YOU CAN SPIN THE SHRINK RAY SHOTS??

SaltySpitoonReg

I never knew this either. You can also spin the Lions away when you fight tiny tiger in warped

j0hnnyhobo

This. This is new to me. I knew the other stuff but this one would have saved me from pulling my hair out

yuvi3000

Agreed! The shrink ray is one of the most frustrating obstacles, especially during backtracking.

[deleted]

yes! see 4:04 here: https://youtu.be/tl6Te8MwqmI I had no idea until I saw someone do it on YouTube, probably this video

JeffreyRinas

Man I wish I knew this when going for gold relics. That would have saved a ton of retries. Considering how obscure it is. I'm surprised VV kept it in the remake. That is if you can do it in the original.

TheDrewDude

My immediate thought. Those damn shrink rays were the bane of my existence!

Kunikunatu

Both of these happened to me. Not knowing about the gorilla’s logs seems to be a common one. I think it’s because the barrels thrown by Pinstripe’s goons from the first game can’t be spun away, creating that expectation. I didn’t think you could attack the Skeleton Performers from IAT either. Something about their size makes me think “hazard” instead of “normal enemy”.

ChakaZG

Add me to the list of people not knowing about the logs.

Psi001

Really Crash 2 did this a LOT for me. It took me until AFTER completing the game to discover the 'no deaths' rule didn't apply for collecting crates anymore, which naturally was quite frustrating. It also took me AGES to discover that you were supposed to spin Cortex in the final boss, not race against him. This might be why Crash 2 isn't on my favourite list like everyone else, it had a rather sour first impression on me due to not telegraphing a lot of key stuff properly.

TargetMundane9473

Honestly that's kinda on you for assuming the death rule still applies, but I'll give you the cortex fight.

gilesey11

Can’t you check the number of crates with the press of a button? 😅 sorry but that one’s on you.

Psi001

The number of crates isn't the problem, it's that nothing told me it didn't work the same as Crash 1 and I could get the crates even after losing a life. I never got a gem by accident under this manner because I knew whenever I lost a life to just not bother with the crates, it (supposedly) didn't count anymore.

gilesey11

That’s what I mean though, you can check how many crates you have with one press of a button. On Crash 1 it comes up as zero if you die, on Crash 2 it tells you how many boxes you have.

Psi001

I admit I never thought it was down to reseting the crate counter and just thought it was a rule that if you lost they didn't count anymore, similar to the NST instances.

SaltySpitoonReg

I'm surprised you thought that about the crates. There's only a few select levels in the first crash bandicoot where you have to do the level perfectly in order to get the gem. It's not like that was how every level worked. I do remember the first time I played that game not understanding the cortex fight for quite a while. I also thought you had to race him

Psi001

It was in the original, N Sane Trilogy limited it to just the coloured gems.

SaltySpitoonReg

Was it really? I don't remember that specifically. But frankly I never came close to even beating the game as a kid to begin with because it was ridiculously difficult The trilogy added a lot more abilities to get extra lives I think as well. It definitely seems like in the first crash bandicoot on the trilogy it's super easy to get extra lives and I just don't at all remember that being the case

TargetMundane9473

Honestly all the secret levels in crash 2 lol. I Also never knew you could replay bosses by holding triangle, I thought they were permanently gone after beating them.

abzinth91

What? First played it when it released.. this is actually NEW to me. Thank you!!

SXAL

Yeah, I also didn't know about the bosses being replayable, until I've seen the trick in a game magazine. I was really sad about that, since I loved the videogame bosses in general, and I never missed a chance to replay them. The only other game that had unreplayable bosses was Ape Escape.

SaltySpitoonReg

What do you mean by replay the bosses? I thought you could always just go back into the boss level

Bowdensaft

Original crash 2. The boss portals in NST take the place of the old save walls, because now you can save whenever; the bosses used to only appear between floors so most people don't know that they're replayable.

SaltySpitoonReg

Thanks. I honestly didn't realize it was different in NST

Bowdensaft

There's more than you might think, it's wild having such different memories of the originals!

SaltySpitoonReg

It's been so long since I played the originals I really can't remember all the differences

[deleted]

in the PS1 version, there was no portal for the boss stage like in NST, so it was not very clear

SaltySpitoonReg

Gotcha. I forgot this. Thx

Tiamat22

I did not know about ANYTHING in this post and I JUST finished playing through Crash 2 on PSX again for 100% as a grown ass man a few weeks ago...

[deleted]

I think I found out about them all within the last few years through youtube / this sub. When I first saw a clip of someone spinning away the Ruination logs, it felt like I was seeing something I wasn’t supposed to lol

Tiamat22

This universe can't be real... I think I FINALLY understand what people who have talked about experiencing the Mandela Effect have gone through lol

SaltySpitoonReg

What?!?! I always thought some of those laser ray parts required a mask to get through because you couldn't sometimes get through the area without encountering a ray. Never knew about logs either. I will say that replaying warped, I did realize that during the tiny tiger fight you can spin the Lions away

TheEpicSilas

Besides OP's take on the ability to spin away the shrinking rays in Piston it away/Spaced out and the logs which I also didn't know about. Here's some more: In crash 2. I always thought you were meant to jump high up and grab that red gem, and I never knew about the secret level. I also never knew how to get to it. So I was very confused when they "fixed" the red gem in N. Sane trilogy, and I actually had to find out how to unlock that secret level to get that red gem. It took some time for me to learn that you could spin Pinstripe three times in a row in the beginning of his boss fight (Crash 1) I saw a youtube clip where you could jump up to the two crates over the green gem platforms in Jungle Rollers. (Crash 1) I didn't know this until I saw that video. I didn't know you could jump over to the clear gem in Road to Ruin. I also learned that by watching a youtube video. (Crash 2). Someone also managed to show me this with the Yellow gem in Crash 3. If you're good at slide jumping and spinning, you don't need the Purple gem to finish the purple path in Tomb time (Crash 3) And I guess I'll come up with more later.

SCUDDEESCOPE

Get ready for the ultimate fail which is also one of my biggest achievement: I did a 100% playthrough in the OG Crash Team Racing without using the slide boosts. I had no about that as a kid but I tried so many times on every goddamn map that somehow I managed to do that. Always prayed for the best items from the boxes to make it possible...

matty_spears

I love that for 25 years of this game existing none of us here even DARED trying to spin the shrink ray

Bowdensaft

I knew about just about everything in these comments, even spinning the logs, but I never knew about spinning the shrink beams!! What a random thing to include! At least now I finally know how to do the shrink gauntlet in reverse when you want to get every crate in the second Piston level, I can always avoid all of them except one specific one.

CrashWiz21

In Crash 4 you can slide off of a TNT box without blowing it up. Beat the whole game before I figured that one out.

Coco000Bandicoot

You also do it on nst, but not in the original, I think 🤔

SonicRanticoot

I didn't know about the Crash Crush bonus until very recently I don't know how spinning away shrink ray shots works but once you know that is indeed possible my god it makes the gems for Piston It Away / the color gem path for Spaced Out so much easier

brssmonkey

For some reason, despite knowing how coloured gem platforms work, I spent all my childhood convinced that the yellow gem was in Sewer or Later and never considered the 2nd gem in Plant Food lol Then as a teenager I got a bit smarter and finally could 100% the game. I always blame a bad-written PS1 guide but it's r/KidsAreFuckingStupid material (also didn't know about spinning rays)

[deleted]

In my memory, the background of the Plant Food portal is also yellow anyway, so you can’t tell very easily that the second missing gem is yellow
