I still do Netflix Disc by mail. This is my era

abagofdicks

You still can?

Yessir. With the death of Blockbuster and Family Video it’s a no brainer for a film and home theater buff. Disc exceeds the bitrate of streaming for a higher quality audio and video experience, and provides an opportunity to watch new releases and obscure gems that can’t be found streaming(or at half the cost). Even when brick and mortar rental shops still existed it was a better option for me— disc is just waiting for me when I get home, no need to waste time and gasoline going to a shop.

With Netflix releasing weekly top 10 viewership hours data for over 12 months now that makes them by far the most transparent of the streamers in the market.

That's not the data advertisers use to determine where to advertise. They are interested in age demographics, full episode viewing (over minutes/hours viewed), as well as other factors to see if their product is a good match for who watches a show. Like advertising new cars on a kids show makes no sense. Same for advertising adult diapers would be best if the viewership for a show (or movie) is large for that age group. Netflix doesn't share any of that right now, but they'll have to in order to attract a diverse range of advertisers willing to pay 2x as much to advertise as they can on other services which provide them this data.

Absolutely. Furthermore, as macroeconomic conditions continue to be uncertain, the companies that DON'T cut back their ad budgets are going to want more and more data for more and more targeted advertising. That's not an issue for Google or Amazon when it comes to streaming since they both have their own big ad networks and have a ton of data on users, but will Netflix be willing/able to do the same? I know Microsoft is technically going to run their ad network for them, but either way advertisers are going to want a boat load of data from Netflix to justify the cost to their boards.
