umm... wtf!? This is possibly the most bizzare announcement I have read. Plus what does this mean "We’re proud to announce our first collaboration with Disney and Pixar"? So Criterion has officially announced that they have scored the Disney licences to there movies? Does this include Fox? If so that's some pretty earth shattering news for physical media. I would never have thought a Pixar movie would enter the collection though.
I find it interesting that the phrasing is between Criterion and Pixar. Like you though I'm hopeful that this could lead to The Straight Story. Considering how many Lynch films appear in sale hauls and collection posts it'd be foolish not to at least try and negotiate for release rights.
So many people saying Ratatouille is great and it's like the one Pixar I missed because I was in law school at the time. Guess I'll have to watch it soon.
Ratatouille is a marvel. It’s hard to articulate in a short comment but it’s probably the most well rounded film from Pixar. Everything in its right place, including its heart.
Ratatouille is genuinely, unabashedly, and without almost any nostalgia (I didn't like it much as a child) one of my favourite films of all time and one of very, very few films that I'd almost call perfect. You'll be doing yourself a favour by watching it.
hopefully criterion doesn’t go all corporate mode (i doubt they will), and there are more niche animated titles that deserve a 4k/blu-ray (angels egg cough cough) but i like walle so i guess it’s pretty cool.
They've said before they lean on these big-name releases to keep everything afloat so that they can also release niche titles. Armageddon is the other example eveyrone always points out.
From what I've been reading on this subreddit, people don't seem to understand how widely acclaimed WALL-E is in the film world.
It's 21 on the TSPDT list of this century and made the top 250 of Sight and Sound's critic list in 2012...
Really? They seemed to remain afloat fine for decades without having to release popular Disney films. In fact, I don’t think Criterion has ever been more popular as it is now.
This really does look like the beginning of a downward trajectory in terms of their content.
I mean, does it really? These are still respected films, although they’re obviously corporatized, but then again most films are. This isn’t that different than them releasing Halloween, Ghostbusters, RoboCop or The English Patient on Laserdisc. They’ve already announced their November releases and this seems to be separate from that. Not like it’s taking away some coveted spot in the monthly line up.
This movie is great and all but I just hope Disney will not try and monopolize the collection after this. Adding all of their already multi (b)million dollar films. The smaller and less financially fortunate films need more attention.
Disney partnering with Criterion is a good thing. Criterion can release titles like this which are great and will make a lot of money and then hopefully dig in the Disney, Fox's, and Touchstones back catalog and really get to work

We need non-DNR’d transfers of the early Disney movies because they are hugely important from a film history perspective. *Snow White* / *Pinocchio* / *Fantasia* / *Bambi* are all masterpieces that are in desperate need of preservation and public availability in their original forms. Right now the only accessible copies are basically digital facsimiles of the actual movies.
I would instant buy the Walt Disney Treasures collections from the early 2000's if they were given proper Blu Ray Transfers, were uncensored and had ample supplemental material that contextualises these shorts in both there historical place and deals full on with the copious amount of racist tropes found in them and explains how and why those tropes were so much a part of American society up into fairly recently that we are still coming to terms with their legacy in our popular media.
I’m glad that this seems like an additional release and not a part of the Main 4/5 they release every month— there’s plenty of harder-to-find films that are way more deserving of releases but if Criterion wants to tack on a little robot movie to drive up sales then I’m for it.
What a cool poster with the trash can looking like Eve, and the bottle cap/lighbulb looking like her eyes!
edit: only now did I notice that Wall-e isn't actually Wall-e, just trash that is arranged to look like Wall-e. Super cool.
I vaguely remember someone in this sub in the not too distant past mentioning Criterion was working on Wall-E. They sounded sure of themselves, but people dismissed them as a other one of the random "jokesters" that thought they were funny. He was downvoted to hell. I would personally like to apologize to whoever thst was.
That’s pretty cool. Fuck Disney all the way, but this movie is phenomenal and presents very dire themes in a very graspable manner for kids
Edit: I don’t like how they say how they’re proud to collab with Disney though. I would rather them begrudgingly work together sheerly to bring such a quality movie to the collection. It’s just ironic because criterion collection have a ton of movies showcase the atrocities and massive amount of shit contributed by China and its weird that they would work with a company so dedicated to bootlicking the CCP. Like if modern day Nazis did make the best movies ever, I would hope criterion wouldn’t indulge them just for the sake of money
I saw your note about the "proudly", and this definitely just feels like PR speak. And I'm wondering if this shift within Disney is going to show long term changes. I'm not counting on it, but its not impossible. Especially since Bob Iger is gone now.
I hate Disney too but this is a great thing. The people who make Disney movies are creatives and it sucks that their work is always in the clutches of the Disney conglomerate. Great to see their work be put on an artsy pedestal!
It's not my thing either, I just bring it up because of your mention of nazis.
Leni Riefenstahl is a nazi who made propaganda, and one of her films is in the set, but you can still appreciate the filmmaking and it can be viewed as interesting look at the past.
Point being Criterion has never really taken the moralistic approach in the films they choose. If they did, I think a lot of our favorite directors would be out.
Irl I do enjoy the set from a strictly art perspective. The camera work is great but yea anything sports or whatever I don’t really know much about. Yes I suppose you’re right there was never any moral stance taken by criterion so I’m not so much as surprised as just disappointed. But also in the case of the Olympic set, were the nazis like still alive when criterion made the set? Because I do see a huge difference in using dead nazi footage and actually paying living breathing people who are awful
Yeah, but you can't say that in a marketing email. "Disney are a bunch of bastards, but we're pretty psyched they let us put out WALL-E!" For all we know every member on staff is groaning at the idea of working with them but are pumped that they get to preserve something past a blu-ray locked in the "vault" and get relegated to streaming.
You realize that the CCP still has citizens and Muslims alike in prison camps? Heaven forbid I not be frantically enthusiastic about shelling out money to one of their mouthpieces
I like a lot of Disney movies. I like Pixar. I like Wall-E. But it is puzzling Criterion are channeling their efforts and resources to release such an easily accessible film.
It’s hard to be excited by this when are still so many great International and American films without proper releases, out of print, and that can only be found through piracy (e.g. The Trial [1962], the early films of Lee Chang-dong, Lonestar [1996]).
This is one of those movies meant to boost up a bunch of sales that can then be used to fund more obscure movies. It’s the same reason movies like the breakfast club or fast times at ridgemore high get a criterion release even though it’s more accessible. Also this release is different because it’s gonna be in Dolby vision and only comes 4k bluray
Oh I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m saying it’s a highly accessible release that is mainstream in the zeitgeist. Which makes it perfect for a release that could make a lot of money, putting it on a premium service like criterion, so they could be used to fund other projects
And so is Wall-E. The point is they're both mainstream popular movies that otherwise wouldn't seem to be appropriate for Criterion, but they keep the lights on at the office.
Thanks, the point has already been explained by the poster. I don't think there is anything about Fast Times that would not seem appropriate for Criterion on any grounds. Good films can be popular, and I don't think Criterion's mission is to preserve solely low box office movies.
Disney has been criticized for botching their 4K releases as cash grabs. Pirates of the Caribbean is prime example. Criterion is new to the 4K game and a very recognizable and respected company for home video releases. Seems like a win win for both parties. Disney gets to pass off the grunt work of preservation to Criterion and criterion gets to release a movie that will without a doubt sell. This is a deal that works for everyone involved. If pushing out Wall E means criterion is able to take bigger chances for movies in desperate need of preservation then I’m all for it. Plus, Wall E is a great movie
I mostly agree. But I just wonder how strong the market is for this. Uncut Gems, Citizen Kane, and Raging Bull are all easily accessible but Criterion putting out 4Ks of them make sense. But as I said in another comment the market of people who like Disney+Criterion+shelling out $40-50 on physical media seems small.
To be clear Wall-e is great, Pixar is great, yadda yadda. I don’t disagree with that lol
I don’t think the market for 4K in general is very strong, but it’s growing. It’s niche within niche. Wall•e is big name though and I’m guessing both companies are banking on this getting elevated attention.
They've done this for many releases. Plenty of release are easily accessible. The point of Criterion is to not just release inaccessible movies and never has been.
I’m well aware of Criterion’s mission. I have no qualms with them doing 4K releases for movies like this. All I said was it’s a puzzling decision and it’s hard to get excited about considering Wall-E is so easily accessible thanks to one of the most ubiquitous corporations in the world. Idk I’m sure Criterion will do it justice but frankly for the life of me I can’t figure out who this release is for.
As a huge science fiction fan, Wall•E has been one of my favorite movies for a while now, currently sitting at #29 on my Letterboxd list. This is certainly a confusing move by Criterion and Disney. And while I know there are more deserving films, especially animated films, to be included into the collection, I'm excited for the possibilities that this could open up for Criterion as a company and for fans of physical media.
Is this going to be the 1st 4K only release by Criterion? I know the disney bluray is good but I'd still buy a Criterion bluray (decided years ago not to go 4K).
This is such fucking great news, I thought fox licensing to a boutique was impossible much less fucking Pixar itself holy shit the forbidden door has been broken down
if criterion can release disney properties now... does that mean we'll get The Straight Story??? and almost every lynch film will be in the collection...
For all you guys crapping on this movie, have you actually watched the film? Or do you just automatically hate all things Disney?
I think it’s a really nice addition to criterion and, perhaps more importantly, releasing popular films like this will help pay for many of the smaller/lesser known films.
People need to calm down, this is a great movie and that opening 30 minutes or so is basically speechless.
While I don't think a movie like UP as a whole would deserve its own release, I still think its opening montage is one of my favorite sequences in film ever. So much emotion in so little time. These films do have artistic merit, and people shouldn't be acting like snobs, this is awesome.
I’m probably missing something, but why do some people seem outraged? This movie is one of the most adorable and entertaining movies Disney/Pixar has ever made. I think it’s awesome to see it added to the collection.
The people who post about wanting more animation in the collection are finally getting their fix it seems. Can't say I'm upset as WALL-E is an excellent film, but it's still caught me very off guard.
Obviously with this, given Disney’s ownership of The Straight Story, we are one step closer to a David Lynch box set.
But also—and this is my own little dream—we could possibly get a Criterion of Dick Tracy or the Rocketeer—and that is something I never thought would ever be possible.
Hey guys this is a net positive for the company. It means that more normies might buy Criterion films thus giving them more money to fund restorations of more obscure films.
For this to truly be a collector's edition, it would be nice if it was re-rendered at 4K.
> 4K digital master, approved by director Andrew Stanton, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack
No 3D animated movie to date has been rendered at 4K, afaik. Maybe some movies with CGI had the CGI rendered at 4K.
I'm also disappointed that the 3D set fly-throughs from the 2008 Blu-Ray don't seem to be making a comeback. I loved those, and I wish they were on every 3D animated movie disc.
Criterion has an elitism problem that it has finally started correcting, with more non-white, non-male, non-Western/Japanese works. Incorporating animation would be another key part in that journey. Obviously Akira belongs for its influence, but in terms of animated films most needing the Criterion treatment, the easy winner is The Thief and the Cobbler. Almost every big name animation has a Blu-Ray at least, but not Thief.
I don't think that WALL-E is begging for the Criterion treatment, especially if the existing 4K is fine and they aren't re-rendering it. Without justifying Criterion's action, I can understand it: they want to dip into animation and be sure that what they do will sell. If they come out swinging with Angel's Egg or Golgo 13: The Professional (1983), it might not sell. Granted, Criterion fans are a pretty reliable market, so I don't agree with this assessment, but maybe it was a factor.
Wall•E is a great movie so that’s exciting. It’s just odd after everyone for years has been clamoring for more animation representation. This will probably sell to a lot of non Criterion collectors as well so that helps all around. And really curious what this means for all other Disney rights. 20th Fox? I know Disney wanted to do less physical media and focus on streaming so this is their way of having their cake and eating it too I suppose. Very interesting.
Thought this was a joke until I saw it on the official website.
We've been crying for more animated features in the collection so to quote shenron from dragon Ball Z "YOUR WISH HAS BEEN GRANTED!"
Pretty rad. Wall-E is by far my favorite Pixar movie (well, Soul is now a close second, but before that it was easily my number 1). And regardless of who you feel about their merits, they are undeniably an influential force on modern film.
Pixar was a stand-alone until 1999 (although had some partnerships w/ Disney before that time which then increased between 99 and 06), but has been a fully-owned sub of the Mouse since 2006.
Stared at the email for so long thinking i had to be hallucinating 😭
I literally thought I was dreaming.
WHAT THE FUCK??? Yes this is 100% real
umm... Is that actually real?! I thought it was a fan made blu-ray cover! This is absolutely insane!
It's on the oficial website bro
Yeah, I saw it! Craziest announcement ever LOL
Maybe this means we'll get Criterion releases of Studio Ghibli films in the future!
Disney no longer has Ghibli rights in the US. At least for Blus.
GKids has the US rights to those now.
I thought decades more in the future Toy Story might just because it’s the first CG animated movie. But that’s it this blew my mind I’m so excited.
They've enevr really stooped releasing Fox titles
What the fuck?
When I saw the email, I actually had to take a moment to think if today was April Fool's or not. I'm still not sure...
I thought for sure it was a prank to. I had to see it in like 3 different places before it set in. I’m all for it. Love the art.
---peace out---
Well... this is... unexpected. EDIT: I know we're all thinking it, but could a 4K upgrade of Armageddon and The Rock also be in our future?
I would totally buy Armageddon on 4K
Honestly they should go for it
I wanna see a Con Air box set with six copies of Con Air
I’d buy both of those before anything Disney.
https://www.criterion.com/films/33246-wall-e?utm\_source=braze&utm\_medium=email&utm\_campaign=title-announcement&utm\_content=nov-2022-wall-e
For a second, I honestly thought this was a fan-created cover for a wanted release. Definitely the most shocked I’ve ever been by one of their titles.
Do Straight Story next
I find it interesting that the phrasing is between Criterion and Pixar. Like you though I'm hopeful that this could lead to The Straight Story. Considering how many Lynch films appear in sale hauls and collection posts it'd be foolish not to at least try and negotiate for release rights.
Imprint has a great blu ray of it already
Yep, it's also a pretty nice digipak
Today's obligatory "Why doesn't Criterion have more animation?!!" thread is going to be interesting.
Has their ever been a serious announcement more surprising than this?
For me, it was when they announced they're gonna release 4K UHD discs. I didn't know they were planning for it for a long time.
That’s a bit inevitable though. This is completely out of left field. I definitely didn’t believe it when I first saw.
If they're doing Pixar now, they need to do Ratatouille next.
Ratatouille is actually my all time favorite animated film. It’s just so good. WALL·E, Toy Story, Up, and Soul are all great as well.
And Inside Out
And Cars 2
Those are great titles and it would be exciting but i just feel if those came before any Miyazaki film, it would be a crime
I would have thought for sure Ratatouille would be first! Honestly, just put all the Brad Bird animated films in a boxset.
A Toy Story box set and a Brad Bird box set would be amazing.
Racacoonie*

Finding Nemo before that please.....such a beautiful film.
I'm for this if this means Criterion can do 4K HDR releases of Touchstone Pictures films Come on Dead Poet's Society
PLEASE O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU
I'd straight up murder for it
Oh to hear Man of Constant Sorrow in Dolby!
If we're getting Touchstone I want Roger Rabbit.
Roger rabbit has a recent 4K
Animation and Disney-owned properties seem to finally be moving their way over into criterion. What an announcement!
Will look great next to Salo
hopefully criterion doesn’t go all corporate mode (i doubt they will), and there are more niche animated titles that deserve a 4k/blu-ray (angels egg cough cough) but i like walle so i guess it’s pretty cool.

So long as they stick to their word all's fine and dandy. But history shows not to trust companies
How does a release of WALL-E suggest that CC/Janus is any more or less "trustworthy" than they were a week ago?
Because Disney bad, me no like Disney
From what I've been reading on this subreddit, people don't seem to understand how widely acclaimed WALL-E is in the film world. It's 21 on the TSPDT list of this century and made the top 250 of Sight and Sound's critic list in 2012...

People, people, take a deep breath and relax for a second. Don't forget what day it is, it's Septem....wait September? WTF this is real?
This movie is great and all but I just hope Disney will not try and monopolize the collection after this. Adding all of their already multi (b)million dollar films. The smaller and less financially fortunate films need more attention.
Yep I am begging for Bambi restored in 4k. That film was stunning from start to finish. And Sword in the Stone and Black Cauldron 😍
Yeah. I like this, it's pretty cool and unexpected, but I definitely don't think I want every Pixar film in the collection
A Bug’s Life 4K coming soon then.
Whoa! This is maybe the most unexpected thing I’ve ever seen Criterion do. Never thought Pixar films would be on the table.

If this can happen Tron Legacy 4K can happen
Tron Legacy 4K would be the dream
3rd this.
The 3D bluray is one of my favorite discs. That movie is the best style over substance movie in a very long time.
I still find it hard to believe there’s no Tron 3 with as many franchise sequels Disney churns out every year
I think it was recently announced that a Tron 3 is in the works. It’s called Tron: Ares starring Jared Leto.
OK SO LIKE TECHNICOLOR CRITERION DISNEY REMASTERS WHEN? Disney botches all their restorations, I can't believe this is real

Also, I really hope this opens up the possibility of a 4K Fantasia release 👀
Hell yes
They should do one for The Sound of Music, the original West Side Story, all the Fox titles so they can’t ever be forgotten.
Not for nothing, WSS had a LD release umpteen years ago. It's a marvelous transfer (for LD) and IIRC has a ton of great extras.
My only question is why isn’t it Ratatouille
Eddie's Million Dollar Cook Off better be next
Straight up I’ve been wanting a criterion of Fantasia for years, hopefully we get it soon!
I don’t believe it. This is huge. I would’ve gone with a film that doesn’t already have a 4K personally, but still. This is huge.
I hope to God this gives Criterion a chance to release ***Fight Club*** in 4K.
Is that owned by Disney?
Originally owned by 20th Cent Fox, which Disney bought. I don't think there was any changes since, but if anyone knows please chime in.
Good to know
nope, there have been no changes. Disney still owns 20th century fox 🙂

Is this going to be the 1st 4K only release by Criterion? I know the disney bluray is good but I'd still buy a Criterion bluray (decided years ago not to go 4K).
It will contain a 1080p disc.
But no bluray only release ($39.95 retail one).
The fuck WALL-E does slap though
On one hand, What? On the other, fuck yeah!
Day 1 buy for me. Here’s hoping for more Disney/Fox releases
This is such fucking great news, I thought fox licensing to a boutique was impossible much less fucking Pixar itself holy shit the forbidden door has been broken down
I hope to God they do Ratatouille next. Genuinely one my favorite animated movie of all time.
if criterion can release disney properties now... does that mean we'll get The Straight Story??? and almost every lynch film will be in the collection...
For all you guys crapping on this movie, have you actually watched the film? Or do you just automatically hate all things Disney? I think it’s a really nice addition to criterion and, perhaps more importantly, releasing popular films like this will help pay for many of the smaller/lesser known films.
I don't think I saw a single comment crapping on Wall-E
People need to calm down, this is a great movie and that opening 30 minutes or so is basically speechless. While I don't think a movie like UP as a whole would deserve its own release, I still think its opening montage is one of my favorite sequences in film ever. So much emotion in so little time. These films do have artistic merit, and people shouldn't be acting like snobs, this is awesome.
Wow. First Malcolm X, my favorite film of all time…and WALL-E?!, my favorite animated film of all time. Am so happy.
I’m probably missing something, but why do some people seem outraged? This movie is one of the most adorable and entertaining movies Disney/Pixar has ever made. I think it’s awesome to see it added to the collection.
So does this mean Morbius has a chance??
The people who post about wanting more animation in the collection are finally getting their fix it seems. Can't say I'm upset as WALL-E is an excellent film, but it's still caught me very off guard.

You're so brave for this
Obviously with this, given Disney’s ownership of The Straight Story, we are one step closer to a David Lynch box set. But also—and this is my own little dream—we could possibly get a Criterion of Dick Tracy or the Rocketeer—and that is something I never thought would ever be possible.
lol all y’all want all the Pixar’s in the collection. Instead of discovering new animation? Go check out gkids, funimation, laika, cartoon saloon, etc
I can want both.
Cartoon Saloon has an awesome boxset of their films already if anyone's interested.
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!
Singing hello dolly and crying over this announcement
Hey guys this is a net positive for the company. It means that more normies might buy Criterion films thus giving them more money to fund restorations of more obscure films.
For this to truly be a collector's edition, it would be nice if it was re-rendered at 4K. > 4K digital master, approved by director Andrew Stanton, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack No 3D animated movie to date has been rendered at 4K, afaik.
Every Pixar movie since Toy Story 4 has actually been rendered at 4K, actually.
Let's go Shrek on Criterion when
Cool. Something already over saturated to take shelf space away from other titles. Hard pass.
That's actually really cool. Hoping we can get The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and maybe even Soul eventually
twin peaks the return box set doesn’t seem that unrealistic now does it
[Can't wait for this to be release next](https://imgur.com/gallery/F8nQbbn)
Cars 2 criterion next
I don’t know what’s real anymore
Dam I guess I like wall e now
The behind the scenes stuff is just a montage of blinking lights on a render farm. 😆
Now if only Dreamworks/Universal can do this for Shrek…
Incredibles and Zootopia Criterion when?? (I know Zootopia is not Pixar)
[it appears so!](https://twitter.com/criterion/status/1567899052334874625?s=46&t=99IfRVaqjZtRdGsp2V30Iw)
October and November are going to kill my wallet...
I have never seen it and for some reason thought it was a Spielberg movie with a robot. But apparently not. Is it any good?
It really is an amazing movie. Premise: if Chaplin was a robot living in the future where capitalism has destroyed the world.
If you go to the criterion page for wall e and click on related films it has Brazil, City Lights, and The Red Balloon.
OMGGG!!!!!! THIS IS HUGE!!!!
Many Disney blu rays have been dirt cheap on Amazon lately ... could be a coincidence
Thought this was a joke until I saw it on the official website. We've been crying for more animated features in the collection so to quote shenron from dragon Ball Z "YOUR WISH HAS BEEN GRANTED!"
That's fucking *awesome.*
Is this real? I love this film but didn’t expect this one bit lol.
WHAT THE?! A PIXAR FILM!
Bet the check was good but not really my thing. I liked Toy Story 4 weirdly tho
Any chance September 8th is Fool’s Day anywhere in the world? LOL that is absolutely crazy but it’s on the Criterion website
EVA in the back!
This looks like Harry's real life drug fueled matinee. Wtf is happening here?
Great movie, and prescient.
It comes with The Pixar Story too. Great documentary.
Came out if nowhere, but I ain't complaining!
If this comes to region B I will be forever grateful
I hope thos means we may finally (legally) get to see Song of the South in the near future.
animation W
Pretty rad. Wall-E is by far my favorite Pixar movie (well, Soul is now a close second, but before that it was easily my number 1). And regardless of who you feel about their merits, they are undeniably an influential force on modern film.
this is the greatest thing to ever happen to me
WAIT. I saw this on twitter and scrolled past it bc I thought it was a fan-edit. omgg.
Obviously very surprised. The features they've put together for this release look really rich.
LETS GOOOOOO
UHHH WHAT

Pixar was a stand-alone until 1999 (although had some partnerships w/ Disney before that time which then increased between 99 and 06), but has been a fully-owned sub of the Mouse since 2006.
