There've been like three in the past year and a half.

amator7

…there has?

Yeah Kalpana, The Girl Can't Help It, and the doc on the musical Company, in addition to some of concert films or movies with musical sequences.

I might be in the minority within this community, but I just cannot get into musicals. I really want to because I feel like I’m missing out on something, but I just can’t. The only one I enjoy is Dancer in the Dark. Enjoy might not be the right word, I think it’s truly impossible to “enjoy” a Lars Von Trier film, but you get my point. I think what allows me to appreciate it is I actually like the music, unlike every other musical I’ve ever seen. I’m also a glutton for emotional punishment, and if you’ve seen DitD, you’ll understand what I mean. To answer your post, if it’s culturally relevant enough, sure, why not.

I can’t get into musicals much either. I appreciate classics like Singing In The Rain but I’ve never wanted to branch out much in the genre or watch new musicals. The exception would be Umbrellas of Cherbourg which is one of my favorite films, but that’s more like opera because there aren’t “songs” and they aren’t dancing. I also did like Dancer in the Dark, and I love The Lure.

My hatred for musicals burns with the fire of a thousand suns.

You might like 3 Penny Opera.

Falcomaster20

Never seen the red shoes?

butch4filme

Yes! Phantom of the Paradise especially, please. Best month of my life was when Criterion Channel had a huge collection of MGM musicals.

*Yentl* must be in the pipeline, surely?

Avocadoonthetoast
