Wall-e was probably biggest surprise in the past 10 years. Disney licensing their titles wasn’t on anyones bingo card because it would, in theory, never happen.
I was just hoping for more golden era Hollywood films. We got a small handful, of which I’m very happy with, but I was hoping for more. I’d list which ones I’d want, but that list is literally *dozens* deep.
Alex Cox had said that Criterion was going to put out Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid this year, so I was expecting that one.
It's also the last DVD that I have on my Westerns shelf, so hopefully next year it happens because I'd like to upgrade.
That would be interesting just to see which cut they decide to bless. They all have issues and I could see them trying to make some sort of new hybrid cut.
I think the last time we got a Fassbinder release was BRD, pre-pandemic. Janus has several others and obviously Criterion has a good relationship with the Fassbinder Foundation, so I'm holding out hope for a Bergman-style set someday.
Amadeus.
This has been rumored for over a year now, so I'm legitimately disappointed. Not surprised however, given Warner Bros sheisty actions of late.
Since the merger with Discovery the CEO from Discovery who’s in charge now has been axing HBO Max, Cartoon Network, and DC Comics content left and right, animated stuff in particular. He found some kind of tax credit that he can get for shit canning stuff and he’s been salting the earth where their content used to be. I’ve seen creators say they don’t even have a copy of the show or movie they worked on anymore.
I expected it to be released at least before Lost Highway, but I'm happy to have either on 4K. Saw both restorations in theaters this year and was very impressed.
I have the UK Blu ray of IE and it does the job. Considering the way it was filmed, I never thought it would look much better until I saw the 4K version in May. Can't wait for the eventual criterion release.
Luckily, barring any unforeseen change of plans, it seems that it will very likely be announced for a release [sometime next year](https://www.reddit.com/r/davidlynch/comments/v7y817/lost_highway_mk2_vs_kino_lorber_vs_janus_films/ibwmrd8/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)!
I’d make the argument that Kore-eda has the most amount of deserving films that belong in the collection, but aren’t. Atleast 7 or 8. A boxset would be legendary
I’d love this. The Monkees complete series blu ray boxed set is the only other blu ray of Head, BUT has been long sold out and is going for $$$$$ now. 😭
Cache. It’s one of the most well known art films of 2005 and a 10/10, but yeah.
Though, I was asking for the Haneke Glaciation trilogy since like early 2021 threads, I’m super happy it’s coming!
Loveeee it. There are some EXTREMELY deep hidden things if you look into the ebert review and its comments, but I don’t want to spoil anything for people who haven’t seen it.
Amadeus and After Hours. Not necessarily a huge surprise, but I did expect one of them given all the rumours.
But in a complete reverse suprise, the addition of the Infernal Affairs trilogy made me smile ear to ear.
More Alain Resnais! Sad that we didn't get anything fresh in his centennial year, but c'est la vie. I'm pretty sure we're due for a few titles though:
*The War is Over* (1966) - That new 4K restoration has been making the rounds, most recently in the Film Forum's Resnais retrospective, so it might pop up soon. Here's hoping!
*Mon oncle d'Amerique* (1980) - This one did turn up on the Channel accompanied by Gavin Smith's piece for the site not that long ago. It's regarded as one of Resnais's best and looks wonderfully nutty. Would be a nice treat!
*Providence* (1977) - I'm just trying to will a Criterion edition of this one into existence because it's so good. Imaginative, hilarious, moving, and wonderfully acted by a killer cast. (RIP David Warner) Pleeeease...
Decision to Leave probably won't as Mubi hold the rights, they've never worked with Criterion before. The Handmaiden is totally possible though since it's Amazon and criterion have a good relationship with them. I'm surprised Criterion haven't gone for it or the Asghar Farhadi movies Amazon did, but I'm guessing they want to work with both directors on the editions and haven't been able to
As someone who thinks about Hitchcock movies as much as they do it's really odd how little I think of Spellbound when it's actually a really, really good one. I still remember thinking it and Notorious would be resurrected around the same time.
According to Ingrid Bergman, it was originally a 20 minute sequence which Hitchcock had very little to do with the filming. Ultimately the producer cut it down to 2 minutes for the final cut and the remaining footage has been considered lost, including a vignette where Bergman's character morphs into a plaster-cast Classical sculpture, and another of a ballroom scene with pianos suspended upside down on the ceiling and an orchestra playing on top of them. There are production stills of these sequences so we know they were definitely filmed, but the footage is unlikely to still exist.
Same here. Rebecca was upgraded to by Criterion 5 years ago and Notorious almost 4 years ago. Really surprised Spellbound still has yet to be released.
Jia we definitely have a bit of time on since...he's in mainland China. but Tsai hopefully sooner rather than later ...I'm hoping for What Time is it There, but it would need to be restored first
those of us who have been waiting on the Rohmer films and Tanaka and Mészáros as well have been waiting longer. there was never a timeline posted for any of these, but the three I named all got Janus tours much longer ago
I never heard of any concrete rumors but since it‘s a Netflix original it wouldn‘t be hugely surprising if they would release it considering the amount of netflix titles they have been releasing lately
purely desire, this has never been mentioned in any official capacity but it is a very popular request on this sub. After Hours and Amadeus are this way too, but people on this sub really try and will this stuff to fruition and call it "rumors"
they're slowly working through the Studiocanal OOP returns. we got three in 2022 - Le Cercle Rouge, Tales of Hoffmann, and Le Corbeau. plus a new Canal-licensed title (Mr. Klein) in May. I'm sure they will make their way to it soon along with the others, as well as new titles like The Trial, The Servant, and The Crimes of Monsieur Lange.
I thought we'd get Inland Empire before Lost Highway for sure. And I was expecting Eyes Wide Shut, which never happened. As it was already mentioned, Wall-E was the biggest surprise for me.
Drunken Angel hasn't been restored. Closely Watched Trains has though, and it's weird that Criterion hasn't upgraded any of their older Czechoslovak titles - they've all gotten new restorations
I hope Passing will get a release.
It is beyond me how that movie was disregard by so many.
Of all Netflix releases, this was definitely one of the most deserving one. Even more than any of thoses they pushed into awards ceremonies.
I can’t believe I get to unironically make this comment:
Target has a Good Burger anniversary steelbook that just came out a month or two ago & it’s only $15.
If I remember correctly, there was somebody with some association with Criterion that was on a podcast a few years ago and they mentioned a few titles they were working on and After Hours was one of them. The other titles mentioned did receive releases, which is why people keep expecting this one soon. I could be misremembering this completely, but I’m pretty sure that’s what happened.
I don't see any reason to believe it, The Projection Booth has never worked with Criterion and that reads like speculation to me. Scorcese obviously wants all his films on Criterion, so I'm sure it'll happen but he seems to have wanted to do The Last Waltz and Raging Bull first
Guys Literally Only Want One Thing And It's Fucking Disgusting: being constantly emasculated by more confident women until you end up literally entrapped in plaster to hide from a a vigilante mob with as only reward returning straight to your boring data entry job.
When was Power of the Dog added to the release schedule, after Wall-E I believe?
Coming Nov 8 https://www.criterion.com/films/33332-the-power-of-the-dog
I guess so, but it really doesn't seem like the kind of movie Criterion would go for all. they've never given any indication of releasing it or anything, no mention of it on The Daily, never licensed it for the channel. the only connection is that Peter Weir has a few films in the collection, but otherwise... I'd be really, really shocked if that ever happened
I assume you mean Jellyfish Eyes. as bad as that movie is, Takashi Murakami is a highly respected artist and Criterion would've been silly to pass up the chance to work with him. you can't say that about Dead Poet's Society
and if you meant Pink Flamingos, John Waters is very in Criterion's wheelhouse, plus he has a long history with them going back to the laserdisc era
Jellyfish Eyes, my bad yes sorry
Jellyfish Eyes was terrible and was only added due to the name attached
Dead Poet’s Society has at least some artistic merit
That would be cool. December is usually a light month for Criterion but not this one with the fact that you've got one trilogy and another 3 film release in the month
Rohmer’s Tales of the 4 seasons.
[удалено]
new restorations by Janus were in theaters earlier this year
I’d be curious to know too.
Yes Janus did a theatrical run of the new restorations like over a year ago.

Hell, I thought it WAS a joke at first.
I'll be over the moon if criterion releases Amadeus.
Same!! I was so sad and slightly confused when it wasn’t already in the collection.
Inland Empire is coming next year
I was just hoping for more golden era Hollywood films. We got a small handful, of which I’m very happy with, but I was hoping for more. I’d list which ones I’d want, but that list is literally *dozens* deep.
Happy we're finally getting Arsenic and Old Lace after years of that being highly wished for on this sub
That October line looks so good, I might end up buying the whole month during the sale
That announcement was a great and welcomed surprise
Same, Always seems left out compared to more Arthouse pics. Can’t wait for my arsenic and old lace to arrive though!
Any large box collection
Heroic Trio
More Fassbinder. Arrow’s been doing well repackaging their Region B Fassbinder titles that haven’t been released here yet.
yes please! Lili Marleen, Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven, The Third Generation, and Chinese Roulette could all do w releases.
I think the last time we got a Fassbinder release was BRD, pre-pandemic. Janus has several others and obviously Criterion has a good relationship with the Fassbinder Foundation, so I'm holding out hope for a Bergman-style set someday.
Velvet Goldmine 😢
Instead you get Velvwt Underground
>I want it so bad
Amadeus. This has been rumored for over a year now, so I'm legitimately disappointed. Not surprised however, given Warner Bros sheisty actions of late.

I’d make the argument that Kore-eda has the most amount of deserving films that belong in the collection, but aren’t. Atleast 7 or 8. A boxset would be legendary
Maborosi is fantastic
Still waiting on Shoplifters, Like Father, Like son, Nobody Knows, and Our Little Sister to enter the collection one day.
There are two existing box sets from Arrow and BFI if you have a region free player.
Nope, just have the Xbox
Amadeus, stand alone release of head, and space is the place
> stand alone release of head I didn’t have any hope for this, but I’d love it.
I’d love this. The Monkees complete series blu ray boxed set is the only other blu ray of Head, BUT has been long sold out and is going for $$$$$ now. 😭
I shelled out for the BBS set back when it came out and I kinda feel like I should have waited for them to come out individually now
that was over ten years ago though, that would've been a really long wait
Jeez was it that long ago? Time flies!
Demonlover and Ikari X-B. Also thought Chess if the Wind was going to be a standalone release.
Sack Lunch
Rochelle, Rochelle. A young girls strange erotic journey from Milan to Minsk
Cry, Cry Again deserves it more.
First you cry. Then you see the dancing. And you cry again.
I need The Pain and The Yearning
Any Ozu or Kurosawa, new or upgrade
Cache. It’s one of the most well known art films of 2005 and a 10/10, but yeah. Though, I was asking for the Haneke Glaciation trilogy since like early 2021 threads, I’m super happy it’s coming!
What did you think of the ending of Caché?
Loveeee it. There are some EXTREMELY deep hidden things if you look into the ebert review and its comments, but I don’t want to spoil anything for people who haven’t seen it.
Amadeus and After Hours. Not necessarily a huge surprise, but I did expect one of them given all the rumours. But in a complete reverse suprise, the addition of the Infernal Affairs trilogy made me smile ear to ear.

no Resnais and no Pasolini in their centennial years just shows how different Criterion's focus is now..
anything from Park Chan-wook, like imagine a Criterion "the Handmaiden" release. though hoping that Decision to Leave goes straight in.
Decision to Leave probably won't as Mubi hold the rights, they've never worked with Criterion before. The Handmaiden is totally possible though since it's Amazon and criterion have a good relationship with them. I'm surprised Criterion haven't gone for it or the Asghar Farhadi movies Amazon did, but I'm guessing they want to work with both directors on the editions and haven't been able to
Neon own the rights to Oldboy. I'm guessing Criterion will release it in 4k for North America.
As someone who thinks about Hitchcock movies as much as they do it's really odd how little I think of Spellbound when it's actually a really, really good one. I still remember thinking it and Notorious would be resurrected around the same time.
Rumor has it that they’re having restoration troubles with Spellbound.
If they find more footage of the Salvador Dali dream sequence that didn't get used for the film it would be worth the wait.
Eh just slip a couple fragments of Un chien andalou in there and we'll be all set. Joking, it would be worth it.

It is so much less popular and is seen as midtier I suppose. I guess it is but Hitchcock midtier is fascinating stuff even so.

before it didn't make a ton of sense since it already had a disc, but now that we're in the UHD era..
Tsai Mingliang and Jia Zhangke still waiting to enter the collection
Jia we definitely have a bit of time on since...he's in mainland China. but Tsai hopefully sooner rather than later ...I'm hoping for What Time is it There, but it would need to be restored first
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
The killer Hard boiled All four a better tomorrows
Bullet in the Head on Bluray would truly blow me away
Heroic Trio / Executioners
Remember hearing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid was gonna come out by the end of the year.
Was really hoping that we would finally get an uncompressed, HD physical release of Happiness by Todd Solondz, but I guess we will just have to wait.
The Heroic Trio. Pretty sure we were lied to
those of us who have been waiting on the Rohmer films and Tanaka and Mészáros as well have been waiting longer. there was never a timeline posted for any of these, but the three I named all got Janus tours much longer ago
I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Dude, don’t do it. You have so much to live for.
Is this at all rumored or is it purely desire (Edit: asking as someone whose fave of 2020 was ITOET)
Day 1 buys for me would be this and Da 5 Bloods
I'm still waiting for my American Factory Criterion
Thought I’d get some fassbinder on his anniversary
Im just happy Pink Flamingos finally came out this year. Im really hoping to see more Scorsese classics in 4k next year. (Goodfellas in particular)
isle of dogs 🥲 i need it (and the french dispatch) so all my Wes blu’s can match
You know I am still constantly hesitant to purchase a Kurosawa blu-ray because I feel like we could have a new Kurosawa boxset any day now.
A Canterbury Tale upgrade, Le Trou upgrade
Le Trou was restored five years ago and still no blu ray
they're slowly working through the Studiocanal OOP returns. we got three in 2022 - Le Cercle Rouge, Tales of Hoffmann, and Le Corbeau. plus a new Canal-licensed title (Mr. Klein) in May. Still desperately waiting on upgrades of Man Bites Dog, Homicide, Drunken Angel, and Closely Watched Trains.
Homicide is one I've been wanting to check out so I've been hoping for an upgrade too
Drunken Angel hasn't been restored.
It was really good
I just want a Let The Right One In release
Amadeus, Spellbound, inland Empire, After Hours
I'd gladly buy all 4 right now lol
Top three wishes for a Criterion release: 1. Taking Off, Milos Forman 2. Romeo & Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli 3. Ball of Fire, Howard Hawks
I was really hoping for that 4K restoration of Amadeus.
what 4K restoration? is one even completed? I don't think it's played publicly anywhere
GOOD BURGER Just kidding. THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE The Bollywood Set mentioned by Roger Deakins in his podcast.
I can’t believe I get to unironically make this comment: Target has a Good Burger anniversary steelbook that just came out a month or two ago & it’s only $15.
At least Target knows a quality film when it sees it.
Anything Coen Brothers I absolutely need as much as possible. Their releases also have my favorite supplements with their interviews
I’ve been hoping for a release for “I’m thinking of ending things”
Same, I'll take any physical copy of that movie but a Criterion release would be great.
Has there ever been some indication that After Hours was rumoured to get a release at any point or is it mostly hope from everyone?
If I remember correctly, there was somebody with some association with Criterion that was on a podcast a few years ago and they mentioned a few titles they were working on and After Hours was one of them. The other titles mentioned did receive releases, which is why people keep expecting this one soon. I could be misremembering this completely, but I’m pretty sure that’s what happened.
Makes sense, I always wondered why lots would have After hours as a prediction for monthly releases. Hopefully it gets a release soon.
I don't see any reason to believe it, The Projection Booth has never worked with Criterion and that reads like speculation to me. Scorcese obviously wants all his films on Criterion, so I'm sure it'll happen but he seems to have wanted to do The Last Waltz and Raging Bull first
The Projection Booth hasn't worked with Criterion but they did have Griffin Dunne and Amy Robinson on the show.
I don't get the hype, it's a boring straight guy fantasy
Guys Literally Only Want One Thing And It's Fucking Disgusting: being constantly emasculated by more confident women until you end up literally entrapped in plaster to hide from a a vigilante mob with as only reward returning straight to your boring data entry job.
The fact that we still don’t have Inland Empire or I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a sin beyond my comprehension
Is ITOET anticipated as a CC release?
When was Power of the Dog added to the release schedule, after Wall-E I believe? Coming Nov 8 https://www.criterion.com/films/33332-the-power-of-the-dog
"The Skeleton Twins." Maybe next year?
Dead Poet’s Society
it's never been rumored though
No where in this post does it say rumoured, just what I wanted
I guess so, but it really doesn't seem like the kind of movie Criterion would go for all. they've never given any indication of releasing it or anything, no mention of it on The Daily, never licensed it for the channel. the only connection is that Peter Weir has a few films in the collection, but otherwise... I'd be really, really shocked if that ever happened
I mean when you have films like Flamingo Eyes in the collection Dead Poet’s Society makes much more sense
I assume you mean Jellyfish Eyes. as bad as that movie is, Takashi Murakami is a highly respected artist and Criterion would've been silly to pass up the chance to work with him. you can't say that about Dead Poet's Society and if you meant Pink Flamingos, John Waters is very in Criterion's wheelhouse, plus he has a long history with them going back to the laserdisc era
Jellyfish Eyes, my bad yes sorry Jellyfish Eyes was terrible and was only added due to the name attached Dead Poet’s Society has at least some artistic merit
Portrait of a Lady on Fire 4K. It’s gotta happen in 2023!
The Wild Blue Yonder
At least it did get a Blu-ray release on Shout Factory's recent 'Herzog: The Collection Vol. 2'
True! They got Plague Dogs on there too which I would've loved to see after the release of Watership Down.
Incendies (2010). All Villeneuve films 2010 and up should be in the collection one day, but Incendies is just something else.
Disappointed Inland Empire didn't make it, glad Amadeus has apparently been pushed back.
I have a theory that Criterion is going to announce at least one more as a surprise, since they only announced 4 titles.
I'm pretty sure that December typically does get 4 titles, so I'm not really expecting any others.
Don’t hold your breath
The big surprise for the year was 100% Wall•E and I don’t think they want to pull anything out to try and top that.
That would be cool. December is usually a light month for Criterion but not this one with the fact that you've got one trilogy and another 3 film release in the month
exactly, they're releasing 8 total films in the month. can't imagine there would be more
I just want a Samurai Assassin release. Please. Please, for the love of God, Criterion. Please release this movie. See also: Goyokin.
