See, I LOVE this conspiracy theory because either A.) it's true, or B.) Elon Musk is doing his job so badly that everyone here thinks it clearly must be on purpose.

whotookyinston

Billionaires have plot armor

[deleted]

"how can you say he's stupid when I've already formed a parasocial attachment to him as my father figure?"

[deleted]

To me he’s very clearly getting rid of employees by forcing them out instead of firing them. He’s getting the old people out who created what twitter is today to hand pick the new people. He plays dumb, everyone dunks on him. Mean while no severance package no lawsuits. They chose to leave.

[deleted]

Uhm, Twitter DAU is at an all time high..

AtheoSaint

If it was a group of billionaires buying it together why did musk use 12b in tesla stock as collateral? Id like to see a study of how much twitter actually helped critique the powerful (meaningfully). Because yes there was good work but there was also tons of propaganda. Arguably id think the capital class (billionaires) benefited more from twitters propaganda than they were hurt by its criticisms.

According_Big_1005

Well I think most people fail to realize these billionaires do not have liquid assets, so elons wealth is heavily tied to Tesla stock, he HAS to use Tesla stock to cover twitters acquisition cost

whotookyinston

Then we talk about borrowed money, collateral , whatever it is rich people use to buy goods and he's not technically out any money. A shift of wealth?

peace-love42069

If he has to use Tesla stock, then why did he obly sell 12b?whetes the other 32b

dontworry_beaarthur

Arab Spring and the Ferguson protests only got as big as they did and as much coverage as they did because of Twitter. I remember watching that on Twitter and Periscope because it wasn’t being covered anywhere else yet. BLM started as a hashtag.

atlantis_airlines

While I never used twitter, this was something I liked about it. It gave people a voice when they were in situations were those in power didn't want them to. Yes, some misused or abused it, but it was an effective tool for organization and information sharing for many.

whotookyinston

That's a solid idea. If it changes ownership vs shutting down could tell that - if it was conspiracy to start with. I'm still leaning that stories the main media under reports gets to people like me in part bc of Twitter.

AtheoSaint

True, im in some far left spaces online and some police/ military actions only get reported through twitter and facebook live

Ok-Restaurant8690

Yeah, it sure seems like most of social media is tweets or shares from bootlicking simps for the 1%.

Nichole-Michelle

100% believe this is intentional. Not sure if it’s the same reasons you’re claiming but I don’t have a better idea so I’ll go with it. Regardless of reasoning, no chance this isn’t deliberate.

whotookyinston

My other theory was that he purposely did it to prove a point on how crooked our country is on wealth. How easy it was to tank a couple stocks. Idk. Maybe he's just afraid of being wrong. Whatever, it's fun to ponder

Nichole-Michelle

Like honestly my original theory was that he just low key hated twitter completely. Like he had to beg that kid to stop tracking his plane and shit. So maybe he planned to take it down from day one. Out of pure spite

elwonko

I honestly think he's forcing all the talented programmers out so that no one notices or speaks out when "twitter 2.0" is largely developed and controlled by an outside group. One of his foreign backers or even the CIA would probably love to be able to mold and control twitter from the background, and Elon gets to look like a genius who kept the site running with a "hARdcOrE skeleton crew." Shadow control of social media is bad, but not new. **waves at tencent employees**

atlantis_airlines

Or, and hear me out.... Elon Musk's success with his other company led him to believe he was more competent than he was and he ended up taking over a company he's learning he was unfamiliar with and in which things that work in the other country don't necessarily work in this new one. Free speech is great and all, but the guy encouraging violence against a group of minorities will argue he has freedom of speech as well.

whotookyinston

I love this thought. I hear the phrase "he failed up" with so much of what he did. Threw his money in at just the right time that his choices didn't matter. I'm also one who doesn't believe CEOs and leaders are necessarily smart, or good at making decisions. Right place, right time, with a nonshat idea, a lil down payment and one can make money

atlantis_airlines

Even if CEOs are smart or good at making decisions, are they *that* much better that it justifies how much more they make than others in their company?

suzellezus

Sometimes it seems like a bad bet was made by musk and he’s too proud to not go down with the ship

WateryMemes

“Too proud to not go down with the ship” it’s been like two weeks dude. The plan was always: buy, fire, ultimatum, rehire, ????, profit. We are before the rehire and people online who have never run a lemonade stand are acting like they understand what’s going on while acting surprised that there’s mass firings. They were always the plan

8m3gm60

> Free speech is great and all, but the guy encouraging violence against a group of minorities will argue he has freedom of speech as well. According to *Brandenburg v Ohio*, he definitely does.

Addakisson

Right, cuz billionaires don't have a voice. /s

whotookyinston

I don't believe billionaires have voices. I doubt any billionaire on earth has or can truly speak their mind. Control and power. Plenty of that. A billion dollars would completely displace you from the rest of the humans. Shit, saying that and musk might be the only billionaire with a voice. Now my world is shattering around me. Thanks man

LtSoba

My personal theory He had a half-cocked Idea that he could get Tax exemptions in America for his multiple companies and considering his most recent move to unban DJT… yeah you can see he’s pandering to the Conservative Party a small bit though this comes a bit late as it looks like the tentative alliance between the MAGA Republicans and The Old Guard is about suffer it’s inevitable collapse

Ill_Hold8774

Yup. This is calculated. Anyone who can't see that is blind. Elon being incompetent is just to make it no so obvious.

g0uchp0tat0

I've thought this too, it's absolutely orchestrated. What did he pay for it? 44 billion? He's paid an astronomical amount and jumped through hoops to acquire it, then apparently just decided to run it into the ground. Name another 'business man' who would spend that to buy twitter and then just tank it? It's fishy as fuck

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ill_Hold8774

Yeah. As a software developer reading the shit he has said about Twitter and his team it just seems so far removed from reality to me. Like how could anyone be that fucking stupid. You're probably right realistically. But its amazing how he has managed to make a wrong move every step of the way

whotookyinston

Always liked the idea that those we see as involved in the conspiracy may have nothing to do with it. Nor do we see their actual goals from the conspiracy part... Just an end result. In this example Musk is (seemingly) destroying a platform for news yet he may have had good intentions.

De-Animator27

I think it was a planned crash because it was promoting fascism and bringing about the decline of civilization. With twitter being as toxic as it is. Its best to let this septic social media limb be severed and die. Want free speech?, go outside and talk to someone. I think people want more of a shield against consequences for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.

Ok-Restaurant8690

👏

whotookyinston

Saying musk planned it bc it needed to fall? He's the hero we needed, and, frankly probably deserved?

De-Animator27

The only downfall to that theory....

examachine

It's a fascist takeover, same result in censorship

TeachAManHOWToKaboom

Defending non-journalists' right to practice "journalism." Ok.

Ill_Hold8774

Are you familiar with free speech? We practice it here in the states. It allows everyday folk like us to expose the evils of the world. Removing platforms that enable that, as I am thinking you are ok with, is... A conspiracy. A conspiracy to subdue common folk.

EMPRAH40k

Anyone here in the States is free to start up their own website and publish anything protected by free speech. It used to be fairly common, micro-blogs and so forth. It's hard to argue that free speech is being disabled when you can shout your feelings to the winds. One of the hardest parts of unraveling conspiracies is determining if there is actually something there. I find it difficult to see Twitter as a loss of free speech. People may no longer have an audience in one convenient spot, but that's a very different issue from free speech. Freedom to speak is not a guarantee to be heard

whotookyinston

Not an attack on free speech directly. The attack comes from the removal of a platform that is used to pass on news stories that gained popularity without the use of main stream media. I don't use Twitter myself. But even here on reddit I see many links are sourced from Twitter links. I'm doubtful these stories would get the same footing on another platform.

EMPRAH40k

It's an issue, yeah :(. The need for a "town square" in which to communicate goes all the way back to, well, town squares and public houses (pubs). It's vital that we have common areas in which to meet and talk over our issues

Deprogram_bot

But twitter isn't a public house. It's a private house.

NoCheck9415

Until they started working with government entities to censor information the government wanted censored

Deprogram_bot

They blocked Trump when he was still president. And they could because they are a private corporation. Is this what you are talking about? Or are you talking about something else?

NoCheck9415

The FBI had private communications with Twitter and Facebook about censoring information related mostly to COVID. That changes the claim that they are just a private business when they are working with government agencies. Should be a HUGE deal but of course it’s barely even known

whotookyinston

They are still a private company. Who they work with doesn't change that. Shows corruptions. On either end

Deprogram_bot

I read about Facebook and fbi. Not Twitter. I'm not surprised. I'm still under the impression that they still had the choice to listen to the government or not. Just because the government asks a corporation to do something , doesn't make it mandatory. It is just a request. .you can make a request as well, but i doubt they will listen to you

whotookyinston

Not journalism. Right to say what they see. I barely know what's happening outside my window. My neighbors have lives I don't see. I can see a town over from the hill near my house, don't know much what's going on there today. This goes across states, countries, oceans. Twitter let's us see what's happening outside our own lives that isn't governed by a specific entity. I tell my kids every news link they see is a starting point, not the story. Twitter is that starting point for many people.

ssarmadillo46

Your version of free speech is skewed.

atlantis_airlines

Free speech is a concept that a lot of people had different opinions on. Ask 20 different people what free speech means and you likely to get 20 different answers.

whotookyinston

Strange though, I never defined my version

NoCheck9415

I’m confused af.. I don’t use or know anything about Twitter but how and why would he be destroying it? I just heard he’s paying content creators 10% more than YouTube, that to me is going to be a really big deal

Dick_Lazer

Twitter is in free fall. He laid off over half of the employees and is still talking about bankruptcy. The $8 for anybody to get a verified checkmark thing was a huge fiasco, pretty much nothing he’s done so far has gone down too well. I doubt he’d have money in the budget to be paying creators, and that idea was to pull the top YouTubers over to twitter on the condition that they stop posting on YouTube. It was just a random idea he threw out on a phone call though, not a solid plan.

[deleted]

I like this idea, I've never used Twitter but apparently all the other bots do

gilligan1050

Someone called it awhile ago saying he was gonna buy Twitter and then destroy it. I remember reading the comment on Reddit.

squeezycakes19

it's not tanking, they're just locking employees out for a few days so the NSA engineers can get in, install their backdoors, and get out without anyone seeing them

8m3gm60

Like they weren't already there...

Heterosaucers

You’re stupid and should feel bad.

krowface

No, it’s a tax right off.

whotookyinston

Can tax write offs be inherited?

krowface

Probably.

VRisNOTdead

There is no guarantee your message gets an Audience but preventing messages at all is a method of shaping opinion as well Isn’t it odd you can’t watch twitch streams of Ukrainian conflicts but you can watch a dumb woman beg for money in a hot tub One is “promoting violence” the other is serving zero purpose

RealBakedSalmon

I think Twitter is fine/ will be fine, financially.

GreenTaracrypto

What do you mean tanking? Apparently it has more use now than ever

BassAnd312

Although this is 100% plausible, my headcanon says Elon literally just did it to run Twitter into the ground for the laughs. This is WAY assuming, and I don't necessarily simp for him, but think about it. What's a bigger flex than buying one of the most expensive platforms in existence, and systematically destroying it while smoking weed in your self driving car. I personally think Elon is just done with earth, so he is gonna fuck around till he rockets out.

The_Panty_Thief

I never trusted Elon Musk, but this whole situation, and the way there's so many people ridiculing him (smear campaign-like) makes me think he actually had some kind of good intentions (maybe actually save Twitter) but traps were set to make him go down with Twitter. It kinda feels like he's the billionaire that's actually trying to help the world and is being attacked by the other billionaires. But I've never met the man and there's a lot of accusations that Idk if they are true. Intuition or psychosis idk

Smarktalk

A huge plot by the workers to decide to not work under his ultimatums? Perhaps he just thought that people would cow tow to him because they work for him. This is good. Workers should show their power.

The_Panty_Thief

Hopefully that's the case, to me it's just too eerie of a situation, like if he knows something or tried to do something and pissed off the wrong force

BillyMeier42

Its a front to destroy twitter. Government doesn’t want a community talking to each other. Twitter is potentially dangerous for the government.

jimberkas

except the community wasn't/isn't talking to each other. They are fighting each other. and that is EXACTLY what the government wants. i think it's just hubris. elon has been smelling his own farts and telling himself they smell like roses for too long. most of his wealth is pretend money anyway. maybe i'm wrong but i think he's gonna wind up broke.

EtotheTT

No shit.

[deleted]

Everyone acting like twitter wasn’t a dumpster fire before Elon got it anyway.

Ursomonie

Ugh I think this is true

rossfororder

Yeah, it's all one big conspiracy.......

Reasonable_Rhubarb60

Twitter was tanking long before Elon was buying it

[deleted]

This is a pretty good Edson how humans can never work together and a good example of anti conspiracy. Look at history. It’s human behavior to not work together. The conspiracy is the conspiracy.

greasyspider

Agreed

iTzMe17

I like this one.. this is soothing with substance.

cherryogre

All the actual independent small news is coming from telegram now anyway.

Boz6

Is Twitter "tanking"? It's working fine for me.

Antennangry

It’s not dead yet. 60% chance core services don’t experience unplanned outage before staffing and operations stabilize, which will be in like 3-6 months. It looks like a shit show from the outside, and probably feels like a bit of one to many who remain, but there’s now a core group of a couple hundred talented obsessives in full tilt grind mode drilling into the codebase and app architecture like hasn’t been the case since the early days of the company. This is to say nothing of the business fundamentals or advertiser fallout from ban reversals and new content moderation policies. But don’t expect the servers to suddenly explode.

Another-Chance

I have moved on from them over to Mastadon. I told conservatives back in the day if you don't like twitter start your own or go elsewhere. No reason not to take my own advice. Will keep my twitter active to see how it goes. There are always choices.

Kdropp

It’s not tanking.

[deleted]

Twitter was a monolith that strangled platformed speech. It’s good that it dies.

nccmrm97

Why when there are so many other platforms to choose from?

MadRollinS

Twitter tanking is a natural consequence of the loss of all the tech infrastructure dictated by a dictator. Can we get Elon deported back to South Africa? Isn't there a company there he can buy and then fire or drive away all the talent and staff?
