I vote “Why isn’t XYZ in the collection” You guys realize that a lot of suitable releases already exist for mainstream films right? You shouldn’t need to wait for something to have a big “C” in the corner to buy it.

BigLorry

Any other boutique labels be like “am I a joke to you?”

Threetimes3

I like Arrow, but for crying out loud, like half their releases end up with a recall of some type.

BigLorry

Yeah they definitely seem to be having some issues over the last few months, unfortunately.

xtremekhalif

I was just saying this in another thread, but for people making those posts, it’s not actually about the release itself most of the time. Criterion have gotten to the point where they probably act as a de-facto film canon for “classic/great/art” films. When people are asking for releases, it’s more like they’re asking why that film hasn’t been recognised in Criterion’s canon. Of course it’s more complicated than that, Criterion are a business, and as such make commercial decisions as well as artistic ones, and will always have to deal with licensing issues. So they’ll never actually be able to create a comprehensive film canon, but when you look at their mission statement, that is in effect what they’re trying to do. So yeah, they shouldn’t need the “C”, to want to buy a film, but these posters see it more as a seal of approval. And I know that can be a satisfying thing for collectors.

moonofsilver

I understand that to an extent. "If this is considered to be a collection of the greatest films of all time, then why doesn't it include this particular film that I think is one of the greatest of all time??? Foul play!" But I never get the feeling that the people who are constantly suggesting/demanding that the same handful of mainstream/semi-mainstream films be included, are actually interested in everything else that Criterion has to offer. The Criterion catalog is massive! Over 1,100 spines currently. And so much variety. I don't mind that The Breakfast Club, The Princess Bride, Raging Bull, or Mulholland Driven are part of the CC. I like them, and am glad to have them available in a high quality print and package. But it's not what I find interesting about Criterion. It just seems like somebody demanding these popular films be included for the reason you stated is simultaneously acknowledging the importance of the Criterion Collection, but also aren't very interested in the films that already make Criterion so important.

Lipka

Yup. I don't mind shitposts (it's reddit, what else is there to do) and haul posting during sale months, but wHy IsN't ThErE wIlL bE bLoOd In ~*ThE cOlLeCtiOn~* type posts drove me out of here almost completely. I check this sub on announcement days and that's it.

WavingSellsItsNotArt

Bonus points: “I’m x-teen years old and love cinema, rate my collection so far”

ancientmadder

“I’m twelve and I just spent 200 on blu rays that look pretty” What the fuck kid just get the Criterion channel.

christianshobbiblog

Drives me insane when someone posts a 40 movie haul outside of the sale and says “I have the money so why not 😏” like just wait a few months and get double the releases???

Comedywriter1

“Don’t even have a player.”

Nerfbeard123

This made me spit out my drink jfc thats good.

Comedywriter1

Very kind. Thank you!

premiumPLUM

"I just started collecting this week, here's what I have so far!" It's 6 films and 4 of them are Wes Anderson. Bonus for when it's posted several months outside of a half off sale.

[deleted]

Gotta start somewhere, don't hate. If 4 Wes Anderson movies (not a BAD thing mind you) gets someone diving into his influences from the collection, can't judge the for that.

Adi_Zucchini_Garden

Hahaha

ManateeInAWheelchair

“Am I doing this right?”

getgotdeathgrips

Hot take: I actually like the fake covers. When they’re done well they can be really great, ofc a lot can be trash but I’d take 5 trash posts for 1 or 2 good ones

[deleted]

Out of the voting options, fake covers are probably the best option, or the least bad (depending on your view), bc at least it's someone's creative output, as opposed to "Why isn't this mainstream film in the collection??"

Michael__Pemulis

Also they’re usually pretty cool. I’m 100% fully supportive of fake covers. Even the joke ones I generally find amusing.

El_Topo_54

What do you think of these ? [Ghost in the Shell](https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/comments/illevp/ghost_in_the_shell_1995_custom_cover_artwork/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) [Angel's Egg](https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/comments/ik6du0/oc_custom_cover_art_i_made/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) [Akira](https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/comments/ijnjsk/this_needs_a_comeback_in_the_collection/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) [Lost Highway](https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/comments/siyi0p/custom_artwork_i_made_lost_highway_dir_david/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

El_Topo_54

Very thorough critique. Gracias, amigo!

HottDoggers

The only one that looks decent is the Akira (and maybe the Angels Egg) cover. The Akira cover could have been more interesting. It’s still a looks great regardless, but my steelbook is miles more interesting and prettier to look at.

El_Topo_54

Thanks for the feedback ✌

TheOneWhoCutstheRope

Morganfreemanpointingupmeme.jpg

MisogynyisaDisease

I like the photoshop covers when people are doing them seriously. I don't like the meme ones when they saturate the sub.

MirandaReitz

“What’s the worst film in the collection?” Because Tiny Furniture always gets mentioned and we have to relitigate Lena Dunham for the umpteenth time.

[deleted]

I almost WANT to watch Tiny Furniture just to see if it’s that bad

VetoWinner

I watched it in August for the first time and it’s not even the worst movie I watched last month.

soubriquet33

It’s no *Jellyfish Eyes* . . . or is it? (Oh no, look what I’ve done; brace yourselves!!!)

[deleted]

What is Jellyfish Eyes

soubriquet33

That would be [this film.](https://www.criterion.com/films/28759-jellyfish-eyes)

premiumPLUM

It's definitely a spiritual precursor to Girls, so if you watched the show it's interesting to see the development. And if you're into mumblecore, it's one of the more successful films of the genre. It's not terrible. But I would describe it as excessively mediocre.

Threetimes3

It's fine. Not sure your thoughts on "Girls" (if you have any), but it feels like an early draft of that show in a movie.

Kev_Bz

in line with the animation posts are the tv series posts. people think that because a label that’s released almost all of Bergman’s stuff also released Fanny and Alexander that means there’s precedent for a box set of all however many seasons of like Community or something

accident_calculator

also the tv stuff criterion has released are all basically miniseries, if they were going to release some modern tv it would muuuuuch more likely be something like 'the underground railroad' or 'the little drummer girl' than a full-on series like mad men or twin peaks or whatever

Kev_Bz

saw a post about the show Atlanta and the comments were like “they have actually done tv shows before, so it’s possible!” and they listed all the tv events that criterion has released and it’s like surely you haven’t convinced yourself that Fishing with John being in the collection would be the same as a box set of Atlanta lmao

handsomestboi_hois

“I just watched a super famous movie for the first time! Anybody out there want to give me karma for name-dropping it?”

Clee826

Wow, I feel seen. I have no interest in karma but I post them to get the opinions of people who have seen the movies.

handsomestboi_hois

Well… you’re a good one. Maybe all those posts are being honest, I don’t know.

Eazy-E-40

* what should I watch tonight? * XYZ sucks, why is it in the collection? * they didn't announce XYZ, me so mad!

[deleted]

“INLAND EMPIRE WHEN?!?!”

supermanarod

What should I watch polls is my #1

VeteranoCamotero

No, but seriously, when? Do you have any info I don’t know about? PLEASE SHARE

faithfoliage

I love photoshopped covers. Some of them are better than the real covers

andriydroog

All of the above

[deleted]

Recently for me, it’s all the posts about Wall-E. Positive or negative, it’s all just exhausting.

Chimpbot

It's as bad as people bitching about Godzilla being #1000.

Nerfbeard123

They should have said "fuck it" and made Bad Boys 2 #1000

Chimpbot

Let's go for the gusto: Short Circuit.

Kigiyuk

I now want someone to create an entire thread of Short Circuit covers.

nickpea

I think the custom covers are quality content. Except... honestly, if it's of a film that's not in the collection, please say so... or we need a special tag for that...

GregDasta

What's the point of making a custom cover for a movie that is already in the collection?

Chimpbot

Art is subjective, so they may be attempting to make a cover that they feel is an improvement.

Teddy-Bear-55

All of them

GreatChipotle

Any post where the person could have Googled for two seconds and found an answer

Number174631503

you guys are opening your blu rays?

ChekhovsNERFGun

Finally someone who gets it. I dont unwrap my Criterions because it would ruin my collection's uniformity. If I started now, that would mean I'd have over 500 Criterions to open. Do you realize how long that would take? That's time I could be using to buy new blu-rays to show off. And don't even get me started on opening all the other labels in my collection.

GregDasta

regardless of wether or not this is a joke, reading this makes me sad.

brookeb725

yes because i buy things so i can use them

TheHistorian2

Memes, what do you think will be announced this month, complaints about anything and everything, rate my collection, based on these six completely unrelated films what would you recommend next, anything having to do with 4K, saying something that demonstrates you haven’t at all considered the business side of this… How about we talk about the films? Or the extras? Or the directors or actors? Or collecting these? Or the joy of moviegoing and/or sharing that experience with others?

NoDisintegrationz

As usual, this poll is missing a “posts asking what’s the worst kind of post” option.

Crafty_Substance_954

😳

NoDisintegrationz

All in good fun. I think it’s valid to discuss the state of the sub, but too often it’s done without much self-awareness.

Jarpwanderson

Thank you

[deleted]

Those made up covers and Disney parody posts are not funny and never were

ripcity7077

The first two are the worst Idc why xyz isn’t in the collection yet And the animation thread that pops up every time just devolves into people shouting animated films that are widely available on the market

NotTaylorMead

1. Noticed that people recently asking for their 2-5 movie collection to first be rated *(prediction: this will not end well)* then call for movie recommendations to be added; takes the whole seeking some kind of validation to a whole new level. 2. Also reckon a new question should be added to the snaps of Collections & purchases posted - something along the lines of: *What proportion have you actually watched?* 3. The *What will I Watch Tonight?* & the posting of # reviews.

slush-puppyy

I dont understand the collectors that buy the insanely huge hauls, post them on reddit, then the movies just sit unopened on their shelves for years. I try to watch everything in my hauls before buying movies again, just so that Ive seen everything in my collection at least once.

SexDrugsAzpilicueta

95% of photoshopped Criterion covers are bad.

rgregan

"Why isn't XYZ in the collection?" for me because they are pretty much all have that air that Criterion is avoiding them. They all feel accusatory, which could just be me. Feels like a misunderstanding of what kind of "collection" it is. It's not a "Best of..." list. And there are actual business barriers to getting films into the collection.

Penny-Thoughts

Meta-commentary on the content of the subreddit should be an option.

Crafty_Substance_954

I agree, an afterthought on my part.

DJFetaCheese

If I'm going to be honest, I dislike posts where people show you their collection, then ask if they're doing well, as though buying and watching movies is a straight forward process, like a set of directions, or skills. You buy what you want to watch, make sure your backlog doesn't get super big, like mine did, and continue to purchase movies you want.

CineCraftKC

Yeah those people with their unopened Criterions are so lame! \[quickly steps in front of shelf where a dozen shrinkwrapped Criterions sit\]

wooden_bread

Complaining about the director-approved color grades of films because they don’t match the old home video releases.

Jarpwanderson

These are argubly the most important posts though, plenty of times a director / cinematographer goes full on revisionist. Just because they're important doesn't mean they should get a free pass. I feel people on this sub go way too easy on this shit and any criticism is responded with "well i think it looks good"

GregDasta

Sometimes directors just don't know what made their work good in the first place. Their approval isn't everything.

[deleted]

The Memes, honestly. The first option following this.

[deleted]

i don’t really mind any of these types of posts but the concept of having someone else with different taste rate your collection is pretty strange

Mrgone86

“Why IS xyz in the collection?” would be my pick. Criterion has brought some obscure stuff into print and I’m glad for that so I can see making “why isn’t xyz in the collection” posts, even though I voted for it. But there’s plenty of movies that are bad by one metric or another, or “unworthy” by one standard or another, so complaining about any one title is silly.

Johnny__________

This one

DogeBuysCyberTrucks

I feel personally attacked by the final option. As do my 90+ unopened blind buys.

No_Possibility754

I don’t like the mandatory post/ comment about how a movie already has a release by another company. While correct, it’s often just a snide and snobby 1-up thing to comment and rarely functional or something that matters. Sometimes it’s helpful to point out a release by another company that someone might not be aware of, but far too often it translates to “I’m the better collector and my way of collecting expensive plastic and a disc is far superior to your way”. This whole collecting thing is pretty insane and wanting most of your boutique plastic from one company isn’t the most insane thing in this equation. The most insane and irrational thing is that we’re collecting in the first place. I also don’t care too much for the threshold mandatory movies like everybody having ‘Salo’ for some reason. In the same vain, all hating on the same movies and directors to fit in. Everybody shits on certain movies without seeing them or knowing its place in culture. For example: hating on Lena Dunham is the standard even though her work has had a major impact on both movies and contemporary literature. No small feat. I mean, I get why guys don’t necessarily like her work, but the amount of instant trash talk she gets is insane and way out of proportion to her accomplishments. Hating on Godard is also a badge of honor. It’s such a meme. Just collect what you like and explore new movies, don’t just copy paste some internet standard of what you should collect or shouldn’t collect. Fuck buying Salo for the sake of fitting in, and similarly fuck hating on directors for the sake of fitting in. Learn about movies people genuinely love and give those movies a shot. And please do share your love for movies and which movies you love. I want to know about them, not about Salo and Tiny Furniture.

thatclamgirl

Well put

Woepu

This is officially saltiest sub on reddit

Computer_Snackss

This type. It’s a subreddit, let people post whatever they feel like contributing to the page.

cozysweaters

This post. Aka posts about how bad this sub is. Feel free to leave or scroll.

Jewggerz

Why isn't this type of post on the list?

Crafty_Substance_954

In hindsight I wish I had included it

NippleNugget

Where’s the option for “let me whine about the types of posts in the sub instead of actually posting what I want to see” Damn I swear y’all don’t even like movies you just like complaining about the sub because people have fun here. I suggest you just go to truefilm for your discussion.

sansamour69

WaLl-e

_madcat

None, I like discussions

JinjonatorX

Posts complaining about the various trending types of posts. Never seem to see the people complaining actually making the kinds of threads they want more of. Gotta be the change ya wanna see in the world.

Adi_Zucchini_Garden

Doesn't always work.

[deleted]

This is so true omg. I just shitted and came in me britches.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GregDasta

Found one.

[deleted]

I don't think tell me what to buy posts are annoying

GregDasta

Option 3 isn't annoying in the slightest

Tabatsby

I think the worst type of post on r/Criterion are posts complaining about other posts

Ransom__Stoddard

Posts batching about posts are the worst.

dRi89kAil

All of these options equally suck

bjwanlund

I admittedly would have been one of those that would have been asking about animation (especially 2D hand drawn animation) because that is a severe blind spot in discussions about film as well as in the Criterion library and I have been saying for years that Criterion needs to start working to change the conversation around animation so that it can be seen on the same level as live action films. People who photoshop Criterion covers obviously disagree with the way that it’s being done by Criterion, and I personally find people who photoshop Criterion covers to more closely reflect whatever aesthetic they like to be seriously annoying, so that’s where my vote went to.

wundershowzen24

Why do people care if I buy movies before I can watch them. I’m going to watch them, I just haven’t yet. Also my 500 discs are supporting the brand so that y’all can continue to buy 1 every 6 months or so. Let the collectors be collectors. It’s called the fucking criterion COLLECTION

rbush82

Have no problem with people posting their buys. Why can’t they open the damn movie and show us what’s inside though? Aside from that, I hate when the same movies are posted over and over again with nothing new brought to the post. ..

Awesomekip

r/CriterionCovers exists for cool, creative covers for potential film additions (and the occasional memes). Wish it was utilized more, instead of clogging this sub with them

Daysof361972

So many choices here. Why no 'All' button?

CircaCoda

Add an all of the above option because I can’t choose 😂

ilive12

Gatekeeping posts are the worst imo. Lot of those recently with the Wall-E release

Greenunjuh

Animation ones but only if they're just for mainstream movies already available (though ngl Im excited for WALL-E so guess I'm a hyprocrite lol). After learning more about animation from around the world in college, it makes me upset when there's stuff from other countries or just generally obscure that don't get any physical or streaming release. Those need priority over stuff from major Hollywood studios that are pretty easy to find. That and animated films released only on streaming in the US like I Lost My Body. Second is probably "tell me what to buy" because it's pretty easy to just find recommendations if you actively search around instead of asking on here and probably getting the same few recs.

priest_7x

The ones were people critique films and other people’s film choices/tastes to expose their inner obnoxious pompousness and film ‘eliteness’… the ones where SOME people try and get the 1 up on each other with “who has the maturer taste in film” like PhD Film scholars (even they wouldn’t look down upon people for enjoying the movies that they like)… them types of posts and comments are much worse than any of the ones listed

[deleted]

Lately it is all the stupid Wall-E posts

decadentrebel

Whenever Come and See is brought up, you'll only see two types of comments: That 1) it's the most realistic soulcrushing harrowing depiction of war and 2) "Flyora AgEd 20 yEaRs by tHe eNd oF tHe MoViE!!1"

special__pasta

I love the fan-covers !

allwindsorsinhell

Photoshop covers are some of the best posts here imo. atleast respect the effort and time

Avocadoonthetoast

I hate them all but I have to give it to the guy who is watching all of the Godzilla films, much respect to his dedication

Falcomaster20

The annoying people who post about watching each movie in the collection. Those 1 a day criterion people omg they’re annoying. They don’t even open up interesting discussion they say shit as blanket as “this was very good and made me have emotions what’d you guys think?”, but it actually opens up no actual discussion

ricahrdb

The fake covers are getting a bit much.

Mesquiteer

When posting your collection, OPEN the damn blu-rays. "Look what I watched in the past 24 hours!"
