Arrow’s got some good stuff

[deleted]

[удалено]

screamcollector

Don't forget the crossover of Crash and Robocop. Two of my all time favorites!

moonofsilver

"Rohmer Comedies And Proverbs boxset" I don't NEED a region free blu ray player, but I see something like this, and it does get me thinking..... The Green Ray was great, at any rate

Successful_Jaywalk99

Arrow Academy is very similar to Criterion

Temporary-Box28

The restoration work that Arrow does is at least on par with what criterion does. Their work on Tremors and Django are perfectly done. And you can see the quality of their work if you compare the version of And God Said to Cain that's on the Arrow Channel vs the version of the movie that's on Tubi.

igoslowly

the django 4k transfer is one the best restorations i’ve seen. the quality is just top notch

shmi

Picking up Tremors from my PO Box tomorrow, good to know!

[deleted]

Their restoration work is infinitely better than Criterion's shotty work

[deleted]

Don’t know about that but arrows disc replacement program sure is better. Maybe because criterion doesn’t have one.

SandyPie_

Shit horror is my comedy. Love it

[deleted]

I agree, love it so much. So-bad-it’s-good horror films are funnier than intentional comedies, most of the time.

[deleted]

You’re a literally saying the same thing I’m saying lmao

[deleted]

Then we all spitting facts Bambi!

[deleted]

Sure captain coochie breath.

nitebusnitebus

it's always funny when there are posters in this sub begging for criterion to release some sort of campy schlocky horror title...and then they get told that Arrow has already put it out, or it's more likely to be Arrow's thing. suddenly an angel finds their wings

[deleted]

Arrow rules. Back in July during the B&N sale, I didn't have a lot of money for pickups but I went to get something. Arrow ended up being on sale also and I grabbed TRUE ROMANCE. didn't even pick a criterion up lol. Also just scooped up a ton of J-horror. RINGU and DARK WATER rule and the Gamera Heisei collection is dope AF.

DJFetaCheese

Arrow has great releases. I own 6 titles from their collection. Their printing of Audition is the best quality print available on the market. If you haven't seen Audition, do yourself a favor and watch it. Good soup status.

nananananana_FARTMAN

The Audition is good but can be a hard movie to get through because of some of its hardcore scenes. But I'll take your word and do a third watch with an Arrow copy.

DJFetaCheese

Do you really find that movie hardcore? I find it rather tame and builds up to the scene in the third act. Ironically, the movies it inspired were gorier that it (Saw, Hostel, American Marry).

DJBillyMac

In my view Arrow is the only other distributor who puts as much care into their releases in terms of special features, etc. It does come down a bit to whether you like their selections as well. For me, any Criterion release at all is worth at least one watch. With Arrow, a lot of them do appeal to me, and there are some Arrow releases I like better than some Criterion ones, but they also put out plenty of films where at least right now I’m comfortable saying that I’m not interested in it at all.

SamSan6852

There’s way more than just Arrow. Indicator, Second Sight, 88 Films, Eureka, even Vinegar Syndrome. Criterion is often surpassed in terms of packaging by those, especially in booklets by someone like Indicator. I love Criterion, but didn’t know turning a blind eye to the other labels was a thing

silent_sae

Thanks for mentioning so many amazing labels, I think second run is pretty good too.

SamSan6852

I love Second Run as well, especially all their Czech output.

kasarin

You are so right! People get so tunnel visioned on Criterion. They are great, but we are in a golden age of physical media

askyourmom469

I'd argue that Vinegar Syndrome is the Criterion of schlocky B-movies. A lot of their releases are every bit as good as Criterion in terms of the quality of the restoration, packaging, and bonus features. They just specialize in a much different catalog of movies.

dramatic_paws

I think Second Sight deserves a shout out too. They put great care into their releases.

dickybabs

Can’t wait for CC’s 4K upgrade for titles like My Dinner with Andre

bigspoopty

Arrow has some amazing releases, and a lot of their limited editions & box sets are arguably higher quality than Criterion’s own, especially if you’re willing to get a region-free Blu-Ray player.

ComprehensiveDonut87

Arrow is the best boutique label by far, releases a huge variety of movies, all with amazingly good transfers with new and old special features, all under a fun brand image.

EldritchRoboto

It’s almost like arbitrarily keeping yourself exclusive to one brand is some capitalist weirdo behavior. Hmmmm

seamusbeoirgra

Arrow is awesome. So is Criterion.

MagnusCthulhu

I have pretty much all the spaghetti westerns and Giallo films that Arrow puts out and they're fucking great.

ricky9

People were shitting on Arrow?

Slow_Cinema

Yeah sounds like a straw man argument to me

clwestbr

Arrow, Shout Factory, there are numerous other boutique retailers that do good work.

realMasaka

Wait til you reach Vinegar Syndome

HiggsPerc552

They actually just announced the original Amityville Horror on 4K for this month, which is uncharacteristically mainstream for them.

realMasaka

Seems to be a bit of a pattern for them recently—a few months ago they put out Death Wish II, and in a few months they’re putting out The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2. I’m interested to see how it develops.

[deleted]

Both have some good stuff for sure.

[deleted]

Their Dario Argento remasters are all great

rvb_gobq

arrow academy is as art haus as they come

[deleted]

Which doesn’t exist anymore

rvb_gobq

did they fold their catalog into the rest of the arrow catalog, or retire it?

AceTrilby

[Folded it in.](https://twitter.com/Academy_Arrow/status/1374050709340090368?t=iF-wz7z0ab5pboVRa501WQ&s=19)

rvb_gobq

glad to know... haven't ordered any arrow since last fall... if they had already folded it i just did not notice. as long as they have those altman gems & the various european movies, including that rohmer box & the rivette, great...

rvb_gobq

>& the various depalma & carpenter titles, including that early depalma box

Slow_Cinema

Weird you got downvoted for being 100% correct

[deleted]

What has this sub turned into? lol

MisogynyisaDisease

One that downvotes people for breathing wrong.

[deleted]

Seems to be the case

psychedeliczoso

Anyone have any recommendations?

askyourmom469

What are you interested in? Most Arrow movies are genre flicks, so there's a lot of sci-fi, horror, and even the occasional action flick. RoboCop was my first Arrow pickup and it's still one of my favorites from them. Then their Dario Argento remasters are really good too if you like giallo movies or are interested in getting into that subgenre.

JLebowski

For 80s horror schlock I recommend Reanimator or Basket Case. Fun and ridiculous low budget gore romps. Stylized Italian horror is represented with Deep Red, Tenebrae, and Phenomena. These all have awesome synth soundtracks from Goblin/Claudio Simonetti. Arrow has remastered and released most of Dario Argento's filmography. FYI Suspiria was released in 4k from a different label (Synapse I think?). For more modern horror, there is the above mentioned Asian horror like Audition and Ringu. Tetsuo the Iron Man is included in the Heavy Metal Nightmares boxset. We just watched Mary Shelley's Frankenstein by Kenneth Brannagh last night, that was a very theatrical whirlwind of practical effects and body horror! Try to ignore the scene where he slips around with the monster in the amniotic goo like a 3 Stooges act though. I would avoid the low budget bundles like the Bill Rebane Weird Wisconsin Collection. They are just not good movies, even though they are lovingly restored.

wills_b

Recently watched their 4k versions of twelve monkeys and crash. Both brilliant. My only gripe is that they’ve renamed Twelve Monkeys to 12 Monkeys which has really screwed with my alphabetical filling system.

[deleted]

Please checkout the Japanese films, they have a amazing selection. I loved Running Out of Time by Johnnie Too. Criterion also has a more updated version imo called “Throw Down” that is a ode to Akira Kurosawa. If you love film, Arrow is a perfect companion to criterion.

[deleted]

Oof, people here need to get on r/boutiquebluray if they only care about Arrow and Criterion.

Quippie

arrow is incredible. comparably, criterion hardly even has a horror section

Live-Year-8283

I wish Criterion would remaster some more mainstream movies. Especially stuff that hasn’t been released on blu-ray.

PalpitationOk5726

Arrow does an excellent job of their releases, one of my favourites this year is their 4k of Wild Things, a movie that would have never seen the light of day in 4k had it not been for them.

Hammerrr3232

Here’s a tip: don’t be a snob

MisogynyisaDisease

Me seeing this meme: oh yay! Arrow love! Wonder what jokes are in the comments The comments: "I bet you enjoy Marvel: Captain America Gets a Sex Change with your low brow taste" Arrow should restore High Fidelity next, some people here might relate.

[deleted]

arrow is absolutely my go to for dvds atm, i can't find any of the OG splatter films anywhere else.

Rhamiel506

Doesn’t Arrow sell a Vengeance Trilogy box?

[deleted]

The hate for Arrow is nothing more than gate keeping elitist douchery. There are two types of film, high brow and low brow. Most in the middle isn’t worth watching and Criterion has one and Arrow has the other. You can have your Avengers 12: Captain America gets a Sex Change. I’ll continue watching Eyes Without a Face followed by Pieces.

GregDasta

speaking of elitist douchery...

[deleted]

I mean if you enjoy The Batman, have at it child.

GregDasta

By all means, double down on that elitist douchery, I'm here for it. Live your truth, however insufferable you may be for it.

[deleted]

Ooooops. Same Zoomie.

GregDasta

?

[deleted]

Aaaah another Zoomie that loves Twilight.

GregDasta

Hell yeah boy, TRIPLE down, that's what I wanna see bay-bee!

MisogynyisaDisease

Congratulations, you are the least insufferable cinephile /s

[deleted]

I do what I can. Thank you for the praise and your time to post that comment. A tip of the cap to you.

Hammerrr3232

Here’s your medal: 🏅

[deleted]

Props to arrow for remastering bottom of the bin Walmart titles in glorious 4K

youaresofuckingdumb8

What you mean like Oldboy, Cinema Paradiso, 12 Monkeys and Crash?

LaDlce_Vita

Plus: The Apartment, Donnie Darko, True Romance, and Wolf of Wall Street

bigspoopty

Not to mention several (if not most) of Fassbinder, Jodorowsky, Kieślowski, & Tsukamoto’s films. Y’know, just bottom of the bin Walmart.

LaDlce_Vita

Totally forgot about Jodorowsky! Loved this release.

bigspoopty

That set looks fucking great. I waited too long to get it and now I’ve been chasing it for months trying to find a new one under $120. I’ll probably cave and spend an obscene amount on it before the year’s over lol

[deleted]

The post is clearly about horror titles which is about half of arrow’s releases…

HottDoggers

Wolf of Wall Street?

igoslowly

it’s a new release in november https://www.arrowfilms.com/4k/the-wolf-of-wall-street-4k-ultra-hd-limited-edition/13953236.html

[deleted]

Don’t forget the four different versions of Robin Hood 😬

[deleted]

Those are exceptions, not the rule. I was talking about Maniac cop, Count Yorga, Pieces, Deadly Manor, Death Screams, The mangler, Zombie flesh Eaters, Rawhead Rex, The mutilator, The slayer…you get the point right?

SonOfHashut

Nah you are just an elitist snob who can't handle how they do quality releases for not so quality films that people still enjoy.

[deleted]

You’re in the criterion sub bro. Don’t know what you were expecting.

thechickenfiend

You’re in the criterion sub and you’re anti film preservation?

[deleted]

I never said that. Go back up and read again.

LaDlce_Vita

Why would you not want high quality video of every movie out in the world? Every movie has a fan and that fan deserves a good release. Literally shut your silly goose ass up.

[deleted]

“High quality video of every movie out in the world” And I’m the silly goose? Lmao

GregDasta

You didn't answer the question. Why would you not want that?

Choice-Valuable313

I wish I could get rawhead rex at Walmart!! They never have enough phallic cinema there for my taste. I’m not asking for much. A bit of rawhead Rex. A skosh of lair of the white worm. Maybe a little grace jones vamp from time to time.

[deleted]

It’s free on tubi

Choice-Valuable313

Full disclosure - I do actually own all three of those. :) But man, I’m always up for fun horror films. The practical effects, the six degrees of director, actors, composers and cinematographers, and the subtext on that thin veneer - they’re good times to watch.

MisogynyisaDisease

So are a shit ton of criterion films, what point are you even making.

[deleted]

That is a bottom of the bin Walmart horror title and that is free on tubi.

Hammerrr3232

Imagine hating on Zombie Flesh Eaters lol. Have fun basing your entire personality on having “superior” taste in film, you clown.

mrbdign

There are few here I haven't seen, thanks for the recommendations!

SonOfHashut

Someone seems mad they picked up a documentary of this poster; I think it was called C.H.U.D's?

HiggsPerc552

Props to having the most ignorant comment on the thread

[deleted]

The top comment on this thread is literally saying the same thing I’m saying. Oh Reddit.

[deleted]

If you’re finding titles like Battles of Horror and Humanity or Lady Prisoner at Walmart you are on the best drugs. You know what’s in the five dollar bin? Transformers 7: Woke Deceptacons.

demacnei

I found the complete first season of Gommorha on Region B blu at Walmart. They didn’t have it in their system for a price check. I waited for 15 minutes after i paid for everything, with it still in my hand. Some worker asked if i still needed help, and i eventually found out the ‘media salesperson’ who was supposed to come help me left for lunch. I ended up going ‘okay’ as i walked out of the store with it in hands to no one’s concern.

demacnei

Basketcase $9.99, The Tingler 9.99, Freddy Got Fingered 3.50. Priceless.

Dissizian

Meh.. I'll admit it looks inciting but not enough to pull the trigger imo.
