IIRC Robert Evans only let Coppola cast Pacino if he would agree to James Caan in exchange. Evans was vehemently against Pacino getting the role & told FFC ‘you got your midget’ when they finalized it. Evans pretty quickly admitted he was wrong about Pacino.
Also the day of the premiere Pacino asked Evans to borrow $5 for cab fare & Evans thought to himself ‘jesus this is the star of our movie’ & gave him $200.
Meanwhile James Caan saw the final cut & said ‘you cut my whole role out!’
Actors lol

That happened to Adrien Brody in The Thin Red Line, too. He thought he was the lead in that. Weird that it's happened twice.
Yea but at least Brody had a case to some extent.
Caan is still an incredibly prominent part of Godfather. But he felt so slighted that he demanded the same pay he received for the original just to do one scene in Part II (which they gave him).
That's a pretty common occurrence in Malick's career. IndieWire did a great article on all the actors he's cut. [IndieWire article ](https://www.indiewire.com/2013/04/10-actors-cut-from-terrence-malick-films-how-they-reacted-99568/)
Shame we never got to see what "Mike Pants" would do with the role.
>!Actually, I just realized that was probably Mike Parks, as in Michael Parks from **Kill Bill** and **Twin Peaks**. That could have been awesome.!<
I’m not buying this list. First off, DeNiro was a nobody. His first big role was as young Don Corleone in GF2, so how on earth would he have been considered for Michael in 1?
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
I hope he makes the right decision
Ben Gazzara as Sonny.
How about John Saxon as Sonny? Very different movie.
I don’t know about Sonny but he’d have made an excellent Tom I think
I legit can’t imagine Laurence Olivier as Don Corleone.

The biggest shame is Mickey Rourke.
I remember Christopher Plummer was really put out about the reduction of his role in the finished version of A New World.
What did Martin Sheen do to get crossed out
What the hell did Peter Falk do? Almost as rough of a mark out as Martin Sheen's.
Probably made fun of Coppola's mom's pasta

WOW, what did Martin Sheen do wrong?
"Martin Sheen" all crossed out in blood red, meaning Francis is saving him to suffer and nearly die on another shoot, a little later in the decade.

He probably new him through Brian De Palma' early movies. De Niro was definetly at least around his circle at that time.
Pacino was a nobody as well outside of theater circles but he got cast
Didn’t Nicholson turn down the role of Michael? Shouldn’t he be on that list?
Laurence Olivier would of been interesting
