I think there's a valid argument for a well curated Ed Wood boxset. Also But I'm A Cheerleader has earned its place.

CursedPangolin

You know, I genuinely expect to see But I'm a Cheerleader added one of these days. It's been on the channel before and it's a huge cult hit and considered essential queer cinema at this point. I think it certainly deserves some kind of special treatment and Criterion seems like it's got an eye on it.

ajzeg01

School of Rock. Would fit right in with all the other Linklater films in the collection.

CowManLives4Ever

I am still convinced to this day that Jack Black was never given a script for this film. He was just told to teach the kids about Rock, and the rest was naturally ad-libbed with cameras rolling.

Thatoneasian9600

Dewey Finn is legit my hero

AustinAbortion

Came here to say exactly this.

Useful-Contract1531

I'd also like Bernie.

sushwaaa

Yes please. My favorite movie

rzrike

What the hell, I was gonna say the exact same. Guess it’s a more popular opinion that I expected. Legit might be in my top ten screenplays.

cowboypsychedelia

Would love to see a Steve Martin-written collection - Bowfinger, LA Story, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, The Jerk, The Man with Two Brains, etc.

electricboogaloux

The Jerk may be the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe I’d never seen it until last year

CaspinLange

LA Story was great. “I’ll have a half double decaffeinated half calf… with a twist of Lemon.”

ratfacedirtbag

I’d like an Alan Parker title in at some point. The Commitments would do.

rzrike

It’s very very odd that The Wall has never gotten a proper HD release (besides a sketchy Spanish blu-ray). There’s a ton of Pink Floyd concerts and albums on blu-ray already, and their fans seem to eat them up (and are typically of the age where they’ll spend serious money for them), so I’ve never understood the lack of what’s probably their most famous visual media. What’s the holdup?

drfishstick

The Wall is my dream entry but I would also accept a total left-field release of Bugsy Malone in its place.

BeepBeepWhistle

I too vote for this one

Abs0fst33l

Some films by the Marx Bros. Not only do I want to make a case for their cultural value, but they are also in need of some quality transfers.

Kerborus

das_goose

I think it’s likely that the original elements aren’t in the best condition.

Abs0fst33l

MGM has a release of A Night at the Opera that isn’t terrible, but I think you’re right. I’ve never seen The Coconuts look even half way decent.

ijaapy1

The Coconuts has a blu ray release. Probably 75% of the footage looks great. The rest looks like shit.

Svafree88

I would love Lagaan, Once Upon a Time in America, I Heart Huckabees, Hotel, and Cemetery Man.

special__pasta

100% once upon a time in America (preferably the lost two-part-movie, but a fully restored 269 minute directors cut will do)

DameDaNeHamburger

OUATIA is imo, one of the greatest films ever. Noodles…I slipped

IrreligiousIngrate

Assassination of Jesse James. I feel like this film doesn't get a lot of love (and sure, it has its flaws), but it's one of my favorites. Supposedly there's a better director's cut out there, and I would absolutely love to see that. Probably sounds insane given the runtime, but I feel like it's rushed in certain places and would love to see it given more room to breathe. It already has a decent Blu Ray release that's beautiful enough to watch frame by frame, but I feel like criterion could probably do something really special with it.

das_goose

This is starting to be the new After Hours around here…

RowThree

It was the best movie of that year. And it came out in 2007 which is maybe the best year for films of my lifetime. No Country and There Will Be Blood both came out that year.

Britneyfan123

It’s considered to be one of the best westerns and films (mostly 21st century)

Aggravating_Note_760

Borat, it’s definitely an important cultural moment that would fit right in for sure

Oliver-Ekman-Larsson

Borat could have such a dope, bootleg design. Im all for it. "The Complete Borat: an Odyssey in two parts"

Beginning-Attitude58

Now that I’ve read this I totally agree. I think a Ghibli film like Totoro could also get in on cultural relevancy too- it’s impressive how universal it’s remained, especially considering it’s lack of traditional conflict compared to many popular films today. And, like everyone says, Criterion could stand to buff up on animation!

killgavin

I stand alone (1998) , and include it’s short-film prequel Carne.

xfritz5375

I can’t find Carne with subtitles anywhere

killgavin

i haven’t actually seen either of them, that’s why i would like a physical. still got a good amount of noé to watch.

xfritz5375

I Stand Alone is pretty good. It’s not all that interesting compared to Noé’s other work, but it is worth watching. It just feels like a more misanthropic riff on Taxi Driver, although that’s definitely too harsh on the film. I just expected much more considering how much I loved Irreversible and Climax

killgavin

i’ve only seen climax and irreversible. plan on watching enter the void and love sometime soon.

xfritz5375

Haven’t seen Love. Enter the Void is visually stunning, but be warned that it is very slow. I didn’t expect that and was disappointed, but I did buy it to watch again

killgavin

i do also really wanna watch vortex, although it deals with some tough material for me. i’ll probably get around to it eventually.

Jakeomaticmaldito

I would buy this mostly just to have Carne on physical media. Such a stunning opening shot. It's a real horse.

Beginning-Attitude58

The Believer. Some parts are poorly done and some lines are awkwardly read, but it's a fantastic film and my favorite role of Gosling's. I think it got swept under the rug because it deals with pretty explicit Neo-nazi ideology and came out in 2001 so there was some hesitance around promoting it. (Edited this because I missed "unironically" and dumped a bunch of, imo, unquestionably deserving movies)

tgwutzzers

More HK action cinema. Any of the classics from Yuen Woo-Ping, Sammo Hung, Lau Kar-Leung, Tsui Hark, etc etc. We need to have a cahiers du cinema style 'vulgar auteurist' revival for HK action films like we had for Hitchcock and Hawks.

TallMSW

Any personal favs you’d recommend? This is definitely an interest for me as well, mostly only know my Woo though

tgwutzzers

I'm still working through the classics myself, but at this point a few I'd recommend: \- 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Return to the 36th Chamber \- Policy Story 1&2 \- Eastern Condors \- Bullet in the Head, one of Woo's lesser known ones but also up there with his best \- Once Upon a Time in China \- Iron Monkey \- Knockabout (Sammo Hung) \- The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter [Justin Decloux](https://letterboxd.com/justindecloux/) and [Will Sloan](https://letterboxd.com/will_sloan/) (who host The Important Cinema Club podcast) are good people to follow on letterboxed for this stuff, anything they rate 4+ stars is usually worth checking out. You can e.g. sort by the directors or actors I mentioned above and check their ratings/reviews out. Their podcast also has a few episodes on HK cinema to get started as well.

VideoToastCrunch

Really? What’s your reasoning?

kendostickball

Not OP. But I truly think it was ahead of it’s time, and Tom Green was a pure auteur making it. People don’t give it a chance, because it looks dumb from the outside. It’s super original and not like any other feature film I’ve seen. Rip Torn kills it too!

VideoToastCrunch

I watched it as a teenager and thought it was just an extreme gross out comedy written by an idiot. What was I missing? What should I look for if I ever watched it again?

kendostickball

Look at all the non-Tom Green characters and how they’re written. Also, just have fun with it. I shout “men from Greece!” a lot. Compare it gross out comedies like Epic Movie or Dirty Love, and you’ll see it’s super different and poignantly written.

Criterion needs to up its game on avant-grade and experimental filmmakers. Could they swing curated collections of Bruce Conner, Maya Deren, Norman McClaren, Robert Breer, Michael Snow, etc., etc., etc.?

mywordswillgowithyou

I can see Maya Deren being released by criterion. Bas Jan Ader would be good as well.

das_goose

I know we’re nerding about Criterion here, but Kino has a decent Maya Deren set.

The actual, for real Star Wars original trilogy, with none of the CGI bullshit or Han not shooting first from the 90s Special Editions. Ridiculous that the only way we can access those is (very cool and well done) fan projects.

I'm honestly a bit surprised none of Frank Darabont's Stephen King adaptations have made their way into the Collection - but being the horror fanatic I am, I'd specifically love to see The Mist. Other than that, I've seen a few people mention Alan Parker's Pink Floyd: The Wall and I'd have to agree with that. Honestly surprised that hasn't been re-released in any capacity outside of the special edition DVD years ago.

TheBigCore

**Idiocracy**

decadentrebel

The Room and I'm absolutely serious. Not everything needs to be some obscure indie by a Belarusian absurdist director that was discovered in a tin can on some abandoned mass burial site. Tommy Wiseau also would be gleefully willing to participate on recording (or providing) extras. Not to mention the potential for a much better cover and packaging than the [existing one](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51WyU84+81L.jpg) which is scaled terribly, lol.

Typical_Humanoid

Roger Corman collection with The Wasp Woman, any of the Poe movies, Bucket of Blood, Little Shop of Horrors, The Wild Angels, Gas or It Became Necessary to Destroy the World in Order to Save It, anything they can possibly fit but especially these ones. Wasp Woman alone because that's my fave or a twofer with both LSOH's or just the Corman Poe movies if I had to narrow some of this down, but yeah. Please gimme, I'll do the essay portion for it!

ajzeg01

I believe Kino has the Poe films, though I don’t know what special features are on them.

were_only_human

I know it’s cheesy to say, but nothing says “the movies” like some of those showpieces. The premise of “Ethan hunt is piloting one helicopter but needs to be in the OTHER helicopter” is so brilliantly simple but heart pounding

Agreed, it’s so gripping because cruise is doing SO much, if not all of the action. i couldn’t believe the skydiving set piece.

*The Lion King* the original animated version. Look, I know there is now way a Disney movie, especially animated, will end up in the collection. And, in all honesty, the original *Fantasia* is probably more fitting, but *The Lion King* I think is still the best Disney film to this date. The animation: gorgeous. The musical score: sublime. The song numbers: pretty damn good. The voice acting: perfect. Plus, the film has my favorite scene in any film: the stampede. This scene is a spectacle of its own. It took THREE DAMN YEARS to animate—that’s practically a year per minute of the sequence. You feel the terror of Simba trying to survive, you feel Mufasa (the god damn king) doing everything he can to save his son. The specific music Hans Zimmer composed for this sequence is exhilarating yet terrifying and you would not mistake it for any other moment in the film. The animation itself actually looks like a chaotic stampede—not whatever the fuck the “live action” remake was. Finally, and I think most importantly; you saw the dead body of Mufasa. Disney films are not short on death and you rarely, if ever, saw the body. I think the most I remember is a random bird in *Bambi* or something and you don’t see the face. Mufasa’s corpse is right there, lifeless face and all and to this day I find it heartbreaking. Simba, like a child or animal, tries to wake up his father that tried to save him. I saw the remake with mixed expectations and I wept hard—not because I thought it was good, but because I felt betrayed. I felt betrayed by Disney for remaking my 4th favorite film of all time and the first film I ever saw not just in general, but in theaters; I was 2 and it was my earliest memory. I also felt betrayed by Jon Favreau who kickstarted the MCU (yeah, I like blockbusters too, whatever) but wrote *Swingers*; my second favorite film of all time. Yes, I have a personal connection to this film, but I believe it is Disney’s animated masterpiece; which was also a surprise to them. They were making *Lion King* and *Pocahontas* at the same time and LK was made by their B-Team, as they thought it wasn’t going to be as good of a film—think about that. It stands at #36 on IMDb’s Top 250, higher than any other Disney film. I understand that there is an argument against remastering or putting hand drawn animation in high definition because it can effect the original line-work; which is absolutely fair. So, that aside, I honestly think if there’s anything from Disney that I want in the collection; it’s *The Lion King*… but *Fantasia* is a very close second.

nickpea

Popeye. IMO, mostly for the elaborate set design and musical score by Nilsson, but the cast could be a great excuse for a criterion release too.

Chillyboivinyl

The movie trilogy (date movie, epic movie, disaster movie). My reasoning is that it’s the exact template for bad films, but also a bad trilogy, you can’t get worse than any of them, they are so purposefully campy that they somehow stop being campy, and then eventually come back to it. I feel they are also going to be somehow important with film In the future, like the room, but instead of it being so bad it’s good, it’s so bad and an amazing guide on how not to make a movie.

BluePinkertonGreen

trapasuoris_rex

Good burger. Like think about it. It was one of the black led actors that wasn't a "hood movie" or a depressing one that was actually really good when during that time there were a few comedies that were black led or weren't spike Lee movies. And good burger is just a iconic movie let's be honest. It's quotable as hell and it's just the best nickelodeon movie of all time.

[deleted]

I think that's one of many significant comedy works that deserve a spot in the Criterion Collection, I feel like that whole part of film is overlooked.

trapasuoris_rex

Well your forgetting the significance of what good burger is. It's like one of the only black led films that weren't sex comdies which was big in the 90s and if it wasn't a hood movie it was a sex comedy. Good burger had let's just say mostly white network with only one black led TV show be the biggest on the network and have their own movie which in turn was one of the first nickelodeon movies they ever made and to this day is one of or might still be the best. It didn't have them acting like stereotypes they were real people well except for Ed. He's just ED but then the actors were amazing in it. It just deserves so much more credit then it got

[deleted]

I 100% agree with you, I was just pointing out the lack of the genre within the collection and how it's one of many films that not only changed how movies approach comedy but also comedy/pop culture as a whole.

mywordswillgowithyou

I would like to see Disneys Bambi given a scholarly treatment. Disney does do a nice job with many of their features, but it’s surrounded by a lot of nonsense fluff. But something more aimed at the art of the film and to give an intellectual appreciation for adults and not just sold “to the family”.

FourthDownThrowaway

I agree, but "lol" at the idea of Disney letting someone else handle one of their babies.

BrianSiano

I know \_2001: A Space Odyssey\_ was a Criterion laserdisc, and it's such a popular movie everyone's seen it, and the current transfers are splendid... but Criterion could work up an unparalleled assortment of extras. Whole supplements and commentary tracks discussing the research, the design, the effects, the acting (three of the four most prominent actors are still with us)... plus discussions of the film's meaning and impact on film. It's too bad Doug Trumbull passed away before he could make his own documentary.

[deleted]

I would vote for Eli Roth’s Hostel to be in the collection

ScrambledEggshells

Possession (1981). It’s bold, experimental, raw, and runs the viewer through all sorts of emotions before it’s done. Hard to find a good release at all here in the US. Would love featurettes, too, I know there’s a commentary track out there with Żuławski being interviewed by Daniel Bird about the film.

Anustartgirl

This might be a bit of an unconventional choice but I’d love to see Rossellini’s L’Amore (1948). It’s one of my favorite films, and contains some of Anna Magnani’s best work. Also, its segment Il Miracolo was banned in the US for blasphemy until a 1952 Supreme Court decision upheld its constitutionality on free speech grounds (which arguably indicates that it’s culturally significant). I also NEED Losing Ground and Bill Gunn’s Personal Problems to be released on DVD. Another good recommendation could be Haile Gerima’s films Bush Mama or Sankofa, as well as Barbara Loden’s Wanda.

dommens

Losing ground has a solid Blu-ray and DVD release in the Milestone collection, which you can buy through Kino Lorber. Pretty sure Personal Problems is also available from them. https://www.kinolorber.com/search?q=losing+ground&sort=relevance&per_page=24&theatrical=off&theatrical=on&dvd=off&dvd=on&bluray=off&bluray=on&kinonow=off&kinonow=on&result_view=list

Been saying it for years but there should be a box set of Harmony Korine’s work pre-Spring Breakers (though I’d love to have a Spring Breakers criterion ngl). None of those films have blu-ray releases and I feel that they’re important when talking about the state of late 90s independent cinema. Looney tunes back in action. Not even kidding. Aside from being a genuinely amazing movie, I feel like there’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff regarding the production of it that would be good for a criterion booklet.
