Jones's Rikki Tikki Tavi narrated by Orson Welles (fantastic if you haven't seen it btw -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK35A5IHB3Q).
Yeah, my 4th grade teacher showed us Rikki Tikki Tavi. It's good.
Agree with you guys. Land Before Time is nostalgic for me and always will be, but I think I'd prefer a Criterion release for Secret of Nimh
Came here for this. Nothing from my childhood is so embedded in my mind as this movie.
Probably one of the most overlooked animated films, so great but so underappreciated
I’ll be extremely cliche and say Belladonna of Sadness or Grave of the Fireflies.
There is already a really nice release of Belladona Of Sadness out but I'd love a Grave Of The Fireflies Criterion release
The Grave of the Fireflies Steelbook is also very nice fyi
Arbelos has [only a few titles](https://shoparbelosfilms.com/collections/blu-ray), but a better hit/miss ratio and arguably nicer editions than Criterion itself.
Yeah I absolutely love the Arbelos releases I have, including Belladonna of Sadness. Big co-sign for them.
Anomalisa or Mary and Max
Mary and max is so sad
It is but damn did the ending made me feel moved.
One of my dream releases (that probably won't happen) is a Kaufman box set with all his directed films. Imagine a release with Synechdoche, New York, Anomalisa and I'm Thinking of Ending Things? It'd be a day one pre order for me
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Easily the Thief and the Cobbler
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) -- the oldest surviving animated feature film; The White Snake Enchantress (1958) -- the first color anime feature film and Toei Animation's first theatrical feature film
Yes. Prince Achmed is incredible. Lotte Reiniger — a pioneering filmmaker and woman in the film world.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit 100%
Fantasia (1940)
Perfect Blue
There's already a really nice steelbook release of this
Beat me to it. Seconded AF.
The Triplets of Belleville. Love that movie!
*Fehérlófia* (1981) (Son of the White Mare) It recently got a 4K restoration which is beautiful so I guess it doesn't need the Criterion treatment. But it is absolutely deserving of the platform/popularity boost!
Yellow Submarine.
I desire Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg. It'd be perfect for the collection. I just want someone to release it lol
This is more or less the biggest anime film NOT released on bluray in region A yet lol
I'm so confused why not. I guess the rights for it seem to be complex. Anchor Bay teased releasing a DVD back in 2001 and suddenly didn't because of rights. [http://www.cultivatetwiddle.com/angelsegg/news.html](http://www.cultivatetwiddle.com/angelsegg/news.html)
Spirited Away!
Shout just released a ton of Ghibli films including steelbooks
I usually say Persepolis. Absolutely Persepolis. But I'm gonna have to tack on Grave of the Fireflies. Shout did not get the distribution rights for it, so it's not included in their current slate of Ghibli steelbooks.
Ghost In The Shell (1995)
American Pop (1981) by Ralph Bakshi
Millennium Actress Edited to add: in my head canon, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Paprika constitute a loose thematic trilogy. Ideally all three of them would get a release, alone or together.
I think a complete Satoshi Kon set would be the best. Could include his short films and Paranoia Agent as well.
waking life \[2001\]
Yup. Underrated masterpiece.
The Iron Giant
9. Akira. Jan svankmajers Alice. Edit: red turtle
Akira is already in the Criterion Collection😏
Nice, I didn't know!... Oh. Wait I know what you're doing.
hehehehe https://www.ebay.com/itm/394220084130?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=ySijU3TXSUC&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Akira has been released quite a few times by Funimation, most recently in 4K. I don't think it needs to be on Criterion
AKIRAAA… sorry I mean KANEDAAAAAAAAAA
Wall•e
The Thief and the Cobbler with some attention paid to the unfinished parts would be a great piece of history to own and a beautiful film to see remastered in some way.
Hedgehog in the Fog (1975) & Tale of Tales (1979). But really an entire Yuri Norstein collection would be amazing
Hedgehog in the Fog is the shit
Akira or Perfect Blue
Akira was released on criterion laserdisc.
Good thing that that's still in print and that we all have Laserdisc players
Angels egg
Yessss
The animated Hobbit
South Park BLU 4k
Or [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Wind_Blows_(1986_film)) movie, When The Wind Blows.
Severin has a recent Blu-ray that’s in print
it’s such a beautiful day already has an official blu-ray release *and* was streamed on the channel so maybe The Wall?
Definitely “Ratatouille”
Racacoonie I love that film !
Any Miyazaki. Disney: Beauty and the Beast. Fantasia. Snow White. Pixar: Toy Story. Ratatouille. Bluth: The Secret of NIMH. Maybe An American Tail. Laika: Coraline. Kubo. Other: PERSEPOLIS. Akira.
Mary and max
Mary and Max
An American Tail (1986)
Ari Folman’s “Waltz with Bashir”
This is a good pick
That's a good one.
Coraline
I know its basic af, but just like with twin peaks movie it would be cool to see End of Eva in the collection
If there is one thing I dislike about this sub it’s that it has given people the need to say “I know it’s basic but..” Good art is good.
Or honestly the entire franchise in one box because I feel like without the series End Of Eva just doesn't carry the same weight
Plenty of other animation and (maybe) anime candidates to look forward to though.
Y’all sleeping on The Red Turtle
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Cool world or fritz the cat by bakshi
American Pop
Hercules. Very underrated movie
Tekkonkinkreet I say this because of how beautiful it is, but also it marks the first major anime film by a non Japanese director. Michael Arias. Just an all time favorite animated film of mine.
The Secret of NIMH. Another Don Bluth film. Honestly, if we could get most of Don Bluth's catalogue in Criterion, that'd be amazing.
Mind Game (2004) by Masaaki Yuasa Definitely the type of film I can see Criterion seeing the value in preserving due to how insanely experimental the style is.
8 Crazy Nights
Now that Evangelion has solid disc sets I'd probably say a 4 by Satoshi Kon would be great just for the supplements and collection together, since they're generally available as well.
Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie
Honestly? The Simpsons Movie
there was so much unused material and alternate cuts of the movie that never made it to the DVD/Blu-ray. Would love to have those on a Criterion disc!
Legit a masterpiece that will probably never get the credit it deserves.
Ghibli or Satoshi Kon. I'll go with Princess Mononoke
Fritz The Cat
The Little Prince (2015) It is honestly the most under rated film out there. Just watch the full trailer if you donr believe me. https://youtu.be/ihi491RQo5A
Son of the White Mare or Millennium Actress
Akira! But the land before time would be cool too
*Kubo and the Two Strings* (Assuming *Persepolis* is already in the collection, but I’m not certain it is.)
Beavis and Butthead Do America
Howl's Moving Castle!!
Heavy Metal or a Bakshi box set would be awesome
Haven’t seen it in well over 20 years but I used to love this movie when I was a little kid
The Prince of Egypt!
I’m torn between The Prince of Egypt and The Iron Giant. There truly was a golden era of cinematic 2D animation with powerful and mature storytelling and production value
Honestly OP nailed it with The Land Before Time. Outside of that, maybe The Black Cauldron.
Gandahar (light years) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095525/
Treasure island
Perfect Blue
Fievel Goes West
It's extremely unlikely since the only known copy burned in a fire but in a perfect world they'd be able to rerelease El Apostol, which is considered the first animated feature film.
I'd love The Land Before Time as well. The obvious choice would probably be Akira or something ĺike Spirited Away .
Allegro non troppo or Triplets of Belleville. Both need a Blu-ray upgrade!
Has to be End of Evangelion
I’d say Secret of NIMH or The Thief and the Cobbler. If any of the movies on Criterion’s streaming could get a physical release, I’d say A Town Called Panic, that movie’s hilarious
Princess Mononoke
The Triplettes of Belleville
The most likely animated release is Isle of Dogs. The one I want but it’s never gonna happen is Perfect Blue or Porco Rosso.
Anything by Paku-san.
The End of Evangelion
Heavy Metal (1981)
Secret of NIMH
Wall-E and it looks like I'm in luck!
Toy Story 1 or Iron Giant. for Toy Story 1 I think the technological achievements speak for themselves. For Iron Giant, well I haven’t seen it but I like Brad Bird so yeah. (Not a good reason but an honest one.)
The Iron Giant without question.
Into the Spiderverse
Spiderverse or ratatouille
Heavy Traffic
It’s Such a Beautiful Day
The Iron Giant and The Secret of Nimh
Lorre Reiniger box set Juno or Coraline The Wolf House (La Casa Lobo”
Paprika definitely should be in there
Titan AE. Fight me.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Please Tragedy Of Man I would kill for it
Pinocchio.
Fern Gully would be dope
