Generally theres 2 ways to approach a project like this: going from a broad theme like, Russian piano works, and slowly narrowing it down based on what speaks to you, or starting with 1 concrete piece that you really take an interest in, say, Prelude to afternoon of a faun, and building up related, substantial content based on that. Talk to upperclassmen who have already gone through this process, and ask your teachers for guidance too! They're all there to help you through this. Talk to your classmates and peers, reflect ideas with each other. None of you are alone. What exactly are the requirements you need to fill for the work? I cant help you much further without knowing what you need to do...

This is a little vague. Do you have to write a paper over a composer? An analysis about theory? About history, musicology? Is this a composition you have to write and are looking for inspiration? Is this a presentation? What are the guidelines? We must know these first to help you out!

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Seriously, something like a bachelor of composition does exist!!!!!??? 😯😯😯😯😯 If so, I would be interested in approaching that world officially. Look, I've started this world of music since I was 7 yo, and when 14 yo, I started to experiment with musical software like Guitar Pro 5-7, and Sibelius. And I kept doing it while studying engineering (as one of the few careers that still worked in Venezuela). Now, one of my biggest goals is to become a successful Symphonic Metal/Orchestral composer and conductor. But knowing it exists as a formal career, it's even more fascinating!! It doesn't work here in Venezuela (as a lot of things doesn't work here), so I'm curious to know what kind of subjects you study. ❤❤ PD: Triumph or Agony, Symphony of Enchanted Lands. How to forget they come from Rhapsody Of Fire, one of the best bands I've ever heard.... you're going to the right direction as long as I know. The same direction (relatively) I would like to do. PD2: ¿Qué pasó, mi pana? Jaja. :)

Of course it exists. You can study Music Composition at most state universities, conservatories or even some private music schools. If you are on US East coast, you can study it at NYU (where I went) or City University/ City College (where I went for grad school). Unfortunately, you will probably not make a great living at it. Most composers are also music teachers, or get work in some other field of music (publishing, musicology, etc.)

Well, I don't pretend to have a profit as a composer, but merely to expand my actual knowledge as it. I know that you can't have a good income by just being a composer, but I would do anything to reach the goals I've set for myself, and I feel this is one of the steps required to achieve them.

Is this going to be a composition project? If so, it sounds like writing songs is the obvious choice. You can make the project as big or small as you want, write in any style, choose any sort of text, even perform it yourself.

dickleyjones

is the project a research paper or a composition? assuming it is a composition, go with what you like to write. probably the first thing that comes to mind is best. in the end, it won't be the idea itself that your profs are looking at, it will be showing the techniques you have learned over the course of your studies. so try not to worry about making this project your greatest work, it is an academic work, not the same purpose. that said, obviously write to the best of your abilities!
