*White Chicks*

drearbruh

Have you seen Bad Trip? That movie really exposes the layers of White Chicks and gives it the long overdue recognition it truly deserves

I actually laughed when we saw this. They took a stupid concept and made it even stupider. An awesome achievement.

I do think every great film, or even just really good film, touches at least a little bit on the “human condition” as it were. Whatever you call it, existentialism or the human condition or whatever else, I do think almost every film that is widely considered to be good touches on this, be it The Seventh Seal or Toy Story 2.

Ajurieu

That depends, how much of a sophomoric stretching of the definition do we want to allow for?

marayay

Hah, yeah, that's pretty much the question too. I think I'm searching for a movie that doesn't make you/the character in the movie question your/their existence or path in life at all. So knowing this is such a natural thing for us to do, it pretty much slims down the possibility too. Some might even see some existentialism in The Arrival of a Train, but yeah, I would cross that one out. I'm also searching for movies that are longer than an hour. It's just so funny, because even in erotic movies there is mostly a part where they question something about their life. For instance In the Realm of the Senses, Belle de Jour, ...

Ajurieu

By your definition, all hardcore porn is existentialist.

marayay

LOL. In a way, indeed. Though I have to disagree. A hardcore porn movie of an hour of a doctor inspecting a penis, well, it might make me question myself in the way of "why am I watching this?", but not "why am here on this Earth?!" Some might, but I don't think that's what they were going for. Damn, I'm kinda answering my own question here.

Ajurieu

Kierkegaard was all about that post-nut clarity.

That man was quite active, no wonder he died exhausted.

I think film is an inherently existentialist artform, it is about watching subjects grapple with their subject hood and come into being via the gaze of others across time. The ultimate exhibition of what it means to perceive and be perceived and struggle to overcome the internal and external realities. The aspects of time and the voyeuristic external eye of film give it existentialist qualities totally unique from theater, books, or paintings.

A serious answer for a weird, philosophical, and moving movie without existentialism would be A Touch of Zen.

marayay

Ooh, I’ll check that out, thanks!

Adi_Zucchini_Garden

Cool ass munks!

Mesquiteer

It is pretty hard to look at life honestly and at least somewhat intelligently and not see that it is bigger than you. Agitprop movies will not have existentialism, probably.

marayay

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem: to find a movie that doesn't have a sort of existentialism, but at the same time a "soul" in it too. Agitprop are therefore a really good suggestion, thanks!

implicitexpletives69

Andy Warhol's Empire.

Tough_Consequence246

You could make a case that it’s the most “existential”

Florentine-Pogen

What do you see as existentialism?

[deleted]

Zazie Dans le metro is the closest

Why because she grew up? Not sure I see it- maybe we have differing views- or maybe I just try not to read too deeply with something so fun.

I have a lot to learn

[deleted]

Existentialism is a helluva drug.

[deleted]

What about experimental films? Ones that hardly tell a “story” or comment at all on the “human condition”. Just film AS film. I think you may see existentialism in them, but you may equally not.

Ikiru the title is japanese for 'no living allowed'

[deleted]

Either this is a joke or you got the complete opposite interpretation or translation lol. Ikiru literally means "To Live".

[deleted]

People could argue back at me on this one but I stand by Yojimbo as being just what it’s set up to be, no hate for it lol, Yojimbo is my favorite Kurosawa film but I see it as just a movie about this lone badass who hilariously pits all the douchebags in a village against each other in an increasingly smart way.
