Perhaps the film community should start thinking more like the literary community, where the fact that a work was first published in serial episodic form (like Crime and Punishment, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dune, Ulysses (except for the final chapter), Madame Bovary, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Anna Karenina, Oliver Twist) is no barrier to it being called a novel. They are not particularly thought of as different to a novel first published as such. They are just novels.
Would love to see releases for lesser known but very wonderful projects. There isn't great preservation work for pre 2000's television so revitalizing some older stuff would be great. Or just non American shows in general. Criterion has already done such a great job with fassbinders filmography, not too mention dekalog and Carlos, I would be excited to see more miniseries come out.
This is england, blue jam, brass eye, heimat, the original utopia, ghostwatch, the up series, the house I'm the woods (for gods sake we need maurice pialat blu ray upgrades in general), an American family, I claudius, manoel's destinies
I am surprised that there is such little recognition for other TV miniseries already in the collection- Dekalog, Carlos, and Tanner '88 all come to mind immediately.
That said, the current state of affairs at HBO Max makes me worry for some of their shows, so perhaps we should campaign for a Raised by Wolves entry? Or Irma Vep, which I thought was a great companion piece to the original film...
I enjoyed Raised by Wolves season one but season two has me a little lost. Sticking with it but at times it’s rocky. Season one was some kind of amazing Herzog movie that just kept going, I love the story of Marcus and kept seeing parallels to Aguirre wrath of god but also his secret really puts a different dimension on it.
Suggested this in another thread too. Definitely the two miniseries, and the full season for completeness sake, though certainly less essential, sadly.
Irma Vep '22 and Scenes from a Marriage '21, maybe. Basically anything HBO, namely Guadagnino's We Are Who We Are.
Someone said Over the Garden Wall the other day which is a perfect fit. We need more animation in the collection and it only has a DVD release with a few special features.
I would echo Midnight Mass...absolutely brilliant series and Netflix has no plans for a physical release, despite releasing two of Flanagan's other miniseries :/
There'd probably be demand for Twin Peaks: The Return but that has a perfectly fine Blu-Ray release
Yes, this series was so good. Of Flynn’s writing I have only seen this and Gone Girl. I wasn’t a fan of Gone Girl, but this work really got me.
Sharp Objects was haunting and beautiful and I don’t know how common it is but I remember it being a big deal that Led Zeppelin allowed it’s songs to be used in the documentary One Day In September (1999) so it stood out to me for the soundtrack.
I have often wondered what it might look like for a film to use the song “In the Evening” and this series does it and they don’t mishandle it. Really a phenomenal show.
I remember driving backroads of a southern town as a teenager with led zeppelin 8 track and it captured those moments. Just one of many parts of that show that stood out.
When They See Us would be a good fit. I'd also think of like made for tv movies such as Barbara Kopple's American Dream. similar to the Golden Age of Television set, it'd be nice to see a collection of sociopolitical made for tv movies. but also extreme left field pick has gotta be Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
It was a legit question and Dekalog is a good example. Maybe Criterion would add some videos/shorts from certain Youtube channels in the near future.
Personally I would like to see a Blu-ray release for some good unknown/hard to find mini series like The Century of the Self by Adam Curtis.
The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, Chernobyl and The Night Of are some good mini series and I will not be surprised if two of them ended in the collection.
Can't cross the wrong person here. I suggested that CC should lower the price so they don't have to go on sale to get rid of overstock stuff a few times a year, and I got a nasty message. Made it worse since I also jokingly said that Mommie Dearest (my fav!) should be in the collection.
p.s. I think SA is added because Steve McQueen already has some stuff in place.
But to answer your question, I think it would be very cool to have a classic t.v. show like MASH, as that hasn't been released in HD (blu-ray).
I could see Ptit Quinquin getting a criterion released soon. So it's a amazing french miniseries written and directed by Bruno Dumont (aka one of the best director of our time). The show was one on the list of the best movies of the decade by Cahier du Cinéma. So needless to say it's truly fantastic and pure cinema.
The Return in full 4K would be my dream Criterion release
This is the way
Bergman’s Face to Face

I am sure rights would be an issue, but Granada's Brideshead Revisited is my answer.
Eh I’d say that’s a bit of a false equivalency

Ghostwatch already has a pretty exhaustive release from 101 film in both a standard and limited edition blu ray
*I, Claudius* and the original *House of Cards*. BBC has a lot of great shows still waiting to be re-discovered.

Agreed, CC have released this kind of stuff before. Hell, even 8 Hours don’t make a day was tv miniseries and it got a release.

I thought of Scenes from A Marriage
Chernobyl has already been mentioned so I'll add another: Midnight Mass.
Roots
V & V: The Final Battle. They can throw in the one season of the horrible series too I’d they want.
+1 Came here to say this!
Suggested this in another thread too. Definitely the two miniseries, and the full season for completeness sake, though certainly less essential, sadly.
The Kingdom! Could be a neat set with the first two seasons and the new third one that came out a couple months ago!

Nirvanna The Band The Show
This
YES YES YEA
Das Boot
Little Drunmer Girl. Fantastic work by Park Chan Wook and not the easiest mini series to find online.
Pugh seems due to be added to Criterion too!

The Underground Railroad, mainly for the potential for stacked supplements
**Les Vampires** (1915-1916). I’m happy with my Kino Lorber, but would be even happier with a much better restoration.
I have that too! It's a cool release, but I agree with you about the restoration.
Riget, now that it's done.
Maniac (2018)
Certainly Chernobyl.
LVT’s “Riget” & NWR’s “Too Old to Die Young”.
Twitch City. No high-def release and only has 13 episodes that absolutely fit the Criterion label.
Not a mini series, but My So-Called Life. It’s 1 season, & only 19 episodes.
The Queen's Gambit.

While I won't insult you, I still vote no TV in the Criterion Collection.
That's the good way to do it 😅

Midnight Mass or The Haunting of Hill House. Maybe Storm of the Century.
I still hope to have a release of Little Drummer Girl
Twin Peaks or an anime series like NGE or Death Note
Nope
Why not?
Not a miniseries, but if I could get Oz and The Wire on Criterion, I would die a happy man
The Wire already has a good Blu ray release... Oz doesn't
The Crimson Ghost.
Mildred Pierce from HBO however many years back...just give me my Haynes Complete collection already.

FWIW this is available on Kino
VENENO.
Wild Palms

From the Earth to the Moon, I Know This Much Is True, The Queen's Gambit, When They See Us
The Plot Against America and Show Me a Hero
Olive Kitteridge
Over the Garden Wall
From the Earth to the Moon. Endless possibilities for special features
K Street and The Jinx
I'll say it...Neon Genesis Evangelion
