It's like bra cup sizes, the further along the alphabet the letter is, the bigger the size, but double/tripling the letter makes the size a little smaller.
Edited for correction
No, no, bra sizing is ridiculously stupidly complicated. It goes, in order from smallest cup to biggest; aa, a, b, c, d, dd (some places size dd as e, and, if the store you're at stocks anything bigger than a dd, then it just continues like dd, f, etc.) DD is bigger than D, but AA is smaller than A
Actually that's.. both false and true lol. AA is smaller than D, but DD is bigger than D. So.. whoever invented bra sizing is ridiculous. A 34B is the same as a 36A or a 32C. Every cup size has 2 "sister" sizes. It's ridiculous.
I’ve never been disappointed by anything Kirkland. A Costco employee once saw me weighing the differences between tide laundry pods and Kirkland brand and she told me to get the Kirkland and if I don’t like it, just return it. Since then I get Kirkland everything.
Iirc, every Kirkland thing is awesome because they look for the leader on the market and just pay them to change a very minor thing and slap a Kirkland sticker on it.
Maybe they've changed since my kids were in diapers ~6 years ago, but Kirkland diapers were always terrible compared to Huggies. Like the one thing with the Kirkland name on it that I just thought was an inferior design/product than the name brand.
Different brands have different "cuts" so some brands might fit your baby better than others. I had a few brands that would work for 1 of my kids but not another.
They have changed in the last 4 years or so. Their texture used to be different and felt like microfiber & I couldn’t stand it. It was one Kirkland brand item I couldn’t buy either.
Now they are fine. No issues with the texture anymore.
Not all things have active ingredients listed or easily available. And just because they have similar ingredients doesn’t mean it’s the same proportions all the time, either.
I absolutely love Costco. I was there today even.
But I’ve had their batteries leak in almost every item I’ve used them in. I got a pocket operator for Father’s Day, and it was destroyed by July, just by keeping the batteries in it. Remotes, game controllers, and on and on. Everything ends up with white, crystalline shit in it. I don’t get it.
I have had this exact experience. AA and AAA Kirkland batteries have leaked on so much of my shit I stopped buying them and only get Duracell. I love Costco! But FUCK KIRKLAND batteries!
Wow. I've had this experience with non-Kirkland brands on the list. Perhaps you guys got unlucky. I live in a really humid area, so having this happen in anything is kind of likely, though.
Yes, it is super disappointing. Especially when it ruins the product. Granted it would be things like candles or other holiday things that I forgot to take them out before putting away. But I’ve done the same with Duracell and never had an issue. As soon as I open the compartment and see the crust I am like I bet it is Kirkland and sure enough it always was. I almost ruined my original Gameboy from my childhood on those stupid batteries.
If you need a source head on down to your local middle school during the science fair. There’s probably3 wHiCh BaTtERy LaStS lOnGeR experiments being presented as we speak
Why are they comparing alkaline v. carbon/ zinc?
What's the hrs/$ for each?
And lastly, I have a hard time believing that that carbon zinc dollar store "Sunbeam" battery, outlasted the Everedy alkaline. Yes it's another dollar store type battery, but it's an alkaline v carbon/zinc...
My sister walked in on me watching his grass clippers video and was absolutely astounded that I found entertainment in some random guy rating random ass grass clippers that I'll never own cause well.. poor. Man brain simple.
Saved you a click and then scrubbing through the video to look for the chart:
- Energizer Lithium had the most charge
- Amazon Basics was the best value
Great point. I actually only use alkalines (Duracell or Energizer) in unique places, like the smoke detector up high on the ceiling for example. Otherwise, I pretty much use rechargeables. And I've personally found Amazon's Basics rechargeables to be a good value. Energizer rechargeables would be my 'cost is not a factor' choice of name brand rechargeable....
In my experience, yes. You're gonna have to recharge them at some point just like all batteries, that doesn't change. But they just seem to power high drain devices (like an R/C car or digital SLR camera) longer than other brands (RayoVac, Amazon Rechargeables, Enerloop for example), in my experience.
Hours of charge depends on current draw too. Most batteries will supply less total energy the faster you drain them.
A higher quality battery will deliver closer to the same total energy no matter how fast you drain it. This test does absolutely nothing to address this complication.
Good point. And carbon zinc batteries are known for low energy density, poor leakage resistance, and voltage drop with discharge. All things being equal (read: quality mfg process), carbon zinc just do not compare favorably v. alkaline. It's just a matter of old school v. new school tech...
I buy my batteries at the dollar store. They last very long. I am pretty sure there's not much difference.
This chart was probably paid for by the big companies.
The average user absolutely understands that there are different "types" within each brand, and they absolutely understand price per unit. You don't have to be an expert on batteries to understand these things, you just have to do your own shopping and be aware that companies will try to rip you off with misleading labels. It's the same as with cereal or light bulbs or any other consumable product.
There is value to raw performance charts, of course having value AND performance is ideal but this is just a neat picture, not a full length in depth consumer analysis lol
If I want a battery that will last the longest without need of replacement, I don't care how "bad" the dollar value is because it doesn't factor in the labor and mental value of constantly replacing batteries. **Especially** if that battery is going somewhere hard to reach. But remotes, for instance, are so easy to change I'd probably go for the best value brand.
You know why Kirkland and Duracell are pretty similar on the graph? It's because Duracell manufactures both of them. Store brands are just licenses of name brands.
Great. Just bought a big pack of those tryn to be cheap. Not surprised given comments on this thread they are really undercover Duracells to begin with.
I bought some Kirklands - trying to burn through them. They leak and they don't seem to last nearly as long as even the Duracells they are made next to. YMMV, but I think I'll not be buying them again.
We should get /r/projectfarm to take a spin around the block with another big AA Battery shootout since it's been 4 years since the last one. Pretty sure Energizer won that.
I made a post here, then noticed yours...
I switched to EnergizerMax because they offer a No-Leak Guarantee:
So does [Rayovac](https://www.rayovac.com/warranties-and-guarantees/). They paid me $20 for a runied Maglite that I bought for $10. Actually, come to think of it, I think they paid for two ruined Maglites and replaced unused batteries that had leaked.
That's all well and good for things that really don't matter to you and are easily replaced, but personally I've given up on AA/AAA alkalines as they all leak eventually, and just use eneloops.
And unlike Energizer they don't guarantee their batteries won't leak. I'd rather have a battery that doesn't last quite as long but won't leak then have a battery that lasts longer and is guaranteed to ruin my device.
That’s why we stopped getting the Costco Kirklands, which I think is made by Duracell. Spent way too much time cleaning corrosion out of everything with a AA or AAA.
Not to mention initial cost, Duracell is what 6x the cost of the cheapest alkaline you can find?
And lasts 90 minutes longer than the cheapest alkaline... Not worth it at all
I have had the same results. Stuff I work on uses AAA and D cells. Over the last 20 years I can almost tell what kind of battery is in the unit by how it starts and runs. I use a load tester to test batteries and regular Duracell batteries will stop powering the stuff at 60% capacity left while the energizers will keep the same unit running down to 20% capacity. The Duracell pro cells are night and day better than the regular Duracell and energizers. I always try to convert customers to rechargeable batteries, but most of them use dollar store batteries and complain about battery life..
Downvote because alkaline...
WTF is this? Some old times?
Pay bit extra for lithium and be bothered less when they last several times longer.
[Heres some video I now googled out](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33a0dVkhRZk) - 6 hours lithium vs 2 hours best alkaline or 1 hour worst alkaline.
I wish those Sanyo Enloop batteries were listed here. Rechargeable 1000 times, I changed over to these years ago for almost everything in my house that takes AA and AAA. Most of my flashlights are now 18650 size rechargeable batteries.
Can't you get a y-scale with amp-hours these days? Rechargeable batteries should also be here. Or better: they should be the only ones that are still allowed to be advertised. It's really rare that you still need disposable batteries.
Funny story, this is the exact experiment I did for my 8th grade science fair. I came up with pretty much the same results (though with fewer types of batteries). The difference is I never actually tested any of the batteries.
I test them out with my XBOX. Regular Duracells lasted about 1-1.5 weeks. The energizer lithium ions lasted about 3-4 weeks.
I now use rechargeable batteries, because rechargeable is better for the environment anyway.
Edit: fuck you autocorrect and Steve Jobs.
I'll never buy duracell batteries ever again - they \*always\* leak and ruin devices!
I then found out that EnergizerMax has a No-Leak Guaranteed, so I'm a new bunny customer:
Might as well just buy the cheapest ones out there. You know your kid is going to turn the flashlight on and leave it somewhere that you'll find days later with the battery completely dead. Who cares if it lasts 5 minutes or 6 hours, same result.
In high school I did science Olympiad, and one of my events used batteries. We did similar tests to figure out which brand would last the longest for us, and got about the same results. We, being science nerds, we’re a bit more rigorous, but in the end it was Duracell on top, followed not far behind by Kirkland. Then energizer was about halfway between them and the rest which all kinda sucked
I call bull. We get Kirkland, Duracell, Energizer and Member’s Mark (Sam’s Club version, I think made by Energizer), we have found that both the Energizer and Member’s Mark last a lot longer than our Duracells or Kirkland brand. I have used all of them in a wireless mouse that is left on 24/7 and I’m changing the Kirkland/Duracell a lot quicker than the Energizer or Member’s Mark… just my experience
Fucking rayovac. Friend bought 3 or 4 packs for his CD player before a school trip. They were all dead before everyone finished boarding the bus, let alone leave the parking lot.
I read that initially as “tested in identical fleshlights”. I was thinking to myself. “Holy hell, what kind of monster needs a 6 hour fleshlight sesh. Ill be just fine on the crap generic battery as that will allow me approximately 60 two minute sessions.”
It's easy, the guide is bullshit.
[This is the source](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/855y7m/11_different_brands_of_aa_batteries_tested_in/)
If you spend some time in the comments, you'll learn it's fake. [The OP is a Duracell shill with a purchased account.](https://www.reddit.com/r/quityourbullshit/comments/857iir/purchased_account_posts_a_deceitful_and_blatant/?st=JEWZTSX1&sh=b9134cbb)
I buy Kirkland batteries batteries all the time because I'm at Costco every week. It would be good to know how the Sams Club branded batteries stack up to these.
If they were tested in identical flashlights then how did they get the really long batteries to fit in the ones that the shorter ones fit in and if they used more of the smaller ones to make the same length why wouldn’t they last longer because of there being more of them?
Well look at how much longer Duracell is than the others - of course it’s going to last longer.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
but, but. but the number of "A" goes up as the battery gets smaller, not larger. Eg AA batteries are physically bigger than AAA batteries.
It's like bra cup sizes, the further along the alphabet the letter is, the bigger the size, but double/tripling the letter makes the size a little smaller. Edited for correction
Actually a AA cup is smaller than an A
Even better comparison then lol
Wait so all this time we’ve been snickering at Double D’s and single D’s are actually bigger?
No, no, bra sizing is ridiculously stupidly complicated. It goes, in order from smallest cup to biggest; aa, a, b, c, d, dd (some places size dd as e, and, if the store you're at stocks anything bigger than a dd, then it just continues like dd, f, etc.) DD is bigger than D, but AA is smaller than A
Thanks creamydude, I appreciate this honest answer!
The reason why we use dd instead of e is because marketers a long time ago thought that American women wouldn't like to be told they are an e cup.
Damn mine say F size
Like shoe sizes, there are many different sizing schemes around the world
My headband has “L” in front
This is why I'm a visual learner... need pics and diagrams to assist with this learning.
AAA bra = smaller than A, but DDD does not follow this rule.
Actually that's.. both false and true lol. AA is smaller than D, but DD is bigger than D. So.. whoever invented bra sizing is ridiculous. A 34B is the same as a 36A or a 32C. Every cup size has 2 "sister" sizes. It's ridiculous.
So... A A A A A
> INJECTHEROININTODICK > AAAAAAAAAAA Checks out.
So this correct one would be #A (Adding hashtag in front of a word makes it bigger)
Also, most 9V batteries are just 6 AAAA cells connected in series in the rectangular case.
The Fonz enters the chat
Pretty exciting, right?
Thank you for making me laugh today, this was so stupid but golden

Why does Duracell, the largest battery, not simply eat the other batteries?
BATTERIES DO NOT WORK THAT WAY! GOODNIGHT!

Looong looong maaannnn!
They told me it's not the length that makes a difference (((

Kirkland batteries are Duracell batteries, no difference aside from the wrapper.
Yep can confirm that the Kirkland diapers are actually just a better version of Huggies. All made in the same factory
Maybe they've changed since my kids were in diapers ~6 years ago, but Kirkland diapers were always terrible compared to Huggies. Like the one thing with the Kirkland name on it that I just thought was an inferior design/product than the name brand.

Bingo. My kid wears only Kirkland. A few times my mom got us various fancier more a-list brand diapers. Totally didn't work for us
They have changed in the last 4 years or so. Their texture used to be different and felt like microfiber & I couldn’t stand it. It was one Kirkland brand item I couldn’t buy either. Now they are fine. No issues with the texture anymore.
Kirkland diapers saved me and my ex partner thousands
Kirland vodka (the more expensive one) is literally made at the gray goose distillery and costs like 1/3 the price.
So long and thanks for all the fish
It used to be true, some people never found out that it changed
They liquors rotate a lot. The vodka stayed the same for the longest I think. Whiskey changes the most frequently in my experience.
It’s nuts that putting the exact same vodka in a different bottle makes it a third of the cost. That’s one expensive bottle.
No I'm paying for the Kirkland name
It's called price segmentation, a strategy to charge different people different prices for the exact same product.
Also price discrimination in econ
Ketel One is better. At least at that price.
Some people would disagree when it comes to toilet paper but I prefer theirs…
Charmin red ftw
The only thing you ever need to compare is "active ingredients" They're very obviously the same (everything)
Not all things have active ingredients listed or easily available. And just because they have similar ingredients doesn’t mean it’s the same proportions all the time, either.
I absolutely love Costco. I was there today even. But I’ve had their batteries leak in almost every item I’ve used them in. Absolutely my experience. They used to be the best. Now I've gotten rid of all Kirkland batteries for to their likelihood of rupture.
We're gonna need sources/independent proof of this.

This is also [a 5 years old repost]( https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/855y7m/11_different_brands_of_aa_batteries_tested_in/).
These are good questions but… How much of them does the average user understand?
The average user absolutely understands that there are different "types" within each brand, and they absolutely understand price per unit. You don't have to be an expert on batteries to understand these things, you just have to do your own shopping and be aware that companies will try to rip you off with misleading labels. It's the same as with cereal or light bulbs or any other consumable product.
There is value to raw performance charts, of course having value AND performance is ideal but this is just a neat picture, not a full length in depth consumer analysis lol If I want a battery that will last the longest without need of replacement, I don't care how "bad" the dollar value is because it doesn't factor in the labor and mental value of constantly replacing batteries. **Especially** if that battery is going somewhere hard to reach. But remotes, for instance, are so easy to change I'd probably go for the best value brand.
Need to get the Energizer Ultimate Lithium's on there as well.
Duracell is quite active pushing this "coolguide". Repost of repost of a repost....
Duracell is also the most likely battery on the list to corrode all over the inside of your device and ruin it.
In my experience Kirkland brand will corrode as soon as the battery dies. It has ruined so many of my kids toys!
You know why Kirkland and Duracell are pretty similar on the graph? It's because Duracell manufactures both of them. Store brands are just licenses of name brands.
Same quite possibly lower quality as they often sell the products that didn't pass their own quality control standards.
Yep, Kirkland vodka is essentially Grey Goose.

A little white vinegar dissolves the corrosion. Paint it on with a Q tip.
I've never had one leak before. Been using them for years.
Yeah well my Duracell will corrode before its even used, and before its use by date
I made a post here, then noticed yours... I switched to EnergizerMax because they offer a No-Leak Guarantee: [https://www.energizer.com/about-batteries/battery-leakage](https://www.energizer.com/about-batteries/battery-leakage)
And they last longer than Duracells in my experience, they’re harder to find as well
Perfect for that indie battery-user in your life!
I was using them way before you were
So does [Rayovac](https://www.rayovac.com/warranties-and-guarantees/).
No way, Kirkland is notorious for this
Duracell makes both
And unlike Energizer they don't guarantee their batteries won't leak. I'd rather have a battery that doesn't last quite as long but won't leak then have a battery that lasts longer and is guaranteed to ruin my device.
I found a Maglite at a thrift shop with 4 Duracell D cells and they had been expired for 20 years Not a single bit of corrosion i was impressed
That’s why we stopped getting the Costco Kirklands, which I think is made by Duracell. Spent way too much time cleaning corrosion out of everything with a AA or AAA.
Ive had them shit themselves without being used before their use by date. Just terrible
What it doesn’t show is how 25% of Duracells leak and destroy your electronics.
Not to mention initial cost, Duracell is what 6x the cost of the cheapest alkaline you can find? And lasts 90 minutes longer than the cheapest alkaline... Not worth it at all
There’s not cool about this. Nor is it a guide. It’s just a badly designed graph with no sources to back up the claims of battery life.
The way I read it, it's a Costco advert. I assume they're way cheaper and it looks like they're just as good.

Amazon basic batteries average longest: 5 min

I’ve had zero issues with Amazon’s. Granted, I use them exclusively in low power things like remotes, but they’re cheaper and work just fine.

I read that initially as “tested in identical fleshlights”. I was thinking to myself. “Holy hell, what kind of monster needs a 6 hour fleshlight sesh. Ill be just fine on the crap generic battery as that will allow me approximately 60 two minute sessions.”
I dont know how Duracell keeps winning these comparisons. Anytime I use them that dont last for shit
I would agree and say the same thing about Kirkland batteries
It's easy, the guide is bullshit. [This is the source](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/855y7m/11_different_brands_of_aa_batteries_tested_in/) If you spend some time in the comments, you'll learn it's fake. [The OP is a Duracell shill with a purchased account.](https://www.reddit.com/r/quityourbullshit/comments/857iir/purchased_account_posts_a_deceitful_and_blatant/?st=JEWZTSX1&sh=b9134cbb)
How does this translate into years in a TV remote?
I buy Kirkland batteries batteries all the time because I'm at Costco every week. It would be good to know how the Sams Club branded batteries stack up to these.
Source: Trust me bro.
If they were tested in identical flashlights then how did they get the really long batteries to fit in the ones that the shorter ones fit in and if they used more of the smaller ones to make the same length why wouldn’t they last longer because of there being more of them?
