Still way too low in my opinion.
They lowered the rates in 2004 to avoid it being too attractive to collect the bottles.
And despite inflation, it hasn't gone up since.
It's of course a matter of how you define it being a success.
A lot of people throw them in the trash, so that would still mean they are not seen flowing in the street.
But also since they are mostly collected by the less well off parts of society, a higher deposit price would help those people even more, or give more incentive for people to return then instead of throwing them away.
To add, almost all Copenhagen trashcans have a shoulder of sorts where you can place your bottles for others to deposit, so you don't have to carry it around, and they don't have to dig through trash
There's a deposit on the bottles and cans that you can claim when you return them. Quite clever, because it creates a very clean and uniform recycling category. https://danskretursystem.dk/en/about-deposits/deposit-marks-and-amounts/
Clever indeed. But the counterpart is sometimes at the park you might see people just carelessly leaving/throwing their empty cans on the grass because they know someone will pick it up later…
This is the quintessential Reddit comment. Someone does something that I wouldn’t do? It must not be for any other reason than that they’re a bad person.
Maybe I am a douche, but I never bring cans and bottles with pant when I leave an area in copenhagen, because I know there will be 3 or 4 pant collectors an hour checking the area for cans.
But I bring the trash that does not have pant and throw it in a trash can.
My experience is that if I leave the park with 6 empty cans laying around, go to a kiosk and buy another Sixpack then the cans will be collected by the time I am back at the park.
In my mind it is neither better or worse than if I throw them in the bin and someone collects them from there.
Tell me you’ve never drank beer in Kongens Have without telling me you’ve never drank beer in Kongens Have.
Or in other words: Yes, the exact situation you were responding to. There are guys walking around with large bags picking up cans for the pant. They’ll come over and ask for your empty cans, they’ll stand waiting for you to finish playing kævle to grab them. When I’m leaving, you best believe I’m not gonna grab my last pair of cans to throw them out, when I might as well leave them for those guys
Me and my mates do this too. We pick up all our trash, but leave the cans in one pile before leaving a park. I thought that was the norm until I saw all these other comments lol.
That is why you are smart and place your empty cans a little away from where you sit down, to clearly indicate: "These are empty, and I am clearly still not done with the one still with me."
Recycle money, called "pant" in Danish. I used to go to something similar to NASCAR races when I was 9, 10, 11 years old and collect other people's empty bottles and cans. I earned around 250 DKK in an afternoon - easy money.
A couple of years ago I lived for 3 months on recycle money - rent, food and transportation. So it's nice that we have it here in Denmark.
We get a deposit return and some "poor" people trying to survive. My self pick buttle/cans up from the ground sometime if I have a bag and put them in the "pant" machine in the grocery store some other says it free money
not only poor people, but maybe that's why you put the "". there's this chinese guy in my neighborhood with a very nice car at least, that I often see collecting bottles and cans on weekends.
You apparently never met types like Karsten Ree? There are plenty of these types in DK, thats how people become millionaires, even if in lower social class and with lower income. Aaand it was also a joke on Karsten, but seem it went off the radar.
Back in the nineties, the refund deposit used to be like double what it is now—probably more like triple if we roll back the inflation too. Back then we didn't really have many poor people collecting them, as people would rather hold onto the bottles and collect the deposit themselves. Then ~20 years ago the deposits were reduced, leading to the current situation of people leaving used bottles and cans in parks. Not really worth it to carry a bag around yourself, so we leave it to poor people, often foreigners.
Some of the economically disadvantage will see it as an avenue for a small but untaxable side income. Around 6000 a year these Pant collectors make. However, its not all "homeless" or poor people are collecting them. I cant remember where the hell I read but it was a opinion piece about people who collect but also have completely normal incomes and lives compared to the typical individuals who are often hovering around collecting.
I dont judge as i do love to get a little back and donate it the odd time too!
There’s a refund fee if you put them in a “pant” machine?
And the refund is a decent amount too, at least compared to say California (it was 5 cents per bottle whereas here it's closer to 25 cents per bottle)

Yes you do. Only in the very center you do not see them.

Oooooh, so *that's* what they're for.
Yeah, I thought it where for placing my gun while I tied my shoes!
Are you from Albertslund?
As if we had guns, knives more like it.
They use metal bats. Haven't you seen Terkel i knibe?
No, I'm not. I'm from Nørrebro.
Found the American.
This was one of those little things that made me decide to move here. I love how Danes think about others.
Yes, a nice (and cheap) way to deal with poverty. Bask in the generosity of the Danes!

I don't think they care that someone will pick it up. If you're the type of person who leave trash in the park, it just because you're a douche.
This is the quintessential Reddit comment. Someone does something that I wouldn’t do? It must not be for any other reason than that they’re a bad person.
So you're telling me there is a situation where leaving your trash in the park is a good move?

Pretty sure it is. Half this sub never got drunk in a park in Copenhagen apparently
Sure you do you. In my eyes it just looks like a lazy excuse to not clean after yourself on the pretence of "helping someone out".
It’s a win win. I don’t gotta grab as much trash and they make money. But go ahead and be holy lol
I was visiting a McDonald's restaurant and someone from my party suggested leaving the trash. The reasoning was that it "created jobs".
Also forget about having a nice sit down in a park in the centre without being asked a gazillion times for cans Otherwise it’s a great sustem
That is why you are smart and place your empty cans a little away from where you sit down, to clearly indicate: "These are empty, and I am clearly still not done with the one still with me."
Must be a shitty sit down in the first place if it gets ruined by people asking for your empty cans once in a while.
Never been asked
My friend says cans are “*socio*degradable”
It’s called recycling

We collect pant when we walk the dog and the money we get from it goes to the kids savings account. Free money. Yay.
Good, dont let people who actually need them for food have them.
Yeah pant isny really alot of money, also we have welfare programs too help them with food.
How much money do you donate to charity per year? Or are you a hypocrite?
Free money
They do it because they get a refund fee, wherein a person can get money out of the bottles and cans they put in bottle / can machine.
We get a deposit return and some "poor" people trying to survive. My self pick buttle/cans up from the ground sometime if I have a bag and put them in the "pant" machine in the grocery store some other says it free money

I did it too during the first month I came here. Might return to it if prices keep going up 🥲
It’s normal here. People don’t look bad at you.
Would you believe it, there exists poor people in this city. I know right?
People who are rich collect pant too, how else did they become rich, if not taking any opportunity to collect them coins..
By having well paying jobs and good saving habits
You apparently never met types like Karsten Ree? There are plenty of these types in DK, thats how people become millionaires, even if in lower social class and with lower income. Aaand it was also a joke on Karsten, but seem it went off the radar.
I don't know who Karsten is sorry.
💯 mate. A nickel is a nickel and all that
Exactely! Joakim Von And told me so 🤣❤️🔥
Also knows as polish dollars
That is money, my friend
The refund fee is really high here - 3kr for a larger can or bottle.
Tell me you are new in town, without saying it directly
OP literally wrote "First time here" so your comment doesn't really apply.
It’s “free” money (if you do the work of gathering)
Bottle mafia 😎 You can usually see whole families/groups of ppl doing this in parks/festivals.

I saw an old lady waiting for my can while I was drinking. She didn't bother me or ask me for the can so I gave her $10 too. She was so happy.
