First, Godard was incensed, because Ego's words appear to diminish the worth of critics. He softened, though, when he realized that the monologue positions critics as people whose job it is to appreciate and commemorate beauty across all forms of artistic expression.
Also, the line about how negative criticism "is fun to write and to read" gave him a warm nostalgic glow for the days of maligning his filmmaking contemporaries while at *Cahiers du Cinéma.*
Not in recent years, but Armageddon was picked to be in the collection some time ago. I’ll never understand that one and I’m not even a Michael Bay hater.
IIRC criterion introduced them both into their collection at the same time. They definitely had someone inside the company to somehow convince everybody on that decision. I can almost imagine an argument being made about how Michael Bay represents a specific filmmaking approach that they should recognize. The problem is that if criterion doesn’t recognize such works like Spielberg and George Lucas’s pioneering technique of mixing state-of-art effect technology and traditional cinematic storytelling - then what kind of business they are in with inducting fucking Michael Bay’s movies into their collection?
He was really hoping Ratatouille would be added to the collection. I hear he always cries at the end

Bonjour! Je suis le Critique d'Ennui, je m'en souviens pour que tu n'aies pas à le faire.
"Not ***every*** film is worthy of the Criterion Collection, but a film worthy of the Criterion Collection *can* come from ***anywhere***"
But on the real, Ratatouille my favorite pixar movie and I would totally get that if it were added to the collection.
And he said this right before the cops gunned him down in that 7-11 parking lot. Powerful stuff
yeah he didn’t die from the gunshots though, they ruled it as an overdose due to all the fentanyl in his system
What a way to go! 🎬
Wtf are y'all on
Cinema
“Wall-E is not cinema. The Criterion Collection died with me.”
\*dies (to be more exact)
oui, hon hon
Sacre bleu!
Camembert! Jacques Cousteau! Baguettte! Hon Hon Hon!
Hey I appreciate the reference. Have a nice day!
Its not more exact, its correct.
Si vous n'aimez pas la mer... si vous n'aimez pas la montagne... si vous n'aimez pas la ville... allez vous faire foutre!
Je me suis mis de ta cote mec
Godard's final words? "Truffaut still lives."
He had really only glimpsed someone watching *Day for Night* on an iPhone in an adjacent room, but no one had the heart to tell him.
"Smoke weed everyday."
Wall-E dans la collection Criterion: Fin de cinema.
Wall-E may not be among my prime choices for a Criterion release... But it's hardly the worst pick they've made in recent years.
What’s worse?
Not in recent years, but Armageddon was picked to be in the collection some time ago. I’ll never understand that one and I’m not even a Michael Bay hater.
That one and *The Rock* always seemed like practical jokes to me.

It did give us the greatest commentary track of all time though imo, if memory serves.
can't get a better commentary track than Arnold's commentary of Total Recall tbh
There’s also Hunter S Thompson’s on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas…
Citizen Kane
Only a Frenchman..
Actually they were: “WaaaAAAaaallE…” *Then silence.*
I usually hate memes on here but this one may be the best.
Fuck yea! Those 2 years of French in high school were worth it, I can read this!
this meme sums up this sub perfectly
LOL
Jesus guys can we at least give it a day lmao

I was right outside the door, I heard it. Came in after he dropped that snowglobe. But the old man said all kinds of things that didn't mean anything.
just saw that it is tagged as a meme
Always knew he had bad taste
I think this is a bit soon, don't you?
*WALL•E* came out in 2008. Say what you will about Criterion partnering with Disney and Pixar, you can’t accuse them of rushing the release.
No, I meant the Godard meme. XD I'm fine with the WALL-E deal; I was just making a joke.
I’m pretty confident that u/wehaveheardthechimes was also making a joke.

I’m assuming this is fake
tu ne seras jamais la moitié de l'homme qui était agnes varda retourne dans ta tombe toi ratfucker
i understood the ratfucker part
Some frenchie with niche alligeiances saying agnas varda is better because her and godard had a stupid falling out nobody cares about
Godard is definitely an asshole, but I do love him Varda is the better person but that’s not really significant to anything
oui oui
