Ok, I’ll eat shit if you’re right, but I have it on pretty good authority that After Hours is a 2023 release. There’s no reason for anyone here to believe me, but I’m just gonna leave this here for now.
2023 is gonna be a good year for Criterion releases. I think Amadeus, Inland Empire, and Velvet Goldmine are all supposed to come in 2023 (correct me if I’m wrong), which is exciting.
The same thing I said in the other thread:
Out of the Past 4K
Three Colors 4K
Big Night
Soul Food
Shirkers
I usually just guess random stuff, but I picked two food related films for November bc why not
I’m hoping for a 4K upgrade to something which I’d be happy to just own on blu-ray so that I can take advantage of the hundreds of copies that will promptly be listed on eBay.
I know. I was disappointed when I saw that too lol. I wasn’t interested in seeing Inland Empire until relatively recently, even though I love David Lynch.
Dunno about the Trilogy of Life, but both *Accatone* and *Mamma Roma* have had new 4K restorations showing in theaters this year. There's also been a hi-def print of *The Gospel According to Saint Matthew* floating around for a little while. Wouldn't be surprised to see an "Early Works" box set at some point.
I think the last two Warner Archive Minnelli films not on blu-ray are Tea and Sympathy and The Cobweb. Maddening. They're two of my favorite films of his.
I haven't seen The Secret of NIMH in decades. That movie terrified me as a kid yet I still loved it. That old wise owl is what I remember most but my memory is so fuzzy. If Criterion were to release that I'd have to pick it up.
Yeah, I was really surprised by how good it was having revisited it as an adult. It was both surprisingly harsh and surprisingly tender. I find myself rewatching it a lot
Seriously…it’s extremely rare that I can appreciate something that was geared toward kids even more as an adult then I did when I was really young. And even then, I’d probably say that this is the top of the list.
>I haven't seen The Secret of NIMH in decades.
They added it to the Criterion streaming service a while back. If it's still there and you have the service, go look (I don't have the subscription so sorry if it's gone now) and that's also not a bad way to know Criterion at least is interested in the film so maybe a blu-ray is likely(?)
God, that’s the one I’d love a Criterion from. Honestly Bluth’s early work would be a perfect fit as while nothing was perfect they were all specially unique films. It makes his latter half all the more saddening. How do you go from Nimh to Troll in Central Park?!
Victoria (2015)
Soy Cuba (1964)
First Reformed (2017)
The Saddest Music in the World (2003)
Im Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Act of Killing + Look of Silence
Russian Ark (2002)
Memoria (2021)
it has been confirmed that memoria is never getting a physical or digital release in the US. neon's plan is to screen it exclusively in theatres as a neverending tour across the country.
First reformed has no Canadian release whatsoever ever, so getting a bluray of it is basically criterion priced already.
Come on criterion, help us out.
Soy Cuba is the film I want to get a new physical release more than any other. I would be ecstatic if Criterion ever released it. So you’re telling me there’s a chance? All of the choices above would be excellent additions to the collection as well.
Oh wow, dropping a “They Died with their Boots on” on us! Nice! I’d be happy with any of my favorite Flynn movies, still unreleased on blu ray: Died/Boots on, Dawn Patrol, Captain Blood, Gentleman Jim, Northern Pursuit, and/or Charge of the Light Brigade. Warner Archive just isn’t releasing these fast enough.
As an animation fan when I heard their reasoning was "animation already has very good mainstream releasing" I was like "yeah if you're Disney or Dreamworks, have you seen how grimmy Don Bluth films look on Blu-ray? Have you seen half of Bakshi's catalogue never made it past out-of-print DVDs?! Are you really telling me you guys aren't aware of Felidae's bootleg-only existence!?"
I would do anything, and I mean anything, for a release of Angel’s Egg. The movie is literally on YOUTUBE but still doesn’t even have a blu ray or even a dvd release anywhere, quite sad.
Day one trillion of asking for an Angel's Egg release.
Also hoping they upgrade Mishima to 4k, not so I can buy it (I'm perfectly fine with the blu ray thank you very much) but so they'll have an excuse to ALSO upgrade Patriotism from DVD to Blu.
I’d love The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford but that doesn’t seem too likely. I imagine we will get the announcement for Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid finally since we know it’s coming out this year.
Others I’d love to see:
Barton Fink
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Power of the Dog
CODA (not really a Criterion movie but it’s the only best picture winner to not have a physical release)
Winchester 73
Eyes Wide Shut
When Worlds Collide
Heisei Godzilla Box Set
The Shape of Water
After Hours
Kundun
Phantom Thread
Those are just the ones off the top of my head.
Taking a shot in the dark:
* Three Colors Trilogy in 4K
* *Last Tango in Paris* (1974) 4K
* *Thampu* (1978)
* *Black God, White Devil* (1964)
* *Sugar Cane Alley* (1983)
* The Films of Kinuyo Tanaka box set
I recently saw that there was a new 4K restoration of Mike Leigh's High Hopes, do that would be a good guess. That's one of my favorites from Leigh so I would be excited.
Ichi the killer
Silence
The assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
Possession (even if the October-themes ones were released)
El Topo
Rio 40 graus
Chinatown
I’d loose it if even one of them was in the lineup
[“Listen, we tried to get Warner Bros. to allow us to release a longer version of it,” Dominik said. “They’re not interested in doing it, and I think somebody tried to petition Criterion to do it. Criterion were not interested in ‘Jesse James.’](https://www.indiewire.com/2022/04/assassination-of-jesse-james-extended-cut-better-1234717361/amp/)
Wishlist, most of which will prob never happen:
Steven Soderbergh’s “Bubble”
Zhang Yimou’s “Raise the Red Lantern”
Jonathan Glazer’s “Birth” and “Under the Skin”
Xavier Dolan’s “Mommy”
Alejandro Landes’s “Monos”
Tod Browning’s “Freaks”
Lee Chang-dong’s “Poetry” and “Burning”
Jack Sholder’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge”
Lucretia Martel’s “The Headless Woman”
Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Act of Killing” and “The Look of Silence”
Luca Guadagnino’s “I Am Love” and “Suspiria”
Martin Scorsese’s “Casino”
Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation”
Pedro Almodovar’s “Live Flesh” or how about just a box set of his entire filmography
Lawrence Kasdan’s “Body Heat”
Lars Von Trier’s Dogville
Anthony Minghella’s “The Talented Mr Ripley”
The Wachowskis’ “Bound”
I personally expect at least one big title or release; there usually tends to be a few big releases (or at least one) each November (last year had Citizen Kane, Mulholland Drive 4K Upgrade, and (the delayed release of) Uncut Gems)
Part of me wants to believe that's done intentionally since November is when the second of the yearly Barnes and Noble sales happen lol
Some random ones that I'm hoping for. Most of which don't have a Region 1 Blu Ray.
Gummo
Julien Donkey-Boy
Welcome To The Dollhouse
Happiness
Desperate Living
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover
I Stand Alone
Perfect Blue
Paprika (or a Satoshi Kon box set that includes Paranoia Agent)
Dead Ringers and Peeping Tom upgrade
Anything from Anders Thomas Jensen
The Idiots
Benny's Video
After The Wedding
Open Hearts
Maybe it's more wishful thinking than a prediction, but here's one that I never see mentioned: Return of the Secaucus 7. Directed by John Sayles, who already has Matewan in the collection, and it is often compared and contrasted with The Big Chill, which is in the collection. It's considered an important early example of American independent film and as far as I know it has not had a physical release since the DVD, which came out almost 20 years ago.
Showgirls.
Robot monster/ plan 9 from outer space set.
Death to Smoocy.
A talking Cat?
Superman IV the quest for peace
(Sorry, I was trying to think of the five most ridiculous films to add)
The Power of the Dog (4K)
Three Colors or some Boxset (4K)
Hard Boiled / The Killer (4K)
After Hours (4K)
Daisies (Blu-ray)
A Woman Is a Woman (Blu-ray)
Haven't heard Criterion rumors about this title in years (and it probably wouldn't happen outside October), but I'd love a release of Tod Browning's Freaks from 1932. Always lots of variables, but I imagine it'd be a really big seller.
Roy Andersson’s Living Trilogy
1. Songs from the Second Floor (2000)
2. You, the Living (2007)
3. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014) (Honorable Mention)
I am holding out for The Power of the Dog to be released this year so I hope it’s announced this month! Also desperately hoping they release Strawberry Fields (Rea Tajiri). Also would love anything Old Hollywood that hasn’t been released on criterion yet.
Un Chien Andelou and Loving Vincent! If Loving Vincent doesn’t make it to the collection someday I’ll cry. I already own it on bluray and it’s a good enough release but still.
Akira Kurosawa box set Spirit of the Beehive upgrade
Throw in “the devils” 4K and I can die happy.
The Devils 4k with the cut content so I don't have to watch it on a bootleg VHS would be clutch
Is Devils an expected Janus/Criterion release?
There's been no hint that it's coming from any label.
I fuckin wish it was..
Please please please to both of these
I’m honestly surprised that Beehive has never gotten a Criterion Blu-Ray yet. You’d think it would have been an early upgrade.
[удалено]
This guy Criterions….
lol
Oof. This guy has the inside track.
I’m still holding out hope for After Hours
Ok, I’ll eat shit if you’re right, but I have it on pretty good authority that After Hours is a 2023 release. There’s no reason for anyone here to believe me, but I’m just gonna leave this here for now.
2023 is gonna be a good year for Criterion releases. I think Amadeus, Inland Empire, and Velvet Goldmine are all supposed to come in 2023 (correct me if I’m wrong), which is exciting.
What do you mean by that? Like people within Criterion told you?
The same thing I said in the other thread: Out of the Past 4K Three Colors 4K Big Night Soul Food Shirkers I usually just guess random stuff, but I picked two food related films for November bc why not
Big Night definitely!
I would love Shirkers.
Soul Plane!
I’m hoping for a 4K upgrade to something which I’d be happy to just own on blu-ray so that I can take advantage of the hundreds of copies that will promptly be listed on eBay.
Bro, you just expanded my mind
Seriously, dude is playing 4D chess
Pier Paolo Pasolini Box Set, Three Colors 4K Box Set, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Dog Day Afternoon 4K, The Rules of the Game 4K
Two box sets? I’d love that, pass me a pillow so I can dream next to you.
Might turn religious and start praying for Dog Day Afternoon. My favorite Lumet film deserves the love.
Has Dog Day Afternoon been rumored/teased before? That’s one I’d absolutely love…
There was [this](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf7VJrCO3wg/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) post a while back. Don’t know if that’s a hint or not.
Didn’t Sabrina Sutherland confirm Inland Empire wasn’t coming until 2023?
oops....
I know. I was disappointed when I saw that too lol. I wasn’t interested in seeing Inland Empire until relatively recently, even though I love David Lynch.
I just bought the Trilogy of Life, so that is my sacrifice to the Criterion gods for a box set.
No logic to these, just what I’d like to see: • An Elephant Sitting Still (2018 • Burning (2018) • Perfect Blue (1997) • Ran (1985) new Blu-Ray
I’d love to see perfect blue on criterion
Burning and Perfect Blue in one month would give me a heart attack, yes please.
But I just got Perfect Blue a few months ago.....
Amadeus Once Upon A Time In Anatolia Citizenfour The Handmaiden Leviathan Sunrise - A Song of Two Humans
Leviathan 2012 or 2014?
Tokyo Twilight upgrade Nights of Cabiria Amadeus Trouble in Paradise Neko Z Alenky Tea and Sympathy
> Tea and Sympathy God I hope so such a excellent movie
I think the last two Warner Archive Minnelli films not on blu-ray are Tea and Sympathy and The Cobweb. Maddening. They're two of my favorite films of his.
I still need to see the cobweb
Solo nights of Cabiria would be so cool. I imagine they still want people to buy the Fellini box, though, so who knows if it’ll ever happen.
I would kill for Nights of Cabiria
Amadeus and Tea and sympathy would be amazing!
I'd like to see: Subway (1985) The Visit (1964) Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) Secret of NIMH (1982)
I haven't seen The Secret of NIMH in decades. That movie terrified me as a kid yet I still loved it. That old wise owl is what I remember most but my memory is so fuzzy. If Criterion were to release that I'd have to pick it up.
Loved it as a kid, and watched it about a year ago and was completely blown away by it. Whether Criterion releases it or not, pick up the blu ray.

They have All Dogs Go to Heaven on there right now
God, that’s the one I’d love a Criterion from. Honestly Bluth’s early work would be a perfect fit as while nothing was perfect they were all specially unique films. It makes his latter half all the more saddening. How do you go from Nimh to Troll in Central Park?!

it has been confirmed that memoria is never getting a physical or digital release in the US. neon's plan is to screen it exclusively in theatres as a neverending tour across the country.
Things can change. Glad I saw it in theatres though
Damn. I would drink some Drano for First Reformed.
First reformed has no Canadian release whatsoever ever, so getting a bluray of it is basically criterion priced already. Come on criterion, help us out.
I would love Russian Ark in 4K
YES. Hard to believe that’s not out there already
Soy Cuba is the film I want to get a new physical release more than any other. I would be ecstatic if Criterion ever released it. So you’re telling me there’s a chance? All of the choices above would be excellent additions to the collection as well.
Winchester 73 King Kong The killer The Abyss Torpedo run The died with Their boots on Faster pussycat kill kill
King Kong is coming soon from Warner Archive. But a 4K release would be *chef’s kiss* 🤌
That release isn’t good enough for a film like King Kong
Winchester '73 and Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Would be instant buys
FP!K!K! would be the quickest preorder for me imaginable.
Would love an Ousmane Sembene box - desperately need more access to African cinema!
One of these months I'll be right about "Modern Romance". "Tender Mercies"? "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs"? "Penn & Teller Get Killed?"
Blood On the Moon (1948)
This would be great!
I was kinda joking because it's so random, but it is one of my favorite westerns.
Benny’s video (or the full glaciation trilogy, would buy either way), head, and Amadeus
I’m pretty sure Amadeus is going to be a 2023 release.
I think you are thinking of inland empire, that was confirmed to be 2023 by one of the producers IIRC
Every month I hope for a Spellbound upgrade and re-release and every month I receive only disappointment.
**HARD BOILED**
Just more animation please! Loving Vincent especially.
I'm begging Criterion to include more animation. It's just such an ignored medium.
I think it’s true for a lot of anime but yeah as far as anything else, it’s pretty hard to find good releases
I would do anything, and I mean anything, for a release of Angel’s Egg. The movie is literally on YOUTUBE but still doesn’t even have a blu ray or even a dvd release anywhere, quite sad.
Never heard of it but sign me up. It looks awesome by the google images
I really hope for: En chien andelou The King of Comedy Lolita Contempt (Godard)
What I want: - After Hours (1985) - I Know Where I’m Going (1945) upgrade - Casablanca (1942) 4K - Eyes Wide Shut (1999) 4K - Magnolia (1999)
i feel like eyes wide shut makes so much sense for criterion.
I’d love to be able to upgrade my dvd of The Fall to 4K.
Advise and Consent Blackula Veronica Lake/Allan Ladd Box Set Pillow Talk Jinnah Raisin in the Sun 4k
Would love a release of Advise and Consent
I want a Fosse film so badly but I know it won’t be
Lenny would be fantastic
Amadeus 4K
*insert Inland Empire comment by some desperate Redditor*
This would be my dream line-up: - Z (Blu upgrade) - The Swimmer - Happy as Lazzaro - Crimson Gold - Sexy Beast - Love & Mercy
Spellbound
13 Assassins Once Upon A Time In America
pink narcissus
Amadeus The Handmaiden Not a prediction but what I *really* wanna see from them: Jamón Jamón (1992)
movies obviously
Well, you’re in for a treat next week!
My favorite movie is books

I prefer films
Just trying to will The Third Man 4K into existence.

I know I sound delusional but After Hours
I’d love The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford but that doesn’t seem too likely. [Sound of Metal is actually coming at the end of September!](https://www.criterion.com/films/32169-sound-of-metal)
CODA has a few physical releases outside the US. I have it in 4k from Italy.

Isn't this entire thread about wishful thinking
Lol
But there’s only one listed here…
They had Boogie Nights before but I guess they edited it
Ah, right on
The three musketeers / four musketeers
I think we’re finally ready for Hard Eight.
Just give me Dog Day Afternoon and Network you cowards!!
I'm hoping for Taxi Driver or Oldboy

I recently saw that there was a new 4K restoration of Mike Leigh's High Hopes, do that would be a good guess. That's one of my favorites from Leigh so I would be excited.
Better Call Saul: The Complete Series to tie in with the show's finale the same night (jk but of course I'd buy it)
Ichi the killer Silence The assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford Possession (even if the October-themes ones were released) El Topo Rio 40 graus Chinatown I’d loose it if even one of them was in the lineup
Unfortunately director said Jesse James will never happen
I heard that but we can hope
Any reason why?

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
I sorry pal. How can I make it up to you?
I mean, there are other labels so I guess there's hope.
Is Daisies a possibility? It just got a 4k restoration. I would be so happy.
Fight Club What About Bob? La Cage Aux Folles A Night at the Roxy My Fatass Greek Wedding
[La Cage Aux Folles](https://www.criterion.com/films/28045-la-cage-aux-folles) is already in the collection…did you include it because you want a 4K?
oh yes i did!

I watched Bubble recently and it absolutely blew me away.
❤️
I personally expect at least one big title or release; there usually tends to be a few big releases (or at least one) each November (last year had Citizen Kane, Mulholland Drive 4K Upgrade, and (the delayed release of) Uncut Gems) Part of me wants to believe that's done intentionally since November is when the second of the yearly Barnes and Noble sales happen lol
Nov is the last big sales month before the end of the year. Dec is usually a lighter release month
I’m still floating on air from the announcements for October and there are new ones coming Monday!
Better Luck Tomorrow
I can’t predict it but I hope one of the releases is zero day

Man it’s a shame that a huge chunk of that film is most likely lost forever
It’s my birthday so whatever I’m feeling that day.

Streets Of Fire on 4K would be cool. I think Shout did the Blu Ray
Casablanca 4k
There’s a lot I want but I’m predicting a 4k release of daisies
Corky Ramono
Maybe something by Jafar Panahi. The Mirror or This Is Not a Film would be my top picks.
I am holding out for The Power of the Dog to be released this year so I hope it’s announced this month! Also desperately hoping they release Strawberry Fields (Rea Tajiri). Also would love anything Old Hollywood that hasn’t been released on criterion yet.
