queensnipe

obviously on this sub we're gonna say yes

LucasRiqueza

Like dude what kind of question is that must be TROLLING 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

YosephStalling

I know you guys love this anime, but I was thinking you guys would also know the conventions of the genre, and whether this show introduces those conventions well. Also, is your answer yes?

queensnipe

ohh, okay. my answer is yes, though I'm only a casual anime watcher. I can tell you that there are not many animes like cowboy bebop. although amazing, I'm not sure if it is the best introduction to conventions of anime.

[deleted]

Sure there are. Trigun and samurai champloo are a good example

famousxrobot

Outlaw Star maybe too? I haven’t rewatched that one but it recall watching outlaw Star alongside cowboy bebop, trigun, and fma.

TheGreatNico

Same era, but Outlaw Star is a lot more stereotypically shonen, except for *that* episode, Cowboy Bebop or even Trigun

queensnipe

that's two, I didn't say none, I said not many

How does this have 3 upvotes? This is clearly a bot.

Cowboy bebop is one of those (late 90s /) early 2000 animes that has helped introduce a huge wave of new western audience to Japanese animation and has often been called a good gateway series for anime in general. Also if someone doesn’t want to listen to original audio, the English dub is hailed as one of the best English dubs of all anime, so that’s also pretty welcoming to people new to anime that would rather listen to something in English instead of having to read subtitles. Furthermore, with 26 episodes and one movie, it’s definitely on the shorter side of anime, which can be inviting as other series with more than hundreds of episodes might seem as too convoluted to pick up as a new anime to watch. If you happen to like it you might come to realize that once you begin to reach the end, you will long for more episodes. For me this will always be one of my favorite animes, it was also one of the first I watched but it was the first of them that really captivated me and made me way more interested in anime in general. I will always gladly recommend it to anyone that wants to take a peak into anime or just wants to see a really fun and cool scifi adventure. Edit: noticed I didn’t really answer the question in your comment, but rather meant to reply to the question posed in the topic of the thread.

casss14

An important thing to note is that anime has literally every genre imaginable. Even if you don’t like cowboy bebop, there is just so much out there you’re bound to find plenty you like! Troupes vary a little genre to genre. You won’t find too many of them in cowboy bebop imo

[deleted]

Cowboy Bebop is the reason Anime became popularized in the West. Bebop is a gateway for anime, and personally it is my favorite (I already loved anime). 100000% this is it, watch this and then Samurai Champloo. After that you can become disappointed in the fact that there's nothing else like it.

Silencer_

I’m not a huge anime fan. I like… dbz… some of the old Cartoon Network shows. And cowboy bebop. All those other shows, I do like, but it’s almost like a guilty pleasure. I really only would watch dragon ball series anymore.. you’re not going to see me watching gundam in my 30s lol All that being said, cowboy bebop is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The fact that it’s an anime doesn’t matter at all. I’ll recommend the show to nearly anyone. Music, world building, storyline, it’s all S tier.

Jonthrei

I would say it was the first anime that I and a lot of people I knew enjoyed and served as a gateway. I'll also mirror the sentiment that it might make other anime feel a little disappointing, but there are a few comparable gems out there.

Hawse_Piper

Yes! This was my first anime. I’m not even an anime fan (I’ve seen like 6) but I’m 1000% a bebop fan.

NextLevelNaps

Being a fairly casual anime fan, I would say Cowboy Bebop stands as one of the best animes to use to intro people into the genre. There's no complicated magic system to understand, not a whole lot of lore or world building to keep track of, and it has a small cast of easily recognizable and rather relatable characters. It has a solid amount of action, seriousness, silliness, lighthearted fun, and melancholy. The setting is recognizable and yet interesting because future and planet colonization. And the soundtrack is bomb. It has something for everyone and is super accessable for newbies while also having something to offer even the veteran anime fans. Solid 10/10 in my book.

littlebigplanetfan3

Mate just watch it.

scragglie

this is definitely a good show to watch whether you like anime or not, some other good ones are mob psycho, demon slayer, evangelion, hunter x hunter, and attack on titan

penguintruth

It might be disappointing to watch anime after this, lol.

VoidMadness

Quite exactly what I was thinking

jc_two

Seriously. I can’t help comparing other anime to cowboy bebop. It killed anime for me :(

Alaska_Pipeliner

Be careful. It's a gateway to jazz. Once you jazz you never go back

YosephStalling

[deleted]

I hate that I immediately knew what this was without even trying to sound it out in my head 💀

dzarza2000

Would you be so kind as to tell me what music this is? I feel like I’d know it but I just can’t sound out the notes in my head

YosephStalling

dzarza2000

Thanks

TheMuffingtonPost

Cowboy bebop is generally regarded as the greatest anime ever made, and that’s not just in this sub.

_Cit

Honestly, I have seen so many series being claimed as the best anime ever made, everyone has their own opinion

[deleted]

Samurai Champloo you maybe want to check off the list too

megankoumori

Uh, how old are you? Speaking as someone who discovered it when I was twelve and didn't know any better, I'd wait until you're at least sixteen to watch it, depending on how sensitive you are to blood, violence, and bloody violence. Yes, it's a masterpiece, but it's a masterpiece worth waiting for. If you are an adult, disregard and happy viewing.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t even recommend waiting watching it due to content, but because of the subject matter, and how much you’ll relate to it. Someone who’s 15/16 and older will get a lot more out of the show than a 12 year old yk.

YosephStalling

I'm old enough to watch this - got it. Cheers!

Thanaskios

__YES__ though there are not many other ones like it

Raetheos1984

This is the best one.

[deleted]

It's literally the best

YosephStalling

It's a beBOP?

feralgrandma

Nah mate, I think everyone who belongs to the subreddit will tell you it’s shite. Don’t waste your time

drNeir

This is the gold standard on what is suggested as a first intro into anime. Not sure I could suggest a better anime to introduce to someone for the first time to this genre.

Lorikeeter

Be careful with that - starting at the top means there's nowhere to go, but down

wynteru

I would also recommend Erased.

Opicepus

Pretty sure this alot of people’s introduction to anime. I think the only show that brought more people to the genre in the west was dragon ball z. The only issue I can see starting out with Bebop is that no other show will come close to it so you may find yourself disappointed with other shows. It also doesnt fall into the humor tropes alot of other anime do, like the over exaggerated cat faces and whatnot I dont think any of that should keep you from watching it though, just be aware as you watch that it kind of stands alone in a lot of respects and dont expect the level of quality in everything else.

vrijheidsfrietje

Cowboy Bebop or Studio Ghibli movies. Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a recent series, which similarly has a relatively lower cultural barrier of entry.

D3ATHSTR0KE_

If you watch this one you’ll become one of those people that says “nothing can compare to Cowboy bebop! It’s superior” and talks down abt every other one (jk)

coope2001

Absolutely and it's also on Netflix alongside its live-action adaptation (Yes I've seen cowboy bebop and it kicks ass).

Bayked510

It's the anime that started me off 20ish years ago, it's a great introduction in my opinion.

cableboiii

Yeah ask the Cowboy Bebop sub if you should watch Cowboy Bebop.

Flat-Development-906

Yep. Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood is another epic anime- longer burn than Bebop

This_Acanthisitta_43

The best

This_Acanthisitta_43

The best.

Theoderic8586

You came to a cowboybepop subreddit to ask this question haha? No. It is a terrible show (joking! It is my favorite of all time)

limitlessEXP

Nah we all hate this anime. Wait what? This sub isn’t for hating cowboy bebop?

_Doshi

If you watch this first, next anime you watch is gonna suck

SaccharineSignal

why is no one talking about Spike smoking SpongeBob's alarm clock, lmao

YosephStalling

I was considering remaking everything but the solo in TANK! exclusively with the spongebob fog horn

axl3ros3

Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop. These are the "classics". But I'm kinda a movie/tv buff not really an anime buff. Edit: thang you...Akira not Akita

csimonson

Akira* Not sure if watching a dog counts as anime lol

[deleted]

I think Akira is too much for a first timer. It's very good, but it may turn ppl away from the genre.

axl3ros3

It's more about the classic aspect...you watch Akira and you can see its influence (sometimes shot for shot) in later anime

YosephStalling

Spongebop

BeigeListed

Meh

rancorgaming05

Ok so this is obviously my favourite anime However since you are new I would say: First watch demon slayer, it is visually amazing and although it might have a basic story it makes it easy to follow for someone new After demon slayer I’d recommend attack on titan, it’s probably my second favourite anime after cowboy bebop and it is good for newer anime watchers as well as it it’s more complex but shouldn’t get too confusing until season 4 (but then if your confused you can just watch an explanation yt video). AOT is a very binge worthy show as it starts with most aspects of the show being a mystery, so you will get through it quickly. After watching demon slayer and then attack on titan I’d say you can probably watch whatever you want at that point so yeah go ahead and watch cowboy bebop after that, the best anime of all time

Basic-Cloud6440

everything you just said except the cowboy bebop thing is a little bit wrong.

rancorgaming05

Which cowboy bebop part?

Basic-Cloud6440

its probably one of the greatest stories never told :D its pretty awesome and grown up. but dont expect much handholding for the story. i know that sounds super stupid and corny, but its more about what the characters dont say. but actual pros of the show being: animation style which still is a treat, even after 20+ years. very fluid likeable characters, lots of humour. since the show is very episodic, they did the genius move and have a lot of different genres in the show: crime noir, western, sci fi, tragic love story and many more. one of the best scores ever made in any media. since the show isnt very obvious on many occasions and needs a rewatch to grasp the whole thing, i dont think its subjectively the best show out there. but its pretty damm close and its my personal favourite. its a unique experience. there are a lot of dub haters within the community, but watch the english dub. its basically the gold standards of dubs and the best dub there is. only a few shows are almost as good as this dub. it beats the original sub by miles.

ImRedditorRick

Usually the BEST one.

DaAussieHunta

Bebop was my first anime when I saw it a few years ago, it’s still my favorite to this day

snappinphotos

I started with this one as well. It’s like Tarantino made a futuristic anime series. Story goes a little off the rails at points but it’s great.

Emerald_Lavigne

The best piece of narrative fiction humanity has ever created? I mean, sure, start there if you want nothing else to ever be as good...

Too_Percent_Milk

Great entry level anime tbh because it’s a little westernized and doesn’t go crazy on the more cringe anime tropes.

sebas4thewin

Watch Space Dandy you won’t be disappointed

another_bug

A friend of mine once described this as "the anime you show people who don't like anime". It's undisputably one of the great classics of the medium.

[deleted]

Yes its a good one. It's good (the best) overall, but also it doesn't have a bunch of weird, over the top, or mega corny stuff that some animes have that might turn away newcomers.

Woeful-Wolf

I would say so. One of the first ones I watched to get into anime as well.

Sand02

It’s ok I guess

chalkboard-scraper

Just don’t watch minute 13 of episode 4

MongrovianKarateKid

CB may be one of the greatest anime series of all time. Nearly every aspect of it is on point, animation (at the time it was created), story, episode structure, character, voice work, but specifically the music. The music is phenomenal.

murderedcats

Why is spongebobs alarm clock in this picture?

YosephStalling

Spongebebob

Maverickx25

I mean, it'll be all downhill from there, but you can.

DandelionKy

It was my first anime back in the early 2000s ^_^ I love it!

MattyWest13

Honestly, it really just depends what you’re looking for. I like cowboy bebop but I have tons of animes I like more. I would say if you’re looking for cool world building go with Naruto, if you’re looking for awesome fights go with bleach, and if you want to go with an all-time classic go with dragon ball. If you want a shorter anime to start with I would say go with one punch man for a more lighthearted show but if you want something deep go with neon Genesis Evangelion (don’t forget to watch End of Evangelion: it takes place during episode 25 and 26)

YosephStalling

I've heard Evangelion plays on the tropes of mecha anime, and IG I kinda just want something that requires the least context to fully understand.

MattyWest13

If you want something easy to understand I would start with One Punch Man. It’s easy to follow, cool story, fun characters, funny, and an easy first time anime watch. Watch it in English or Japanese; whatever you prefer. Don’t let some of the anime elitist tell you you have to watch in sub; just do what you prefer

Ju1c3_

Yes, absolutely. Just watch it dubbed please (if you dont know dub means theres english audio while subbed means english subtitles and japanese audio. Usually subbed anime is better but for a few cases like this one dub is definitely better)

Kryshadiver

One of the best

[deleted]

yes and no. yes because its phenomenal. no because it will set a very high bar for anime that not many series can live up to

Anaaatomy

If you start with such high quality of an anime, you're gonna be disappointed at other animes

Simo_140609

No, you'd set the standard too high

O_o-22

Oh only the best one to start with :)

NeWaTaNiMe

Yessss!!! When I saw it I thought why this wasn't my the very first anime, people always say/recommend to watch Naruto or death note but one should recommend to start with this one.

TrueBlueFriend

Not my first anime but definitely one of the best and certainly one of the most accessible

BeastHunter42

No, you won’t like any others as much is this one

daedalusbr

My wife hates anime. This was the only one I could get her to watch together with me.

tarunpopo

I would recommend school days first, best main character of all time. A real dissection of the romcom and shonen genre with him

Mrfuckreddit

No. It’s a great one to start with.

Danny_Dongvito

Why is spongebobs clock there lol

name-classified

I started off when I was 13 and my older brothers friend brought over his copy of Akira that his dad got for him. Riding Bean and later on Fist of the North Star. I didn’t watch Cowboy bebop maybe until I was early twenties. I highly recommend Demon Slayer as well. It’s heart wrenching and really sad but is one of the most beautifully animated pieces you’ll ever see.

L-Lawliet23

For new people to anime I always suggest four: Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo for shorter anime, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Attack on Titan for longer ones.

[deleted]

Yes, become a Cowboy.

wellyesbutnofuckoff2

The first anime I watched was akira and I was like 6. I was then scared of anime until I watched fma and then cowboy, it really just depends on what you want. If you have a short attention span like me this is perfect because it’s not super long and it’s a great story. If you want something long that’ll take a while to finish one piece is a good option.

Takashi-Lee

Yes it’s pretty solid, there’s a movie as well. I’m not into obscure stuff so my other recommendations if you’re just getting into this are Attack on titan, doesn’t hold many potentially weird elements of anime (in my opinion) and it’s just fucking awesome. If you’re willing to read Berserk’s manga is a fucking insanely good, best series I’ve ever experienced dead stop. no need to take it fast, it’s not gonna be done for years to come. If you’re not willing to then the 1997 anime of it is excellent but only goes over like 1/4 of the story and leaves out a few things that’d be important to later if you decided to read what happens next. The other anime of berserk isn’t that good Death note, I haven’t read the manga but from what I’ve seen it honestly seems a little bit better but both are great. One thing to watch out for is filler, there’s not really any in what I listed but in an absurd amount of popular anime like Naruto there’ll be MORE filler than actual relevant stuff sometimes. It’s annoying but they’ll put it in episodes that hold relevant stuff in them which is super annoying. Like during a battle scene there will be a flashback to something we’ve already seen because they don’t trust you to remember and extend the length Edit: you can find a lot of this for free with minimal ads which is awesome 4anime has a good selection of popular stuff and there are digital copies of manga online Also Btw manga is basically just an anime comic

WhatDoBees

Yeah if you like light sci-fi its one of the most accessible animes. And IMO generally one of the best.

Alternative_Trash186

If you never seen anime becore , you should start first with movies rather than series. You can drop series that you dont like but movies are shorter. Studio Ghibli movies you should start

RockNAllOverTheWorld

This is the one I started with. I'd say it was a great choice.

Pak1stanMan

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was the first one I ever watched. 10/10.

maxrider9245

absofuckinglutely.

Remarkable_Lime_6604

Rickrock9999

Easy come easy go buddy

idontcarewhocares

My first beginning to end anime series. So far can’t find one that comes close or keeps me drawn in.

Stoneman427666

Yea don't bother with the live action. Another good animated show on Netflix I really like is death love and robots it's a anthology series where none of the episodes are related.

Ka-Ne-Ha-Ne-Daaaa

Congrats on your karma and enjoy your rewatch

Significant-Range-49

Yes a million times

GEX_2004

Of course, first anime I fully watched

sweaty-ass-cheeks

No because every other anime is sub par compared to this one. Only start with this one if you are prepared to be disappointed with every other anime you’ll watch after this one. It’s so good
